Abstract:Ultrashort laser pulse has been widely used in various applications. Its parameters, such as the pulse duration and the spectral bandwidth, should be controlled accurately in order to achieve high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as high local field intensity. In this paper, we have proposed a method to trace the propagation of ultrashort pulses through optical systems, especially the complex optics. The approach, in which both the material's dispersion and optical aberrations are taken into consideration, is developed based on the geometrical ray-tracing combined with wave theories. This method is validated by simulating the propagation of a femtosecond pulse through a specific practical imaging system. As the numerical result shows that the spatial-temporal performances of pulses are influenced greatly by optical elements, the calibration arrangement is employed to compensate for those undesired distortions. The negative dispersion of the optical grisms (the combination of gratings and prisms) is utilized in the calibration process to offset the positive dispersion introduced by lenses. The final result shows effectiveness of the correction.
A Novel Visible Light Communication Channel Compensation and Reconstruction Algorithm for Linear Decomposed CPM Signals

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Coherent optical transponders are widely deployed in today’s long haul and metro optical networks using dense wavelength division multiplexing. To increase the data carrying capacity, the coherent transponder utilizes the high order modulation format and operates at a high baud rate. The limited bandwidth and the nonlinearity are two critical impairments for the coherent in-phase quadrature transmitter. These impairments can be mitigated by digital filters. However, to accurately determine the coefficients of these filters is difficult because the impairment from the limited bandwidth and the impairment from nonlinearity are coupled together. In this paper, we present a novel method to solve this problem. During the initial power-up, we apply a sinusoidal stimulus to the coherent IQ transmitter. We then scan the frequency and amplitude of the stimulus and monitor the output power. By curve-fitting with an accurate mathematical model, we determine the limited bandwidth, the nonlinearity, the power imbalance, and the bias point of the transponder simultaneously. Optimized coefficients of the digital filters are determined accordingly. Furthermore, we utilize a coherent IQ transponder and demonstrate that the limited bandwidth is improved by the finite impulse response filter, while nonlinearity is mitigated by the memoryless Volterra filter.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a new technique for measuring transceiver noise, skew, and for the detection of uncompensated transceiver impairments. The method consists on the introduction of frequency domain notch or notches at the transmitter, which allows to estimate of the Signal-to-Noise and Distortion Ratio (SNDR) at different stages over the transmission chain. The proposed technique requires the detection of the signal spectrum using either: a modem receiver, an Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA), an oscilloscope, or an Electrical Spectrum Analyzer (ESA), depending on the stage where the spectrum is measured and requiring minimal processing of the received signal. Our analysis is focused on Ciena's WaveLogic Ai commercial transceiver and a 95 Gbaud DAC. We demonstrate that symmetrically placed frequency domain notches can be used to mitiguate the influence of crosstalk on the SNDR estimates. Finally, we show how a single notch spectrum can be used to detect and compensate for impairments, and we perform skew estimation as an example.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have been extensively used in modern wireless communications. The front-end nonlinearity coupled with crosstalk in a MIMO transmitter is much more complex than that in a single-input single-output (SISO) system. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear crosstalk calibration algorithm with the corresponding reference signal design. We start with the nonlinear crosstalk model of the MIMO transmitter and derive its corresponding inverse compensation model. The proposed model characterizes the nonlinearity and the crosstalk in separated blocks. We then propose specifically designed reference signals that utilize the model structure. The nonlinear crosstalk model can be reorganized and simplified with the reference signal. Thus, the complexity of the model coefficients estimation is greatly reduced without compromising the model accuracy. In addition, with the proposed algorithm, the compensation of the nonlinearity and crosstalk can be done separately. Simulations show a satisfactory calibration results with low computational complexity.

