Abstract:The instability of rock slopes and underground engineering structures is usually caused by shear sliding along discontinuities, such as joints or faults, which are usually non-persistent. It is important to study the shear failure behavior of non-persistent joints to better understand the instability mechanism of jointed rock masses. In this research, rock-like samples containing multiple non-persistent joints were prepared and used for direct shear tests under constant normal load. The test results showed that the shear failure of multiple non-persistent joints usually involves multiple coalescence modes of rock bridges, which are affected by joint configurations and normal stress. Under the same normal stress, the shear strength, and dilation behavior are mostly dominated by joint persistency, which essentially determines the roughness of the macroshear fracture surface. Furthermore, the acoustic emission characteristics of non-persistent joints were evaluated by the hit rate, energy rate, and <i>b</i> value. A lower <i>b</i> value, indicating a more intense shear failure, is usually related to a smaller joint persistency and medium joint spacing. Finally, the cracking process, force evolution, and micro-cracking mechanism of multiple non-persistent joints were revealed using particle flow code.

Abstract:The complex response of underground geomaterials subjected to dynamic disturbance arises from the microstructure redistribution under high in- situ stress and the resulting fracture behaviors at multiaxial stress states. Inclined specimens were employed in an axially constrained split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system to achieve a combination of compression-shear stress states and static-dynamic loads. The loading rate under investigation ranged from 500 to 4,000 GPa/s, along with the axial prestress of 7, 21, 35, 49, and 63 MPa on specimens with an inclination of 0°, 3°, 5°, and 7°. The modified SHPB experimentation and discrete-element method modeling were implemented to unravel the combined effects of the loading rate, preload, and stress path on the failure mechanism of sandstone specimens involving the failure strength and envelope, fracturing pattern, fragmentation, and microcracking process. The positive rate dependence of the failure strength and Drucker–Prager envelope was observed. The preload showed double effects on the failure strength, indicated by an upper bound of the failure envelope as it expanded with the increasing preload. The microdamage accumulated during preloading and the global stress field collectively influenced the failure pattern of the inclined specimen, altering from a shear fracturing mode under dynamic loading or high-preload static-dynamic loading to an axial splitting mode near the specimen surface under low-preload static-dynamic loading.

Abstract:The compression-shear behavior and failure mechanism of rocks under combined static-dynamic loading are of essential importance for mechanical characterization and construction safety in deep underground engineering applications. An inclined cylinder specimen is designed using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus modified with an axial pressure chamber for laboratory studies. Specific issues on the validity of this compression-shear specimen that were not addressed previously have been numerically assessed involving the dynamic equilibrium of force and moment, stress uniformity, and interfacial friction effects. Experiments are conducted at different loading rates ranging from 500 to 4000 GPa/s and under axial pressures of 7, 21, 35, 49, and 63 MPa. Experimental results verify the dynamic equilibrium of inclined specimens in the axially constrained SHPB tests using pulse shaping techniques, which validates the data processing method newly proposed. Both the dynamic strength and total strength linearly increase with the loading rate. With the increasing pre-load ratio (ratio of the axial confining load to the unconfined compression strength of the tested material), the dynamic strength decreases, while the total strength increases and then keeps constant, where the turning point of the pre-load ratio approximates 0.7. High-speed photographs at a high loading rate illustrate that the increasing confinement can result in less shear but more tensile cracks. Particularly at a high confining condition, the inclined specimen fails by a feather-like shear fracture band where tensile secondary cracks extensively develop. The equivalent stress-strain relationships indicate the reinforcing effect of the confinement on the deformation and energy dissipation.
Study of Stress Characteristics of Brittle Failures of Rock Around Underground Openings

