Abstract:There have been confusions on the conception of accent and stress in the academic circles as well as in practice.It is also a complex problem in metrics that has never been addressed academically.This paper redefines accent and stress from the perspective of metrics,simultaneously incorporating phonetic and semantic theories therein.Accent refers to the objective,phonologically highlighted syllable of a word,whereas stress refers to the subjective,high-pitched part of a poetic line.Therefore,accent is a phonetic term,and stress a poetic one.This differentiation theoretically clarifies the two concepts,marking the first attempt in and outside China to distinguish and define them in a poetic sense.

Abstract:Restricted by prosody hierarchy and disturbed by tone and intonation,it is a hard task to detect the stress of Chinese speech automatically.In this paper, aiming at automatic stress perception in normal mandarin reading speech,we studied some acoustical measurements based on F0,duration and intensity and proposed a novel model to calculate the stress of each syllable.With a structure of classify tree,the model combined the restriction of tone context and prosody hierarchy effectively.It was shown from the result that the top line of pitch,pitch range,duration are important cues for stress perception.The model we developed can detect 80% accent syllable from corpus.
Influence of Rhythm and Tone Pattern on Mandarin Stress Perception in Continuous Speech

Abstract:As a tonal language,Mandarin stresses are closely related to tone,intonation and rhythm levels in continuous speech.Mandarin word stresses were analyzed in terms of rhythm level and tone pattern based on a large continuous speech corpus built for speech synthesis.The results show that the perceptual stress differences on the different rhythms and tone patterns have obvious regularities.1） The syllable duration gets longer and the pitch goes higher when stressed as its rhythm increases,with the pitch having a greater impact on stress perception.2） Stress perception is influenced more by duration in a conflicting tone pattern context than in a compatible tone pattern.3） There is no significant stability in disyllabic stress patterns.

Abstract:English is a typical stress-timed language.Stress is the main phonetic means to distinguish meanings.Chinese is a typical syllable-timed language with tones fixed to each syllable to distinguish meanings.As a result,the huge distinction between the two languages causes great obstacles for Chinese learners to acquire idiomatic English.This paper aims to find out misuses of Chinese learners' stress patterns of English based on the read-aloud data by 30 Chinese university students and 10 American university students.It is found that native speakers employ exactly the same stress pattern in a tone group with an unmarked nucleus while learners always assign extra stresses.When it comes to a tone group with a marked nucleus,the majority of native speakers are still in accordance with each other except several cases of accent displacement while the learners' stress patterns are in a mess ranging from deviations of nucleus,extra stresses to omission of stresses.The research has certain value in acquiring correct English stress patterns.

Abstract:Stress is an important property of English spoken words. Research conducted over the past 70 years has sought to determine how acoustic cues, including duration, pitch, and intensity influence stress perception; however, the evidence remains conflicting. In the present study, we used a large dataset of 10 speakers' productions of disyllabic nonwords to investigate how listeners make use of these cues to perceive stress. Over 100 listeners made stress judgements on nearly one thousand items each, yielding a total of nearly 75,000 analysable responses. Results of average performance showed that stress judgments were influenced by all three cues, both individually and in combination. However, the relative importance of any one cue depended on the value of the other cues, particularly in the frequent situations in which cues offered conflicting stress information. Results of individual performance showed that listeners often use the same acoustic information regarding stress in different ways, but that speakers also sometimes offer different information about stress. Our mega-study approach to investigating word-stress perception eclipses previous studies in terms of its power, and offers new insights into our understanding of how listeners perceive stress.

Abstract:Expressive speech synthesis has recently received much attention. Stress (or pitch accent) is the perceptual prominence within words or utterances, and is one important feature in forming the highs and lows of the pitch contour, which makes the speech sounds more expressive. In this chapter, we introduce a large-scale stress annotated continuous Mandarin corpus. Then the stress distribution and its stability are thoroughly analyzed from aspects of rhythm level and tone pattern. Based on these results, we propose a novel hierarchical Mandarin stress modeling method. The top level emphasizes stressed syllables, while the bottom level focuses on unstressed syllables for the first time due to its importance in both naturalness and expressiveness of synthetic speech. We also carried out several experiments to assign the Mandarin stress from textual features by using the classification and regression tree (CART) and maximum entropy (ME) model respectively. The work could be beneficial to speech synthesis systems for generating high natural and expressive speech.

