Abstract:The detection of static targets in clutter environments has been an active topic in radar community, which is also a difficult problem, since there is no Doppler information that can be used to distinguish the target from clutter. Aiming at this problem, in this article, we develop an adaptive approach based on frequency diverse array (FDA) radar to enhance the detection performance. First, a parametric measurement model that incorporates the practical dependence of the clutter responses on transmit frequencies is introduced. Then, based on the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) test, an adaptive detector that requires no training data is developed to determine the existence of a target in a specific cell under test, where the scattering features of the target and clutter are assumed unknown. In addition, the detector has the property of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) with respect to the clutter. Moreover, under the criterion of maximizing the detection probability, we propose an adaptive scheme in which the collected data are utilized to select the transmit weights for power allocation to improve the detection. Numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed detector and demonstrate the performance improvement owing to the adaptive power allocation design.

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of marine radar, and particularly those carried on aircraft, the detection of small-sized targets which pose an increasing threat has become one of the main areas of interest. However, by considering an observation chain from an aircraft (such as a drone) in a maritime environment, with the aim of detecting and tracking of low signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) targets, one of the important points would be the analysis of the radar system performance according to the radar input parameters, the atmospheric propagation medium, the various sea clutter characterization, and the type of targets (RCS, speed, etc.) in this environment. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain the overall path loss including the anomalous atmospheric environment, gas attenuation, clouds attenuation, rainfall attenuation, and beam scanning loss. To consider atmospheric attenuations, ITU-R models are used. On another side, because of spikes and dynamic variation properties, sea clutter is generally described by the statistical distribution with long tail and by its wider Doppler spectrum. Conventional algorithms such as those based on statistical models, MTI, and MTD processing are often limited, especially for the target of low speed and low RCS. Therefore, sea clutter, including empirical and statistical models available, is considered to estimate and simulate the impact of radar input parameters, targets RCS, and sea state on detection performance. The Doppler frequency of target echo which can be exploited for coherent processing is described by assuming an adequate scenario of observation geometry.

Abstract:To deal with the difficulty in radar signal processing,effective and efficient detection of low-observable targets in complex environments is an ongoing research hotspot.On the one hand,due to strong clutter and complex motion of a target,the signal may be extremely weak such that it is hard to detect the signal either in time domain or in frequency domain.On the other hand,the signal resources of traditional radar are limited and cannot achieve refined description of the target itself.Therefore,it is urgent to develop new system and technology for radar target detection.In this paper,we firstly summarize the main difficulties for low-observable target detection.Then,we systematically review conventional radar moving target detection methods.Finally,we discuss the future development from the perspective of detection techniques and systems.

Abstract:For air moving target indication (AMTI) in nadir region, due to the fact that a spaceborne radar beam can illuminate the top of fuselage, the target radar cross Section is usually high, which is beneficial for the detection of a low-observable target. However, due to the short slant range, specular reflection effect, and relatively low radar ground resolution, the power of clutter component from nadir region is comparatively high, leading to the insufficient clutter suppression and the degradation of target detection performance. Fortunately, when an air moving target is adequately high, the target echo can be separated from the main clutter echoes due to a shorter time delay, making it possible to be only mixed with low-power ambiguous clutter echoes. Based on these considerations, this letter analyzes the performance of AMTI in nadir region for a spaceborne surveillance radar system. It analyzes the target minimum detectable velocities with different target heights and beam center elevation angles. Also, an effective sample selection method based on adaptive range segmentation is proposed to solve the power heterogeneity issue between the main clutter area and the range ambiguous clutter area. As a conclusion, the larger the elevation angle of an air moving target is, the higher the minimum target detectable height is.