Abstract:Under high stresses, rock bursts, borehole breakouts and spalling are all common phenomena which occur around the underground openings. In substance, these three phenomena all belong to brittle failures of intact rock mass; but they reflect different failure extents of intact rock mass under the action of high stresses. After analyzing and comparing the stress-strength criteria for rock bursts, borehole breakouts and spalling put forward by other specialists, we find that these brittle failure phenomena share the same stress requirement. The stress requirements for brittle failures can be defined with the ratio of the maximum tangential stress around an underground opening to the uniaxial compressive strength (sigma(theta max)/sigma(ci)) or the ratio of the maximum principal stress to the uniaxial compressive strength (sigma(1)/sigma(ci)); actually, both indices reflect the same stress requirements. For sigma(theta max)/sigma(ci), the ratio of 0.4 +/- 0.1 should be the critical stress requirement, but for sigma(1)/sigma(ci), the ratio of 0.15 +/- 0.05 should be the critical stress requirement. Large amounts of engineering cases and the mechanical analysis based on the Hoek-Brown criterion also prove the validity of these two stress requirements. Here, the two stress requirements reflect a ratio range because the complicated rock mass ratings, lithology and geotechnical conditions shall have profound impacts on the stress requirement for brittle failures.
Dynamic Behavior and Response of Rock and Underground Openings Subjected to High Initial Stresses

Abstract:The FEM and continuous damage mechanics-based numerical code RFPA is selected as the research tool. First of all, from the view of laboratory scale, numerical SHPB (split Hopkinson pressure bar) system is established to investigate the dynamic behavior of rocks under in-situ stresses. The derived results show that the dynamic compressive strength of rock increases with the increasing depth and parameter K which is defined as the ratio of horizontal stress to vertical one. Subsequently, from the view of rock engineering scale, dynamic response of underground openings under plane and cylindrical wave disturbances are numerically investigated. In the numerical model, the properties and distribution of rock joints are fully taken into consideration. The simulated results indicate that the additional attenuation of cylindrical waves occurs as the propagation distance increases in addition to the wave attenuation caused by rock and joint damage and wave reflection and transmission along joint surfaces. Moreover, it is found that the properties and distribution of joints directly determine the wave reflection and transmission along joint surfaces, which will further influence the damage degree and PPV (peak particle velocity) results of the underground openings.

Abstract:Deep mine rock mass is in high static stress and dynamic disturbance coupling conditions, its mechanical properties and failure mode is different from the shallow rock mass, which leads to low rock blasting efficiency and engineering geology hazards. In-depth research on the dynamic response of rock blasting under in-situ stress will help to optimize the blasting design, improve the blasting efficiency and safety of blasting operations, and provide theoretical support for rock blasting in deep mines. In this study, the blasting experiment was conducted on granite specimens under different biaxial static stress conditions. Meanwhile, the dynamic response of rock blasting was monitored, collected, and analyzed using a high-speed digital image correlation (DIC) measurement system, a strain wave acquisition system, and an acoustic emission (AE) system. The results show that small and medium pre-static loads inhibit blast crack propagation, at which time the cumulative AE hits from dynamic loads (CAECd) are more than those from pre-static loads (CAECs), but large pre-static loads promote crack propagation, at which time CAECs are more than CAECd. Secondly, as pre-static load increases, the specimen's maximum strain (epsilon max) decreases first and then increases, but as lateral pressure coefficient (K) increases, the epsilon max in the direction of lower static stress decreases gradually and the epsilon max in the direction of higher static stress remains constant. In addition, the confining pressure magnitude and K affect the area and shape of the failure zone of the specimen, as well as the size and propagation direction of the radial crack. Especially when the confining pressure is high, the specimen will undergo shear failure, and the smaller K is the more serious the shear failure. Finally, the failure criterion of rock under dynamic-static coupling conditions is proposed based on the energy index, and different failure types of rock are discussed.

Abstract:Rock burst is one of the most sophisticated and threatening problems in the process of mining activities of underground coal mines, which can evolve into phenomena such as gas outburst, violent ground pressure behavior of surrounding rock of stope roadway, and high dynamic load energy event of roof overburden fracture through the interaction between various influencing factors. This paper deeply studies the causes, consequences, and disaster mechanism of "2–2 rock burst accident" in Xinjulong coal mine, gives the network diagram of the relationship between the main influencing factors of fault type rock burst and high-energy events, establishes a mechanical model on this basis, and explores the influence and evolution law of fault influencing factors on the elastic strain energy field of surrounding rock of stope roadway.

