Abstract:The rapid population growth in China has increased the demand for limited water, energy and food resources. Because the resource supply is constrained by future uncertainties such as climate change, it is necessary to examine the connections among water, energy and food resources from the perspective of the relevant final demands. Based on an input-output model and structural path analysis, this study aims to explore the hidden connections among water, energy and food resources by identifying important final demands and examine how these resources are embodied in upstream production and downstream consumption processes along the supply chain. The water-energy-food nexus approach in this research identifies where and how these resources intersect in economic sectors. By simultaneously considering the water, energy and food footprints, synergistic effects can be maximized among these resource systems. The results reveal that urban household consumption and fixed capital formation have large impacts on water-energy-food resources. Besides, agriculture, construction and service sectors have the largest water-energy-food footprints. For each resource, we rank the top-20 supply chain paths from the final demands to the upstream production sectors, and six critical supply chain paths are identified as important contributors to the consumption of all these resources. Compared with independent approach to manage water, energy and food resources, the nexus approach identifies the critical linkages of the water, energy and food systems and helps to formulate integrated policies to effectively manage these resources across sectors and actors. Synergistic strategies for conserving water, energy, and food resources can be achieved through avoiding unnecessary waste in end uses and improving resource use efficiency along critical supply chains. This research can help consumers, industries and the government make responsible consumption and production decisions to conserve water, energy and food resources.

Abstract:Managing the energy-water-food nexus for sustainable development 1. Nexus approach to address the close linkages between energy, water and food Energy, water and food are all basic human needs.The three are intricately related.For example, globally, food production accounts for about 70% of water abstractions and 90% of water consumption, respectively [1].In 2014, primary energy production and power generation accounted for roughly 10% of total worldwide water abstractions [2].About 30% of global energy use is for food production and its supply chain [3], and 8% for water withdrawal and transportation, and sewage treatment [4].Due to the close linkages between energy, water and food, a nexus approach has been a main research topic in recent years and becomes a global concern [5][6][7].Researchers often use different terms to refer to the nexus: while energy experts speak of the energy-water-food (EWF) nexus, hydrologists often say water-energy-food (WEF) nexus, and agronomists may like to use food-energy-water (FEW).We consider all these terms have the same meaning.A milestone event for the EWF nexus research was the Water-Energy-Food Security Nexus Conference hold in Bonn, Germany, in 2011, which started using the nexus terminology for the first time [8].The Bonn conference concluded that securing food, energy and water supply are intricately related.A comprehensive insight into the EWF nexus is key to developing a better understanding of the relationships among the three elements, and providing comprehensive strategies for sustainable solutions [9].This conference also concluded that a multidisciplinary approach should be used to understand the EWF nexus.Since the Bonn conference, the nexus research has drawn increasing global concerns.In 2013, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific released the report Water-Food-Energy Nexus in Asia and the Pacific Region [10].In 2014, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations illustrated the nexus from a food-security perspective and suggested that the nexus should be treated as a reference for policy making on food security and agricultural sustainable development [11].Future Earth (2014-2023), a ten-year scientific project initiated by the International Science Council and the International Social Science Council, set up a unique knowledge-action network (http://www.futureearth.org/future-earth-water-energy-food-nexus)on the EWF nexus to advance our scientific understanding and derive implications for efficient and sustainable resources use.The Scientific Decade

Abstract:<p>Challenges of high energy efficiency, water saving, low-carbon emissions, waste management and food saving have been considerable pressures on both regional and global sustainable development. This paper reviews the water-energy extended nexuses (e.g. food, greenhouse gases, waste, pollution, land and others) from the perspective of relationship and practicability in relieving the challenges towards environmentally-related sustainable development goals. A specific issue identified is that with the popularity of "nexus" and extension beyond resources nexus, the positioning and identity of nexuses become ambiguous. In most cases, nexus is a more attractively sounding term to replace specific expressions such as multi-criteria optimisation, trade-offs, correlation/relationship, input-output assessment, material flow analysis, and integrated design. The methodologies (e.g. input-output analysis and life cycle assessment) entail needing to be adequately integrated or expanded for diverse water-energy extended nexuses. It is crucial for evaluating resource flows in multiple regions and sectors and assessing the associated environment-economic impacts. A standardised understanding like establishing life cycle assessment and even more quantified footprints could ensure that the nexus would not fall as the group of a buzzword and contribute to sustainable development goals. This study serves as a stepping stone to establish quantified characteristics or components as eligibility to classify as nexus approaches and studies.</p>

