Effects of Rice-Crayfish Farming on Soil Cnp Storage and Stoichiometry

Abstract:The shift from rice monoculture (RM) to rice-crayfish farming profoundly affects soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (CNP) concentrations by altering soil structure and nutrient inputs. However, the effects of rice-crayfish farming on soil CNP stoichiometry and storage are unknown. This study examined the patterns of soil CNP storage and stoichiometry at different soil layers (0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm depth) in rice monoculture and rice-crayfish systems (after 1, 6, 10, and 15 years) scattered in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, China. Compared to those of rice monoculture, the C, N, and P stocks increased by 4.1–10.9, 0.1–0.9, and 0.03–0.4 Mg ha −1 at soil depths of 0–30 cm in 6-, 10-, and 15-year rice-crayfish systems, respectively. The soil C:N ratio increased significantly, by 5–18%, in the 0–20 cm layer in 6-, 10-, and 15-year rice-crayfish systems but decreased by 4–10% in the 20–30 cm layer. The soil C:P ratio increased significantly, by 6–25%, compared with that of RM soil in 6-, 10-, and 15-year rice-crayfish systems. The soil N:P ratio in the 20–30 cm layer was significantly higher in the 6-, 10-, and 15-year rice-crayfish systems than in the RM system. By contrast, the soil N:P ratios at 0–20 cm depth in 6-, 10-, and 15-year rice-crayfish systems were significantly lower than that of RM soil. Principal component and redundancy analyses showed that soil structure and nutrient status significantly affected CNP stoichiometry. Overall, changes in soil structure and nutrients due to rice-crayfish farming resulted in more pronounced differences in soil CNP stoichiometric ratio and storage.