Abstract:To analyze and predict the mechanical behaviors of deep hard rocks, some key issues concerning rock fracturing mechanics for deep hard rock excavations are discussed. First, a series of apparatuses and methods have been developed to test the mechanical properties and fracturing behaviors of hard rocks under high true triaxial stress paths. Evolution mechanisms of stress-induced disasters in deep hard rock excavations, such as spalling, deep cracking, massive roof collapse, large deformation and rockbursts, have been recognized. The analytical theory for the fracturing process of hard rock masses, including the three-dimensional failure criterion, stress-induced mechanical model, fracturing degree index, energy release index and numerical method, has been established. The cracking-restraint method is developed for mitigating or controlling rock spalling, deep cracking and massive collapse of deep hard rocks. An energy-controlled method is also proposed for the prevention of rockbursts. Finally, two typical cases are used to illustrate the application of the proposed methodology in the Baihetan caverns and Bayu tunnels of China.

Abstract:With an increase in mining depth, rockburst is becoming an important problem in roadways of Linglong gold mine, where the overburden is up to 1000 m. Field observations indicate that rock failures are often triggered by blasting at the adjacent workface. In order to understand the rockburst mechanism, numerical investigation associated with an energy index, strain energy density (SED), is conducted to simulate the energy accumulation and dissipation characteristics of the failure process. The results show that rock failure follows different mechanisms under dynamic loading as a result of unloading and loading zones generated around the cavity. Numerical modelling demonstrates that strain burst occurs at the corner and the floor with the release of massive energy, while dynamic spalling occurs at the lower sidewall due to the reflected tensile stress wave at the free surface. The failure types and damage extend from simulated results agree well with field observations. The findings presented in this study will contribute to effective support design strategies in deep underground openings.

Abstract:Coal rock is naturally comprised of a large number of randomly-distributed discontinuities such as joints / cracks and weak interlayers. The geometry,size,distribution,contact and infillings of the discontinuities essentially govern the physical / mechanical properties and failure mechanism of coal rock. It is intractable to theoretically and accurately characterize the discontinuities and the governing influences on the deformation and failure of coal rock. This paper presented a 3D finite element model of fractured coal rock representing the irregular geometry,complex contact, intersection,and network features of interior joints and cracks by means of high-resolution CT techniques and 3D reconstruction methods. The birth-death element algorithm was employed to characterize and visualize the stress field distribution,spatial distribution of failed areas,energy dissipation and release during the deformation and failure of fractured coal rock when subjected to the varied unloaded conditions. The analysis discloses the determinative influences of the unloading paths and the properties of joints and cracks on the macro mechanical behavior and the failure mecha-nism of fractured coal rock. The paper presents a promising way to identify and characterize the governing effect of unloading due to deep excavation on real fractured coal rock.
Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Rock Failure Process under Hydromechanical Coupling Action

Abstract:In order to study the initiation mechanism of rocks under hydromechanical coupling, hydromechanical coupling triaxial tests and acoustic emission tests were carried out on basalt in the Xiluodu hydropower station dam site area in southwestern China. The test results indicate that the basalt displays typical hard brittle behavior, and its peak strength increases as confining pressure rises. Conversely, the peak strength decreases gradually as the initial water pressure increases, which leads to decreased hardness. Meanwhile, tensile failure is the main crack initiation mode under hydromechanical coupling action. During the stable crack growth stage, tensile failure is predominant, complemented by shear failure, with failures mainly occurring in the rock middle position. Contrary to this, during the unstable stage, the rock failure is mainly due to shear failure. The critical pore water pressure failure criterion of rock crack initiation under hydromechanical coupling conditions is derived based on the test results and introduced into the numerical simulation. The hydromechanical coupling failure process and pore water pressure distribution law of basalt are analyzed, and the rationality of the critical pore water pressure failure criterion is verified. These findings are significant for understanding the rock failure process under hydromechanical coupling action and provide a valuable reference for future research.