A simulation and risk assessment framework for water-energy-environment nexus: A case study in the city cluster along the middle reach of the Yangtze River, China

Abstract:In the Anthropocene, there is a strong interlinkage among water, energy, and the environment. The water-energy-environment nexus (WEEN) has been vigorously advocated as an emerging development paradigm and a global research agenda. Based on the nexus concept, a framework for the WEEN complex system simulation and risk assessment is developed. The three metropolitan areas of the city cluster along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (CCMRYR) are taken as the objects. Regional policies are combined with generic shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) to form a localized SSPs suitable for the research region. The dynamic simulation of the WEEN complex system and the risk analysis are carried out with the combination of system dynamics models and copula functions. Results show that: There are obvious differences in water utilization, energy consumption, air pollutant emissions, and water pollutant emissions among the three metropolitan areas. The issue of high carbon intensity in the Wuhan Metropolitan Coordinating Region needs to be emphasized and solved from the perspective of optimizing the industrial structure. Adhering to current development patterns, there will be successive peaks in water utilization, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in Wuhan, Dongting Lake, and Poyang Lake Metropolitan Coordinating Region by 2030, leading to high synergy risks at the systemic level, with maximum values of 0.84, 0.85, 0.62, respectively. A development path based on conservation priorities indicates that future policymaking needs to prioritize a resource-saving and pollution-control development pattern directed by technological upgrading against the backdrop of scarce natural resource endowments. The localized SSPs are a beneficial extension that enriches the narrative of regional-scale SSPs. The evolutionary trajectories and risk assessments of WEEN complex systems under different localized SSPs provide a sweeping insight into the consequences of policy decisions, thus enabling policymakers to appraise policy rationality and implement appropriate corrective measures.

Abstract:<p>Energy security, food security, and water security have become the three most prominent problems in human survival and sustainable development. The three are interrelated and directly affect each other; that is, there exists a nexus between, energy, food, and water (EFW). A scientific understanding and correct response to this is important for achieving the sustainable development of natural resources. This study uses quantitative analysis to estimate the Central China region's energy-food production water footprint (WF) and virtual trade water flow from 2001 to 2016. It proposes a Modified Water Stress Index (MWSI) associated with virtual water outflows and evaluates the pressure exerted by virtual water flowing out, along with the effect of trade on local water resources systems. The results indicate that the energy and food production WF and virtual trade water flow are on the rise, causing water stress in local and export areas. Based on the adjustment of industrial structure, optimization of production technology, and rational regionalization of ecological divisions, the paper makes comprehensive policy recommendations to ensure the region's sustainable development of water resources for the future.</p>

Abstract:Adequate water, electricity, and food are essential for sustainable development. Regional conflicts intensified by global water, energy, and food shortages necessitate a rethinking of the security and interdependence of these resources. However, most earlier scholars concentrated on the subsystems of the water-energy-food nexus (WEF nexus), lacking holistic studies. Therefore, to understand the history and current state of research on the WEF nexus and predict future research directions, this study analyzed 1313 journal articles from the Web of Science database between 2007 and 2022 using the bibliometric analysis and Citespace software. The findings in this study indicate that (1) the progress of the WEF nexus research can be classified into three stages between 2007 and 2022: the early stage (2007-2010), the fast-developing stage (2011-2015), and the steady and in-depth stage (2016-2022). The WEF nexus has become a hot zone for academic research. (2) Map of the network of countries, institutions, and author collaborations implies tight academic collaboration among countries, institutions, and writers. (3) Climate change, integrated WEF nexus, sustainable development, and security are research hotspots in this field. Meanwhile, energy security, circular economy, and resource allocation are advanced subjects in this field. These key findings can provide managers and researchers with valuable information for decision-making.

