Abstract:The phenomenon of male livestreamers promoting beauty products (e.g., lipstick) to female viewers in the e-commerce livestreaming setting has gained popularity in China. However, the mechanism behind this phenomenon is unclear. Drawing on parasocial interaction (PSI) theory, this study provides a new explanation from the perspective of parasocial romantic relationships (PSRRs; imagined romantic relationships or an imaginary love). It specifically proposes that female viewers’ perceived attractiveness of male livestreamers may trigger PSRRs, which then reinforce their purchase intentions. The results from an experiment ( N = 408) and a survey ( N = 664) convergently supported this prediction. Moreover, the findings reveal that the positive effect of perceived attractiveness on PSRRs was more pronounced for extroverted viewers than for introverts. Similarly, the mediating role of PSRRs in the influence of the attractiveness of male livestreamers on female viewers’ purchase intentions was stronger for extroverts than introverts. These findings support PSRRs as a new mechanism through which male livestreamers can trigger female consumers’ purchase intention and the use of e-commerce livestreaming hosted by attractive male livestreamers to promote female beauty products.
