Abstract:Iridium-based metallization complexes constitute the preferred phosphor materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study, we examine the influence of ligands with different N-substitution modes and heavy atom effects on transition metal complexes. Our findings offer valuable insights into the properties of these complexes, facilitating the design and optimization of materials with desired characteristics. By employing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, we investigate the thermal vibration correlation function rate theory for Ir(III) tri-dentate ligand complexes that possess exceptional phosphorescence efficiency and broad application prospects. We draw three main conclusions from our investigations. Firstly, substituting 9-N-phenyl and 10-2N-phenyl in the iridium complex Ir(ppy)3 reduces spin-orbit coupling (SOC), resulting in decreased non-radiative rate constants compared to Ir(ppy)3. Conversely, substituting 10-N-phenyl and 11-N-phenyl enhances SOC, leading to varying degrees of increased non-radiative rate constants. Among these, substituting 11-N-phenyl exhibits the highest non-radiative rate constant. Secondly, for the ligand pyridine ring of Ir(ppy)3, 1,3-2N-substitution reduces reorganization energy while slightly increasing SOC. Moreover, the energy barrier through the non-radiative path of the metal-centered (MC) state significantly increases. Consequently, the non-radiative decay rate decreases by a factor of 3.1, outperforming other schemes. Notably, 1,2-2N-substitution substantially raises the reorganization energy (by 2.1 times) and SOC, resulting in a five-order increase in the non-radiative decay rate. Therefore, adjacent N-substitutions should be avoided. Thirdly, the crucial activation barriers for the thermal non-radiative deactivation process in compound 3 and compound 4 are determined to be 12.61 and 26.04 kcal/mol, respectively. Compound 4 exhibits the highest non-radiative rate constant (9.68E+12), demonstrating that Br substitution on the pyridine of Ir(ppy)3 significantly enhances the non-radiative rate constant. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the rational design of efficient fluorescent materials based on transition organometallic complexes.

Abstract:The iridium(III) complex Ir(ppy)2(phen5f) [ppy = 2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2′, and phen5f = 4,4,5,5,5-pentafluoro-1-(1′,10′-phenanthrolin-2′-yl)-pentane-1,3-dionate] has been synthesised and used as “complex ligands” to make heteronuclear d–f complexes by the attachment of Ln(NO3)3·xH2O at the vacant coordination sites in the bridging ligand phen5f. The microanalyses and crystal structure characteristics confirmed the formation of the heteronuclear Ir2Ln arrays. The measurement of the lowest triplet state energy level of Ir(ppy)2(phen5f) indicates that it is suitable for the NIR (near-infrared) lanthanide ions, NdIII, YbIIIand ErIII. Upon irradiation of the MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) absorption of Ir(ppy)2(phen5f) at an excitation wavelength from 380–490 nm, the characteristic emission spectra of the three Ir2Ln arrays (Ln = Nd, Yb, Er) in both the solid state and in CH3CN solution were measured. According to the results, more IrIII complexes will be designed for lanthanide NIR emission by the proper combination between the cyclometalated ligand and the tetradentate ancillary ligand.

Abstract:We reported a theoretical study on [(NCN)Ir(iii)(NNC)]+ tridentate Ir(iii) complexes for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications. With appropriate chemical modifications onto the NCN ligand of [(NCN)Ir(iii)(NNC)]+, several rotational and stretching vibration modes were weakened or even eliminated, resulting in a weaker vibrational coupling between the emissive state and the ground state, therefore slowing down the non-radiative decay process, ultimately improving the quantum efficiency. We hope that these theoretical studies and the semi-quantitative prediction on phosphorescence efficiency could provide inspiration for the design of highly efficient phosphorescent materials.
A Large Perturbation on Geometry Structures, Excited State Properties, Charge-Injection and -Transporting Abilities of Ir(III) Complexes by Different Substituents on Ligands: a DFT/TDDFT Study.

