Abstract:The prevailing view of the formation of porphyry copper deposits along convergent plate boundaries involves deep crustal differentiation of metal-bearing juvenile magmas derived from the mantle wedge above a subduction zone. However, many major porphyry districts formed during periods of flat-slab subduction when the mantle wedge would have been reduced or absent, leaving the source of the ore-forming magmas unclear. Here we use geochronology and thermobarometry to investigate deep crustal processes during the genesis of the Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene Laramide Porphyry Province in Arizona, which formed during flat-slab subduction of the Farallon Plate beneath North America. We show that the isotopic signatures of Laramide granitic rocks are consistent with a Proterozoic crustal source that was potentially pre-enriched in copper. This source underwent water-fluxed melting between 73 and 60 Ma, coincident with the peak of granitic magmatism (78–50 Ma), porphyry genesis (73–56 Ma) and flat-slab subduction (70–40 Ma). To explain the formation of the Laramide Porphyry Province, we propose that volatiles derived from the leading edge of the Farallon flat slab promoted melting of both mafic and felsic pre-enriched lower crust, without requiring extensive magmatic or metallogenic input from the mantle wedge. Other convergent plate boundaries with flat-slab regimes may undergo a similar mechanism of volatile-mediated lower-crustal melting.

Tectonic and Crustal Processes Drive Multi-Million Year Arc Magma Evolution Leading up to Porphyry Copper Deposit Formation in Central Chile

Abstract:Abstract Subduction zone magmatism is a major control of volcanism, the generation of modern continental crust and the formation of economically important porphyry Cu–(Mo–Au) deposits. Reading the magmatic record of individual arc segments and constraining the rates of magmatic changes are critical in order to fully understand and quantify the processes that drive magma evolution in subduction settings during arc growth. This study focuses on the San Francisco Batholith and the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry deposit cluster in central Chile, which provides an igneous rock record over ~13.5 Myr of arc evolution. We use whole-rock geochemistry, zircon geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry to track changes in the crustal magmatic system of this arc segment during crustal thickening and porphyry Cu deposit formation. By combining the analytical dataset with Monte Carlo fractional crystallisation and assimilation fractional crystallisation modelling, we test a model for significant crustal involvement during magma evolution. Systematic and continuous increases in Dy/Yb, La/Yb, V/Sc and Sr/Y in the magmas over time indicate a transition in the main fractionation assemblage from plagioclase-dominated to amphibole-dominated that reflects deeper crystallisation and/or a higher meltwater content. Concomitant decreases in εHf and Th/La as well as increasing Ba/Th are best explained by assimilation of progressively deeper crustal lithologies from low (Chilenia) to high Ba/Th (Cuyania) basement terranes. Our study highlights that an increasingly hydrous magma and a deepening locus of crustal magma differentiation and assimilation, driven by crustal thickening contemporaneous with increased tectonic convergence and ingression of the aseismic Juan Fernandez ridge, can account for all investigated aspects of the multi-Myr magmatic evolution leading up to the formation of the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry Cu deposits. Our findings corroborate the importance of high-pressure differentiation of hydrous magma for the formation of Andean-style porphyry deposits. Once magmas favourable for porphyry Cu mineralisation were generated in the lower crust, multiple episodes of efficient magma migration into the upper crust fed several, discrete, shallow magmatic-hydrothermal systems over ~3.5 Myr to form the world’s largest known Cu resource at Rio Blanco-Los Bronces.

A Model for the Lithospheric Architecture of the Central Andes and the Localization of Giant Porphyry Copper Deposit Clusters

