Abstract:Computational complexity is one of most important criteria in evaluating the performance of deadlock control methods. Based on Petri net models, a polynomial deadlock avoidance method is addressed for a class of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) with key resources. It is first proved that there are three kinds of reachable markings in these FMSs: safe ones, deadlock, and secondary deadlock. Second, an algorithm with polynomial complexity to determine the safety of a new marking resulting from a safe one is presented. It adopts a one-step look-ahead method and two-step look-ahead one to prohibit the firings of transitions that result in deadlock and secondary one, respectively. Thus, a polynomial deadlock avoidance policy for a class of FMSs with key resources is established. An illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:Based on Petri net models, this work aims to address deadlock prevention problem for a class of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), which can be modeled by systems of simple sequential processes with resources (S3PRs). In an S3PR, a ξ-resource is a resource with unit capacity shared by two or more maximal perfect resource transition circuits (MPRT-circuits) that do not contain each other. For S3PRs without ξ-resources, the optimal Petri net-based polynomial complexity deadlock avoidance policies are synthesized in the previous work. This work focuses on the design of optimal Petri net controllers for S3PRs with ξ-resources. First, the concepts of key resources and key transitions are introduced. A key resource is a special ξ-resource. If there is a key transition in an S3PR, there is a key resource in it, but not vice versa. For S3PRs with key resources, if there is no key transition in them, optimal Petri net controllers are synthesized; if there exist key transitions in them, it proves that when these nets are maximally permissive controlled (called as first-controlled), key transitions can result in the occurrence of deadlock phenomena (called as secondary-deadlock) in the controlled nets. Second, for S3PRs with key resources that contain key transitions and satisfy the Key-condition, secondary-deadlocks can be characterized by maximal perfect control transition circuits (MPCT-circuits) that are saturated at some reachable markings of their first-controlled systems. Then, by adding a control place and related arcs to each MPCT-circuit, secondary-deadlocks can be prevented and optimal Petri net controllers are designed for S3PRs with key resources that satisfy the Key-transition. Thereby, an optimal deadlock control policy for a class of FMSs with key resources is synthesized. Finally, a few examples are provided to demonstrate the presented policy.
Pre-allocation and partition of buffers for deadlock control in flexible manufacturing systems

Abstract:In order to make a live flexible manufacturing system (FMS) in which resources and buffers are shared, Liu et al. used the buffer pre-allocation rule to greatly reduce deadlock states and proposed a buffer partition policy to forbid the remaining deadlock states. They also defined a subclass of Petri nets called resource-shared assembly net with buffers (RSANB) to characterize the rule and policy. Nevertheless, only one resource in the FMSs modeled by RSANB can be used in each step in their policy, so its modeling power is limited. This paper indicates that the buffer pre-allocation rule and buffer partition policy can also be used to prevent deadlocks in FMSs in which multiple resources can be used in each step. Subsequently, an extension of RSANB, called extended resource-shared assembly net with buffers (ERSANB), is defined to show the extended application of this rule and policy. Finally, its application is demonstrated by an FMS example. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Deadlock prevention policies are used to solve the deadlock problems of FMSs. It is well known that the theory of regions is the efficient method for obtaining optimal (i.e., maximally permissive) controllers. All legal and live maximal behaviors of Petri net models can be preserved by using marking/transition-separation instances (MTSIs) or event-state-separation-problem (ESSP) methods. However, they encountered great difficulties in solving all sets of inequalities that is an extremely time consuming problem. Moreover, the number of linear programming problems (LPPs) of legal markings is also exponential with net size when a plant net grows exponentially. This paper proposes a novel methodology to reduce the number of MTSIs/ESSPs and LPPs. In this paper, we used the well-known reduction approach Murata (1989) to simply the construct of system such that the problem of LPPs can then be reduced. Additionally, critical ones of crucial marking/transition-separation instances (COCMTSI) are developed and used in our deadlock prevention policy that allows designers to employ few MTSIs to deal with deadlocks. Experimental results indicate that the computational cost can be reduced. To our knowledge, this deadlock prevention policy is the most efficient policy to obtain maximal permissive behavior of Petri net models than past approaches.

Abstract:Siphon control has been utilized as a general methodology for systems of simple sequential process with resource (S3PR) deadlock systems. Although siphon control imposes additional control places on S3PR systems, it cannot guarantee that the maximum permissiveness is achieved. To solve the problem of deadlock prevention for S3PR, a new policy to design a deadlock-free supervisor with the maximally permissive system is proposed using additional transitions. Additionally, this approach can solve the problem of deadlock prevention for systems of sequential systems with shared resources (S4PR) system models.

