Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:This contribution starts from the observation that translation and translation studies (TS) seem to be perceived in a more vocational way than adjacent practices and disciplines. In the beginning of the twenty-first century, digitization and transmedial production led to a diversification of text-modifying and text-adapting practices, which have also affected the romantic concepts of authorship as well as the dominance of the aesthetics of opposition. A strong tendency within TS is already including these new developments and practices in research, and as such broadening the scope and the object of the discipline. However, there is also a tendency opposing this expansion and advocating the narrower object exclusively linked to the traditional practices of translating and interpreting proper. The name discussion about the discipline has been ongoing for a long time, but is now put in a different perspective due to these societal and disciplinary changes and relations.

Abstract:As Translation Studies becomes internationalised, the field expands and includes other disciplines. This article suggests modifications of Holmes' map of Translation Studies by locating translation textbook work as a component in the “applied branch”. This is done on the basis of a study of textbook work in China and in the West. The development and prodigious growth of translation textbooks in China are worthy of attention because textbooks from English into Chinese and from Chinese into English possess unique features that make them differ fundamentally from textbooks dealing with translation between Indo-European languages. It is equally interesting that they provide societal perspectives of Translation Studies: textbooks can be used for tracing not only developments in Translation Studies but also political and societal changes in China. Given the societal need for translation, these textbooks have an enormous market and exert an increasing influence on Translation Studies as a discipline, as well as on the social and economic development of China and the country's status internationally.

Abstract:Since Holmes’ founding statement for translation studies in 1972, four decades have passed. During that time some trends seem to have developed in the discipline, and it is time to stop and take stock. This paper touches upon issues essential to understanding translation studies today, such as (1) the nature of translation; (2) the research scope of translation studies; (3) interdisciplinary orientation and its implications; (4) research methods; and (5) the relationship between translation theory and practice. An examination of these issues indicates that the discipline of translation studies is increasingly subject to opposing or competing research approaches and is exhibiting a kind of disciplinary fragmentation. There are imbalances in the research methods used and in the topics that emerge in the research literature. There is a growing gap between translation theory and practice. This paper tries to examine the reasons for these trends and offer perspectives on ways to reach some common disciplinary and professional ground.

Abstract:Although translation scholars by and large have claimed a disciplinary status for their own studies, translatology has yet to be granted the same kind of legitimacy as has been enjoyed by the more established disciplines. To clarify the way translatology is, or ought to be, positioned within the academic formation is therefore of significant current interests. The author of this article maintains that as an area of studies located where natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities meet, translatology partakes of both contrastive linguistics, comparative literature and cultural studies but belongs to none. It should have as its own object of research all the phenomena in the practice and thematization of translation and interpreting. Its methodology should be pluralistic: either aesthetic, critical, or empirical/scientific.And given the acceleration of the on-going globalizing process, its function is necessarily expanding.

Abstract:"Translation" yesterday (in the 1980s and 1990s) was defined in a certain context. Today, in a more globalized and digitalized world, the concept is changing, becoming more fluid while scholars in TS are becoming more nomadic (in their affiliations, and between disciplines). To avoid as much as possible a terminological inflation in TS and a monolithic and static concept of translation, we must consider the socio-cultural context in which we try not only to define our object of investigation but also to clarify the purpose of our definition(s), considering the wide range of translators and interpreters with different status and working with different e-tools. In addition, a historical perspective is needed: two paradigms are changing, sometimes overlapping. Thus, the feeling of confusion.

Abstract:Current translation theories and translation critiques generally focus on a contrastive analysis between the original text and the rendered one.Little attention is paid to another dimension of the translating process,i.e.the impact of translation on the target language.In the history of translation,however,there have always been great translators who set up the transformation of the target lan-guage as the main objective of their work.This objective has been either neglected or misinterpreted,as in the case of Lu Xun.But if we examine the development of modern Chinese language,we will see that both the modern political discourse and the literary language in China have been deeply influenced by translated texts.

Abstract:Translation Studies now mostly focuses on an enlarged understanding of translation. In line with this growth, this collection aims at providing new perspectives to the field by focusing on the various dimensions of translational acts in the 21st century with special emphasis on multiple identities. In this respect, the book offers wide-ranging topics focusing on sign language interpreting, translator training, gender and translation, hyperobjects in translation, translation technologies, and multimodality in translation. Abstract:By analyzing and comparing the sources and features of cultural approaches to translation studies in China and in Western countries, this article discusses research targets, methodologies and problems of cultural research in Chinese translatology. It points out that new theories, including Western translation theories, broadens the horizon of China's translation studies while, at the same time, cultural research in China's translation studies must be based on China's own conditions and aim at solving China's own practical problems. In this respect, it suggests that Chinese researchers pay more attention to descriptive studies as well as proper assessment and analysis of translation activities and products.

