Abstract:The development of multispectral detection has made multi‐spectra compatible camouflage technology highly important, and compatible camouflage of visible and infrared bands is a prerequisite. Painted camouflage with patterns is a conventional means against visible reconnaissance, but high infrared emissivity of paints is not appropriate for infrared camouflage. Moreover, it is practically difficult to form camouflage patterns with existing low‐emissivity materials due to the lack of adequate colors. In this study, we propose a method to reduce the emissivity of camouflage while maintaining its original color. This is achieved by using metafilm that reflect most infrared radiation to create low‐emissivity coatings on camouflage, and optimizing the thickness of the metafilm through genetic algorithms, effectively reducing color differences between uncoated and coated camouflage. When the uncoated substrate is monochromatic, the minimum color difference between the film‐coated and uncoated substrates can be as low as 0.61, and the mean infrared emissivity is lower than 0.03. In the case of patterned camouflage composed of multiple colors, the low‐emissivity metafilm was designed based on an area‐weighted color difference which was calculated to be 9.09 and provided camouflage patterns with an infrared emissivity of 0.05. To demonstrate the proposed idea, we prepared a camouflage with colorful patterns and low emissivity according to grassland backgrounds. A painted camouflage substrate was coated with the designed metafilm via magnetron sputtering. When placed on grassland, the metafilm‐coated camouflage was visually blended with the background. Infrared thermography showed that when uncoated and coated camouflages were both heated to 50°C, with a background temperature of 29.2°C, the radiant temperature of the bare camouflage was 43.0°C, while that of the coated camouflage was 29.5°C, making the coated camouflage difficult to distinguish from the background. The metafilm design proposed in this work can significantly reduce the infrared emissivity of camouflage patterns and maintain the original colors and patterns, making camouflage for both the visible and infrared bands.
