Abstract:Song Lian was born in the late Yuan dynasty in the Wu zhou prefecture, which was distinguished by Neo-Confucians as ″Little Zou-Lu ″, referring to the native places of Mencius and Confucius respectively. His te achers, like Huang Jin, Liu Guan and Wu Lai, were all famous Confucian scholars. His failure in the imperial civil examinations, along with the social upheaval and political corruption that characterized his time, caused Song Lian to loose confidence in the Yuan regime. As fate would have it, he united with Zhu Yuanzha ng, expending great effort assisting the latter on the way from the hero of the common people up to the founding emperor of the Ming dynasty. In the early Ming period, Song Lian, receiving a lot of special treatment from Emperor Zhu, wrote quite a few essays in praise of him. No wonder, people today tend to detest him in this regard. However, the other side of the coin is that Song Lian's exceedingly harsh living conditions in the beginning of the Ming dynasty caused a big change in his ment ality and literary creation. Firstly, many of Song's essays prior to the Ming ma de a most telling exposure and scathing criticism of the late Yuan's maladminist ration, malpractice, and ghastly ways of the world. His essays of this nature du ring the early Ming, however, were greatly reduced in number and much less trenc hant. Secondly, Song's essays prior to the Ming were subjective, aggressive, for ceful and unrestrained. But, his essays in the early Ming were chiefly persuasiv e, being solemn and refined in style and mild and reserved in tone. Thirdly, Son g Lian as a minister showed loving concern for those at the bottom of society, a nd he wrote biographies for Li Ge, Du Huan, Li Yi and others, praising their goo d virtue and strong character.
