Abstract:In this article, citric acid modified beta-cyclodextrin/activated carbon hybrid (CA-beta-CD/AC) composites were synthesized by crosslinking reaction, and their adsorption properties for methylene blue were studied. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method were used to characterize the structure and the morphology of composite materials. It was investigated that the effect of experiment parameters on the adsorption performance including weight fraction of AC in the composite, the adsorbent dose, the initial concentration of MB, the solution pH value, contact time, and temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir isotherm is 862.07 mg g(-1). Kinetic studies show that the adsorption process follows the pseudo-first-order and pseud-second-order reaction models. Chitosan/Silica Nanocomposite Preparation from Shrimp Shell and Its Adsorption Performance for Methylene Blue

Abstract:In this study, novel chitosan/silica composites with different mass ratios were prepared by in-situ hydrolysis using chitosan (from shrimp shell) as a carrier, triblock copolymer (P123) as the structure-directing agent, and ethyl orthosilicate as a silicon source. These nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques, including the FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM and N2 adsorption–desorption. The results indicated that the morphology and properties of composites changed with the introduction of silica. When the CS/TEOS mass ratio was 0.0775, the CS−2/SiO2 composite displayed a coral-like three-dimensional porous structure with specific surface area of 640.37 m2/g and average pore size of 1.869 nm. The adsorption properties for methylene blue (MB) were investigated as well and the CS−2/SiO2 showed better adsorption performance. The removal rate for MB reached 94.01% with absorbents dosage of 6 g/L, initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH value of 7, temperature of 35 °C, and adsorption time of 40 min. The adsorption process well fitted the Langmuir isothermal model and quasi-second-order adsorption kinetics model. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB was 13.966 mg/g based on Langmuir fitting. The surface functional groups of the composites can play an important role in the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of CS−2/SiO2 on MB involved electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and functional group complexation. In addition, the prepared chitosan/silica composites showed good reusability at six cycles, making them a promising material in the application of removing dyeing wastewater.

Abstract:A novel composite basing on the Fe3O4 nanoparticle, the graphite oxide nanosheet (GON), and the citric acid-crosslinked β-cyclodextrin polymer (CA-CDP) was prepared for the purpose of removing the methylene blue (MB) dye from water. The structure of the resultant Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite was investigated by the scanning electron microscope, the two dimensional EDS mapping, the thermal gravimetric analyzer, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, the wide angle X-ray diffraction, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, and the zeta potential measurement. The Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite not only had a good MB adsorption capacity of 173 mg/g but also a high saturation magnetization of 36.4 emu/g. It was found that the MB adsorption capacity of the Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite increased with the increasing initial MB solution pH value especially in the low-pH-value range. Moreover, the MB adsorption mechanism, the MB adsorption isotherm, and the MB adsorption kinetic of the Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite were investigated. It was found that 1) the good adsorption ability of the Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite for the MB dye originated from the electrostatic attraction, the Lewis acid-Lewis base interaction, the host-guest supramolecular interaction and the π-π interaction, and 2) the MB adsorption isotherm and the MB adsorption kinetic of the Fe3O4/GON/CA-CDP composite could be well explained by the Sips model and the intraparticle diffusion model, correspondingly.

Abstract:In this study, an efficient and economical modification with low chemical concentration process was used for preparing biosorbent. Corn stalk pith (CP) was esterified with different polycarboxylic (tartaric, citric, and malic) acids, and then the resultant modified products were applied as sorbents to remove methylene blue (MB) via sorption. Compared with the raw materials, the esterification led to some variation in the specific surface area, pore volume and structure, which thereby affected the sorption efficacy of MB. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model well described the MB sorption for all modified CPs. Following modification, sorption capacity increased by 290.1 % for tartaric acid modified-CP, 759.0 % for citric acid modified-CP and 658.2 % for malic acid modified-CP, and the maximum MB sorption were 208.3, 458.7 and 404.9 mg/g, respectively. The mechanisms of MB sorption via modified CP involve electrostatic interaction, π - π interaction, and hydrogen bonds interaction. The substantial enhancement on MB sorption by the CP esterified with polycarboxylic acids provides a novel means for dyes removal from wastewater.

