Abstract:The reaction/diffusion kinetics are fundamentally determined by the electronic properties of supported Pd catalysts and further govern the catalytic activity and selectivity in the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, how the electronic metal-support interactions and the tradeoff between reaction and diffusion affect the catalytic performance still remain elusive. Here, the optimized catalyst Pd supported on carbon decorated with oxygen-deficient TiO2(Pd/TiO2-V-o@C) features a remarkable enhancement in performance for semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a TOF 31-fold higher than that of Lindlar catalyst. The improved performance of Pd/TiO2-V-o@C benefits from the fact that TiO2-V-o@C subtly modulates the electronic properties of Pd, and an appropriate amount of TiO2-V-o allows a decrease in the reaction barrier and C promotes the diffusion ability of the catalyst, achieving the balance between reaction and diffusion. By using microkinetic modeling, the reactivity difference of various catalysts is quantitatively predicted and the calculated turnover frequency volcano curve is rationalized as a function of reaction barrier and diffusion ability, which agrees well with the experimental results. The quantitative regulation of catalytic performance by tuning the support properties is a general strategy, which provides a basis to design robust catalysts for diverse reactions.

Abstract:Carbon-supported Pd4Au- and Pd2.5Sn-alloyed nanoparticles were prepared by a chemical reduction method, and characterized by a wide array of experimental techniques including mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Ethanol electrooxidation on the as-synthesized catalysts and commercial Pt/C was then investigated and compared in alkaline media by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies at room temperature. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements showed higher current density and longer term stability in ethanol oxidation with the palladium alloy nanocatalysts than with the commercial one. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel plots were employed to examine the charge-transfer kinetics of ethanol electrooxidation. The results suggest that whereas the reaction kinetics might be somewhat more sluggish on the Pd-based alloy catalysts than on commercial Pt/C, the former appeared to have a higher tolerance to surface poisoning. Overall, the Pd-based alloy catalysts represent promising candidates for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol, and Pd4Au/C displays the best catalytic activity among the series for the ethanol oxidation in alkaline media.
Rational Design of Nitrogen and Carbon Co-Decorated Mesoporous TiO2 Composites for Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of Alcohols

Abstract:Photocatalytic organic synthesis has attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, a N and C co-decorated mesoporous TiO2 (mp-NCT) photocatalyst was synthesized for selective oxidation of alcohols. Notably, the asprepared mp-NCT composites possess large specific surface areas and mesoporous structures, which could provide sufficient active sites and improve mass transfer. Furthermore, the co-doping of N and C species could not only extend the light absorption, but also tune the valence band of TiO2. Meanwhile, numerous oxygen vacancies and intra-band could be introduced, which helps to reduce the combination of the photogenerated carriers. As a result, the mp-NCT composites show excellent photocatalytic performance towards selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives to corresponding aldehydes under simulated sunlight irradiation. Mechanism studies revealed that the photogenerated electrons, holes and high dynamic equilibrium concentration of O2 center dot- radicals were responsible for the efficient conversion of alcohols to aldehydes.
Highly Active Nanoporous Pt-based Alloy As Anode and Cathode Catalyst for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:In this paper, we explore nanoporous PtPdAlCu (np-PtPdAlCu) quaternary alloy through ball-milling with the subsequent two-step dealloying strategy. The microstructure and catalytic performance of the np-PtPdAlCu catalyst have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical measurements. The np-PtPdAlCu catalyst exhibits an open bi-continuous interpenetrating ligament/channel structure with a length scale of 2.3 +/- 0.5 nm. The np-PtPdAlCu catalyst shows 2 and 3.5 times enhancement in the mass activity and area specific activity towards methanol oxidation at anode respectively, compared to the Johnson Matthey (JM) Pt/C (40 wt.%) catalyst. Moreover, the CO stripping peak of np-PtPdAlCu is 0.49 V (vs. SCE), indicating a 180 mV negative shift in comparison with the Pt/C catalyst (0.67 V vs. SCE). In addition, the np-PtPdAlCu catalyst also shows an enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity at cathode compared to Pt/C. Abstract:Visible‐light‐induced one‐pot, multistep, and chemoselectivity adjustable reactions highlight the economical, sustainable, and green process. Herein, we report Pt nanoparticles dispersed on S and N co‐doped titanium dioxide/titanium carbide (MXene) (3%Pt/D‐TiO2/Ti3C2) heterojunctions as photocatalysts for the tandem reactions between aromatic nitro compounds and alcohols to produce N‐alkylated products. 3%Pt/D‐TiO2/Ti3C2 heterojunction was prepared by in situ grew TiO2 on Ti3C2 nanosheets, S and N co‐doped TiO2 with thiourea, and then Pt nanoparticles with 2.9 nm average diameter well dispersed on D‐TiO2/Ti3C2. 3%Pt/D‐TiO2/Ti3C2 showed excellent activity and chemoselectivity to N‐alkyl amines in the presence of base additive K3PO4 under visible‐light irradiation; interestingly the chemoselectivity almost completely switched to N‐benzylideneanilines in the presence of base additive KOH. In comparison, Pt nanoparticles on S and N co‐doped TiO2 prepared from titanium carbide (3%Pt/D‐TiO2@C) showed sharply decreased activity and chemoselectivity to N‐alkyl amines or N‐benzylideneanilines. The enhanced performance of 3%Pt/D‐TiO2/Ti3C2 should be attributed to the improvement in photogenerated electron and hole separation efficiency by means of charge short‐range directional transmission caused by the intimate contact between the TiO2 and the conductive Ti3C2. In situ DRIFTS spectra further verified that the substrates activation with visible‐light irradiation at 25°C was much faster than heating.