Abstract:Deadlock prevention is crucial to the modeling of flexible manufacturing systems. In the Petri net framework, deadlock prevention is often addressed by siphon-based control (SC) policies. Recent research results show that SC methods can avoid full siphon enumeration by using mixed integer programming (MIP) to greatly increase the computational efficiency so that it can be applied in large systems in computable time. Besides, maximally permissive control solutions can be obtained by means of iterative siphon control (ISC) approaches and MIP. Then the remaining problems are redundancy and MIP iterations. Redundant controllers make the closed-loop system more complicated and each MIP iteration increases the total computational time. This article proposes a revised ISC deadlock prevention policy which can achieve better results than the other reported methods in terms of redundancy and MIP iterations while maintaining the maximal permissiveness. Several benchmark examples are provided to illustrate the proposed approach and to be compared with the other reported methods.

Abstract:It is essential to avoid deadlock and blockage in the operation of an automated manufacturing system (AMS) since they cripple a part of the system, if not the whole, and then deteriorate system performance. Though a large number of approaches are developed to resolve this issue, few of them are directly applicable to AMSs with failure-prone resources. This study focuses on the supervision for deadlock avoidance and blockage control in a class of AMSs with multiple unreliable resources, where each resource is a workstation. The authors hope that the system, under the control of a supervisor, can at all time automatically continue producing parts whose processing routes do not contain any of the currently failed workstations. Inspired by the widely known Banker's algorithm and a resource order policy, this study presents a robust supervisory controller that satisfies the above desired requirement. All the evidence shows that authors' policy performs better than the original one in terms of permissiveness. Furthermore, an example AMS from existing literature is used to illustrate the effectiveness of authors' proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method to design Petri net-based deadlock prevention controllers for flexible manufacturing systems. It starts from the computation of the complete deadlock markings by utilizing the conservativeness property of a Petri net model and the necessary and sufficient condition for deadlock. Then, it verifies a small state space including the dangerous and bad markings only by combining one-step look-forward through the original net and one-step look-backward via its reverse net. Subsequently, it defines the set of place invariants from the subset of marked operation places for the so called "elementary controlled bad markings". Finally, it synthesizes a deadlock prevention controller by a simplified invariant-based method. Its obtained deadlock-free controller allows more behavior of the closed-loop system than those obtained via a siphon-based control method. Its computational efficiency is higher than those based on a complete reachability graph-based control method.
Strong Controllable Siphon Basis-Based Robust Deadlock Control for Manufacturing Systems with Multiple Unreliable Resources

Abstract:In real-world automated manufacturing systems (AMSs), a breakdown of unreliable resources in operation often makes most existing deadlock control policies inapplicable. This work focuses on robust deadlock control problem in AMSs with multi-type and multi-unit unreliable resources. The unreliable resource's failure and repair activities are modeled by Petri nets. We introduce a concept of strong controllable siphon basis, which can be seen as an extension of the controllable siphon basis proposed in our previous work. Then by adding a control place with proper depth variable to each strict minimal siphon (SMS) and R-type SMS in a strong controllable siphon basis, we successfully develop a small-scaled robust deadlock controller for AMSs under consideration. Such a robust controller can guarantee that, as long as at least one unit of each unreliable resource type is available, all types of parts can be processed smoothly through any one of their routes even during downtime. Moreover, the number of control places of the proposed controller is no more than that of the activity places in the Petri net model and its size grows polynomially with Petri net model.

Abstract:Supervisory control that ensures deadlock-free and nonblocking operation has been an active research area of manufacturing engineering. So far, most of deadlock control policies in the existing literature assume that allocated resources are reliable. Additionally, a large number of methods are for systems of simple sequential processes with resources (S3PRs), where a part uses only one copy of one resource at each processing step. In contrast, we investigate the automated manufacturing systems (AMSs) that can be modeled by a class of Petri nets, namely S*PUR. S*PUR is a generalization of the S*PR Petri net model, while S*PR is a superclass of S3PR. This work addresses the robust supervision for deadlock avoidance in S*PUR. Specifically, we take into account unreliable resources that may break down while working or being in idle, and the considered AMSs allow the use of multiple copies of different resources per operation stage. Our objective is to control the system so that: 1) when there are breakdowns, the system can continue producing parts of some types whose production does not need any failed resources; and 2) given the correction of all faults, it is possible to complete all the on-going part instances remaining in the system. We illustrate the characteristics of a desired supervisor through several examples, define the corresponding properties of robustness, and develop a control policy that satisfies such properties.