Abstract:An efficient composite adsorbent was prepared based on acryloyl starch/carboxymethyl cellulose grafting copolymerization for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue. The developed composite hydrogels were characterized by means of FTIR, SEM (EDS-SEM), and XRD. Various parameters affecting the removal of methylene blue such as the type of adsorbents, pHs, the amount of adsorbents dosage, initial methylene blue concentration, and contact time were optimized using a series of batch adsorption experiments. The experimental data of the adsorption process were more fitted to Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 = 0.9898) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 483.5 mg/g and batch kinetic experiments revealed that the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption process was rapid and equilibrium was reached within 30 min. When the adsorption dosage is 0.2 g L −1 , the adsorption yield for 100 mg L −1 methylene blue solution can reach 96.7 %. Therefore, acryloyl starch/carboxymethyl cellulose grafting copolymerization composite hydrogel present excellent adsorption efficiency, shows the potential application in future treatment of dyes wastewater.

Abstract:In the current study, a porous composite material, hydroxyapatite/chitosan/microcrystalline-cellulose (CaHAp–CS–MCC), was successfully prepared and used for the adsorption of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) from water. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), specific surface area (SSA), and atomic force microscope (AFM) were used to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the prepared adsorbents. CaHAp–CS–MCC exhibited a decrease in crystallinity and reduction in crystallite size. CaHAp–CS–MCC surface exhibited cracks and pores. AFM displayed changes in surface micro-texture of CaHAp, formation of new surface structures, and variations in particle size and distribution. Upon grafting CaHAp with CS and MCC, its specific surface area decreased from 139.224 to 11.775 m 2 /g. BET suggested that filling CaHAp pores by CS and MCC contributed to the reduction in surface area. The pore volume values decreased from 2.56 × 10 –1 (CaHAp) to 3.91 × 10 –2 cm 3 /g (CaHAp–CS–MCC). Adsorption equilibrium was reached at about 40 min. The adsorption capacities values of CaHAp–CS–MCC and CaHAp were equal to 248 mg/g and 92 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-second order and the Langmuir equations fitted well the adsorption phenomenon. The calculated thermodynamic parameters showed an exothermic and non-spontaneous system.

Abstract:In this work, a novel potential adsorbent, citric acid (CA)-modified biochar, named as CAWB, was obtained from water hyacinth biomass by slow pyrolysis in a N2 environment at 300 °C. The CA modification focused on enhancing the contaminants adsorption capacity of biochar pyrolyzed at relatively low temperature. Over 90 % of the total methylene blue (MB) could be removed at the first 60 min by CAWB, and the maximum MB adsorption capacity could reach to 395 mg g−1. The physicochemical properties of CAWB was examined by FTIR, XPS, SEM, and BET analysis. The results indicated that the additional carboxyl groups were introduced to the surface of CAWB via the esterification reaction with CA, which played a significant role in the adsorption of MB. Batch adsorption studies showed that the initial MB concentration, solution pH, background ionic strength, and temperature could affect the removal efficiency obviously. The adsorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the MB adsorption onto CAWB was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The regeneration study revealed that CAWB still exhibited an excellent regeneration and adsorption performance after multiple cycle adsorptions. The adsorption experiments of actual dye wastewater by CAWB suggested that it had a great potential in environmental application.

Abstract:In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) @ bamboo shoot shell cellulose nanowhisker (BSCN) @ carbon nanotube (CNT) electrospun composite membrane with enhanced dye adsorption performance was prepared. Methyl blue (MB) was used for dye experiment. The results showed that with the increase of BSCNs, the diameter of the nanofibers in composite membranes gradually increased. When 1.2% BSCNs was added, the removal rate of methylene blue is up to 92.56%, and the kinetics was also investigated. The prepared different composite membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate the surface morphology of fabricated structures, functional groups on the surface of nanofibers and thermal properties. The prepared TEMPO oxidized BSCN based composite membranes can be used as an excellent substrate in the elimination of methylene blue, which is promising in the development of environment-friendly water purifying materials.

