Abstract:Guangzhou plays a specially significant role in modern Chinese culture, for as one of the first places to implement the ″reform and opening-up″ policy it has more and closer connections with foreign countries than the other parts of China because of its ideal location near Hong Kong. Therefore, writers in Guangzhou are more sensitive to the change of contemporary Chinese ideology and lifestyle. Among them, Zhang Xin and Zhang Mei are the two noticeable women writers. Born in Beijing and brought up in Guangzhou, Zhang Xin of Jiangsu descent makes a close show of the snobbish ways of this world with the degeneration of social mores and the disappearance of true feelings in the business practice. Zhang Mei, though not very well-known, has quietly built up her own domain in her production, developing her own way of narration. Their works show the emptiness and loneliness of this modern commercial world. Esthetically, to analyze their works is conducive to better understanding the mentality of contemporary Chinese female writers and their writing as well as the artistic tendency and the mental process of the present-day novel and story writers.Generally speaking, the works of Zhang Xin focus on the culture in southern China that features Guangzhou adjacent to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, depicting the emotional affairs of city people and taking the office buildings, the grand hotels, and the entertainment centers as the background. The city stories thus created are of fresh reality and immediacy. Her narrative vision and main concern are often told from the point of view of modern career women. She shows us the transaction of desire without tender feelings and romance in the modern world. Good at plotting and generalizing the life, Zhang Xin pays special attention to the ″facts″ in reality. But for lack of details and necessary depiction of the inner world of the characters, her works are readable yet short of aftertaste. Too much of her reading will lead to a kind of weariness, giving us the feeling of familiarity with it.Unlike Zhang Xin who is adept in writing medium-length and long novels, Zhang Mei is good at ″long short-stories″. Some of her representative works mainly describe the floating experiences of the young ladies just out of adolescence in the world full of desire. Her works may be considered to have a number of demerits such as lack of profundity, broad vision, lifelikeness and creativity born of imagination, richly artistic appeal, and the way to express things in a rather reserved manner. Nevertheless, she depicts the life and people around her realistically and adequately and with her own esthetical values. What's more, she shows her honest attitude and her concern for the society in the process of writing, which is fundamental for a professional writer. Her stories will stimulate us to think about the problems in reality and put to us the question of ″where to go″.