Abstract:Abstract In the central Andes, giant porphyry copper deposits of similar ages group into discrete geographic clusters that are regularly spaced and aligned within orogen-parallel belts. This clustering highlights how exceptional geologic processes affected localized regions of the lithosphere during mineralization and that the spatial and temporal distribution of giant porphyry deposits is nonrandom. Development of favorable regions of lithosphere for significant metal concentration are linked to the overlap of structural pathways that focus fluid and magma flow from the mantle to upper crust during high-horizontal-compressive-strain events. These structural pathways are notoriously difficult to identify in the field due to their often-subtle surficial manifestations and continental scale. Field mapping at multiple scales in northwest Argentina and southern Peru, as well as regional structural traverses throughout the central Andes, indicates the presence of regional-scale structural corridors 5 to 25 km wide and hundreds of km long that consist of myriad fault planes. The variable width and diffuse surface expression of these corridors is interpreted to reflect the upward propagation of underlying zones of basement weakness through younger supracrustal sequences in the overriding plate. Such structural corridors are (1) apparent at multiple scales of investigation, (2) long-lived, (3) preferentially reactivated though time, and (4) evident in geophysical data sets. This structural architecture formed in response to the interplay of pre-Cenozoic tectonics and the orientation of inherited structural weaknesses. These fault systems persist in the upper crust as steep zones of enhanced permeability that can preferentially reactivate as pathways for ascending hydrous magmas and fluids during major deformation events. Linear orogen-parallel structural belts cogenetic with the magmatic arc provide the first-order control to giant porphyry copper deposit distribution. The second-order control is the intersection of orogen-oblique structural corridors with the orogen-parallel belts, localizing deposit clusters at these intersections. Such regions are inferred to have been zones of deep permeability, with vertical translithospheric pathways activated during high-strain tectonic events that affected the intra-arc stress field.

Abstract:Porphyry Cu deposits in the Chilean and Argentinian central Andes occur in a series of orogen-parallel magmatic arcs, which migrated episodically eastward since the Early Cretaceous. The three Cenozoic belts, corresponding to Paleocene-early Eocene, middle Eocene-early Oligocene, and Miocene-early Pliocene epochs, cut obliquely across a composite belt of subeconomic porphyry Cu mineralization formed at several times during the Late Carboniferous to Triassic interval. Based mainly on U-Pb zircon and Re-Os molybdenite ages, 10 Cenozoic porphyry Cu centers, including major deposits in all three of the Cenozoic belts, occupy the same sites as late Paleozoic-Triassic porphyry Cu mineralization where their respective magmatic arcs cross one another. The sites of recurrent porphyry Cu mineralization are believed to be underlain by long-lived dike conduits that were utilized at least twice—first in the late Paleozoic-Triassic and then again in the Cenozoic—to rapidly transmit hydrous magma from deep to shallow levels of the crust. Contenders for preferential dike localization include arc-oblique fault and subjacent ductile shear zones—transcrustal discontinuities—long hypothesized to be present in the region, particularly where they intersect magmatic arcs and associated porphyry Cu belts. Regardless of the controls on porphyry Cu recurrence, alteration zones hosted by late Paleozoic-Triassic volcanic and plutonic rocks in the central Andes of Chile and Argentina must be considered prime exploration targets for potentially large, high-grade Cenozoic porphyry Cu deposits.

Abstract:Much of the world's economic copper resources are hosted in porphyry copper deposits (PCDs), shallow level magmatic intrusions associated mostly with thick (>45km) magmatic arcs, such as mature island arcs and continental arcs. However, a well-known, but unresolved paradox, is that arc magmas traversing thick crust, particularly in continental arcs, are generally depleted in Cu whereas in island arcs, where PCDs are less common, magmas become enriched in Cu. Here, we show that the formation of PCDs requires a complex sequence of intra-crustal magmatic processes, from the lower crust to the upper crust. PCDs form when the crust becomes thick (>45km) enough to crystallize garnet. Garnet fractionation depletes Fe from the magma, which drives sulfide segregation and removal of most of the magma's Cu into the lower crust, leaving only small amounts of Cu in the residual magma to make PCDs. However, because garnet is depleted in ferric iron, the remaining Fe in the magma becomes progressively oxidized, which eventually oxidizes sulfide to sulfate, thereby releasing sulfide bound Cu from the magma into solution. This auto-oxidation of the magma, made possible by deep-seated garnet fractionation, increases the ability of endogenic magmatic fluids to self-scavenge Cu from large volumes of otherwise Cu-poor magmas and then transport and concentrate Cu to the tops of magmatic bodies. Examination of the occurrence of PCDs in the central Andes shows that ore formation occurs when continental arcs reach their maximum thickness (>60km), just before the termination of magmatism.