Abstract:Blockage and deadlock are undesirable in an automated manufacturing system (AMS). Thus, addressing these issues is essential to ensure smooth production evolution via system supervisory control. If an AMS contains unreliable resources which may break down unexpectedly, then the situation is complicated and problems become challenging. This work investigates the robust supervision for such AMSs from the perspective of management and control of resource allocation. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a controller for allocating buffer space, such that any failure does not propagate through blocking to stall the rest of the system. In other words, the continual production of every part type not requiring any of the failed resources must be guaranteed at all time. We propose a supervisory control policy that satisfies the above desired property by using formal tools of automata and Petri nets. The policy relaxes the assumption made in previous work that each part type requires at most one failure-prone resource in the predefined production route. Meanwhile, the policy execution and implementation do not need any central buffers. We also present a survey and some comparative studies of various approaches in the literature about robust supervision for deadlock resolution in AMSs.

Abstract:Multiple products through a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) with limited resources can lead to deadlock. In this paper, the authors study the problem of deadlock avoidance by using the Petri net (PN) model for FMSs and introducing the concept of deadlock structure. The necessary and sufficient conditions to prevent deadlock are characterized. The authors use a state feedback restriction policy which prevents some enabled transitions from firing for avoiding deadlock in the system. In particular, when the number of any key kind of resources is greater than one, this policy is minimally restrictive and allows the maximal use of resources in the system. The authors present the PN realization of these restriction policies when the closed-loop system can be modeled by a live PN. The restriction policies can be easily implemented. An example is provided for illustration.

Abstract:Deadlock must be avoided via the shop controller during the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) performing. Considering the complexity of the FMS, various models have been tried for the analysis and design of shop controller. Petri net is suitable to describe the dynamic behavior of the discrete event system. The verification of the system behavior needs structure analysis with complex theoretical proof method. Temporal logic Model Checking has important advantages over traditional theorem prover. It is fully automatic and can produce possible counter-example that is particularly important in finding subtle error in complex transition systems. In this paper, a new method for the deadlock avoidance based on Petri net and Temporal Logic model checking is presented. The specification in the Temporal Logic is expressed according to some result of structure analysis of the Petri net. The model checking is employed to execute the formal verification, which will conduct an exhaustive exploration of all possible behaviors.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Flexible assembly systems (FASs) are a class of resource allocation systems with assembly processes as their inevitable components. Deadlock resolution and liveness enforcement play important roles in the supervisory control of FASs. Design of deadlock avoidance policies (DAPs) for FASs has received significant attention recently. The computational feasibility of real-time DAPs is of great importance for the policies’ online implementation in practical applications. However, there are difficulties brought by the existence of assembly processes. So far, nearly all known DAPs with polynomial-time complexity apply only to systems without assembly operations. This study focuses on the deadlock-avoidance control problem of a broader class of FASs as compared to those discussed in the existing work. Specifically, for an FAS addressed in this paper, each resource can be shared by any two operations, and it also allows multiple resource acquisition at each processing step. This work develops a novel DAP for such FASs, which is based on their Petri-net models and actually an improved Banker’s algorithm that consists of three executable algorithms. Moreover, the computational time complexity of the DAP is polynomial in the size of the system model. The application of the proposed method to some examples illustrates its effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract:The development of an efficient deadlock avoidance policy (DAP) is a critical step in the design and operation of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS). However, even for a simple FMS, the computation of an optimal DAP is intractable. This work addresses the optimal deadlock control problem of FMSs. Based on their Petri net models, it introduces the concept of κ-resources and proves that an FMS containing no κ-resources has only two types of reachable states: safe ones and deadlocks. It then can obtain an optimal DAP with polynomial computational complexity for a broader class of FMSs, which was never seen before. At the same time, for these FMSs, new structurally simpler optimal Petri net controllers are proposed.

Abstract:To solve deadlock problems in a kind of automatic manufacturing system with multiple resource service, a method to describe system structures and dynamic characteristics by Petri nets was proposed. And the concept of cyclic structure in the system Petri net models was defined. The cyclic structures were proved to be the unique subnet structures of the system Petri net model, which could lead to system deadlock. By introducing the auxiliary system Petri net model, a method to compute all elementary maximal cyclic structures was presented. By adding a control place and its related arcs to each elementary maximal cyclic structure to restrict its resource usage, the deadlock could be successfully avoided.

Abstract:This paper presents a deadlock prevention method for a class of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) where deadlocks are caused by unmarked siphons in their Petri net models. This method is an iterative approach consisting of two main stages. At each iteration, a fast deadlock detection technique developed by mixed integer programming (MIP) is used to fmd an unmarked maximal siphon. The fIrst stage, called siphons control, of the proposed method is to add, for each unmarked minimal siphons, a control place to the original net to prevent a minimal siphon from being unmarked. The second stage, called augmented siphons control, is to add a control place to the modified net. The second stage is required since adding control places in the fIrst stage may create new unmarked siphons. In addition, the second stage assures that there are no new unmarked siphons generated. We have obtained the relation of the proposed method and the liveness and reversibility of the controlled net. Finally, manufacturing examples are presented for illustrating the method and allow us to compare with prior methods.