Abstract:The water–energy–food (WEF) nexus attracts much attention due to the elevated public concern regarding environmental conservation and sustainability. As we head into a new era of civilization, population increase and modernized lifestyles have led to an increasing need for water, energy, and food. However, severe hydrological precipitation significantly impacts agricultural harvest, and such influence becomes more apparent under the influence of climate change. Meanwhile, the major method of electricity generation (i.e., fossil fuel burning) has a negative impact on the environment. These inevitable threats are crucial and have to be dealt with for a society on the road towards sustainability. In the present study, an integrated evaluation of the WEF nexus was conducted for two areas with different levels of urbanization using empirical multiple linear regression in a simultaneous equation model (SEM). By incorporating the collected data into the SEM, the weighting coefficient of each identified variable was obtained, and the nexus implication was assessed in model simulation at different scenarios considering the population growth, agro-technology advancement, energy structure improvement, and available water resources. In the simulated results, three observations were found: (1) the rural area is more sustainable than the urban one; (2) the sustainability for both the investigated areas is significantly subject to their water supply and demand; and (3) food production was found to have a less important effect on the sustainable development of the urban area. This study identified the key factors in the WEF nexus exploration, which are economically and environmentally important for resource allocation. An empirical model was developed to correlate sustainable achievement with WEF management, as well as strategic policies that should be implemented under the pressure of urbanization.

Abstract:Urban systems draw on food, energy, and water outside of their physical boundaries, and create environmental impacts which extend beyond city borders. All three of these resources face growing demand, supply constraints, and are of substantial importance to a sustainable world. Our world is increasingly urbanized, with cities having large and concentrated environmental impacts, but also the opportunity to implement unique sustainability solutions at scale. The interactions between food, energy, and water are best captured through a nexus view, identifying the full interactions between these resources. Topics of growing significance to urban systems are identified with their nexus connections. These connections facilitate complex sustainability challenges, but also can also be harnessed to promote coordinated solutions.
Food-energy-water Nexus Optimization Brings Substantial Reduction of Urban Resource Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Abstract:Urban sustainability is a key to achieving the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs). Secure and efficient provision of food, energy, and water (FEW) resources is a critical strategy for urban sustainability. While there has been extensive discussion on the positive effects of the FEW nexus on resource efficiency and climate impacts, measuring the extent to which such synergy can benefit urban sustainability remains challenging. Here, we have developed a systematic and integrated optimization framework to explore the potential of the FEW nexus in reducing urban resource demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Demonstrated using the Metropolis Beijing, we have identified that the optimized FEW nexus can reduce resource consumption and GHG emissions by 21.0 and 29.1%, respectively. These reductions come with increased costs compared to the siloed FEW management, but it still achieved a 16.8% reduction in economic cost compared to the business-as-usual scenario. These findings underscore the significant potential of FEW nexus management in enhancing urban resource efficiency and addressing climate impacts, while also identifying strategies to address trade-offs and increase synergies.

Abstract:Water is a stabilizer for production and life in the arid areas. According to research shared by the Pacific Institute and The Guardian, there were 228 incidents of water conflict globally in 2022. Therefore, comprehensive measures are necessary to achieve regional water security. This objective can be achieved by the application of interdisciplinary and professional approaches through establishing a dynamic equilibrium of the different water consumers, and trade-offs and synergies for water allocation between them. A multi-objective optimization model is proposed for managing the water-agriculture-energy-environment (WAEE) nexus in water-scarce areas. Real and integer-encoded multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (EMCMO) were applied to solving management models. Multiple objectives, such as the maximization of economic benefits from agriculture and hydropower generation, the minimization of ecological water shortages for local plants, and the minimization of environmental risks influenced by land use and food supply, were defined in the model. The model was applied to the Yanqi Basin, an important agriculture and energy producer in Xinjiang province, Northwest China. The results indicated that (1) the four-dimensional Pareto solution set has the advantage of presenting the WAEE nexus, highlighting the trade-offs and synergies between high-value crops, surface water, and groundwater, ecological water demand, hydropower generation and total nitrogen and phosphorus loading (TNP); (2) An excessive increase in the agricultural economy will increase TNP loading and agricultural non-point source pollution; (3) Optimization of WAFE for local ecosystem restoration. Optimization in a wet year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 0.20%, and agricultural TNP loading by 13.19% while increasing ecological water by 58.33%, and hydropower generation by 3.98%; in a normal year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 6.62%, agricultural TNP loading by 13.19% while increasing ecological water by 46.43%, and hydropower generation by 0.79%; in a dry year, reduced agricultural economic benefits by 17.19%, agricultural TNP loading by 9.72%, and hydropower generation by 16.18% while increasing ecological water by 42.86%. The trade-offs and synergies of the WAEE nexus also apply to other similar water-scarce areas.