Abstract:Porphyry copper deposits (PCDs) occur in accretionary and collisional orogens, yet it is unclear how continental collision controls their formation. Two fundamental issues are debated: Which mechanism triggers melting of collision-thickened lithosphere, and which sources supply metals and volatiles necessary for formation of collision-related PCDs? Here, we image the lithospheric architecture of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen that hosts abundant Miocene giant to large PCDs in Tibet, using joint inversion of surface wave and satellite gravity data, integrated with magnetotelluric (MT) array data and geochemical data. Our results show that the subducted Indian continental lithosphere was torn into several pieces with different subduction angles during the Cenozoic Indo-Asia collision. The tears in the Indian slab provides channels for asthenospheric upwelling, which reworks the overlying Asian lithosphere and triggers melting. This process generates ultrapotassic mafic melts that ascend and pond at the base of the crust, leading to high heat flow and supply of released H 2 O for water-fluxed melting of the overlying thick crust and generation of hydrous granitoid magmas. Sulfide break-down in a juvenile Cu-rich lower-crustal source during melting increases the fertility of the granitoid magmas. Our study indicates that three key factors generate the collision-related PCDs: A torn slab subducted at moderate angle, prior fertilization of the lower crust with Cu, and trans-lithospheric vertical structures for magma ascent. Block margins in collisional orogens built above fossil oceanic subduction zones are optimal locations for the formation of giant PCDs. Therefore, regional-scale Nd-Hf-O isotopic mapping integrated with multiple geophysical inversions are key to mineral exploration for PCDs in collision systems.

Abstract:An essential part of the world's remaining mineral resources is expected to reside deep in the crust or under post-mineralization cover. For porphyry copper deposits, the world's primary source of Cu, Mo, and Re, identifying the dynamic processes that control their emplacement in the upper crust can guide future exploration. Seismic tomography can constrain these processes through imaging deep-seated structures at the regional scale. Here we construct a three-dimensional model of the Vp/Vs ratio, based on arrival times of P and S seismic waves, beneath the Cerro Colorado porphyry Cu-(Mo) deposit in northern Chile. Our images show that low Vp/Vs (~ 1.55-1.65) anomalies, extending to ~ 5-15 km depth, coincide with the surface expression of known porphyry copper deposits and prospects, as well as delimit structures that host orebodies and related hydrothermal alteration zones. Medium Vp/Vs (~ 1.68-1.74) and high Vp/Vs (Vp/Vs ~ 1.85) bodies correspond to intermediate-felsic plutonic precursors for porphyry intrusions and mafic magma reservoirs that underlie shallower orebodies, respectively. Imaging these precursor and parental plutons is crucial to the identification of orebodies as they act as the source of fluids for porphyry copper generation. This study demonstrates the potential of local earthquake tomography as a tool to identify future deep mineral resources with minimal environmental impact.
Formation of the Adakite-Like Granitoid Complex and Porphyry Copper-Gold Deposit in Shaxi from Southern Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Belt: A Clue to the West Pacific Plate Subduction

Abstract:On the basis of the geological and geochemical studies, including chemical analysis of bulk rocks, rare-earth and trace element studies, fluid inclusion, and S and O isotopic analyses, the authors described the geological background of the deposit in detail and presented significant proofs for the conditions of formation of the Shaxi porphyry copper-gold deposit. Compared with other large and supper-large porphyry copper deposits in China and the adjacent Cu-Au mineralized areas, the ore-forming processes and conditions were analyzed; and the possibility of forming large porphyry copper deposits in the Shaxi area was discussed. The present study indicated that the ore-forming fluid and material were mainly of magmatic origin, while meteoric water played a certain role in the ore-forming processes. Interactions between subducting and overriding plates provided a major driving force for the formation of igneous rocks and the deposition of metal elements in East China since Jurassic. Based on the geochemical data of the Shaxi intrusive, it is found that the copper (gold) mineralization is closely related to the genesis of adakite-like intrusive in the Shaxi area. This adakite-like intrusive was formed in the subduction environment as a result of the subduction of the West Pacific plate toward the East China continent, where there is a great potentiality to form a large porphyry copper deposit.

