Abstract:Braess paradox is a well-known paradox in transportation researches. In urban cities, there are many different kinds of complex road networks. Unavoidably, some of them fall into the Braess paradox and it is hardly realized. In this paper, two proposed approaches are applied to find and avoid the Braess paradox in urban road networks. With the first approach, the links that cause the Braess paradox in the urban road networks with the current origination-destination (OD) matrix can be tested. The other approach is to calculate the range of the OD flows that makes these links fall into the Braess paradox. Unlike other approaches proposed in literature, this proposed approach can figure out the range of traffic demands in the networks with multiple OD pairs. Moreover, by applying these two approaches, the authors design a traffic management called link restriction which can easily figure out which link should be closed down temporarily and when to resume operation to reduce the total travel times of networks with flexible managements. Abstract:Braess illustrated an apparently paradoxical situation in equilibrium traffic flow in which adding a new link to traffic network results in increased equilibrium travel cost for all travelers.Analyzing a simple network with Braess Paradox,we state that it occurs when the Nash equilibrium is not Pareto optimal.When traffic planning,the structure probably leading to Braess Paradox should be avoided.While for the existing road network,traffic control and guidance is used to assign the traffic flow to reach Pareto Optimum in order to avoid Braess Paradox.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity and demand for transportation networks, effective routing planning has attracted more and more attention. Different modes of transportation, such as the airplane, railway and so on, work together, forming a multi-modal transportation network. Therefore, this paper studies the routing and congestion problems in the multi-modal transportation network, and shows how to increase the network capacity as much as possible while saving time and economic costs, so as to avoid congestion and realize the effective use of different modes of transportation. This paper simulates the influence of two main factors on the network capacity, the parameter which shows the importance between time costs and economic costs, and the difference between different transportation modes. The results show the change of the network capacity when the time cost and economic cost are of different importance. There exists a critical point that can balance time costs and economic costs, so as to maximize network capacity. Then this paper further finds out the method of estimating the condition when the network takes the maximum capacity through theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The Braess's Paradox (BP) is the observation that adding one or more roads to the existing road network will counter-intuitively increase traffic congestion and slow down the overall traffic flow. Previously, the existence of the BP is modeled using the static traffic assignment model, which solves for the user equilibrium subject to network flow conservation to find the equilibrium state and distributes all vehicles instantaneously. Such approach neglects the dynamic nature of real-world traffic, including vehicle behaviors and the interaction between vehicles and the infrastructure. As such, this article proposes a dynamic traffic network model and empirically validates the existence of the BP under dynamic traffic. In particular, we use microsimulation environment to study the impacts of an added path on a grid network. We explore how the network flow, vehicle travel time, and network capacity respond, as well as when the BP will occur.

Abstract:One of the important projects of spatial complexity science is spatial complication,which needs concrete and substaintial researches by means of effective methods.The paradox of traffic assignment problems is taken as an example to show how a system of cities and towns become complicate with the passage of time.Planning theory,graph theory,and differential dynamics,and so on, are employed to analyze the Braess's paradox of traffic network,and new mathematical models are built in the process of geographical analyses based on the Braess's network that is symmetric in macro-level.After new expressway is added in the network,two changes appear: one is macro-symmetry breaking of Braess's network,and the other is spatial interaction between vehicle flows of different communication lines.Spatial interaction is associated with time lag and feedback what always give rise to non-linearity,while symmetry breaking implies spatial order breaking and reconstruction.A conclusion is drawn that spatial interaction and macro symmetry breaking are two dynamic factors activating spatial complication of self-organizing network of cities and towns.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate some new dynamic phenomena of Braess's paradox in transportation networks when both the departure time and route choices are considered simultaneously. The classical Wardropian user equilibrium principle is used to characterize route choice behavior, and the traditional bottleneck models with deterministic queues are employed to describe user's departure fine choice behavior. New Braess's paradoxes with dynamic user response have been found in respect to the point queue and physical queue assumptions, and the mechanisms of Such paradoxes are analyzed in details. Furthermore, it is shown in a numerical example that a paradox may Occur in network when physical queue assumption is made, but the paradox may not be found in network if the point queue assumption is adopted in the proposed dynamic traffic assignment model. Due to the significant difference between point queue and physical queue assumptions, spatial dimension of queues has to be considered carefully in dynamic traffic assignment models. Finally, some traffic management measures are suggested and examined to resolve the Potential paradoxes, Such as link closing, ramp metering, dynamic road pricing, lane partitioning, and adaptive traffic control etc.