Abstract:The molecular geometries, electronic structures, photophysical properties, charge-injection and -transporting abilities of a series of Ir(III) complexes with different carrier-transporting substituents, such as carbazole, oxadiazole and dimesitylboryl groups, are investigated theoretically using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations to understand the influence of these substituents on the optical and electronic properties of Ir(III) complexes and to explore how to improve the optoelectronic properties of the complexes. It is found that the introduction of substituents can stabilize both HOMOs and LUMOs and induce variations in the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO. The introduction of hole-transporting carbazole substituent induces the blue-shift of absorption spectrum and improves the hole-injection and -transporting performances of complex. The introduction of electron-transporting oxadiazole substituent and electron-accepting dimesitylboryl substituent induces the red-shift in absorption spectra of complexes, improves their charge transfer abilities and leads to the better balance between the hole- and electron-transporting abilities. Through Lewis acid/base interactions between B atom and F(-), the electronic properties of 4 show dramatic changes in the presence of F(-) and thus 4 can also be used as selective phosphorescent F(-) probe.

Abstract:Detailed information on the An(iii)/Ln(iii) complexation properties in solution is essential for separation chemistry and the prediction of their potential for radionuclide migration from nuclear waste repositories into natural aquifers. In the present study, to better reveal and confirm the structural information of [Eu(Ox)x (H2O)h-2x]3-2x (h = 8, 9; x = 0-3) aqueous species, especially the variable coordination number (CN), and explore the validity of the spectral linear correlation between the luminescence lifetime and the residual hydration number in the first coordination sphere of Eu(iii) compounds in solution, a comparison between the spectral results and the theoretical calculations in a wide parametric space in terms of the pH value and oxalate concentration was carried out by combining time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy (TRLS) with speciation modelling and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found direct and clear evidence for the 9-fold to 8-fold coordination number reduction of Eu(iii) atoms upon coordination with more than one oxalate in an aqueous medium, and as well systematically validated the applicability of the spectral linear correlation in an aqueous system (otherwise solid state) involving multiple species with the support of relatively reliable and clear speciation modelling.

Abstract:A series of (NN)-N-boolean AND,(OO)-O-boolean AND-bridging ligands based on substituted 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone and their corresponding heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes as well as Ir-Eu bimetallic complexes were synthesized and fully characterized. The influence of the triplet energy levels of the bridging ligands on the energy transfer (ET) process from the Ir(III) complexes to Eu(III) ions in solution was investigated at 77 K in Ir(III)/Eu(III) dyads. Photophysical experiment results show the bridging ligands play an important role in the ET process. Only when the triplet energy level of the bridging ligand was lower than the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer ((MLCT)-M-3) energy level of the Ir moiety, was pure emission from the Eu(III) ion observed, implying complete ET took place from the Ir moiety to the Eu(III) ion.
Ligand-Mediated Photophysics Adjustability in Bis-tridentate Ir(III) Complexes and Their Application in Efficient Optical Limiting Materials.

Abstract:A family of novel bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes (Ir1-Ir5) incorporating both functional N∧C∧N-type ligands (L1-L5) and N∧N∧C-type ligand (L0) were synthesized attentively and characterized scientifically. The crystalline structures of Ir1, Ir3 and Ir4 were resoundingly confirmed by XRD. With the aid of experimental and theoretical methods, their photophysical properties at transient and steady states were scientifically investigated. The broadband charge-transfer absorption for these aforementioned Ir(III) complexes is up to 600 nm as shown in the UV-visible absorption spectrum. The emission lifetimes of their excited states are good. Between the visible and near-infrared regions, Ir1-Ir5 possessed powerful excited-state absorption. Hence, a remarkably robust reverse saturable absorption (RSA) process can occur once the complexes are irradiated by a 532 nm laser. The RSA effect follows the descending order: Ir3 > Ir5 > Ir4 ≈ Ir1 > Ir2. To sum up, modifying electron-donating units (-OCH3) and large π-conjugated units to the pyridyl N∧C∧N-type ligands is a systematic way to markedly raise the RSA effect. Therefore, these octahedral bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes are potentially state-of-the-art optical limiting (OPL) materials.