Abstract:Many large porphyry Cu-Au deposits are connected to adakitic rocks known to be closely associated with ridge subduction. For example, there are several subducting ridges along the east Pacific margin, e.g., in Chile, Peru, and South America, most of which are associated with large porphyry Cu-Au deposits. In contrast, there are much fewer ridge subductions on the west Pacific margin and porphyry Cu-Au deposits are much less there, both in terms of tonnage and the number of deposits. Given that Cu and Au are moderately incompatible elements, oceanic crust has much higher Cu-Au concentrations than the mantle and the continental crust, and thus slab melts with their diagnostic adakitic chemistry have systematically higher Cu and Au, which is favorable for mineralization. Considering the geotherm of subducting slabs in the Phanerozoic, ridge subduction is the most favorable tectonic setting for this. Therefore, slab melting is the likely link in the spatial association between ridge subduction and Cu-Au deposits. Geochemical signatures of slab melting and hence maybe ridge subduction in less eroded regions in eastern China, the central Asian orogenic belt etc. may indicate important exploration targets for large porphyry Cu-Au deposits.
An abrupt switch in magmatic plumbing taps porphyry copper deposit-forming magmas

Abstract:Abstract Porphyry-type deposits are a vital source of green technology metals such as copper and molybdenum. They typically form in subduction-related settings from large, long-lived magmatic systems. The most widely accepted model for their formation requires that mantle-derived magmas undergo a multi-million year timescale ramp-up in volatiles and ore-forming constituents in mid- to lower-crustal reservoirs, however this does not explain why porphyry deposits are absent from the vast majority of arc magmatic systems. To address this, we have carried out geochemical and geochronological studies on the tilted, ~8 km depth equivalent, cross-section through the classic Yerington magmatic system, Nevada. Here we show that the magmas underwent a major and abrupt change in chemistry over a period of 100 kyrs which is coincident with the initiation of ore formation. This is attributed to a wholesale switch in the magmatic plumbing system whereby volatile-rich granitic melts were extracted from an estimated ~30 km depth and transported to shallow levels (~3-8 km) where exsolving fluids were focussed through highly permeable pathways to form porphyry deposits. The change in magma chemistry is documented across the entire plutonic to volcanic record. Its rapidity suggests that the increase in a magma’s ore-forming potential is not solely driven by tectonic factors, that occur over multi-million year scales, but through internal processes within the melt evolution zone, operating at more than an order of magnitude faster than previously envisaged. This short timescale narrows the temporal-geochemical footprint of magmas associated with porphyry mineralisation which will aid in targeting the next generation of ore deposits.
Stochastic modelling of deep magmatic controls on porphyry copper deposit endowment

Abstract:Porphyry deposits, our main source of copper and of significant amounts of Mo, Re and Au, form at convergent margins in association with intermediate-felsic magmas. Although it is accepted that copper is transported and precipitated by fluids released by these magmas, the magmatic processes leading to the formation of economic deposits remain elusive. Here we perform Monte Carlo petrological and geochemical modelling to quantitatively link crustal magmatic processes and the geochemical signatures of magmas (i.e., Sr/Y) to the formation of porphyry Cu deposits of different sizes. Our analysis shows that economic deposits (particularly the largest ones) may only form in association with magma accumulated in the lower-middle crust (P > ~0.5 GPa) during ≥2–3 Ma, and subsequently transferred to and degassed in the upper crust over periods of up to ~2.0 Ma. Magma accumulation and evolution at shallower depths (<~0.4 GPa) dramatically reduces the potential of magmatic systems to produce economic deposits. Our modelling also predicts the association of the largest porphyry deposits with a specific Sr/Y interval (~100 ± 50) of the associated magmatic rocks, which is virtually identical to the range measured in giant porphyry copper deposits.