Abstract:Recently, CFP2 pluggable platforms are widely developed and deployed in 100 G optical networks for its flexibility, increased density, and reduced power consumption. For CFP2-ACO modules, they introduce high-speed analog electrical pluggable channels in line cards and generate additional performance degradation. To mitigate the effects of nonlinearity and limited bandwidth in transmitters, receivers, and pluggable channels, the pre-equalization technique is introduced in optical transmission systems. In this paper, the pre-equalization technique in the transmitter for beyond 100 Gb/s system deploying CFP2-ACO pluggable modules and beyond PM-QPSK modulations, including PM-8-QAM, PM-16-QAM, and PM-64-QAM, are investigated and demonstrated. It has been studied by a theoretical analysis, validated by numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The deviations and reflections by design and manufacturing imperfections are investigated. Effective pre-equalization is achieved for improved optical signal-to-noise ratio and received optical power performance, as well as better stability in the presence of deviations and reflections. Two types of CFP2-ACO modules are tested in experiments: modules with limiting drivers and linear drivers. A comparison between different single carrier modulation formats is performed in both simulation and experiment, suggesting that high-speed systems have more stringent requirements on pre-equalization filter design and optimization, and is more sensitive to fluctuations and reflections in the line-card system.
An End-to-end Learning Framework for Joint Compensation of Impairments in Coherent Optical Communication Systems

Abstract:The application of machine learning techniques in Coherent Optical Communication (COC) systems has gained increasing attention in recent years. One representative and successful application is to employ neural networks to compensate the signal impairments of devices in the COC system. However, existing studies usually concentrate on each individual device or one impairment, the various impairments sourced from multiple devices (e.g., non-linear distortion, memory and crosstalk effects) are not well investigated. More importantly, due to the impairment isolation caused by frequency offset, traditional studies only compensate the impairments of transmitter or receiver individually. In this paper, we consider a more practical and challenging experimental setup environment: joint compensation of multiple impairments associated with all devices of transmitter and receiver simultaneously. To this end, we propose an end-to-end compensation framework from the transmitter to the receiver in COC systems with three associated modules: an auxiliary channel neural network for impairment modeling, a pre-compensation neural network deployed in the transmitter, and a post-compensation neural network deployed in the receiver. Different from previous works, the proposed framework not only allows modeling all impairments of multiple devices, but also provides a new venue for joint compensation of the transmitter and receiver simultaneously. The solution has been successfully verified by the high baud rate (120Gbaud) coherent optical professional test platform and shows impressive optical Signalto-Noise Ratio (SNR) gains.

Abstract:The achievable information rates of optical communication networks have been widely increased over the past four decades with the introduction and development of optical amplifiers, coherent detection, advanced modulation formats, and digital signal processing techniques. These developments promoted the revolution of optical communication systems and the growth of Internet, towards the direction of high-capacity and long-distance transmissions. The performance of long-haul high-capacity optical fiber communication systems is significantly degraded by transmission impairments, such as chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, laser phase noise and Kerr fiber nonlinearities. With the entire capture of the amplitude and phase of the signals using coherent optical detection, the powerful compensation and effective mitigation of the transmission impairments can be implemented using the digital signal processing in electrical domain. This becomes one of the most promising techniques for next-generation optical communication networks to achieve a performance close to the Shannon capacity limit. This chapter will focus on the introduction and investigation of digital signal processing employed for channel impairments compensation based on the coherent detection of optical signals, to provide a roadmap for the design and implementation of realtime optical fiber communication systems.

From experimental results, tolerance windows with PM-16-QAM are reduced significantly to 2.1/5.6/0.5-dB with attenuation/bandwidth/reflection impairments, comparing with 8.6/>10/4.5-dB from PM-QPSK.

Abstract:In this paper, we present Wiener model (W-model); Hammerstein model (H-model), and parallel Hammerstein model (PH-model) based equalization schemes, which are the reduction of general Volterra series model, for the nonlinear distortions compensation in short reach optical transmission. The principle of each model is presented and the performance of these Volterra-class models based NLEs are investigated through pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and carriless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) simulation system. A 28 Gb/s CAP16 experiment system over 15 km fiber link is also demonstrated using the proposed NLEs. Finally, a comparison of performance and complexity using different NLEs is conducted. Abstract:Electrical post-compensation of intrachannel nonlinearities in 10GBaud coherent QPSK transmission systems is proposed. The channel inversion method is implemented with a coarse split-step Fourier algorithm through digital signal processing at the receiver side. Simulation results show that simultaneous compensation of intrachannel nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion can be achieved with much simplified signal processing structure. The required optical signal-to-noise ratio at certain bit error ratio is remarkably reduced when the intrachannel nonlinearities induced impairments are dominant.

