Abstract:A Markov analysis technique was used to calculate reliability measures for safety systems that involve several typical reliability related factors. The calculations in the Markov model are reduced by prior iterative multiplications of the state transition matrix and the best iterative point. The results show that the probability of failure on demand increases as the number of iterations increases. Errors at the best iterative point are only 1%. Therefore, the technique is conservative, safe and accurate. Doubling of the proof test interval degrade safety integrity for one level, so a proper proof test interval is necessary to achieve the required safety integrity level.

Abstract:This paper advanced the solution of Markov state transfer chain to analyze the system reliability. According to the conversion of mutual relations, the paper put forward a method to calculate the life expectancy of top events in Markov quantitative analysis. Afterwards the paper presented the failure mode, failure rate and life expectancy of the top events. Meanwhile, the paper presented the method to calculate probability of important bottom events to top events. Finally the research is verified in the analysis of a city rail traffic automatic train super-vision system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a dynamic security access control model based on system reliability,so as to improve the flexibility of combination among multiple security access control strategies,and to ensure system security and practicality.The model can choose the proper kind of combination among the security access control strategies dynamically in order to deal with different system states and improve the whole system performance.Experimental results prove that this model makes the multiple strategies control more flexible,ensures the system security,and improves practicality of the system.

Abstract:The chapter considers reliability measures for a multistate system where the system and its components can have different performance levels, ranging from perfect functioning tip to complete failure. The general approach is suggested for computation of commonly used reliability measures. According to the approach, the general Markov reward model should be built, so that different reliability measures can be calculated by the corresponding reward matrix determination. A numerical example is presented in order to illustrate this approach.

Abstract:The Safety Computing System is a kind of system which asks for high safety and reliability. In order to rigorously analyze the safety and reliability of the M out of N system, abstracting running states of the system, and constructing a state transition model based on Markov Process. At the same time, the safety and reliability of the M out of N system are calculated on the basis of Markov Model. Finally comparing the M out of N system with the existing safety computing systems based on the computation of the safety and reliability. According to our results, the M out of N system has higher safety and reliability compared to the existing safety computing systems under the same average failure rate of the calculating cell. Especially, the system can satisfy the safety integrity level (SIL) 4, which means the system's probability of catastrophic failure is less than or equal to 10e-8 per hour. So, it can be applied to the high-speed railway systems.

Abstract:The Markov method is a common reliability assessment method. It is often used to describe the dynamic characteristics of a system, such as its repairability, fault sequence and multiple degradation states. However, the "curse of dimensionality", which refers to the exponential growth of the system state space with the increase in system complexity, presents a challenge to reliability assessments for complex systems based on the Markov method. In response to this challenge, a novel reliability assessment method for complex systems based on non-homogeneous Markov processes is proposed. This method entails the decomposition of a complex system into multilevel subsystems, each with a relatively small state space, in accordance with the system function. The homogeneous Markov model or the non-homogeneous Markov model is established for each subsystem/system from bottom to top. In order to utilize the outcomes of the lower-level subsystem models as inputs to the upper-level subsystem model, an algorithm is proposed for converting the unavailability curve of a subsystem into its corresponding 2×2 dynamic state transition probability matrix (STPM). The STPM is then employed as an input to the upper-level system's non-homogeneous Markov model. A case study is presented using the reliability assessment of the Reactor Protection System (RPS) based on the proposed method, which is then compared with the models based on the other two contrast methods. This comparison verifies the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:As the class notation of DP system increases, the states and components of interest rapidly becomes large leading to difficulty in constructing and solving the reliability model. The key point of this paper is innovatively using the Markov modeling method to quantitatively assess the reliability of Class 3 DP control system, although the Markov methodology is not new in reliability analysis. To simplify the Markov process, the target Class 3 DP control system is decomposed into main DP and back-up DP system and the whole system is modeled using Markov models of sub-systems. The failure rate of the whole system can be obtained from the Markov models of two independent subsystems. Finally, the reliability of the whole Class 3 DP control system can be predicted with subsystem failure rates. The results present can be used for reliability-centered design and maintenance of DP control system.

Abstract:In order to improve the reliability and safety of 2-out-of-3 safety computer system,this paper analyzes the different 2-out-of-3 voting models.They use the logic gates as minimal system unit and simplify the original voting model by different logical combinations.By analyzing these models according to Markov modeling method,it calculates the reliability and safety of Special-1 model,Special-2 model,and compares the results with Classic model.Comparison results show that the Mean Time to Failure(MTTF) of designed Special-1 model is higher about 10% than Classic model,and reliability is 0.333.