Mesozoic Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle Extension and Related Porphyry Copper Mineralization in South China

Abstract:Most of the large porphyry copper deposits occurred in arc setting, which are closely related to oceanic crust subduction, especially to partial melting of mantle materials caused by dehydration of subducted plates. Recent studies have shown that porphyry copper deposits can occur in non-subduction setting, such as intra-continental and continental collision setting. The formation of porphyry copper deposits in continental collision setting is related to the partial melting of lithosphere modified by subduction. The fertilized magma emplaced in the shallow part of the crust through the crystallization differentiation and crustal contamination. However, the spatial and temporal distribution of porphyry copper deposits in the intra-continents setting are incompatible with the structures of the contemporary subduction zones, its genesis mechanism and dynamic process are not very clear. It has been a long intra-continental tectonic setting since the Paleozoic in South China. Three episodes porphyry copper systems (Early Jurassic, Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous) occurred in Mesozoic, which related to the intra-continental tectonic setting. The Late Jurassic porphyry copper system was concurrent with the large-scale W-Sn mineralization in South China. The spatial and temporal distributions of these porphyry deposits are obviously inconsistent with those of the subduction-related porphyry copper system in southwestern USA and Cordilleran orogenic belt. The characteristics of sub-continental lithospheric mantle extension-related porphyry copper deposits is quite different from those occurred as linear formed in subduction, post-subduction extension, and continental collision setting. Especially, the porphyry copper deposits in the Early Cretaceous porphyry copper deposits which distributed as planar, which basically consistent with Mesozoic crustal thinning area in South China. Although the porphyry copper deposits of these three periods show arc magma affinity in geochemistry, the Nd-Sr isotope of the porphyries indicate the contribution of mantle to mineralization vary from the regions and the metallogenic types. The geological facts prove that the lithosphere of South China has undergone obvious extension during these three periods. The extent of lithospheric extension may vary in different regions of South China in each period. Therefore, we called the porphyry copper deposit from these three episodes as " intra-continental extensional porphyry copper deposit". The metallogenic mechanism of the Mesozoic intra-continental extensional porphyry copper deposits may be related to the upwelling of asthenosphere under the lithospheric extension background, which resulting in the transformation of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle or lower crust.
Multi-million-year magmatic and hydrothermal activity is key to the formation of supergiant to behemothian porphyry copper deposits

Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology

Abstract:Understanding the primary controls on mineral deposit formation and size is essential for sourcing the metals required by our ever-growing economy. The tonnage of porphyry copper deposits ranges five orders of magnitude but the key mechanisms and processes that modulate the size of these deposits remain enigmatic. Here, we investigate the behemothian deposits of the Chuquicamata Intrusive Complex (CIC) in northern Chile employing high-precision U–Pb and Re–Os geochronology. We resolve a complex long-lived magmatic-hydrothermal activity that lasted over 3.3 Myr. High-precision zircon petrochronology data indicate two distinct porphyry emplacement episodes, separated by 0.5 Myr, with the younger generation closely tied to the main intervals of hydrothermal mineralization. High-precision Re–Os molybdenite dates reveal a prolonged hydrothermal mineralization interval (> 2.5 Myr) that progressively migrated southwards within the CIC and continued after the end of the (apparent) magmatic activity. We show that the rate of copper precipitation varies little in nature (0.025–0.10 Mt/kyr) and is independent of the size of the deposit. Consistent with evidence from smaller deposits, our findings provide unprecedented evidence that copper endowment in porphyry copper deposits positively correlates with the timescales of magmatic and hydrothermal activity. Supergiant to behemothian deposits require multi-million-year magmatic-hydrothermal activity, linking the largest porphyry copper systems to a simple metric – the duration of magmatic-hydrothermal activity.