Abstract:Climate change exacerbates uncertainties in water resource management, water supply, and treatment that are energy intensive and then exert great pressure on climate change mitigation; hence, interrelated and contradictory characteristics within the water-climate change (WC) nexus system are needed to be studied. The nexus thinking and coordination of WC would impact many realistic practices and assist in sustainable socioeconomic development since traditional single-target policies have sometimes been out of function. Hence, the ability to direct water production and use as well as climate change mitigation has become a hotspot recently. Furthermore, we find that there has been no complete research on reviewing the impacts of the WC nexus in different areas on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Hence, this paper builds a core nexus of WC and then analyzes those effects on social and environmental aspects in many areas, including sewage treatment, energy transition, waste treatment, land management, and ocean management. This paper discusses how WC interlinkages are utilized to realize SDGs in those areas. Moreover, uncertainties derived from exogenous hydrology, climate change, and anthropogenic endogenous systems for realistic problems appeal to gradually increasing concern. Finally, implications offer valuable guidelines for integrated management of water and carbon emissions, as well as sustainable socioeconomic development in the future.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

Abstract:In the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation, the concept of the water-energy-food nexus (WEF nexus) has resulted in an increased focus on the long-neglected potential trade-offs between the water, energy, and food sector. In this study, we obtained 3077 publications from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) in the Web of Science. A bibliometric method was used to characterize the publications, the participating countries, and the research trends in the field of the WEF nexus. The results show (i) the number of scientific publications increased exponentially from 2011 to June 2019, with an average annual growth rate of 27.87%. (ii) The Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres had the most publications related to WEF nexus research. (iii) Environmental Sciences Ecology was the subject category with the most publications. (iv) WEF nexus research was led by the USA, which produced 40.14% of the publications in this field, and five of the ten most influential institutions are American institutions. (v) China ranked in second place regarding publication volume and exceeded the UK in 2016 in annual publications. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most productive research institution. (vi) Academic collaboration between countries was widespread in the WEF nexus field; the top 10 most productive countries all had high proportions of collaborative publications (> 40%), and Austria had the highest percentage (91.49%). (vi) Co-word analysis indicated that the term map had three clusters in 1988–2011 focusing on biological production, climate and meteorology, and land surface research. In 2012–2019, the term map also had three clusters, including experimental research on recyclables, resource management, and land-atmosphere interactions. Frequency analysis of the keywords in different countries showed different research emphases in the top 10 most productive countries. The analyses of frequently used keywords also revealed the research hotspots and trends. "Climate change" was the second most frequently used keyword in these countries. The interpretation of climate change mitigation and adoption strategies from the WEF nexus perspective is an important research direction.

Optimizing sustainable development in arid river basins: A multi-objective approach to balancing water, energy, economy, carbon and ecology nexus