Abstract:Abstract Selective reduction of ketone/aldehydes to alcohols is of great importance in green chemistry and chemical engineering. Highly efficient catalysts are still demanded to work under mild conditions, especially at room temperature. Here we present a synergistic function of single-atom palladium (Pd 1 ) and nanoparticles (Pd NPs ) on TiO 2 for highly efficient ketone/aldehydes hydrogenation to alcohols at room temperature. Compared to simple but inferior Pd 1 /TiO 2 and Pd NPs /TiO 2 catalysts, more than twice activity enhancement is achieved with the Pd 1+NPs /TiO 2 catalyst that integrates both Pd 1 and Pd NPs on mesoporous TiO 2 supports, obtained by a simple but large-scaled spray pyrolysis route. The synergistic function of Pd 1 and Pd NPs is assigned so that the partial Pd 1 dispersion contributes enough sites for the activation of C=O group while Pd NPs site boosts the dissociation of H 2 molecules to H atoms. This work not only contributes a superior catalyst for ketone/aldehydes hydrogenation, but also deepens the knowledge on their hydrogenation mechanism and guides people to engineer the catalytic behaviors as needed.

Abstract:Pt-based multimetallic nanorings with a hollow structure are attractive as advanced catalysts due to their fantastic structure feature. However, the general method for the synthesis of such unique nanostructures is still lack. Here we report the synthesis of Pd@PtM (M = Rh, Ni, Pd, Cu) multimetallic nanorings by selective epitaxial growth of Pt alloyed shells on the periphery of Pd nanoplates in combination with oxidative etching of partial Pd in the interior. In situ generation of CO and benzoic acid arising from interfacial catalytic reactions between Pd nanoplates and benzaldehyde are critical to achieve high-quality Pt-based multimetallic nanorings. Specifically, the in-situ generated CO promotes the formation of Pt alloyed shells and their epitaxial growth on Pd nanoplates. In addition, the as-formed benzoic acid and residual oxygen are responsible for selective oxidative etching of partial Pd in the interior. When evaluated as electrocatalysts, the Pd@PtRh nanorings exhibit remarkably enhanced activity and stability for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) compared to the Pd@PtRh nanoplates and commercial Pt/C due to their hollow nanostructures.

Abstract:Hydrogenation reactions are of great importance in scientific research and in industry productions. Herein, we designed a novel system to realize photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation by using solar light as the energy input and methanol as the hydrogen source. In this reaction, titania loaded with Pd-Pt bimetallic alloy nanocrystals as a cocatalyst exhibited photocatalytic performance that was remarkably superior to that exhibited by titania with Pd or Pt alone as the cocatalyst. This work has shed light on the rational design of multifunctional catalysts through selecting appropriate bimetallic alloys as efficient cocatalysts.