Abstract:Compared to the prosody study in statement-like sentence, little research has been conducted in interrogative sentence, which will definitely improve the naturalness of spoken dialog system. This paper proposes a computational model to assign stress in interrogative sentences using linguistic knowledge. We firstly investigate the interrogative sentences perceptually to label their stress locations and then summarize a series of syntax-stress mapping rules. The dependency syntax is adopted in this work and automatically obtained by Stanford Parser. All the dependency relations in Stanford Parser are studied and stable stress patterns are assigned. Syntax depth is considered as a factor to weight each dependency relation. Finally, the linear superposition of stress score calculated from each dependency relation is assigned to prosodic words. Experiments show that the weighted accuracy of syntax-stress mapping is 74%. A detailed analysis of results is also provided.

Abstract:A perceptual experiment was conducted on the stress of 1,898 Chinese disyllabic words in 300 sentences taken from the Chinese speech corpus of Microsoft Research Asia. The analyses revealed (1) that the perceptual stress location in utterance was influenced by the prosodic boundary where a word stood; (2) that the perceptual stress degree of a syllable was positively correlated with the pitch of the syllable and the duration as well, while the correlation coefficient between the stress degree and the pitch was larger than that between the stress degree and the duration; (3) that the pitch and the duration was not correlated if there was no pause following a word, but weakly and positively correlated if there was a pause; (4) that tone pattern of a syllable showed an effect on stress perception. The results of the experiment indicate that the perceptual characteristics of word stress in utterance are quite different from those in isolated words.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the effects of the sound parameters related to pitch slope on stress perception of Tone 2+Tone 2 disyllabic words.The acoustic parameters of 1 282 Tone 2+Tone 2 disyllabic words taken from a 6 000 sentence stress-labeled corpus are analyzed to identify the F0 changes,the duration differences and the pitch slope differences of the tone-nucleus part between the syllables of disyllabic words,which are shown to be important acoustic correlates of stress perception.These three parameters,especially the F0 changes,play crucial roles in discriminating between initial-syllable-stressed and final-syllable-stressed words.These parameters show different effects when the boundary levels differ,with the dividing line further clarified for different boundary levels.
Cross-linguistic and acoustic-driven effects on multiscale neural synchrony to stress rhythms

Abstract:We investigated how neural oscillations code the hierarchical nature of stress rhythms in speech and how stress processing varies with language experience. By measuring phase synchrony of multilevel EEG-acoustic tracking and intra-brain cross-frequency coupling, we show the encoding of stress involves different neural signatures (delta rhythms = stress foot rate; theta rhythms = syllable rate), is stronger for amplitude vs. duration stress cues, and induces nested delta-theta coherence mirroring the stress-syllable hierarchy in speech. Only native English, but not Mandarin, speakers exhibited enhanced neural entrainment at central stress (2 Hz) and syllable (4 Hz) rates intrinsic to natural English. English individuals with superior cortical-stress tracking capabilities also displayed stronger neural hierarchical coherence, highlighting a nuanced interplay between internal nesting of brain rhythms and external entrainment rooted in language-specific speech rhythms. Our cross-language findings reveal brain-speech synchronization is not purely a "bottom-up" but benefits from "top-down" processing from listeners' language-specific experience.

Abstract:A study was conducted to investigate the placement of stress and its phonetic cues on the American speakers and Mandarin speakers. The study also focused on how learning experience can improve English learner's ability to signal English lexical stress. The study used sixteen native Mandarin speakers from Northern China as participants and assigned them English real-work reading and English-like non real-word reading. The eight participants in the study were inexperienced learners of English and six native English speakers from the US were selected for a control group. The study used 22 real English words differing in stress pattern and 22 non real English words with N/i/N/i+obstruent syllable structure. It was observed that Mandarin speakers can easily detect the pitch difference between stressed and unstressed syllables.

