Abstract:In this paper, terminal sliding mode attitude tracking control without unwinding for rigid spacecraft is investigated. In order to guarantee the finite-time convergence of the system states and unwinding-free performance of the system on the sliding surface, a novel switching function is constructed by a hyperbolic sine function such that the obtained terminal sliding surface contains two equilibria. Then, a terminal attitude tracking control law is developed to ensure that the system states are driven to the sliding surface in a finite time. Moreover, a boundary layer is introduced to solve the chattering problem of the designed controller. The convergence of the system states within the boundary layer is guaranteed by imposing a constraint for the parameter of the developed switching function. Furthermore, the subsets of attraction domains of the two equilibria are given by designing a dynamic parameter for the proposed control law. The simulation results illustrate that the attitude tracking of rigid spacecraft without unwinding is realized by adopting the proposed attitude control law.

Abstract:In this article, a novel control approach with a dynamic parameter and an attitude maneuver planning scheme is proposed for flexible spacecraft to achieve anti-unwinding attitude maneuver control and vibration suppression. In order to suppress the flexible modal vibration of the flexible spacecraft during the attitude maneuver, an attitude maneuver path is planned by the proposed attitude maneuver planning scheme with four input impulses satisfying some conditions. For tracking the planned reference attitude maneuver path without unwinding phenomenon, a robust attitude maneuver controller with a dynamic parameter is proposed based on a novel switching function which contains terminal and non-terminal sliding manifolds. Besides, the obtained sliding surface contains two equilibria. Finite-time convergence and unwinding-free performance of the closed-loop system are analyzed by Lyapunov theory. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed attitude control scheme possesses robustness and anti-unwinding performance. Besides, the flexible vibration can be suppressed by tracking the planned attitude maneuver path.

Abstract:This paper investigates two robust finite-time controllers for the attitude control of spacecraft based on rotation matrix. The first controller can compensate external disturbances with known bounds, whereas the second one can deal with both external disturbances and input saturation by using the hyperbolic tangent function and auxiliary system. Both controllers can avoid the singularity and converge to zero in finite time by using novel fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode control. Because the controllers are designed based on a rotation matrix that represents the set of attitudes both globally and uniquely, the system can overcome the drawbacks of unwinding. Abstract:In this paper, the attitude maneuver control without unwinding for rigid spacecraft is addressed based on the modified Rodrigues parameters (MRPs). First of all, an attitude control system model for rigid spacecraft is constructed by designing a selection logic for the MRP set and its shadow set. To guarantee the asymptotic stability in the large and unwinding-free performance of the closed-loop system on the sliding phase, a sliding function is presented. Then, a sliding mode control law is developed to ensure that the system states are driven to the sliding surface. Moreover, a dynamic parameter is designed in the proposed control scheme, such that the unwinding phenomenon is avoided when the system states are outside the sliding surface. Further, a boundary layer is introduced for the constructed controller to avoid the chattering phenomenon. It is also proven that the convergence property and anti-unwinding performance are ensured when the system states are within the boundary layer. Abstract:In this article, anti-unwinding attitude maneuver control for rigid spacecraft is considered. First, in order to avoid the unwinding phenomenon when the system states are restricted to the switching surface, a novel switching function is designed by a hyperbolic sine function such that the switching surface contains the two equilibriums. Then, a sliding mode attitude maneuver controller is developed based on the proposed switching function to ensure the robustness of the closed-loop system to disturbance and inertia uncertainty. Another important feature of the presented attitude control law is that a dynamic parameter is constructed to guarantee the unwinding-free performance before the system states reach the switching surface. Furthermore, a boundary layer is introduced for the designed controller to avoid the chattering phenomenon. Moreover, the convergence property and unwinding-free performance when the system states within the boundary layer are proven. The simulation results demonstrate that the unwinding problem is settled during attitude maneuver for rigid spacecraft by adopting the newly developed switching function and the presented attitude control scheme.

Abstract:The attitude maneuver control of spacecraft under bounded disturbance and input saturation is investigated in this paper. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, an anti-saturation sliding mode control algorithm is given by designing a time-varying sliding mode to solve the input saturated attitude control problem without disturbance. Then combining the merit in anti-saturation of time-varying sliding mode controller with the merit in anti-disturbance of time-invariant sliding mode controller, a switching strategy between the two controllers is designed to solve the attitude maneuver control problem under input saturation and bounded disturbance. However, double value of quaternions makes the attitude slewing unwinding. To solve the problem, an attitude error vector is designed. Based on the error vector, a modified sliding mode control algorithm is proposed which simultaneously has the ability of anti-saturation, anti-disturbance and anti-unwinding. Simulation results show that the algorithm in this paper is feasible and effective.