Abstract:The Middle-Late Jurassic porphyry deposits with different element associations in the interior of South China Block are over 1000 kilometers away from subduction zone, which conflicts with the traditional belief that the porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposits were formed in the convergent margin. However, their genesis and geodynamics are still under debate. To address the above issues, this paper reports new geochronological, mineralogical, elemental and isotopic data for the Yuanzhuding porphyry deposit from Qin-Hang belt, and compared with the published data of porphyry deposits in this belt. The Yuanzhuding porphyry deposit has zircon U-Pb and molybdenite Re-Os ages of 154.6-155.2 Ma and 156.3 Ma respectively, which suggest that it is contemporaneous with the Middle-Late Jurassic Dexing, Baoshan and Dabaoshan porphyry deposits in the belt. The Yuanzhuding and Dexing porphyries have adakitic signatures and Nd-Hf isotopes similar to the contemporaneous EMI-type-mantle-derived mafic rocks featuring high Nb, P2O5 and LILEs/HFSEs values, suggestive of their roots in EMI-type lithospheric mantle hybridized by basaltic-slab-derived melts and pelagic-sediments-derived fluids. Combined with the slightly lower Nd isotopes of Yuanzhuding porphyry than Dexing porphyry, the fractionation modeling suggests that they were formed via AFC and FC processes of basaltic magma respectively and that their adakitic signatures can be attributed to hornblende fractionation. In contrast, the Baoshan and Dabaoshan porphyries have high Yb contents, low (La/Yb)N ratios and Nd-Hf isotopes similar to the Proterozoic crust in the region. Mineral and whole-rock elemental plots reveal that they were stemmed from FC processes of partial melts of the Proterozoic crust, with involvement of voluminous and a little EMI-type-mantle-derived basaltic magma respectively. Integrated with the spatio-temporal evolution of Triassic-Jurassic magmatic, metamorphic, sedimentary, tectonic and structural records in the region, the petrogenesis of ore-forming porphyries indicates that the porphyry deposits were controlled by the northwestward flat-slab subduction and related slab break-off. The basaltic magma sourced from the EMI-type mantle had high Cu, H2O and S contents and oxidized signature, which are favorable for the formation of Dexing porphyry Cu-Au-Mo mineralization via differentiation and volatile exsolution in a closed magma chamber. Also, it can incorporate crustal materials via AFC processes, thus forming Yuanzhuding porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization. In addition, the thick crust caused by flat-slab subduction facilitated the input of voluminous and a little basaltic magma into crustal Baoshan and Dabaoshan porphyries, thus generating Pb-Zn-Cu-Mo and Mo-W-Pb-Zn mineralization, respectively. We, therefore, propose that the "intraplate" porphyry deposits with different element associations result from complicated crust-mantle interaction in the thick "intraplate" crust, and that their metallogenic elements will change from Cu-Au-Mo- to Mo-W-Pb-Zn-dominated mineralization with the transformation of magma sources from enriched-mantle- to continental-crust-dominated materials.

Abstract:Porphyry Cu deposits (PCDs) in collisional orogens are new targets for modern mineral exploration. A series of post-collisional (Miocene; 22-12Ma) porphyry copper deposit (PCDs) with Cu reserve over 45 Mt have been discovered in the Gangdese magmatic belt, southern Tibet. These magmas derived from partial melting of sulfide-bearing Tibetan juvenile lower crust are fertile for porphyry Cu in many aspects, such as high oxidation state, and rich volatiles such as water, S, and Cl, but some of individual plutons ended up with economic concentrations. The fundamental question remains what accounts for the significant Cu endowments. We measured the igneous zircon water contents of ore-related and barren high Sr/Y magmas in the Gangdese belt, southern Tibet and found that magmas that produce giant PCDs have lower zircon water contents than barren and small-deposit related magmas. Combined with previous fluid inclusions, magmatic breccias, apatite geochemistry, and thermal histories, which demonstrated higher initial water content in causative porphyries such as giant deposits of Qulong and Jiama, we believe that the lower zircon water content may be attributed to these magmas experiencing of faster cooling and sudden depressurization of a large, primed, volatile-saturated or supersaturated mid-upper crustal magma chamber, which could lead to rapid and voluminous volatile exsolution and fluid discharge. These processes caused intense hydrothermal alteration and large ore deposition. In contrast, magmas that experienced slow cooling and deep emplacement would undergo steady state degassing and weak alteration. The variable intrusive and thermal histories across Gangdese reflects interplay between surface and lithospheric dynamics within the Himalaya—Tibet orogen. Our findings suggest the difference of zircon water content reflects the emplacement rate and depth of granitic body, and therefore may serve as an indicator for tectonics and potential for mineralization.

