Abstract:Timbers of the buildings are commonly covered with coatings to increase the fire retardancy. Compared with the current flame retardant coating, the traditional coating used in Chinese heritage buildings is much thicker and mainly acts as the thermal barrier plate. However, this kind of coatings could easily crack and flak affected by the environmental influences, which reduces the Heat insulation property of the timber. In this study, ignition and downward flame spread over wood boards were conducted by varying the gap (from 0 mm to 100 mm) and orientation (Vertical and Horizontal) of the Thermal Barrier Plate (TBP) under a constant external radiative heat flux to analyze the effect of cracking gap and direction of the coating on the ignition and downward flame spread of vertical timber components in heritage buildings. The results showed that the ignition time follows an 'inverse N-shaped' trend with the increasing gap of TBPs, which sequentially controlled by effects of solid phase heat loss, pyrolysis gas convection blockage effect formed by the waveform wall formed by the protruding TBPs and plenty fuel supply. There is a critical gap (about 6 mm) existing as the transition point. If the gap is below the critical value, the ignition time of horizontal orientation is shorter, and if it exceeds the critical value, the ignition time of the vertical orientation is shorter. In addition, the crossing flame spreading rate, which indicates that the speed of the upward flame cross the middle thermal barrier plate zone ignite the lower wood board, shows a 'N-shaped' trend with increasing TBP gap, due to the similar controlling mechanisms to the ignition time, and for the vertical orientation it is consistently greater than that of the horizontal orientation. The flame fails to spread across the middle TBP zone and the wood board extinguishes when the TBP gap and the fuel mass flux both below the critical values.
