A Comparative Study on the Impact of Indigenous Innovation Vs. Technology Imports for Domestic Technological Innovation

Abstract:This paper explores the impact of indigenous innovation and technology imports-in the form of import, export and FDI-for domestic innovation, using regression with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors and province level data from 2000 to 2007. A comparative research is done for eastern, middle and western part of China. The empirical analysis shows that in general, indigenous innovation and technology imports both accelerated the development of technological innovation, but the latter played the key role while the effects of the former was not very significant. On the province level, indigenous innovation contributed to technological innovation mostly in the eastern part; technology imports contributed to technological innovation mostly in the middle part; the two ways acted similarly and weakly in the western part. The three districts were different in the ability to absorb new technology and in the stages of foreign economy development, resulting in differences of the impact.