Abstract:Braess’s paradox is a counterintuitive fact that adding new links to a network can increase travel costs due to routing competition. Real networks may have unreasonably constructed roads that cause Braess paradoxes. Therefore, to improve the performance of the transportation networks, it is a necessary task to identify Braess paradox affected locations and close them. In this paper, we study the Braess paradox detection problem. Given a transportation network, we seek for a set of Braess-tainted roads whose closure will reduce travel cost. The problem is formulated by a mixed integer linear programme that can be solved by employing commercial computing package. A numerical example is demonstrated to show the performance of the programme.

Abstract:Braess’s paradox exposes a counterintuitive phenomenon that when travelers selfishly choose their routes in a network, removing links can improve the overall network performance. Under the model of nonatomic selfish routing, we characterize the topologies of k-commodity undirected and directed networks in which Braess’s paradox never occurs. Our results strengthen Milchtaich’s series-parallel characterization (Milchtaich, Games Econom. Behav. 57(2), 321–346 (2006)) for the single-commodity undirected case.

Abstract:Over the past decades, the impact of transport operating strategy improvements on space-time accessibility, which is an important research area for network design problem, has not been explicitly investigated particularly with the use of activity-based approach. In this paper, a novel activity-based space-time accessibility measure is introduced for considering individuals' accessibility to various activities and travels in a unified super-network framework. A bi-level programming model is proposed for optimizing time-dependent transit line headways and fares in a multi-modal transit network from the activity-based space-time accessibility perspective. In the upper level, transit line headways and fares are optimized by time of day to maximize the network-wide activity-based space-time accessibility. At the lower level, an activity-based network equilibrium model is adapted to provide the resultant activity-travel patterns as reactions to the upper level decision. A simplified network in Hong Kong selected area is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model.

Abstract:The ever increasing demand for air travel is likely to induce air traffic congestion which will elicit great economic losses. In the presence of limited airspace capacity as well as the saturated airway network, it is no longer practicable to mitigate air traffic congestion by adding new airways/links. In this paper, we provide a "counter-intuitive" perspective towards air traffic congestion mitigation by removing airways/links from a given airway network. We draw inspiration from Braess's Paradox which suggests that adding extra links to a congested traffic network could make the traffic more congested. The paper explores whether Braess's Paradox occurs in airway networks, or more specifically, whether it is possible to better distribute the flow in an airway network by merely removing some of its airways/links. In this paper, We develop a method for Braess's Paradox detection in any given airway network. To validate the efficacy of the method, a case study is conducted for the South-East Asia airspace covering Singapore airway network, by using 6 months of ADS-B data. The results show that Braess's Paradox does occur in airway networks and the proposed method can successfully identify the airway network links that may cause it. The results also demonstrate that, upon removing such links, the total travel time for a given day traffic at a given flight level, was reduced from 8661.15 min to 8328.64 min, a reduction of 332.5 min. This amounts to a saving of 3.8% in travel time.