Abstract:In English, written word endings act as probabilistic cues to a word’s lexical stress pattern. Readers are sensitive to these statistical associations between lexical stress and spelling, using word endings’ spellings to guide stress placement when reading isolated words. However, we do not yet know if readers’ use of endings as stress cues extends to the processing of words in connected text. In the present study, we explored this question with adult readers (N = 53). Participants read texts for comprehension while circling a specified target letter. This letter-detection task can speak to the processes involved in reading words, as readers detect fewer letters when lexical access is relatively quick. Adults detected fewer target letters in words whose endings accurately cued their stress patterns than in words whose endings gave misleading cues to stress (d = 0.41). This suggests that adult readers draw on written word endings as cues to stress during the everyday task of reading for comprehension. These findings clarify the scope of word endings’ role as cues to stress in English. En anglais, les terminaisons des mots écrits agissent comme des indices probabilistes de la structure de l’accent lexical d’un mot. Les lecteurs sont sensibles à ces associations statistiques entre l’accent lexical et l’orthographe, et utilisent l’orthographe des fins de mots pour guider le placement de l’accent lorsqu’ils lisent des mots isolés. Cependant, nous ne savons pas encore si l’utilisation par les lecteurs des terminaisons comme indices d’accentuation s’étend au traitement des mots dans un texte cohérent. Dans la présente étude, nous avons exploré cette question avec des lecteurs adultes (N = 53). Les participants devaient lire des textes à des fins de compréhension tout en encerclant une lettre cible spécifique. Cette tâche de détection des lettres peut être révélatrice des processus impliqués dans la lecture des mots, car les lecteurs détectent moins de lettres lorsque l’accès au lexique est relativement rapide. Les adultes ont détecté moins de lettres cibles dans les mots dont la terminaison indiquait avec précision la structure de l’accent que dans les mots dont la terminaison donnait des indications trompeuses de l’accent (d = 0,41). Cela suggère que les lecteurs adultes utilisent les terminaisons des mots écrits comme indices d’accentuation au cours de tâches de lecture quotidiennes à des fins de compréhension. Ces résultats clarifient la portée du rôle des terminaisons de mots en tant qu’indices d’accentuation en anglais.

Abstract:Abstract The use of speech as a digital biomarker to detect stress levels is increasingly gaining attention. Yet, heterogeneous effects of stress on specific acoustic speech features have been observed, possibly due to previous studies’ use of different stress labels/categories and the lack of solid stress induction paradigms or validation of experienced stress. Here, we deployed a controlled, within-subject psychosocial stress induction experiment in which participants received both neutral (control condition) and negative (negative condition) comparative feedback after solving a challenging cognitive task. This study is the first to use a (non-actor) within-participant design that verifies a successful stress induction using both self-report (i.e., decreased reported valence) and physiological measures (i.e., increased heart rate acceleration using event-related cardiac responses during feedback exposure). Analyses of acoustic speech features showed a significant increase in Fundamental Frequency (F0) and Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio (HNR), and a significant decrease in shimmer during the negative feedback condition. Our results using read-out-loud speech comply with earlier research, yet we are the first to validate these results in a well-controlled but ecologically-valid setting to guarantee the generalization of our findings to real-life settings. Further research should aim to replicate these results in a free speech setting to test the robustness of our findings for real-world settings and should include semantics to also take into account what you say and not only how you say it.

Effects of Focal Stress on the Articulatory and Acoustic Properties of Segments in Standard Chinese

Abstract:Summary form only given. The current research studies the effect of focal stress on the articulatory and acoustic properties of segments in Standard Chinese. The narrow focuses of different positions and pragmatic domains were obtained through contrastive emphasis and experimenter's questions for examining the linguopalatal contact and acoustic properties of unaspirated alveolar stop /t/ and monophthongal vowels /i/ and /u/ inside and outside the pragmatic focus domain. Results show that: 1) on-the-focus segments are generally strengthened articulatorily and acoustically. The on-the-focus consonant has significantly larger linguopalatal contact and alveolar seal duration. The vocal fold state during the consonantal closure interval tends to be tense. The tongue gesture of the on-the-focus vowel /i/ is significantly fronted. And the duration, intensity and spectral properties of vowels are significantly changed. 2) The focal stress does not affect the articulation of segments outside the pragmatic focus domain; however, the acoustic properties of vowels outside the domain might be affected but no clear performance is obtained in the current paper.
Stress Annotation in Continuous Speech and Large-Scale Stress Corpus Construction

Abstract:Standard stress annotation is needed for stress studies and speech processing systems.This study provides word stress and sentence stress annotations of a large-scale speech synthesis corpus and summarizes the annotation rules.The stress annotation uses annotation training,normal annotation and corpus construction.The annotation training helps the annotators understand the stress concepts and annotation rules.The word stresses were annotated by comparison of each syllable in the prosodic word,with the ＂stress＂ referred to as the prominence degree.The sentence stress used the breath group as an annotation unit with emphasis on the annotation hierarchy.The annotation work gave a two-level stress annotated corpus which can be used in speech and language processing systems to improve the naturalness of synthesized speech.