Abstract:A cellulose-based sodium alginate/iron hydroxide (C/SA/Fe) composite hydrogel was fabricated by using epichlorohydrin as cross-linking agent as an effective adsorbent for dye. The physicochemical structure of the C/SA/Fe hydrogel was characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD and TG. The adsorption performance for the removal of methylene blue (MB) was investigated. In addition, the selective adsorption of cationic dye was also studied. The FTIR analysis revealed that the Fe(OH)3 colloidal particles was successfully combined in the cellulose/sodium alginate hydrogel. The modified hydrogel had better adsorption performance, and the maximum adsorption capacity of C/SA/Fe0.5 for MB was 105.93 mg/g according to the fitting results of adsorption isotherm. The kinetic study showed that MB adsorption of C/SA/Fe was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption of MB in C/SA/Fe was dominated by chemisorption mechanism such as ion exchange or electron sharing. The adsorption data fits well with the Langmuir model. Thermodynamics analysis showed that the MB adsorption by C/SA/Fe was exothermic, spontaneous, favorable and feasible. After five adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity was almost unchanged. So, the C/SA/Fe hydrogel is a potential material in the field of the recovery of agricultural by-products or other bio-based cellulose, or environmental protection, etc.

Abstract:A modified loess/chitosan composite (ML@CS) was prepared via solution. The microstructure and physicochemical properties of ML@CS were characterised via scanning electron microscope (SEM), Zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). An aqueous solution of methyl orange (MO) was used as simulated wastewater from which the influence of the initial concentration and pH of MO, the dosage amount and regeneration performance of ML@CS, adsorption temperature, and time on the adsorption effect of MO were systematically investigated. The adsorption kinetics, isothermal adsorption, and adsorption mechanism were also analysed. The results indicate that ML@CS had a good adsorption effect on MO. When the initial concentration of MO was 200 mg/L, pH was 5.0, and ML@CS dosage was 1.0 g/L, the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 180 min at room temperature, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity and removal rate reached 199.52 mg/g and 99.75%, respectively. After five adsorption–desorption cycles, the MO removal rate remained above 82%. The adsorption behaviour of ML@CS for MO conforms to the pseudo–second–order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. The spontaneous exothermic process was mainly controlled by monolayer chemical adsorption and the physical adsorption only played an auxiliary role. ML@CS efficiently adsorbed MO in water and can be used as a high-efficiency, low-cost adsorbent for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Modification is widely used to enhance the adsorption performance of pristine hydrochar (HBC) and pyrochar (BC). However, comparisons between modified HBC and BC toward pollutant removal have rarely been reported. In this study, pristine HBC and BC derived from rice straw were first produced, and then citric acid (CA) was used as a modifier to synthesize CA-modified HBC (CAHBC) and CA-modified BC (CABC). Furthermore, the adsorption performance of biochars toward methylene blue (MB) was investigated. The results showed that BC exhibits relatively rough surfaces and contains more minerals (ash), whereas HBC has plentiful O-containing functional groups and fewer minerals. CA modification partially removed minerals from the surface of BC, which weakened the ion exchange, surface complexation, and n–π interaction, resulting in a lower adsorption ability toward MB. By contrast, CA produced more O-containing functional groups on the surface of HBC, which strengthened the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, thus increasing the adsorption capacity toward MB. The two-compartment model showed a good fit to the adsorption process of MB on CAHBC, and the isotherm data for MB adsorption by HBC and CAHBC are suitable for the Freundlich model. The highest adsorption amount of MB using CAHBC was 80.13 mg·g –1 , which was 27.66% higher than that for CABC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the carboxyl groups in the surface functional groups of CAHBC played a crucial role in the MB adsorption process. In addition, CAHBC showed a good performance for a wide range of pH values (4.0–10.0) and under the interference of coexisting ions, and also presented a recycling ability. Furthermore, the adsorption of MB on CAHBC biochar was a spontaneous, exothermic, degree-of-randomness-increasing process. Consequently, CA modification of HBC is a promising strategy and could be used for MB removal from aquatic environments.