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalysis largely hinges on the design of the photocatalysts, which can be optimized for effective light absorption, improved charge separation and transport, and faster surface reactions. In this research, we developed a yolk-shell nanostructured photocatalyst featuring one-dimensional TiO2 nanorods (NRs) cores encapsulated within a porous silica shell. After photodepositing Pt nanoparticles (NPs) onto the TiO2NRs, the photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance. Under simulated sunlight, Pt2-TiO2-NRs@SiO2 achieved a photocatalytic efficiency of 55.47 mmol g-1h- 1 using methanol as the sacrificial agent and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.93 % at 350 nm, surpassing most previously reported TiO2-based catalysts. This superior activity is attributed to 1D NRs, along with the hollow structure that enhances light utilization through multiple scattering. The stability and high catalytic performance of these yolk-shell structures highlight the effectiveness of our design strategy in fabricating novel, highly active, and stable catalysts.

Abstract:Low power consumption and minimal potential hazards are ultimate goals for the modern development of chemical manufacturing; however, it often reduces the selectivity of chemical reactions by implementing a new reaction system. A nanocatalyst design is reported for achieving efficient and selective alkyne semihydrogenation through the photocatalytic hydrogen transfer from water, which avoids the use of a heat source and explosive H 2 . The PdPt catalytic sites that are implemented on the TiO 2 photocatalyst hold the key to achieving both high activity and selectivity. As compared with pure Pd or Pt, the alloy cocatalysts can better harness H diffusion/desorption for selective semihydrogenation as well as suppress competitive H 2 evolution. This work opens up new possibilities for green and selective alkyne semihydrogenation and highlights the importance of lattice engineering to catalytic selectivity.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are currently the most efficient anode catalysts in alcohol fuel cells. However, their widespread commercialization is hindered by their high cost. In this study, a straightforward method was employed to deposit Ni-Pt-Pd ternary alloy nanoparticles onto carboxyl-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and subsequently annealed the synthesized catalysts at different temperatures to adjust the surface composition and alloying degree. The Ni-Pt-Pd alloy exhibits a synergistic effect between Pt and Ni. The presence of Ni effectively modulates the d-band center of Pt, thereby enhancing the electrochemical performance of for alcohol oxidation. The synergistic effect of Pt-Pd alloy is harnessed to enhance both catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst for oxidation of methanol or ethanol. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that alloying Pt with Pd and Ni effectively reduced the Gibbs free energy during EOR and MOR reactions. The resulting catalysts, denoted as Ni 6 Pt 6 Pd 6 NPs/CNTs-M2, exhibited exceptional catalytic oxidation performance for both ethanol and methanol. Specifically, their electrochemical mass activity for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) reached 2345 mA mg -1 Pt+Pd , which was 15.5-fold and 2.56-fold higher than that of commercial Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts respectively. Moreover, their mass activity for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was measured at 2995 mA mg -1 Pt+Pd , which was 8.2-fold and 5.3-fold higher than that of Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts respectively.

Photodeposition and hydrogenation activity of Pt nanosites on the TiN support: Photo-assisted metal-support synergy

Abstract:The current appeal for sustainable chemistry urgently needs to develop a facile and green method for the synthesis of highly efficient catalysts. Herein, for the first time, a highly skilled catalyst was prepared by photodeposition (PD) of Pt nanosites on the titanium nitride (TiN) under the illumination of Xe lamp in a short period. The resulted Pt/TiN-pd had uniformly dispersed particle sizes (∼2.2 nm) and a high reduction degree, which exhibited high phenol conversion (641 mol/molPt h and cyclohexanone selectivity (∼82 %) under mild reaction conditions (50 °C and 0.5 MPa). Characterizations by the XRD, XPS, DRUV-vis, HRTEM, etc., have revealed the intensified metal-support synergy assisted by the photo-irradiation. It not only facilitated the close contact between Pt species and TiN support to constrain the metal sintering but also promoted their charge transfer as a result of the surface plasmon resonance effect. This simple strategy of photodeposition noble metals on TiN affords a time-saving and structure-tunable alternative to attain highly efficient catalysts for sustainable chemical transformation.

Abstract:2D Ni-Fe-MOF ultrathin nanosheets (NSs), with dimensions of ca. 1.0 μm and thickness of ca. 5.0 nm, were successfully fabricated. Small sized Pd nanoparticles of ca. 3 nm were deposited on 2D Ni-Fe-MOF NSs to afford Pd/Ni-Fe-MOF NSs, which were used as an efficient multifunctional catalyst to realize the N-alkylated reactions of amines by alcohols under visible light. The superior performance observed over the resultant Pd/Ni-Fe-MOF NSs as compared with Pd/bulk Ni-Fe-MOF, its 3D counterpart, can be ascribed to the ultrathin nanosheet morphology of 2D Ni-Fe-MOF NSs, which not only shortens the transportation path for the photogenerated charge carriers, but also can provide more efficient interaction between the active site and substrates. This work provides a green and sustainable strategy for the production of secondary amines using alcohols as the alkylated agent. This study also demonstrates the unique advantages of 2D MOF ultrathin nanosheets in the fabrication of multifunctional catalytic systems for light initiated one-pot tandem/cascade reactions.