Abstract:A novel series of neutral iridium complexes (Ir1-Ir3) bearing salicylaldimine ligands with dibenzosuberane core was synthesized and well characterized through elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of Ir2 and Ir3 were determined by single-crystal XRD analysis and thus revealed that distorted-octahedral geometry was found around the metal center. Photophysical and electrochemical properties of the complexes (Ir1-Ir3) have been comprehensively investigated. Ir1-Ir3 exhibits the blue-shifted emission in solution (lambda max 383-393 nm) in comparison with their solid-state emission (lambda max 594-599 nm). Ir1-Ir3 are stable in the air up to 380 degrees C, as established over thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to provide some insight into the electronic structures of Ir1-Ir3. Furthermore, Ir1-Ir3 exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties when hexane was added to dichloromethane solutions of Ir1-Ir3. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of aggregated species of Ir1-Ir3 (PLQYs = 10-27%) are effectively increased in comparison to those in pure dichloromethane solutions. Abstract:<p>The rational modulation of the nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) of nonconventional luminophores remains difficult, on account of the limited understanding on the structure–property relationships and emission mechanisms. Herein, the effective modulation of NTIL is demonstrated based on a group of nonaromatic anhydrides and imides. Mutual bridging of isolated subgroups effectively promotes intramolecular through‐space conjugation (TSC), leading to red‐shifted emission, enhanced efficiency, and prolonged persistent room‐temperature phosphorescence (p‐RTP). The substitution of heteroatoms from oxygen to nitrogen drastically changes the TSC and enhances intermolecular interactions, resulting in enhanced emission efficiency. In addition, upon freezing, compression, or embedding into polymer matrices, the emission intensity and color remain well regulated. These results shed new light on the rational modulation of the NTIL and p‐RTP of nonconventional luminophores.</p>

Abstract:A (N boolean AND O)(N boolean AND O) bridging ligand, 5-bromopyrimidine-2-carboxylic acid (bpmc), was used for connecting Ir and Ln(III) centers to construct the series of d-f bimetallic complexes Ir(pdt)(2)(mu-bpmc)Ln(TTA)(3), where pdt = 1,3-dimethyl-5-phenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazole, TTA = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl)-butane-1,3-dionate, and Ln = Nd, Yb, Er, Gd. Crystallographic analyses reveal that there are very short spatial distances between the d-f centers (about 6 angstrom), and photophysical studies demonstrate the appropriate energy level of the Ir-III chromophore for sensitization of near-infrared (NIR) lanthanide ions, both of which are two important factors for efficient Ir-III -> Ln(III) energy transfer. The energy transfer rates for Ir-III-Nd-III, Ir-III-Yb-III, and Ir-III-Er-III are calculated to be 3.6 x 10(9), 2.8 x 10(8), and 4.0 x 10(8) s(-1), respectively.