Abstract:The ongoing water crisis poses significant threats to the socioeconomic sustainability and ecological security of arid and semi-arid river basins. Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within a complex socio-ecological nexus requires effective and balanced resource management. However, due to the intricate interactions between human societies and environmental systems, the tradeoffs and synergies of different SDGs remain unclear, posing a substantial challenge for collaborative management of natural resources. Here we introduce a gray fractional multi-objective optimization (GFMOP) model to balance multi-dimensional SDGs through a novel water-energy-economy-carbon-ecology nexus perspective. The model was applied to a typical arid river basin in Northwest China, where thirty-two scenarios were explored, considering factors such as shared socioeconomic pathways, carbon removal rates, water conveyance efficiencies, and ecological requirements. The results reveal a strong tradeoff between marginal benefit and carbon emission intensity, indicating that improving the economic efficiency of water use can simultaneously reduce emissions and protect the environment. Given the immense power generation potential, wind power development should be prioritized in the future, with its share in the energy structure projected to increase to 23.3% by 2060. Furthermore, promoting carbon capture technologies and expanding grassland coverage are recommended to achieve regional carbon neutrality, contributing 39.5% and 49.1% to carbon absorption during 2021-2060, respectively. Compared with traditional single-objective models, GFMOP demonstrates a superiority in uncovering interrelationships among multiple SDGs and identifying compromised alternatives within the compound socio-ecological nexus. The model also provides detailed strategies for resource allocation and pollutant control, offering valuable guidance to policymakers and stakeholders in pursuing sustainable and harmonious watershed management.
Investigation of the interactions and influencing factors of the Water-Land-Energy-Carbon system in the Yellow River Basin

Abstract:The survival and advancement of human society are fundamentally dependent on the availability and sustainable management of water, land, and energy resources. The development and utilisation of various energy sources and a considerable number of natural resources lead to carbon emissions. A complex interplay exists between water, land, energy, and carbon, and their correlation lies at the core of the regional "natural-social-economic" system, which is crucial for human existence and advancement. Despite its importance, research on the water-land-energy‑carbon (WLEC) nexus is limited. In this study, we employed an innovative combination of the comprehensive assessment index, coupled coordination degree, panel vector autoregressive, and random forest models to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution, internal dynamic interactions, and external influencing factors of the WLEC system in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) from 2007 to 2021. The findings revealed that the degree of coupled coordination in the WLEC system of the YRB exhibited an overall steady upward trend. The spatial agglomeration effect was continuously enhanced, and regional disparities increased. Complex interaction mechanisms exist within the water, land, energy, and carbon subsystems in the YRB. Population size, land relief, and sunshine are the prevailing factors influencing the degree of coupling coordination in the WLEC. Addressing the trade-off relationship among the subsystems of the WLEC system is a key aspect of optimising its correlation relationship. This study provides a scientific basis and relevant suggestions for achieving the Double-Carbon Goal, promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the YRB.

Abstract:Food, energy and water are important basic resources that affect the sustainable development of a region. The influence of food–energy–water (FEW) nexus on sustainable development has quickly become a frontier topic since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were put forward. However, the overall context and core issues of the FEW nexus contributions to SDGs are still unclear. Using co-citation analysis, this paper aims to map the knowledge domains of FEW nexus research, disentangles its evolutionary context, and analyzes the core issues in its research, especially the progress of using quantitative simulation models to study the FEW nexus. We found that (1) studies within the FEW nexus focused on these following topics: correlation mechanisms, influencing factors, resource footprints, and sustainability management policies; (2) frontier of FEW studies have evolved from silo-oriented perspective on single resource system to nexus-oriented perspective on multiple systems; (3) quantitative research on the FEW nexus was primarily based on spatiotemporal evolution analysis, input–output analysis and scenario analysis; (4) the resource relationship among different sectors was synergies and tradeoffs within a region. In general, current research still focuses on empirical data, mostly qualitative and semiquantitative analyses, and there is a lack of research that can systematically reflect the temporal and spatial contribution of the FEW nexus to multiple SDGs. We believe that future research should focus more on how FEW nexus can provide mechanistic tools for achieving sustainable development.