Atomic-Level Asymmetric Tuning of the Co1-N3P1 Catalyst for Highly Efficient N-Alkylation of Amines with Alcohols.

Abstract:Despite the extensive development of non-noble metals for the N-alkylation of amines with alcohols, the exploitation of catalysts with high selectivity, activity, and stability still faces challenges. The controllable modification of single-atom sites through asymmetric coordination with a second heteroatom offers new opportunities for enhancing the intrinsic activity of transition metal single-atom catalysts. Here, we prepared the asymmetric N/P hybrid coordination of single-atom Co1-N3P1 by absorbing the Co-P complex on ZIF-8 using a concise impregnation-pyrolysis process. The catalyst exhibits ultrahigh activity and selectivity in the N-alkylation of aniline and benzyl alcohol, achieving a turnover number (TON) value of 3480 and a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 174-h. The TON value is 1 order of magnitude higher than the reported catalysts and even 37-fold higher than that of the homogeneous catalyst CoCl2(PPh3)2. Furthermore, the catalyst maintains its high activity and selectivity even after 6 cycles of usage. Controlling experiments and isotope labeling experiments confirm that in the asymmetric Co1-N3P1 system, the N-alkylation of aniline with benzyl alcohol proceeds via a transfer hydrogenation mechanism involving the monohydride route. Theoretical calculations prove that the superior activity of asymmetric Co1-N3P1 is attributed to the higher d-band energy level of Co sites, which leads to a more stable four-membered ring transition state and a lower reaction energy barrier compared to symmetrical Co1-N4.
f Pt nanoparticles supported on anatase TiO 2 nanotubes with good photo-electrocatalysis performance for methanol †

Abstract:A simple, high-yield and rinsing-free method is used in this work to prepare Pt nanoparticles with a size of approximately 2 nm, which are successfully supported on free-standing TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) synthesized by a simple two-step anodization method with titanium metal foil. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy images indicate that in the case of 30 V for 90 min, the inner diameter of as-synthesized TNTs is 60–70 nm and the length is approximately 1.9 mm. Electrochemical experimental results clarify that the Pt/TNTs/C catalyst has higher electrochemically active specific surface areas and better catalytic activity toward methanol electro-oxidation compared with the Pt/C and Pt/TNTs catalysts. What's more important, catalytic activity of Pt/TNTs/C is drastically enhanced under light illumination, with the mass activity of 525.0 mA mgPt , 1.47 times higher than that in the dark (357.4 mA mgPt ). The improved activity is mainly derived from the synergistic effects between the electro-catalysis on Pt nanoparticles and the photo-catalysis of TiO2 nanotubes. In this work, the improved photo-electrocatalysis performance of the Pt/TNTs/C catalyst is further analyzed and the findings here are of significance in providing a new strategy to fabricate Pt-based photo-electro catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction.
Promoted Electron Transfer and Surface Absorption by Single Nickel Atoms for Photocatalytic Cross-Coupling of Aromatic Alcohols and Aliphatic Amines under Visible Light

Abstract:The preparation of imines has drawn increasing attention as they are fundamental intermediates in the production of pharmaceuticals, agricultures, and fine chemicals. Nevertheless, current approaches for imines synthesis mainly focus on thermally driven reactions which always involve the consumption of high price noble metal catalysts, expensive ligands, strong base, and harsh reaction conditions. Herein, we demonstrate single atom nickel anchored on polymeric carbon nitride (Ni-SA@PCN) in Ni-N4 structure for visible light-promoted crossed coupling between aromatic alcohols and aliphatic amines. As expected, the Ni atoms dispersed carbon nitride demonstrates an obviously improved charge separation and transfer as reflected in UV-vis, fluorescence intensity and lifetime, photocurrent density, and electrochemical impedance characterizations. More impressively, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations also reveals that the presence of Ni atoms can dramatically accelerate the absorption of reactive substrates on the surface of PCN. The decreased absorption energy from -0.51 to -3.35 eV, associated with increased O═O bond length from 1.226 to 1.371 Å indicates a huge advantage of single Ni atom on oxygen activation. As a result, the obtained Ni-SA@PCN photocatalyst shows a prominent catalytic efficiency in imines formation with a reaction conversion of 73% and selectivity of >99%. Lastly, the photocatalytic reactions displays an excellent compatibility with various imines being achieved with high yield.