Abstract:After the release of new international functional safety standards like IEC 61508, people care more for the safety and availability of safety instrumented systems. Markov analysis is a powerful and flexible technique to assess the reliability measurements of safety instrumented systems, but it is fallible and time-consuming to create Markov models manually. This paper presents a new technique to automatically create Markov models for reliability assessment of safety instrumented systems. Many safety related factors, such as failure modes, self-diagnostic, restorations, common cause and voting, are included in Markov models. A framework is generated first based on voting, failure modes and self-diagnostic. Then, repairs and common-cause failures are incorporated into the framework to build a complete Markov model. Eventual simplification of Markov models can be done by state merging. Examples given in this paper show how explosively the size of Markov model increases as the system becomes a little more complicated as well as the advancement of automatic creation of Markov models.

Abstract:Risk assessment as one of the core technologies ensures IT system security. In this paper, the existing risk evaluation methods are briefly reviewed and analyzed. A Markov chain based model is presented to quantitatively evaluate security. Firstly, a model based on Markov chain is constructed to describe IT system behavior. Secondly, a Markov transition matrix is founded to quantitatively assess security risk factors. Finally, the proposed risk assessment methodology is applied on the Internet ticketing system to calculate the risk value for the system. The experiment shows this method is effective and efficient and can be used to quantify the security properties for IT system in practice.

Abstract:This paper presents a fault-tolerant computer system. It is designed as a double 2-out-of-2 architecture based on component redundant technique. Also, a quantitative probabilistic model is presented for evaluating the reliability, availability, maintainability and safety （RAMS） of this architecture. Hierarchical modeling method and Markov modeling method are used in RAMS analysis to evaluate the system characteristics. The double 2-out-of-2 system is compared with the other two systems, all voting triple modular redundancy （AVTMR） system and dual-duplex system. According to the result, the double 2-out-of-2 system has the highest dependability. Especially, the system can satisfy the safety integrity level （SIL） 4, which means the system’s probability of catastrophic failure less than or equal to 10-8 per hour, therefore, it can be applied to life critical systems such as high-speed railway systems.

Abstract:The onboard computer adopted by internal aerospace department is a high dependable tolerant computer system,which was studied by internal researcher. The reliability plays an important role in onboard computer system.In this paper,a new statistical usage testing method of estimating the reliability of onboard computer system was put forward.First,the description method of fault induced states transitions in the Markov chain during testing was improved after analyzing the fault propagation.The condition that "fault not always induces fail" was described in Markov.Second,a probability computing method for execution paths of the program was proposed,which was used to evaluate the reliability of onboard computer system.Last,the validity of computing method was shown in the simulation experiment.In conclusion,testing and evaluating reliability of onboard computing system can reflect reality condition after analyzing the the fault induced states transitions and proposing the computing method of path probability.

Abstract:One limitation of the Markov model is that the exponential growth in the number of states with increase of system complexity weakens the implementability of Markov-based state model construction for complex systems and magnifies the consumption of computational resources. This paper introduces a method for simplification in Markov state-based models for reliability assessment of complex safety systems based on decomposing the target system into independent sub-systems and adopting system-level failure rates of the sub-systems estimated individually by the developed formulas. Using failure rates of the sub-systems, a simplified model of the target system can be built easily. The proposed method was used to construct the simplified model for a typical reactor protection system found in nuclear power plants. The number of states in the simplified model is greatly reduced compared to the full model developed separately. Additionally, the results of the sensitivity analysis show that the deviation of the reliabilities of the system calculated by the simplified model and the full model is not higher than 0.0021% within the range of the model parameters; and the value of the validation metric indicates that the simplified model and the full model are in a high level of agreement.

Abstract:This paper proposes an MINLP model that represents the stochastic process of system failures and repairs as a continuous-time Markov chain, based on which it optimizes the selection of redundancy and the frequency of inspection and maintenance tasks for maximum profit. The model explicitly accounts for every possible state of the system. Effective decomposition and scenario reduction methods are also proposed. A small example with two processing stage is solved to demonstrate the impact of incorporating maintenance considerations. A decomposition method and a scenario reduction method are applied to this example and are shown to drastically reduce the computational effort. A larger example with four stages, which is not directly solvable, is also successfully solved using the proposed algorithm. Lastly, we show that the proposed model and algorithms are capable of solving a practical problem based on the air separation process example that motivated our work, which features multiple stages, potential units and failure modes.