Abstract:Cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes [Ir(dfppy)2(qbiH)](PF6) (1), [Ir(dfppy)2(qbim)](PF6)·H2O (2), [Ir(dfppy)2(qbio)](PF6) (3) and [Ir(dfppy)2(qbi)] (4) have been designed and prepared, in which the N^N ligands qbiH, qbim and qbio incorporate different substituent groups R on their imidazole units (H atom, CH3 group and n-C8H17 group, respectively) in order to explore the influence of the substituent groups R and the protonation/deprotonation state of imidazole units in these Ir(iii) complexes on their structures and luminescence behaviors. Crystal structures indicate that an {Ir(dfppy)2}+ unit is coordinated by neutral ligands qbiH in 1, qbim in 2 and qbio in 3, while a qbi- anion in 4. These Ir(iii) complexes show clearly different molecular stacking modes. In compound 1, neighboring [Ir(dfppy)2(qbiH)]+ cations are linked into a supramolecular chain through ππ stacking interactions between adjacent dfppy-/qbiH ligands. In 2 and 4, two neighboring iridium complex units connect each other through ππ stacking interactions between dfppy- ligands in the former, while between qbi- ligands in the latter, forming supramolecular dimers. Compared to 1, 2 and 4, compound 3 only exhibits intermolecular van der Waals interactions. At room temperature, these Ir(iii) complexes in CH2Cl2 reveal phosphorescence with a mixing of 3MLCT and 3LC characters, emissions at 558 and 585 nm for 1, 572 (or 573) and 600 nm for 2 and 3, and 546 nm for 4. Compared to 1-3, compound 4 displays relatively weak luminescence intensity. Interestingly, upon addition of NEt3/TFA, both 1 and 4 in CH2Cl2 can switch their luminescence between strong emission at 558 nm and weak emission at 546 nm, due to their acid-/base-induced structural interconversion between the protonation state and the deprotonation state of the qbiH ligand. The emissions of 1-4 in the solid state reveal different degrees of the red shift compared to their corresponding emissions in CH2Cl2, the broad emission bands at 542, 572 and 611 nm for 1, 553, 581 and 612 nm for 2, 544, 578 and 630 nm for 3, and 595 and 633 nm for 4. Based on the crystal structures of 1-4, this work discusses the luminescence modulation of these Ir(iii) complexes by varying their substituent groups or the protonation/deprotonation state of the imidazole units.

Abstract:The ability to tune the emission energy of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes through ligand modification is well understood. Changing the electronic profile of functional groups affords complexes that exhibit emission spanning the visible spectrum, but the regiochemistry of substitution, and its effect on photophysical properties beyond emission energy, remains less explored. In this paper we investigate the substitution pattern of an electron-donating (-OCH 3 ) and electron-withdrawing (-CF 3 ) functional group around the phenyl-ring of 2-phenylpyridine cyclometalating ligands. A family of heteroleptic [Ir(C ∧ N) 2 (phen)]PF 6 complexes, containing C ∧ N as the cyclometalating and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as the ancillary ligand, were synthesized and characterized using a range of experimental and theoretical techniques. Optical spectroscopy revealed that iridium(III) complex photophysics were most significantly affected when substitution occurred at the 5 phenyl-ring position, para relative to the orthometalated carbon atom. Subtle differences were also observed when substitution occurred at either the 4 or the 6 phenyl-ring position, despite substitution at either site being meta relative to the organometallic bond. Abstract:On the basis of the thiophene-containing and furan-containing complexes, we design four complexes by introducing thiazole, isothiazole, oxazole, isoxazole on main ligands. The electronic structure, absorption and emission spectra, charge injection/transport properties, absorption and phosphorescence properties have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Introducing S atom to substitute O atom could enhance HOMO energy level, blueshift emission wavelength, decrease ΔES1- T1 value. The introduction of N atom on furan ring and thiophene ring could decrease HOMO and LUMO energy levels and energy gaps, blueshift emission wavelength, decrease ΔES1- T1 value, enhance electron transport ability. Introducing thiazole could decrease hole injection ability and ΔES1- T1 , and then may have higher Φ PL . Isoxazole and isothiazole groups could facilitate the electron transition from HOMO to LUMO and enhance hole injection ability. Thiazole and isothiazole groups could increase absorption peak strength and hole transport ability.

Abstract:A series of Ir(III) complexes with N–heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) ligands (1–3) were synthesized and characterized. The opto-electrical properties of these complexes were investigated spectroscopically, electrochemically and theoretically. All complexes exhibit ligand-based 1π,π* transitions in the UV region, 1MLCT absorption in the UV region, and weak low energy 3π, π* transition in visible region. These complexes all exhibit blue phosphorescence at both room temperature and 77K, which is dominated by 3π,π* character. DFT calculation results indicate their lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) from −0.47 to −0.33eV and the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) from −4.97 to −5.33eV. The opto-electrical properties can be influenced drastically by NHC ligands, which would be useful for rational design of optical functional materials.