Abstract:Continental collision-related porphyry copper (Cu) deposits provide significant global copper resources, but their genesis remains controversial because it is not clear whether remelting of remnant arc-derived lower-crustal Cu-rich cumulates is critical to their formation. We investigated zircon and apatite compositions of the Jiru porphyry Cu deposit in the Gangdese belt of southern Tibet, which is characterized by weaker early Eocene mineralization and more pronounced strate that apatite hosted in zircon can record the volatile compositions of magma before fluid exsolution. Zircon-hosted apatites from the early Eocene granite that have low XF/XCl ratios (53) and are interpreted to have crystallized from volatile-undersaturated magma have Cl contents of 0.96-2.14 wt% (1.86 +/- 0.38 wt%; n = 15) and SO3 contents of 0.01-0.14 wt% (0.08 +/- 0.04 wt%; n = 15). In contrast, zircon-hosted apatites from the Miocene porphyry that have low XF/XCl ratios (510) and are interpreted to have crystallized from volatile-undersaturated magma have Cl contents of 0.40-0.56 wt% (0.47 +/- 0.06 wt%; n = 11) and SO3 contents of 0.20-0.92 wt% (0.59 +/- 0.29 wt%; n = 11). In addition, the early Eocene magma was relatively reduced (Delta FMQ = 0.86 +/- 0.55, compared with the oxidized Miocene magma (Delta FMQ = 2.04 +/- 0.43). The contrasting magmatic oxidation states and apatite/melt S contents were likely critical in controlling the different scales of Cu mineralization during the early Eocene and Miocene, as more highly oxidized magma can dissolve much larger amounts of sulfur and metals (e.g., Cu). Melt Cl content may not play a critical role in magma fertility, since the Jiru early Eocene granite had higher melt Cl contents than the rhotite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite) were not recognized in the Miocene zircons but did occur in the early Eocene zircons, and these sulfides were demonstrated to have crystallized before fluid exsolution in the shallow magma reservoir. The Jiru early Eocene magmatic sulfide saturation might not have enhanced the amount of copper available to hydrothermal fluids during the early Eocene. Late-stage sulfide saturation in the previous arc magmas might reduce the potential for that is associated with remelting of the previ ous arc lower crust.

Abstract:Major controls on the generation of ore-forming magmas for porphyry Cu systems remain controversial. This study provides a comprehensive dataset for the Wulonggou porphyries, which host intrusion-related gold deposits without any porphyry-skarn Cu mineralization, in the eastern Kunlun Orogen to investigate the influence of magmatic sources and differentiation processes on ore-forming magmas. The Wulonggou porphyries have a parental magma of basaltic andesite in composition derived from the oceanic crust in a post-collisional setting, which supplied sufficient Cu to the transcrustal magma plumbing system. The first-type amphibole crystallized after spinel, olivine and clinopyroxene at the lower crust. Spinel crystallization resulted in a decreased oxygen fugacity responsible for the formation of monosulfide solid solution that locked some Cu at the lower crust. At the upper crust, crystallization of calcic plagioclase cores and clinopyroxene was followed by magnetite, biotite, the second-type amphibole, and the mantles of normally zoned plagioclase. Magnetite and sulfide inclusions in the second-, third-type amphiboles and in patchy zoned plagioclase indicate reduced oxygen fugacities as well as the magnetite crystallization and sulfide saturation. Volatile exsolution was suggested by Cl and F variations in the second-type amphibole. The copper contents of corresponding melts calculated from amphibole phenocrysts are similar to those of normal arc magmas. Copper-rich sulfide saturation and subsequent volatile exsolution at the upper crust favor Cu-Au mineralization whereas the countryrocks and structures prefer intrusion-related gold deposits. Upper crustal magmatic differentiation processes are important for the generation of ore-forming magmas in post-collisional and subduction settings where a thick crust exists.