Abstract:In this paper, a continuous finite-time tracking control algorithm for spacecraft in the presence of external disturbances is presented. The control law is based on a recently developed multivariable super-twisting sliding mode ( MSTSM) approach. A strong Lyapunov function is used to guarantee the finite-time closed-loop stability. One of the main features of the proposed controller is that it is continuous and chattering free. Numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the performance of the developed control scheme.

Abstract:Two finite-time controllers without unwinding for the attitude tracking control of the spacecraft are investigated based on the rotation matrix, in which a novel modified nonsingular fast terminal sliding manifold is developed to keep tr(R~)≠-1. The first terminal sliding mode controller can compensate external disturbances with known bounds, while the second one can compensate external disturbances with unknown bounds by using an adaptive control method. Since the first terminal sliding mode controller is continuous, it is able to avoid chattering phenomenon. Theoretical analysis shows that both the two controllers can make spacecraft follow a time-varying reference attitude signal in finite time. Numerical simulations also demonstrate that the proposed control schemes are effective.

Abstract:The problem of spacecraft attitude regulation based on the reaction of arm motion has attracted extensive attentions from both engineering and academic fields. Most of the solutions of the manipulator’s motion tracking problem just achieve asymptotical stabilization performance, so that these controllers cannot realize precise attitude regulation because of the existence of non-holonomic constraints. Thus, sliding mode control algorithms are adopted to stabilize the tracking error with zero transient process. Due to the switching effects of the variable structure controller, once the tracking error reaches the designed hyper-plane, it will be restricted to this plane permanently even with the existence of external disturbances. Thus, precise attitude regulation can be achieved. Furthermore, taking the non-zero initial tracking errors and chattering phenomenon into consideration, saturation functions are used to replace sign functions to smooth the control torques. The relations between the upper bounds of tracking errors and the controller parameters are derived to reveal physical characteristic of the controller. Mathematical models of free-floating space manipulator are established and simulations are conducted in the end. The results show that the spacecraft’s attitude can be regulated to the position as desired by using the proposed algorithm, the steady state error is 0.000 2 rad. In addition, the joint tracking trajectory is smooth, the joint tracking errors converges to zero quickly with a satisfactory continuous joint control input. The proposed research provides a feasible solution for spacecraft attitude regulation by using arm motion, and improves the precision of the spacecraft attitude regulation.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (ANTSMC) is investigated for attitude tracking of spacecraft with actuator faults. First, a nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode surface is designed to avoid the singularity. Finite-time attitude control is developed using the nonsingular terminal sliding mode technique, which can make the attitude and angular velocity tracking errors converge to zero in finite time in the presence of uncertainties and external disturbances. Second, the total uncertainty is deduced to be bounded. The adaptive laws are incorporated to develop the ANTSMC, removing the restriction on the upper bound of the lumped uncertainty. The finite-time convergence of the closed-loop system with ANTSMC is proved using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controllers.

Abstract:This article investigates the attitude tracking control problem for a class of flexible spacecraft with a redundant four reaction wheels' setting. In this study, inertia uncertainties, external disturbance, wheel torque saturation, and configuration misalignment are taken into account simultaneously. Two types of sliding mode controllers are presented to solve this design problem. First, supposing the norm upper bound of external disturbances, bounds of inertia, and input uncertainties are available, a terminal sliding mode attitude tracking control strategy is developed, where the controller and steering laws are synthesized together. Second, supposing these norm upper bounds are unavailable, an adaptive control law is designed to cope with attitude tracking problem. Under both control schemes, the system trajectory can be ensured to arrive on the specified sliding surface in finite time. Finally, an illustrative example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed attitude tracking control methodologies.

Abstract:To solve the problem of position and attitude control of a spacecraft in the presence of parametric uncertainties and external disturbances,an adaptive sliding mode control approach is presented.The proposed approach is employed to control the position and attitude of the spacecraft in order to capture and remove large space targets by performing position and large angle maneuvers.The proposed control algorithm eliminates the requirement of uncertainty bound and is easier to implement than the traditional sliding mode control approach.The proposed controller ensures the asymptotic position and attitude tracking through Lyapunov analysis.Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Abstract:Purpose - This paper aims to investigate the problem of finite-time consensus tracking control without unwinding for formation flying spacecraft in the presence of external disturbances. Design/methodology/approach - Two distributed finite-time controllers are developed using the backstepping sliding mode. The first robust controller can compensate for external disturbances with known bounds, and the second one can compensate for external disturbances with unknown bounds. Findings - Because the controllers are designed on the basis of rotation matrix, which represents the set of attitudes both globally and uniquely, the system can overcome the drawback of unwinding, which results in extra fuel consumption. Through introducing a novel virtual angular velocity, exchange of control signals between neighboring spacecraft becomes unnecessary, and it is able to reduce the communication burden. Practical implications - The two robust controllers can deal with unwinding that may result in fuel consumption by traveling a long distance before returning to a desired attitude when the closed-loop system is close to the desired attitude equilibrium. Originality/value - Two finite-time controllers without unwinding are proposed for formation flying spacecraft by using backstepping sliding mode. Furthermore, exchange of control signals between neighboring spacecraft is unnecessary.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the potential actuator failures of spacecraft in practical engineering applications. Aiming at the shortcomings and deficiencies in the existing attitude fault-tolerant control system design, combined with the current research status of attitude fault-tolerant control technology, we carry out high-precision, fast-convergent attitude tracking algorithms. Based on the adaptive nonsingular terminal sliding mode control theory, we design a kind of fixed-time convergence control method. This method solves the problems of actuator faults, actuator saturation, external disturbances, and inertia uncertainties. The control method includes control law design and controller design. The designed fixed-time adaptive nonsingular terminal sliding mode control law is applicable to the development of fixed-time fault-tolerant attitude tracking controller with multiple constraints. The designed controller considers the saturation of the actuator output torque so that the spacecraft can operate within the saturation magnitude without on-line fault estimation. Lyapunov stability analysis shows that under multiple constraints such as actuator saturation, external disturbances, and inertia uncertainties, the controller has fast convergence and has good fault tolerance to actuator fault. The numerical simulation shows that the controller has good performance and low-energy consumption in attitude tracking control.

