Abstract:Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals of ending all forms of poverty by 2030 is a crucial global challenge. Despite some progress worldwide, more than 600 million people were living in extreme poverty in 2019,1 around 100 million of whom were pushed into poverty due to health-care costs.2 The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the problem in 2020, pushing an estimated 150 million people into extreme poverty (defined as living on less than US$1·90 per day).3