Abstract:This article attempts to highlight the thoughts of some of the prominent figures in translation studies over the past hundred years or so. With the onset of the third wave in translation activities, some patriotic scholars called for the establishment of translator training schools to meet the challenges coming from the West, while others set about introducing Western literature and philosophy into China. In the course of translating, problems cropped up, translators and scholars began to argue about what criteria they should follow, what methods they should use, and how to judge the quality of translation. As China moved into a new era, translation activities boomed and translation studies flourished, all proceeding in an orderly fashion and on a mass scale. A new wave emerged, bringing China closer to the outside world.
Studies on James Legge's English Translation of Traditional Chinese Classics and Reflections on the Necessity of the Interdisciplinary Approach in Translation Studies

Abstract:On the basis of a general survey of the worldwide studies on the Scottish missionary sinologist James Legge's translation of traditional Chinese classics, it is pointed out in the article that although the publications concerned now available are characterized by the strong points of different disciplines respectively, they are sometimes spoilt by the limited research range of these academic fields. More often than not, historians and researchers of philosophy and religion have been unable to probe deep linguistically into the translated texts while linguists have failed to analyze translations from the perspectives of history, philosophy or religion. This kind of research may be incomplete by nature and inevitably results in less convincing conclusions. Therefore, the interdisciplinary approach is highly necessary in translation research.

Abstract:In the context of globalization, different national cultures compete, reject, collide and merge in the process of communication, but these will ultimately be reflected on the issue of cultural identity. With the development and implementation of the ＂going out＂ strategy of Chinese culture, foreign translation of traditional Chinese culture has become increasingly important and urgent. From the perspective of self-cultural identity and cultural identity, this article quotes examples of ancient, modern and modern traditional cultural translation, and uses the academic ideological results of related disciplines as the inheritance and development of previous studies, and uses this as a guide. It also investigates and researches the bidirectional development of cultural identity in the context of traditional cultural translation. Abstract:This article presents a critical review of the current research, issues and future directions for translation studies in digital humanities. It is argued that translation studies in digital humanities has achieved substantial progress, but there exist some problems. On the one hand, research in the field has been limited to the analyses of derivative digital texts based on the use of corpora or text databases, with the result that scanty attention has been paid to the analyses of original digital texts and the use of other kinds of databases. On the other hand, diversified research methods of digital humanities have to be used in addition to text data mining, and the theoretical framework has to be constructed. Therefore, we are required to compile and use a variety of databases for translation studies in digital humanities, and incorporate original digital texts into its research objects. In addition, we are supposed to adopt various research methods of digital humanities for the research in the field, and construct its theoretical framework by drawing upon the theories of digital humanities and translation studies.

Abstract:Researchers have long problematized the prevalence of Eurocentrism in modern Western translation theory. Alternative theories have been developing across many contexts, including China. This review examines 153 theory-related articles in four leading indexed Chinese journals that publish studies on translation. We analyzed the selected articles to explore the patterns in the development of Chinese translation theory through the past decade. Our analysis identified three characteristics of the development of Chinese translation theory: (1) Chinese translation theory developed under a heavy Western influence; (2) translation theories developed by translators; and (3) "theory"-related theoretical development on translation. These insights may help readers who do not have direct access to translation studies published in the Chinese language to better appreciate evolving translation theories that may counteract the inadequacy of Eurocentric approaches.

Abstract:The concept of transculturalism has often been used to describe the increasingly complicated interactions between different cultures under the circumstances of globalization. It is also widely used in international communication and intercultural studies in China, and is often translated into different Chinese concepts such as "跨文化" "超越文化" "转文化". How can we better understand the meaning of this concept in different academic contexts? This paper discovered that this concept was developed as criticism of post-colonialism and that of Western cultural studies reflecting a worldview that is centered on Euro-centrism. The Chinese translation of transculturalism should accordingly vary in different academic discourses. The concept is of great significance to promote cultural equality, cultural connection and respect, cultural exchange and mutual learning. However, cultural competition and western-centrism embedded in Welsch's definition of transculturalism is worthy of attention.