Abstract:Optical performance monitoring is vital for enabling dynamically reconfigurable optical networks. This paper introduces a monitoring scheme that is robust to transceiver impairments for coherent digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) systems that simultaneously monitors polarization-dependent loss (PDL), differential group delay (DGD), and chromatic dispersion (CD). In the proposed scheme, a pair of frequency domain pilot tones (FPTs) are inserted into the ${X}$ and ${Y}$ polarizations of the transmitted dual-polarization signal. Both the signal and the FPTs endure identical channel impairments during fiber transmission. At the receiver side, the transmitted FPTs are extracted to monitor the channel impairments. We begin by establishing a simplified system model using a single frequency tone to analyze the effects of system impairments on the frequency domain pilots. Based on this model, CD, PDL, and DGD are jointly and accurately estimated. In addition, the influences of temporal, amplitude, and phase mismatches between in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components of transceivers on channel impairment monitoring are completely eliminated. This achieves a channel impairment monitoring scheme that is robust to transceiver impairments. Experimental verification shows that the proposed scheme can jointly and accurately estimate a wide range of CD, PDL, and DGD. Additionally, the proposed monitoring scheme demonstrates strong robustness against transceiver impairments, rapid polarization fluctuations, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise.
Accurate Model to Predict Performance of Coherent Optical Transponder

Abstract:Coherent optical transponder is ubiquitous and dominant in long-haul optical network. Bit error rate (BER) versus optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) determines the transmission distance for coherent optical transponder. However, a complicated setup is needed for this measurement, which limits this measurement to laboratory environment. We have developed an accurate model to predict BER versus OSNR at various receiver optical power (ROP) under assumption of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The model has three parameters, which are related to noise floor, filter mismatching, and OSNR value without noise loading. We determined the first two parameters through curve fitting of BER vs. ROP curve. We determined the third parameters through design verification test (DVT). We validated the model over 100 channels within extended C band. Furthermore, we expanded the model to high modulation format 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). We investigated the influence of high baud rate, like 45G, 56G, 64G and 86G. The model works well for both high modulation format and high baud rate. The influence of baud rate on the fitting parameters are discussed. Since one can measure BER versus ROP using built-in components of coherent optical transponder, BER versus OSNR can be monitored during in-field deployment based on this accurate model. In addition, one can monitor OSNR based on BER reversely. No extra hardware or DSP processing algorithm is needed for this OSNR monitoring scheme. The monitoring accuracy is further improved with consideration of chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and nonlinearity impairment.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to compensate multi-channel mismatches that intrinsically exist in a photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) system. This system, nominated time-wavelength interleaved photonic ADC (TWI-PADC), is time-interleaved via wavelength demultiplexing/multiplexing before photonic sampling, wavelength demultiplexing channelization, and electronic quantization. Mismatches among multiple channels are estimated in frequency domain and hardware adjustment are used to approach the device-limited accuracy. A multi-channel mismatch compensation algorithm, inspired from the time-interleaved electronic ADC, is developed to effectively improve the performance of TWI-PADC. In the experiment, we configure out a 4-channel TWI-PADC system with 40 GS/s sampling rate based on a 10-GHz actively mode-locked fiber laser. After multi-channel mismatch compensation, the effective number of bit (ENOB) of the 40-GS/s TWI-PADC system is enhanced from ~6 bits to >8.5 bits when the RF frequency is within 0.1-3.1 GHz and from ~6 bits to >7.5 bits within 3.1-12.1 GHz. The enhanced performance of the TWI-PADC system approaches the limitation determined by the timing jitter and noise.