Mapping urban energy–water–land nexus within a multiscale economy: A case study of four megacities in China

Abstract:Energy, water, and land (EWL) are typical elements in urban food-energy-water systems. With the expansive growth of urbanization and the economy, the demands for EWL keep increasing and pose significant challenges to urban sustainability. Previous studies mostly focused on one or two elements flows through sectoral approaches while ignoring the interconnectedness of food-energy-water subsystems and the complexity of an open urban system. Here, we adopted a nexus view to track the urban EWL flows not only within local but also across regional, national, and even global supply chains from the production- and consumption-based perspectives using the environmentally extended multiscale input-output model (EE-MSIO). The four Chinese municipalities (i.e., Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), also known as megacities, were selected as our cases. Our results revealed that all four megacities were consumption-oriented cities for EWL resources. Nearly 72%–77%, 87%–92%, and 95%–99% of the consumption-based energy, water, and land flows were sourced from outside the geographical boundaries of Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, respectively. Domestic regions were the major suppliers for the four megacities. This analysis can help policy-makers to develop more effective and targeted strategies for complicated urban ecological resources management.

Unfolding the synergy and interaction of water-land-food nexus for sustainable resource management: A supernetwork analysis

Abstract:Given the large amounts of water, land, and food embodied in the trade of goods and services, a key step in decoupling extensive resource consumption from the economic system is to understand the full impact of socioeconomic development on the water-land-food nexus. This study integrates input-output analysis, ecological network analysis, and Dempster-Shafer evidence theory into a supernetwork model to detect the water-land-food nexus among economic sectors with an aim to explore effective strategic paths for resource management and to facilitate the construction of a resource-saving society. Results show that most sectors of China are resource inefficient and that all resource systems are unsustainable as reflected in the low performance of their Finn's cycling index and system robustness. Meanwhile, results of flow networks analysis show an extremely uneven land resource allocation where more than 94% of the land used in China is classified as direct agricultural land. The water-land-food nexus can gain resource saving bonus via enhancing the robustness of economy. However, the co-benefits from the nexus are negligibly small for the resource utilization efficiency. The results also indicate that the relevant resource-saving policies on food and water are highly likely to gain resource co-benefits due to their similarities in sectoral importance. Correspondingly, a set of strategic measures, including adopting a tiered resource price, deepening industrial convergence of agriculture, enhancing agriculture-food nexus, and managing water or land use from the food consumer side, are designed to build a resource-saving society. The findings of this study can provide additional insights into the impacts of the economy on the water-land-food nexus, which is beneficial for achieving an efficient and coordinated management of resources.

Abstract:Water is needed to generate energy. Energy is required to deliver, clean, and evaporate water. There are extensive linkages between water and energy. Meanwhile, both resources may limit the other, especially in the context of urbanization and industrialization as well as climate change. Due to the large population and fast-growing economy, China is one of the most water and energy shortage countries in the world. Relations between water and energy are particularly strained. Unfortunately, up to now, little attention has been paid to the tension relation between water and energy in China. Studying water and energy nexus can provide more information than investigating them separately because of their concomitant relationship. In this paper, we reviewed the recent situations on these issues in China, mainly focused on the following topics: 1) energy consumption in water industry; 2) water consumption and energy nexus in energy industry and urban; 3) water and energy nexus in agriculture; and 4) Energy consumption by evapotranspiration and its cooling effect on reducing urban temperature. Extensive data are analyzed and reported in this study, which will be useful for policy making by taking account of climate change, urbanization, and population growth.

Abstract:Water, energy, and food are indispensable resources for regional social and economic development. The cross-regional resource transfer can increase the complexity in the coordinated management of water, energy, and food in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao regions. This study proposed a footprint accounting framework for cross-regional water, energy, and food nexus, which incorporates direct flows within territory and nexus flows embodied in final consumption. An environmentally extended multi-regional input-output model was established to quantify water, energy, food, water-related energy, food-related energy, energy-related water, and food-related water footprints in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao regions. The results indicated that direct energy footprint was 5.3 times of food-related and water-related energy footprints, and energy-related and food-related water footprints were 3.8 times of direct water footprint. Inter-regional trade plays an important role in the management of the water, energy, and food nexus in three regions. Hong Kong and Macao outsource huge water, energy, and food nexus footprints by importing freshwater, electricity, and food from Guangdong to satisfy local demand. The proposed footprint framework could serve as indicators or tools for measuring sustainable development goals, and the results could provide the basis for the coordinated resources management of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao regions.