Numerical Study On Zonal Disintegration Of Rock Mass Around Deep Underground Openings

Abstract:With mining activity developing to deeper area, a failure mode called zonal disintegration (ZD) has been found. That is, after excavation, there were some alternating regions of fracture zones and relatively intact zones around or in front of the working face, which is quite different from the traditional understanding of rock failure mode. A three dimensional numerical model is applied to simulate the zonal disintegration phenomenon. Results of numerical simulation show that a higher compressive stress along axial direction of the openings does cause the occurrence of ZD phenomenon, but only under a certain boundary condition. The fracture rings are neither closed rings nor continuous one both in the radial and axial direction. The propagation of ZD is in a spiral way around openings. Most of the fracture zones occur in the area of brittle rock mass with high strength and high elastic modulus. For parallel closed-spaced openings, in the vicinity of openings, the fracture rings enclose each opening separately; with the increasing of distance from the opening periphery, the fracture rings enclose the two openings. The distance between each two fracture rings and the number of fracture rings have close relation with the heterogeneity of the rock mass.
New Criterion for the Spalling Failure of Deep Rock Engineering Based on Energy Release

Abstract:Ground pressure hazards in deep rock engineering, such as rock spalling and rock burst, are big challenges and threats to personnel and equipment safety. In order to investigate the mechanism of ground pressure disasters in deep rock engineering, in-situ investigations were carried out in a deep gold mine in China. The survey results show that with the increase of the mining depth, the number and severity of ground pressure disaster events increase significantly. The investigation results of ground pressure disaster in the gold mine are analyzed by three methods. The effects of the maximum tangential stress, strain rebound and strain energy release on the failure of surrounding rock under different burial depths are obtained. The failure behaviors of surrounding rock are well explained by these methods at different mining depths. The new method considering strain energy release can well explain the phenomenon of core disking and it can accurately calculate the theoretical thickness of core disk. In addition, a theoretical calculation basis for the support design of energy absorbing bolt is provided in the paper and the support design figure is put forward by considering energy absorbing bolt.

Abstract:The bearing capacity of rock sample is determined by material strength and confining pressure together. Both axial compression and unloading confining pressure can induce the failure of rock sample, but because of different stress paths, the failure processes under two conditions are different. The tests of conventional triaxial, pre-peak unloading confining pressure and post-peak unloading confining pressure are done to the Baishan marble which comes from access tunnel in Jinping Hydropower Station lying on Yalong River. The test curve and the rock sample failure characteristics indicate that rock samples are all showing brittle failure in pre-peak and post-peak unloading confining pressure tests; and the brittle characteristics in pre-peak test is more stronger than that in post-peak test. The deformations of rock sample in loading and unloading are increasing with the increase of principal stress difference; but dilatancy in unloading is bigger than that in loading under the same principal stress difference. Rock sample fails as confining pressure unloaded to about 60 % of initial confining pressure in pre-peak unloading confining pressure test; and as confining pressure unloaded to about 80 % of initial confining pressure in post-peak unloading confining pressure test, it fails. The conclusion can be for reference in internal correlative engineering stability analysis, design and construction.
A Numerical Study of Brittle Failure in Rocks with Distinct Microcrack Characteristics