Abstract:In English, positions of lexical stress in disyllabic words are associated with word categories; that is, nouns tend to be stressed more often on the first syllable, whereas verbs are more likely to be stressed on the second syllable (i.e. subject (noun) vs. subject (verb)). This phenomenon, which is called the stress typicality effect, has been shown to facilitate word recognition to native English speakers. However, there is little research on whether it also facilitates word recognition to non-native speakers of English, in particular, to English learners with a tonal first language. To fill this research gap, the present study investigated whether the stress typicality effect modulated word recognition in native speakers of Chinese who learned English as a second language. Both visual grammatical classification and lexical decision tasks were administered to ESL learners with intermediate and advanced English proficiency. The results revealed that Chinese intermediate ESL learners were not sensitive to stress typicality in English; however, the advanced learners were. The findings suggest that different performances in stress assignment among Chinese ESL learners were influenced by their English proficiency levels.

When orthography is not enough: The effect of lexical stress in lexical decision

Abstract:Three lexical decision experiments were carried out in Italian, in order to verify if stress dominance (the most frequent stress type) and consistency (the proportion and number of existent words sharing orthographic ending and stress pattern) had an effect on polysyllabic word recognition. Two factors were manipulated: whether the target word carried stress on the penultimate (dominant; "graNIta," "seNIle"-slush, senile) or on the antepenultimate (non-dominant) syllable ("MISsile," "BIbita"-missile, drink), and whether the stress neighborhood was consistent (graNIta, MISsile) or inconsistent (seNIle, BIbita) with the word's stress pattern. In Experiment 1, words were mixed with nonwords sharing the word endings, which made words and nonwords more similar to each other. In Experiment 2, words and nonwords were presented in lists blocked for stress pattern. In Experiment 3, we used a new set of nonwords, which included endings with (stress) ambiguous neighborhoods and/or with a low number of neighbors, and which were overall less similar to words. In all three experiments, there was an advantage for words with penultimate (dominant) stress and no main effect of stress neighborhood. However, the dominant stress advantage decreased in Experiments 2 and 3. Finally, in Experiment 4, the same materials used in Experiment 1 were also used in a reading-aloud task, showing a significant consistency effect but no dominant stress advantage. The influence of stress information in Italian word recognition is discussed.
To stress or not to stress: what can Mandarin pronouns inform us of the accessibility of topic and focus?

Abstract:Referents with a topical or focused status have been shown to be preferable antecedents in real-time resolution of pronouns. However, it remains unclear regarding whether topicality and focus compete for prominence when co-present in the same narrative, and if so, how differential prominence affects prosodic realization of a subsequent pronoun. Building upon the general understanding that stress on pronouns signals an unusual, less accessible interpretation, we take advantage of the conditional bi-clausal construction in conjunction with homophonic 3rd person pronouns in Chinese. We manipulated the information status of two referents that were introduced into a six-clause narrative in succession, specifically (i) Topic and (ii) Focus, and also (iii) the Reference of the Pronoun (either the first or second referent). Our acoustic analyses showed that pronouns were produced with higher F0s when the first referent was topicalized than when it was not topicalized under conditions where the second referent was focused. Pronouns referring back to the first referent were uttered longer when the referent was not topicalized than when it was topicalized. These results suggest accessibility statuses of referents vary dynamically in response to different prominence-lending cues, and these variations can be captured by the prosodic features of a following pronoun.

Abstract:Automatic stress prediction is helpful for both speech synthesis and natural speech understanding. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical Mandarin stress modeling method. The top level emphasizes stressed syllables, while the bottom level focuses on unstressed syllables for the first time due to its importance in both naturalness and expressiveness of synthetic speech. Maximum Entropy model is adopted to predict stress structure from textual features. Experiments show that the modeling method could capture the macro- and micro-characteristics of stress successfully. The F-score of two-level stress predictions are 73.3% and 78.7%, respectively, which are satisfactory compared to other prosody predictions. Index Terms: Text-to-Speech, prosody, stress, Mandarin

Abstract:Stress prediction is a vital factor for both speech synthesis and natural speech understanding. In this paper, we investigate how to improve the performance of Mandarin stress predictor by introducing discourse context features. Two widely accepted statistical methods are employed to evaluate given/new status and informativeness of a word which are two major discourse context features in the stress prediction. Syntactic and other sentence context features are used in the method as well. The machine learning algorithm, Maximum Entropy model, is adopted to predict which syllable will be stressed with the textual features. The experimental result shows that the performance of the predictor with the discourse context features is better than the methods using the sentence features and even close to the methods using both the acoustic and textual features.