Abstract:In this work, xanthan gum-based composites were successfully graft-modified by amantadine (XG-Fe3+/AM) with higher adsorption capacity and selectivity on recycling cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) from aqueous solution. The adsorption equilibrium of MB could be achieved approximately within 5 min when the initial concentration was 100 mg/L, and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 565 mg/g. After 5 desorption-regeneration cycles, the removal rate of XG-Fe3+/AM for MB could still be as high as 95 % with slight decrement. Additionally, the effects of pH, contact time, temperature and initial dye concentration on the adsorption performance of MB were systematically examined. Furthermore, the adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, BET and XPS analysis. In mixed anionic and cationic dyes, the adsorption selectivity of XG-Fe3+/AM on MB in the mixture of MB and methyl orange (MO) reached up to 99.69 %. Molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the trend of adsorption energy for dyes was in good agreement of the experimental order of adsorption capacities and molecular sizes among seven anionic and cationic dyes based on molecular matching effect and electrostatic interaction. Therefore, XG-Fe3+/AM is an eco-friendly, facile-synthesis and high-selectivity adsorbent, which remove cationic dyes in multi-component systems through electrostatic interaction and molecular matching effect.

Abstract:The textile printing and dyeing industry, as one of the important pillars of the global economy, has become an environmental problem that needs to be solved because of the increasingly serious pollution of dye wastewater generated during its production process. Dye wastewater not only contains high concentrations of organic dyes, but also often accompanied by heavy metal ions, additives and salts and other pollutants, if discharged directly without effective treatment, will seriously pollute the water body, destroying the ecological balance, and affecting the survival and health of human beings and aquatic organisms. In order to deal with the problems of serious pollution, large discharge and high cost of dye wastewater, it is necessary to develop an efficient, economic and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment system. It is particularly important to develop efficient, economical and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment technologies. Adsorption is considered as a promising method for wastewater treatment. In this study, we focused on the development of new and efficient adsorbent materials. Taking methylene blue, a typical dye, as an example, we skillfully composited modified biochar with montmorillonite, a natural mineral material, through pyrolysis and intercalation strategies, and conducted in-depth investigations on the effects of the composites on the adsorption of methylene blue in water, the factors affecting the regeneration performance of the adsorbents, and the thermodynamic characteristics of the adsorption. The effect of the composite material on the adsorption of methylene blue in water, the factors affecting the regeneration performance of the adsorbent and the adsorption thermodynamic characteristics were investigated in depth, with a view to providing certain theoretical and practical references for the effective treatment of dye wastewater.

The adsorption technique is an effective way to deal with these two issues. Developing high-efficiency adsorbents is an essential work in the adsorption field. In this work, a simple carbonization method has been developed to prepare porous carbon. The morphology and structure of the prepared porous carbon were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and surface area measurement. By studying the influence of preparation conditions on the structure and properties of the prepared carbon materials, it was found that the carbon materials prepared at 900 °C (PCMCA-900) exhibited a high specific surface area of 1476 m 2 g −1 and a high total pore volume of 0.951 cm 3 g −1 . The PCMCA-900 showed the highest CO 2 uptake of 7.67 mmol g −1 at 0 oC and the adsorption capacity of PCMCA-900 decreased by less than 5% after 10 times recycling. Moreover, when PCMCA-900 was used as an adsorbent to remove Congo red in water, an adsorption capacity of 652.3 mg g −1 was achieved. Therefore, potassium citrate-derived porous carbon is a desirable candidate for excellent CO 2 adsorption and Congo red in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:The attapulgite/carbon (ATP/C) nanocomposite was successfully prepared by two ecofriendly raw materials (ATP, which is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate widespread in nature, and d‐xylose, which can be obtained from rice hull, wheat straw, etc.) through a facile one‐pot hydrothermal procedure. The synthesis conditions, including reaction time, hydrothermal temperature, and the concentration of d‐xylose, were regulated to investigate the morphology, functional groups, and pore properties of ATP/C. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the obtained ATP/C materials had great potential in treatment of methylene blue from aqueous solution. A possible formation mechanism of ATP/C nanocomposite was proposed by powder X‐ray diffraction, TG analysis, and N2 adsorption–desorption study, which revealed that carbon successfully anchored onto ATP by the chemical bond of SiOC. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 34: 437–444, 2015