Abstract:In this paper an adaptive sliding mode controller is proposed for attitude tracking of flexible spacecraft, in which adaptive mechanism is adopted to estimate disturbances with unknown upper bounds and inertia parameters. A nonlinear observer is designed to estimate vibration modes of flexible appendages so that the vibration can be actively suppressed. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved by Lyapunov technique. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can achieve attitude tracking control and effectively suppress induced vibrations of flexible appendages.

Abstract:This paper proposes a robust control algorithm for stabilization of a three-axis flexible spacecraft in the presence of model uncertainty, external disturbances and control input nonlinearities. This control algorithm is based on variable structure output feedback control design technique that explicitly accounts for the control input nonlinearities in the stability analysis. Asymptotically and exponentially stable design methods are investigated for constructing the controller to stabilized uncertain system with input nonlinearities. Two kinds of the controller are presented that both ensures the global reaching condition of the sliding mode of the spacecraft dynamics system. Moreover, in the sliding mode, the dynamics system under study still bears the insensitivity to the uncertainties and disturbances as the system with linear input. An additional attractive feature of the control method is that the structure of controller is independent of the elastic mode dynamics of the spacecraft, since in practice the measurement of flexible modes is not easy or feasible. It is also shown that an adaptive version of the proposed controller is achieved through removing requirements of knowing the bounds of the uncertainties and perturbations in advance. Furthermore, a modified adaptation control law is given to improve the adaptive performances such that a new controller is designed which can guarantee the boundedness of the closed-loop system. Numerical simulations show that the precise attitude and vibration suppression can be accomplished using the derived controller for both cases with and without adaptive control.

Abstract:This paper investigates two finite-time controllers for the attitude tracking control of the spacecraft based on the quaternion by terminal sliding mode control. Because quaternion is unable to represent the set of attitudes both globally and uniquely, it can result in unwinding. Unwinding makes a spacecraft perform an unnecessary large-angle maneuver when a small-angle maneuver in the opposite rotational direction is sufficient to achieve the objective. The first controller converges to the equilibrium without singularity in finite time, while the second one converges to the region near the equilibrium without singularity, chattering and unwinding in finite time. Saturation function is introduced to the first controller to eliminate singularity, while a novel fast terminal sliding mode control is introduced to the second controller to eliminate singularity and unwinding. Theoretical analysis shows that the controllers can make the spacecraft follow a time-varying reference attitude signal in finite time and guarantee the stability of the overall closed-loop system. Numerical simulations also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.
Spacecraft Attitude Maneuver Using Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control Based on Variable Exponential Reaching Law

Abstract:As a typical multi-input and multi-output nonlinear system, spacecraft faces the challenges of rapid maneuvering at a large angle and can control rapidly as well as stably. However, there are several problems in the sliding mode control method commonly used in the aerospace field, such as slow convergence, singularity, and chattering. Taking the consideration of aforementioned conditions, this paper proposes a non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control based on variable exponential reaching law (NFTSMC-VERL). Firstly, using a continuous hyperbolic tangent function instead of symbolic function, variable exponential reaching law is designed to solve the problem of chattering in exponential reaching law. The reachability and finite time convergence of this method are proved by theory. Secondly, a non-singular fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) surface based on satellite attitude dynamics is designed as a sliding mode function. Thirdly, the controller is designed by combining the VERL with the NFTSM function. Finally, not only has the simulation results showed the good tracking performance of the spacecraft attitude control system, but also the chattering and singularity phenomenon of the traditional sliding mode controller is avoided by the designed controller. Besides, the robustness of designed controller is improved, compared with the traditional sliding mode controller.