Abstract:Traffic paradox is an important phenomenon which needs attention in transportation network design and traffic management. Previous studies on traffic paradox always examined user equilibrium (UE) or stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) conditions with a fixed traffic demand (FD) and set the travel costs of links as constants under the SUE condition. However, traffic demand is elastic, especially when there are new links added to the network that may induce new traffic demand, and the travel costs of links actually depend on the traffic flows on them. This paper comprehensively investigates the traffic paradox under different equilibrium conditions including the user equilibrium and the stochastic user equilibrium with a fixed and elastic traffic demand. Origin-destination (OD) mean unit travel cost (MUTC) has been chosen as the main index to characterize whether the traffic paradox occurs. The impacts of travelers' perception errors and travel cost sensitivity on the occurrence of the traffic paradox are also analyzed. The conclusions show that the occurrence of the traffic paradox depends on the traffic demand and equilibrium conditions; higher perception errors of travelers may lead to a better network performance, and a higher travel cost sensitivity will create a reversed traffic paradox. Finally, several appropriate traffic management measures are proposed to avoid the traffic paradox and improve the network performance.

Abstract:Under the user equilibrium (UE) behavior assumption, the Braess Paradox (BP) and its variations have been well investigated. However, users do not always follow the UE behavior. In reality, there are likely quiet a few non-collaborative Cournot-Nash (CN) players coexisting with UE players in the common traffic network. Users in a CN player are completely collaborative to minimize their total travel cost and users subordinating to different players are perfectly competitive. Considering both UE and CN players in the congested network, it remains unclear that under what conditions the BP will occur. In this paper, the BP occurrence conditions under the UE-CN mixed equilibrium are firstly investigated using the classical Braess network with linear link cost function. Then, the BP conditions are studied to the ordinary grid network with nonlinear link cost function. It is shown that the BP occurrence in the conventional Braess network depends upon the link travel time function parameters and the demand level of users controlled by UE/CN players, and the BP occurs in the grid network only for certain demand combinations of users under one UE player and two CN players. Abstract:The Braess paradox describes the counterintuitive situation that the addition of new roads to road networks can lead to higher travel times for all network users. Recently we could show that user optima leading to the paradox exist in networks of microscopic transport models. We derived phase diagrams for two kinds of route choice strategies that were externally tuned and applied by all network users. Here we address the question whether these user optima are still realized if intelligent route choice decisions are made based upon two kinds of traffic information. We find that the paradox still can occur if the drivers 1) make informed decisions based on their own past experiences or 2) use traffic information similar to that provided by modern navigation apps. This indicates that modern traffic information systems are not able to resolve Braess' paradox.

Abstract:Braess' paradox has been shown to appear rather generically in many systems of transport on networks. It is especially relevant for vehicular traffic where it shows that in certain situations building a new road in an urban or highway network can lead to increased average travel times for all users. Here we address the question whether this changes if the drivers (agents) have access to traffic information as available for modern traffic networks, i.e. through navigation apps and or personal experiences in the past. We study the effect of traffic information in the classical Braess network, but using a microscopic model for the traffic dynamics, to find out if the paradox can really be observed in such a scenario or if it only exists in some theoretically available user optima that are never realized by drivers that base their route choice decisions intelligently upon realistic traffic information. We address this question for different splits of the two information types.

An Integrated Analytical Process of Traffic Assignment Problems of Braess' Network

Abstract:Braess' network can be regarded as a significant metaphor of human geographical phenomena.By means of this simple model,we can reveal many important geographical principles.Based on the problem of traffic assignment in Braess' network,an integrated analytical process is propounded in this paper for efficiently exploring complex geographical systems.For simplicity,only the linear Braess' network without the third expressway is taken into consideration.The question is as follows: how the traffic flow is assigned between the two routes which have odd symmetric structure.Six methods are exerted to solve this problem,including Lagrange multiplier method(LMM),linear dynamical analysis,numerical simulation,numerical computation,Markov chain,and entropy-maximizing method.In the first place,Lagrange multiplier method is employed to give a preliminary solution.Secondly,a pair of linear dynamic equations is constructed for making deep analysis.The dynamic equations are utilized to make numerical computation and simulation.Further,Markov chain is used to make a prediction analysis.All the five kinds of analysis reach the same conclusion by different routes: the traffic flow should be averagely allocated in the two roads.Finally,the method of entropy-maximizing is employed to bring to light the theoretical foundation of average assignment of traffic flow in the Braess' network.The entropy-maximization of geographical systems suggests the most equity for individuals and efficiency on the whole.All the six methods can be integrated to solve a problem from multifarious views of angles.If the conclusions drawn by different approaches are consistent with each other,the question is clear.However,in practice,some conclusions are not very clear,or even a conclusion based on one method may come into conflict with another one based on a different method.In this instance,the analytical process of multi-views of angles will help us solve the problem more efficiently and rapidly.