Abstract:Considering the improvement of radar resolution and some problems in the practical application of adaptive target detection, the target is modelled by subspace, and two detectors are proposed based on GLRT and Wald tests respectively. Finally, the CFAR theory analysis and performance simulation analysis of the detectors are carried out. Detecting distributed targets precisely in homogeneous environments has been a hot topic in radar signal processing. Generally, distributed targets are often modelled with subspace models of unknown coordinates, and clutter is modelled as the complex Gaussian distribution with zero mean and unknown covariance matrix, while covariance matrix is estimated with a set of training data without the target signal. However, in practice, the complexity of the external environment makes the training data that satisfy the condition of independent homogeneous distribution less available. Therefore, it is assumed that the covariance matrix of the clutter is persymmetric structure and the approach of dimensionality reduction using subspace transformations is introduced, two detectors based upon generalised likelihood ratio test criterion and Wald test criterion in homogeneous environments are proposed. Theoretical analyses indicate the constant false alarm rate characteristics of the two proposed detectors for unknown clutter covariance matrices. Simulation analyses indicate that the proposed detector works well even with fewer training data samples, and its detection performance outperforms that of existing contrast detectors.

Abstract:Three possible ways for clutter suppression in airborne radar are discussed, and typical processing approaches are analyzed and compared. It is demonstrated that utilizing priori knowledge of clutter distribution and ultralow-sidelobe narrow-band Doppler filtering are two important ways to simplify the two-dimensional processing. In addition, the effects of array errors on performance of these approaches are analyzed. Finally, simulation results, which lend support to the analysis, are presented.<>

Abstract:Stationary ground clutter can present a significant challenge for radar detection of moving targets particularly for low altitude slow moving small targets such as drones. In urban environments, clutter returns from collections of man-made structures can cause obscuration and introduce multipath that can interfere with the echoes of the targets of interest. Furthermore, phase noise in the presence of strong stationary clutter can lead to masking weaker signals from slow moving objects such as small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). This work focused on the analysis of urban clutter in the Birmingham area using two L-band staring radars to provide detailed characterization of clutter of a dense urban environment. Clutter maps are generated at various Doppler frequencies to understand the impact on target signal-to-noise ratio as a result of strong ground clutter. This work will provide a basis for establishing radar sensitivity against low observable targets in built up areas.

High Resolution Radar Target Adaptive Detector and Performance Assessment

Abstract:The high resolution radar target detection is addressed in the non-Gaussian clutter. An adaptive detector is derived for range-spread target based on a novel covariance matrix estimator. It is proved that the new detector is constant false alarm rate （CFAR） to both of the clutter covariance matrix structure and power level theoretically for match cases. The simulation results show that the new detector is almost CFAR for mismatch cases, and it outperforms the existing adaptive detector based on the sample covariance matrix. It also shows that the detection performance improves, as the number of pulses, the number of secondary data or the clutter spike increases. In addition, the derived detector is robust to different subsets, estimated clutter group sizes and correlations of clutter. Importantly, the number of iterations for practical application is just one.

Abstract:Target detection, especially in heterogeneous environments with strong clutter, is a difficult problem in signal processing. The existence of strong clutter in the heterogeneous environment usually causes the estimate of the clutter covariance matrix (CCM) to deviate from the truth, resulting in a degradation in detection performance. To address this problem, a novel CCM estimate method based on heterogeneous clutter clustering is proposed to improve the performance of radar detectors. First, it uses the distribution characteristics of clutter samples on the Hermitian positive-definite (HPD) manifold to segregate the clutter into clusters and select representative samples. Second, based on the cluster centers, a covariance matrix that can enhance the discrimination between the target echo and clutter on the HPD manifold is constructed. The proposed method can effectively enhance the discrimination between target and clutter because the reconstructed covariance matrix can reflect the clutter characteristics better. The advantage of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results on both simulated and real data. Compared with the conventional CCM estimation method based on the Log-Euclidean (LE) mean, the proposed method can improve the detection probability by 29%.