Abstract:In this paper, a multi-state system under dynamic load-sharing strategy is studied. The system is consisting of more than one type of components connected in parallel. The performance rate of the component can be increased or decreased, leading to a change of failure rate. Once any component in the system fails, the performance rate of components will be redistributed based on a dynamic load-sharing strategy. The Markov model is used in this paper to characterize the deterioration process of the system and evaluate the system reliability. The proposed model is demonstrated via a numerical example.

Abstract:Most engineering systems operate under stochastic dynamic environments. The variability and stochasticity of environmental conditions have a non-negligible impact on the failure behavior of engineering systems. This article develops a reliability modeling and assessment framework for systems operating under a Markovian dynamic environment. The stochastic dynamic environment is characterized by a continuous-time Markov chain. Using the cumulative exposure principle, the stochastic time scale, resulting from the cumulative effect of the Markovian dynamic environment, is computed via a Markov reward model. Based on the above settings, the system reliability model under the Markovian dynamic environment is developed. The maximum likelihood estimates and confidence intervals for the model parameters, including the transition rate matrix of the Markov chain, the reward rates of the Markov reward model, and the parameters of the baseline lifetime distribution, are obtained by utilizing the collected environment and lifetime data. The system reliability is then assessed with the estimated parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed framework are validated using simulation and through an application to a long-term storage system. The results show that the unknown reliability model parameters can be accurately estimated, and the proposed model with the consideration of the cumulative effect of the Markovian dynamic environment can provide a more accurate reliability estimate than that without such a consideration.

Abstract:： Multi-state is one of the characteristics of advanced manufacturing systems and complex engineered systems. Multi-state reliability theory has received considerable attentions in recent years as it is able to characterize the complicated deteriorating process of systems in a finer fashion. Nevertheless, the most reported works on multi-state system reliability modelling and assessment are developed on the premise that the failure processes between any pair of components are statistically independent. In engineering practices, dependency among components of a system is inevitable. By using Markov models, a new reliability model for multi-state systems is developed to take account of the load distribution mechanism between components. The relation among the load imposed on components, reliability of the entire system, and system structure is examined. On the basis of the proposed reliability model, a two-stage genetic algorithm is put forth to optimize the dynamic load distribution strategy and system configuration in a joint manner to achieve better system reliability measures.

Abstract:By analyzing the original testing adequacy determination in Markov model,the strict transfer probability is defined and then testing adequacy based on strict transfer probability is advanced.Markov model is transformed to strict Markov model,and the strict transfer probability is used to calculate the differentiation of every edge.The primal transfer probability of all of accessibility discriminative transfer probability is computed for accessibility discriminative transfer set,and then the probability is obtained.Experiments declares that new method is more stabile and efficient.

Abstract:Risk assessment is a very important tool to acquire a present and future security status of the network information system. Many risk assessment approaches consider the present system security status, while the future security status, which also has an impact on assessing the system risk, is not taken into consideration. In this paper we propose a novel risk assessment model based on Markov game theory. In this model, all of the possible risk in the future will impact on the present risk assessment. The farther away from now, the smaller impact on the risk assessment it has. After acquiring the system security status, we proposed an automatic generated reinforcement scheme which will provide a great convenience to the system administrator. A software tool is developed to demonstrate the performance of the risk assessment of a network information system and a simulation example shows the effectiveness of the proposed model. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Traditional Markov reliability model used to predict the total number of errors in the software and the failure interval, but did not consider the impact of the severity of the error. However, in some cases, such as software trustworthiness, we must consider not only the total number of software errors and failure interval, but also consider the severity of the error on the impact of the credibility of software. Both in the traditional reliability studies, to consider the impact of the severity of the error, the cost of software development budget or duration of the forecast is very important. Based on the reliability of the traditional Markov model, we introduce the thought of classification of errors into the traditional model, the availability of a new mathematical model of reliability, the reliability of the Markov model is a special case of the model. Using the new model can predict not only the total number of errors in the software and the failure interval, but also can predict the total number of each type of error and failure types, the test indicates a good accuracy, which is the traditional Markov reliability model can not predict.