Abstract:We study the Braess paradox in the transport network as originally proposed by Braess with totally asymmetric exclusion processes (TASEPs) on the edges. The Braess paradox describes the counterintuitive situation in which adding an edge to a road network leads to a user optimum with higher travel times for all network users. Travel times on the TASEPs are nonlinear in the density, and jammed states can occur due to the microscopic exclusion principle, leading to a more realistic description of trafficlike transport on the network than in previously studied linear macroscopic mathematical models. Furthermore, the stochastic dynamics allows us to explore the effects of fluctuations on network performance. We observe that for low densities, the added edge leads to lower travel times. For slightly higher densities, the Braess paradox occurs in its classical sense. At intermediate densities, strong fluctuations in the travel times dominate the system's behavior due to links that are in a domain-wall state. At high densities, the added link leads to lower travel times. We present a phase diagram that predicts the system's state depending on the global density and crucial path-length ratios.

Abstract:The unique relationship between the value capture mechanism (VCM) and transit-oriented development (TOD) stations and their peripheral areas, which progressively develops an expanded multimodal network, is well acknowledged in the transport industry. However, in regards to the location of TOD stations, insufficient attention has been paid to user travel be-haviours and the operating mechanism of the multimodal network. To bridge this research gap, we develop a bi-level programming model for the location of TOD stations that analyses user travel behaviour in the multimodal network. The VCM and transit priority are the objectives of the upper level of this multi-objective optimization model. And the lower level of the model is a modified multimodal network equilibrium based on the Davidson function. Using a simple nu-merical simulation, this study proposes explanations for some traffic paradoxes from the perspective of a multimodal network equilibrium. We also illustrate competition and collabora-tion between rail and bus transport systems. Finally, this study uses an empirical case to describe the feasibility and applicability of the model. The results demonstrate that the location of TOD stations is not only one of the keys to the competitiveness of public transport but is also relevant to implementing its VCM.

Abstract:Transport networks, such as railway networks and air port networks, are a kind of random network with complex topology. Recently, more and more scholars paid attention to various kinds of transport networks and try to explore their inherent characteristics. Here we study the exponential properties of a recently introduced Bus Transport Networks (BTNs) evolution model with random overlapping clique structure, which gives a possible explanation for the observed exponential distribution of the connectivities of some BTNs of three major cities in China. Applying mean-field theory, we analyze the BTNs model and prove that this model has the character of exponential distribution of the connectivities, and develop a method to predict the growth dynamics of the individual vertices, and use this to calculate analytically the connectivity distribution and the exponents. By comparing mean-field based theoretic results with the statistical data of real BTNs, we observe that, as a whole, both of their data show similar character of exponential distribution of the connectivities, and their exponents have same order of magnitude, which show the availability of the analytical result of this paper.

Abstract:Braess's paradox shows a counterintuitive scenario where more resources may cause worse traffic performance when all users pursue their personal optimum. Previous study on this topic mainly focused on the specific traffic volume to show the existence of such a paradox. For real-world complex communication networks, on the contrary, the traffic volume changes from time to time. Therefore, it is important to study the traffic performance under this dynamic condition. We find that Braess's paradox does not happen when the traffic volume is sufficiently low or sufficiently high. Between these two extremes, the probability that Braess's paradox happens also changes with the traffic volume. This result is helpful for communication network planning and management.