Abstract:A numerical model is presented to reproduce the stress induced fracturing process of brittle rocks. Material heterogeneity at the zone level of the model is considered, and distinct initial microcrack lengths and orientations are also included. The rock material is prescribed with a Weibull distribution, and the microcrack lengths and orientations are defined by distinct distribution functions. Stress intensity factor approach is adopted to characterize the stress condition of the microcracks, and is used as a failure criterion for the zones of the model. The mechanical response of rock specimens is investigated on models under different external loading conditions. Obvious nonlinear characteristics before the peak strength can be observed in models under uniaxial compression. Consistency can be found between simulation results and lab test data. The influence of microcrack conditions and heterogeneity levels on the simulation result is also investigated. The macroscopic failure modes of models are studied with different distributions of initial microcracks, and correlations are found between the microcrack conditions and fracturing processes. Especially, scattered zones and obscure fracture patterns are produced in the model defined by exponential and uniform distribution, compared with clear shapes of macroscopic fractures observed in models defined by normal or lognormal distributions. The simulations also show that the differences in the mean value of microcrack orientations obeying certain distribution result in distinct macroscopic fracture patterns, from shear bands at lower mean orientations to tensile fractures at higher mean orientations. Typical fracture patterns observed in laboratory are successfully reproduced in the model, which demonstrates the capability of the model in reproducing faithful rock behaviors through prescribing specific microscopic characteristics.

Abstract:Rock failure phenomena, such as rockburst, slabbing (or spalling) and zonal disintegration, related to deep underground excavation of hard rocks are frequently reported and pose a great threat to deep mining. Currently, the explanation for these failure phenomena using existing dynamic or static rock mechanics theory is not straightforward. In this study, new theory and testing method for deep underground rock mass under coupled static-dynamic loading are introduced. Two types of coupled loading modes, i.e. “critical static stress + slight disturbance” and “elastic static stress + impact disturbance”, are proposed, and associated test devices are developed. Rockburst phenomena of hard rocks under coupled static-dynamic loading are successfully reproduced in the laboratory, and the rockburst mechanism and related criteria are demonstrated. The results of true triaxial unloading compression tests on granite and red sandstone indicate that the unloading can induce slabbing when the confining pressure exceeds a certain threshold, and the slabbing failure strength is lower than the shear failure strength according to the conventional Mohr-Column criterion. Numerical results indicate that the rock unloading failure response under different in situ stresses and unloading rates can be characterized by an equivalent strain energy density. In addition, we present a new microseismic source location method without premeasuring the sound wave velocity in rock mass, which can efficiently and accurately locate the rock failure in hard rock mines. Also, a new idea for deep hard rock mining using a non-explosive continuous mining method is briefly introduced.

Abstract:For the sake of bringing to light the mechanism of the zonal disintegration,we study distortion characteristic of similar material hole room by the high stress load,and research the influence of the axial load,the supports protections and the test sample length aspects.The result indicates,the zonal disintegration phenomenon is observed in this simulated test;the zonal disintegration is affected by the material character,and the zonal disintegration is easy to emerge;in the brittleness material,the distortion degree is related to the supports and protections,the space of fracture is reduced under the condition of support;the zonal disintegration is not affected by sample length.The result has important guiding sense to the deep highstress rock mass engineering.
Dynamic and Coupled Static-Dynamic Loading Theory and Method in Deep Hard Rock Mining

Abstract:Deep hard rock is in the state of high in situ stresses and subjected to dynamic disturbances during excavation. Thus, the surrounding rock is subjected to coupled static and dynamic loading conditions at depth, leading to unconventional rock failure phenomena, such as rockburst, slabbing and zonal disintegration, which are frequently reported and pose great threats to deep mining. In order to study the rock characteristics under coupled static and dynamic loading, a new method for testing the rock dynamic behaviour under medium to high strain rates is introduced in this study. A new theory and testing method for deep underground rock mass under coupled static-dynamic loads are proposed. Two types of experimental apparatus for coupled static and dynamic loads are constructed, which are a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar and a tri-axial testing apparatus, respectively. A series of experiments involving static-dynamic loads were conducted based on the two experimental setups. Rockburst phenomena of hard rock under coupled static-dynamic loads were successfully generated in the laboratory. The results of the true tri-axial unloading compression tests on granite and red sandstone specimens indicate that the unloading can induce slabbing when the confining pressure exceeds a certain level and the slabbing failure strength is lower than the shear failure strength according to the conventional Mohr-Column criterion. In addition, a new idea of non-explosive continuous mining method for deep hard rock mining is briefly introduced in the paper.