Abstract:The biomass of mangosteen shells was utilized as a raw material to prepare activated carbon based on mangosteen shells through a two-step process of mixed alkali carbonization and activation. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the activated carbon in removing methylene blue. The optimum preparation conditions for the study are KOH : NaOH : MSC = 1 : 1 : 1 with a particle size of 80 mesh. The activated carbon exhibits a BET specific surface area of 1432.699 m 2 /g and a Langmuir maximum specific surface area of 2066.130 m 2 /g. It demonstrates excellent adsorption performance for methylene blue, with a maximum adsorption amount of 985.5 mg/g. Characterization of the activated carbon is conducted using various techniques including Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray Diffraction Instrument (XRD), Raman Spectrometry (RMS), Fourier IR Spectrometry (FT-IR), XPS, and BET theory. The adsorption results were consistent with the Freundlich model and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, indicating that the carbon material exhibits multilayer physical adsorption characteristics for methylene blue. The prepared material offers a large specific surface area, good environmental economics, and excellent adsorption performance, making it a promising choice for adsorption material preparation compared to other biomass activated carbons.

Adsorption Behaviors of Cationic Methylene Blue and Anionic Reactive Blue 19 Dyes onto Nano-Carbon Adsorbent Carbonized from Small Precursors

Abstract:In this work, an innovative nano-carbon material (N-CM) adsorbent was reported for exploring its adsorption behaviors toward cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic reactive blue 19 (RB19) pollutants. The proposed N-CM was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal treatment of citric acid and zinc gluconate small precursors. N-CM consists of nanosheets that have an advantageous specific surface area, large sp2/sp3 hybridized domains, and abundant nitrogen/oxygen-containing surface functional groups. The synergistic effects of these features are conducive to the MB and RB19 adsorption. Different from anionic RB19 adsorption (79.54 mg/g) by the cooperative π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding, cationic MB adsorbed onto N-CM mainly by the electrostatic attraction at the natural pH solution (> pHpzc), with an adsorption capacity up to 118.98 mg/g. Interestingly, both MB and RB19 adsorption conformed to the pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 ≥ 0.995) and Langmuir isothermal (R2 ≥ 0.990) models, accompanied by similar maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 120.77 and 116.01 mg/g, respectively. Their adsorption processes exhibited spontaneously endothermic characteristics. Moreover, N-CM showed superior selective capability toward MB in different mixed dye systems, with high removal efficiencies of 73–89%. These results demonstrate that the high-performance carbon adsorbent prepared from small precursors via low-temperature carbonization shows great potentials in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In the present study, activated carbon (AC), activated carbon/hydroxyapatite (AC/HAp), and carboxymethyl cellulose/activated carbon/hydroxyapatite (CMC/AC/HAp) composite adsorbents were prepared to remediation of methylene blue (MB) from water media. The pyrolysis method used the Pine cone as a natural precursor to synthesize AC. FTIR, XRD, Raman, BET, TEM, and SEM-Dot mapping techniques were applied to characterize synthesized adsorbents. Experimental results demonstrated that the maximum removal efficiency of AC, AC/HAp, and CMC/AC/HAp adsorbents under optimum conditions of pH 8, adsorbent dose 1 g/L, contact time 60 min, initial concentration 10 mg/L, and temperature 25 °C was computed to be 98.75, 98.86, and 98.93 %, respectively. Kinetic and equilibrium data were well-fitted with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of AC, AC/HAp, and CMC/AC/HAp was determined to be 40, 44.248, and 43.86 mg/g, respectively. FTIR results showed that hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions are the main mechanisms of the adsorption process. Results of the thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. Finally, AC, AC/HAp, and CMC/AC/HAp composite adsorbents can be used as promising adsorbents for the remediation of MB from wastewater.