Abstract:A simple, high-yield and rinsing-free method is used in this work to prepare Pt nanoparticles with a size of approximately 2 nm, which are successfully supported on free-standing TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) synthesized by a simple two-step anodization method with titanium metal foil. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy images indicate that in the case of 30 V for 90 min, the inner diameter of as-synthesized TNTs is 60-70 nm and the length is approximately 1.9 mm. Electrochemical experimental results clarify that the Pt/TNTs/C catalyst has higher electrochemically active specific surface areas and better catalytic activity toward methanol electro-oxidation compared with the Pt/C and Pt/TNTs catalysts. What's more important, catalytic activity of Pt/TNTs/C is drastically enhanced under light illumination, with the mass activity of 525.0 mA mgPt(-1), 1.47 times higher than that in the dark (357.4 mA mgPt(-1)). The improved activity is mainly derived from the synergistic effects between the electro-catalysis on Pt nanoparticles and the photo-catalysis of TiO2 nanotubes. In this work, the improved photo-electrocatalysis performance of the Pt/TNTs/C catalyst is further analyzed and the findings here are of significance in providing a new strategy to fabricate Pt-based photo-electro catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction.
Shape-dependent catalytic properties of electrochemically synthesized PdPt nanoparticles towards alcohols electrooxidation

Abstract:Tuning the composition and structure of alloys is significantly important to unveil their relationship between structure and functions, and thus help to design catalysts with high performance. In this work, PdPt octahedral and concave cubic nanoparticles (OH-PdPt NPs and CC-PdPt NPs) were synthesized firstly by developed electrochemical methods. EDS and XPS studies revealed that the as-synthesized PdPt NPs have similar composition both in bulk and surface. The alloy nanoparticles show surface structure dependent enhanced activity and stability for methanol, ethanol and glycerol electrooxidations (MOR, EOR and GOR). The {hk0} high-index facets enclosed CC-PdPt NPs show higher activity towards MOR and EOR which is 7.0-fold and 3.4-fold respectively higher than commercial Pt/C. However, {111} low-index facets enclosed OH-PdPt NPs show superior activity towards GOR, which is 4.5-fold higher than commercial Pt/C. The selective enhancing catalytic ability of PdPt NPs towards different alcohol electrooxidations could be attributed to the synergetic effect and modified electronic structure of Pd and Pt, as well as the important effects of surface atomic configuration. DFT calculations suggest that the higher activity of methanol and ethanol oxidation on high-index {hk0} facets is due to the faster decomposition process and lower oxidation barrier on the step sites. Nevertheless, the strong adsorption of COCHOHCO* on step sites leading to a much higher oxidation barrier, indicating the step sites of {hk0} facets are not beneficial for glycerol oxidation.

Abstract:Tailoring the electronic structure of Pt-based catalysts can effectively facilitate their methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Despite a great deal of effort, the fabrication of Pt-based catalysts with both tunable electronic structure and well-dispersion is still challenging. Herein, the PtNi alloy nanoparticles supported on poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PtNi/PEDOT-MWCNTs) was prepared for MOR. Transmission electron microscopy reveals the successful synthesis of PtNi nanoparticles (3.5 nm) by the reduction of H 2 . The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the strong electronic interaction between Ni and Pt, and the electronic environment of Pt atoms can be tailored by alloying different atomic content of Ni. Thus, the obtained PtNi/PEDOT-MWCNTs was suitable to design an effective electro-catalyst. As revealed through the electrochemical measurements, the fabricated PtNi/PEDOT-MWCNTs catalyst displayed higher peak current density, better stability, and excellent CO-tolerance than those of Pt nanoparticles dispersed on PEDOT-MWCNTs, MWCNTs, and commercial carbon black. The surface/interface engineering tactic highlights the tailoring of the electronic structure of Pt-based catalysts, which can be applied in various fields, including methanol fuel cells and other catalytic reactions.