Abstract:Abstract Porphyry Cu ore deposits are a rare product of arc magmatism that often form spatiotemporal clusters in magmatic arcs. The petrogenetic evolution of igneous rocks that cover the temporal window prior to and during porphyry Cu deposit formation may provide critical insights into magmatic processes that are key in generating these systems. This study documents the magmatic evolution of the Palaeocene–Eocene Yarabamba Batholith, Southern Peru, that was incrementally assembled between ~ 67 and ~ 59 Ma and hosts three, nearly contemporaneous, giant porphyry Cu–Mo deposits that formed at 57–54 Ma (Quellaveco, Toquepala and Cuajone). Whole-rock geochemistry, U–Pb geochronology and zircon trace element chemistry are reported from Yarabamba rocks that span the duration of plutonic activity, and from six porphyry intrusions at Quellaveco that bracket mineralisation. A change in whole-rock chemistry in Yarabamba intrusive rocks to high Sr/Y, high La/Yb and high Eu/Eu* is observed at ~ 60 Ma which is broadly coincident with a change in vector of the converging Nazca plate and the onset of regional compression and crustal thickening during the first stage of the Incaic orogeny. The geochemical changes are interpreted to reflect a deepening of the locus of lower crustal magma evolution in which amphibole ± garnet are stabilised as early and abundant fractionating phases and plagioclase is suppressed. Zircons in these rocks show a marked change towards higher Eu/Eu* (> 0.3) and lower Ti (< 9 ppm) compositions after ~ 60 Ma. Numerical modelling of melt Eu systematics and zircon-melt partitioning indicates that the time series of zircon Eu/Eu* in these rocks can be explained by a transition from shallower, plagioclase-dominated fractionation to high-pressure amphibole-dominated fractionation at deep crustal levels from ~ 60 Ma. Our modelling suggests that any redox effects on zircon Eu/Eu* are subordinate compared to changes in melt composition controlled by the fractionating mineral assemblage. We suggest that growth and intermittent recharge of the lower crustal magma reservoir from ~ 60 Ma produced a significant volume of hydrous and metallogenically fertile residual melt which ascended to the upper crust and eventually generated the three giant porphyry Cu–Mo deposits at Quellaveco, Toquepala and Cuajone from ~ 57 Ma. Our study highlights the importance of high-pressure magma differentiation fostered by strongly compressive tectonic regimes in generating world-class porphyry Cu deposits.

Abstract:The subduction of the ocean–continent transition (OCT) zone on a passive margin has received limited attention, despite its significant impact on tectono-magmatic processes. This study focuses on the Late Triassic basalts and andesites in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, where the Yushu-Yidun Arc belt intersects the Longmen Shan Fault system. The goal is to understand the interplay between these linear systems. The basalts exhibit trace element and isotopic signatures resembling those of within-plate enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts or ocean island basalts (EOBs), such as positive NbTa anomalies, high Nb/Th (7.72 to 10.3) and εNd (t) (+2.23 to +6.34) values, and low La/Sm values (2.69 to 4.05), suggesting an asthenospheric mantle source. The contemporaneous andesites display typical arc-like geochemical characteristics (e.g., enrichment in Ba, Th, and U but depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti), with negative εNd (t) values (−2.41 to −1.08), indicating a mantle wedge source affected by subducted components. Geological evidence indicates that the Longmen Shan Fault zone, previously defined by its magmatic rocks, was an active OCT belt during the Late Triassic, separating the South China Continent from the Garze–Litang Ocean. Consequently, we propose a model suggesting the tearing of a subducted oceanic slab from the continental lithosphere within the OCT belt under the southernmost segment of the Yushu-Yidun Arc belt, driven by strong slab pull in the Garze-Litang Ocean subduction zone. This model effectively explains the intriguing geology of the Songpan-Garze-Hoh Xil Terrane, in which Late Triassic EOBs and normal arc-related igneous rocks coexist and are accompanied by abundant slab-derived mineralized porphyries. Our findings have global implications for investigating geochemically diverse magmatism and associated mineralization on passive continental margins.