With the combination of experimental and theoretical methods, their steady and transient state characteristics were researched scientifically. The UV-visible absorption spectra show that the broadband charge transfer absorbance of those bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes can reach 550 nm, all of these complexes reveal the long-lasting phosphorescent emission. Because the excited-state absorption is more powerful than the ground-state absorption, a sturdy reverse saturable absorption (RSA) process can ensue in the visible and near-infrared regions when the complexes are exposed to a 532 nm laser. Therefore, the optical power limiting (OPL) effect follows the trend: > ≈ > > . Generally speaking, the expansion of π-conjugation and the introduction of electron donating/withdrawing groups on the N^N^C ligand could effectively elevate the OPL effect. Therefore, these octahedral bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes might be exploited as potential OPL materials.

Abstract:A series of new cationic iridium( III) complexes [ Ir( piq)(2)( N boolean AND N)](+) PF6- ( 1 - 6) ( piq = 1-phenyl-isoquinoline) containing N boolean AND N ligands with different conjugated lengths were synthesized, where the six N boolean AND N ligands were bipyridine, phenanthroline, 2-pyridyl-quinoline, 2,2'- biquinoline, 1,1'-biisoquinoline, and 2-( 2-quniolinyl) quinoxaline. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction spectra of three complexes were studied, and the iridium( III) centers were found to adopt a distorted octahedral coordination geometry with cis metalated carbons and trans nitrogen atoms. UV-vis, photoluminescence, cyclic voltammetry, and theoretical calculations were employed for studying the photophysical and electrochemical properties. And the excited-state properties were investigated in detail. The excited state of complexes is complicated and contains triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer ( (MLCT)-M-3), triplet ligand-to-ligand charge transfer ( (LLCT)-L-3), and ligand-centered ( cyclometalated) ( (LC)-L-3) transitions simultaneously. Importantly, the emission wavelength can be tuned significantly from 586 to 732 nm by changing the conjugated length of N boolean AND N ligands.
Theoretical Study of the Photophysical Properties and Spin-Orbit Coupling of Blue-Green Ir(|||) Complexes with Low Efficiency Roll-Off Properties

Abstract:Here we designed a series of novel tricyclic metallated Ir(III) complexes containing mixed C^N ligands (fmpp) 2 Ir(acac), (fmpp) 2 Ir(dpis), (fmpp) 2 Ir(tpip), (ph-fpp) 2 Ir(acac), (ph-fpp) 2 Ir(dpis), (ph-fpp) 2 Ir(tpip), their electronic structures, spectral properties, bottommost singlet absorption, and triplet state emission in OLEDs were explored by Density Function Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) methods, where fmpp denotes 4-fluoro-2-(3-fluoro-4-methylphenyl)-5-phenylpyridine, ph-fpp denotes 4-fluoro-2-(2-fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-5-phenylpyridine, acac denotes acetylacetonate, dpis denotes diphenylimidodisilicate, and tpip denotes tetraphenylimido-diphosphinate. At the same time, we also analyzed the spin-orbit coupling constants of these six complexes, and the results showed that these six complexes have high interlinear scramble ability. We hope that this study can be used as a reference in terms of practical experimental synthesis.

Abstract:Four novel Ir-III and Pt-II complexes with cyclometalated ligands bearing a carbazole framework are prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of complexes 1, 3, and 4 reveal that the 3- or 2-position C atom of the carbazole unit coordinates to the metal center. The difference in the ligation position results in significant shifts in the emission spectra with the changes in wavelength being 84 nm for the Ir complexes and 63 nm for the Pt complexes. The electrochemical behavior and photophysical properties of the complexes are investigated, and correlate well with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Electroluminescent devices with a configuration of ITO/NPB/CBP:dopant/BCP/AlQ(3)/LiF/Al can attain very high efficiencies.