Abstract:The clutter characteristics of the linear sparse array radar were investigated to develop the conditions to relax the clutter spread.An accurate estimate on the rank of the clutter covariance matrix(termed as clutter rank) is introduced and the lower bound is obtained.The clutter ridges on angle-Doppler spectrum were also investigated,and a condition to reduce the clutter spectrum spread as well as to eliminate the Doppler blind zones was developed.This condition,which also gives the lower bound of the clutter rank,effectively alleviates the clutter spread,and can be used to guide system designs.
Target Detection in sea clutter Based on Wasserstein Distance

Abstract:It is a challenging problem for sea surface surveillance radar to detect small floating targets. The electromagnetic scattering properties of targets are different from those of sea surface, which will change the probability distribution of radar echo amplitude. In this paper, the difference between probability distributions is measured by Wasserstein distance and a target detection method is proposed. The method first calculates the probability density distribution of sea clutter and echoes containing targets. Then, the sea clutter closet to the barycenter of sea clutter probability distribution sample is selected as the reference which minimize the sum of Wasserstein distances from the rest of sea clutter to it. Finally, echoes containing targets and pure sea clutter are distinguished according to the Wasserstein distance between each distributions to reference distribution. Since the calculation of barycenter is cumbersome, a fast method is proposed by analogy with sloving the distribution closet to barycenter of Gaussian distribution sample whose Wasserstein distance has analytic expression. The experiments with IPIX radar data show that the proposed target detector has excellent detection ability for small floating targets on the sea surface.

Abstract:Severe clutter existing in airborne and spaceborne radar systems makes the moving target indication (MTI) mission a big challenge. To suppress the clutter effectively, the rank of clutter covariance matrix (termed as clutter rank) should be well understood. In dense array radar systems, it is found that the clutter rank can be estimated by the bandwidth-aperture product. This methodology is also applicable to sparse array radars, as long as the effective length of the equivalent array is correctly computed. In this paper, a general formula is presented to estimate the clutter rank of the system using linear arrays, and sequentially, the sufficient condition of full-rank clutter is given. The simulation shows that the general formula is accurate in various circumstances. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Randomized stepped-frequency (RSF) radar, which transmits random-frequency pulses in a coherent processing interval (CPI), has an excellent electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) performance and the ability to synthesize wide-frequency band with a narrow bandwidth receiver. However, due to the use of different frequency pulses, RSF waveform is incompatible with the conventional moving-target-detection (MTD) technique, which makes clutter suppression a difficult problem for RSF radar and limits its application. In this article, the effect of clutter on the coherent processing for RSF radar is first analyzed. The result shows that coherent processing can improve the signal-to-clutter ratio on target Doppler channel by $N$ (number of pulses in one CPI) times, which suppresses weak clutter scatterers to a large extent whilst strong clutter scatterers would still be left influential. Focusing on dominant clutter scatterers, the adaptive range-Doppler clutter suppression algorithm, which is based on designing clutter suppression filters with two-dimensional property to obtain the clear high-range-resolution profile of moving target in clutter environment, is then proposed for RSF radar. The proposed algorithm, which takes into account clutter Doppler extension, can be used for RSF radar coherent processing in clutter environment.

Abstract:Caused by the platform movement, slowly moving targets on the ground will be hidden by the stationary clutter in the Doppler domain for an airborne passive radar system. In this paper, the signal model of airborne passive radar used for ground moving target indication purpose is established at first. Then, the space–time adaptive processing technique is adopted to suppress the strong clutter. Because of the poorer range resolution than active radar, independently and identically distributed training range cells are more difficult to obtain for passive radar. To address this problem, the sparsity of clutter in the space–time domain is exploited and a jointly sparse matrix recovery model is introduced. Furthermore, a parameter-searched two-dimensional multiple measurement vectors based orthogonal matching pursuit (MOMP) algorithm is proposed to solve the off-grid (basis mismatch) problem and reduce the computational complexity at the same time, and thus to more accurately and effectively estimate the clutter covariance matrix. Simulation results with digital TV signal as the illuminator source are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to determine the Doppler frequency, spatial frequency, and relative bistatic range of the moving targets on the ground.

Abstract:The geometry of every bistatic airborne radar configuration is analysed.A clutter mode with the variable azimuth angle and bistatic range is presented.A formula for calculating the Doppler frequency of receiving clutter in any bistatic configuration is deduced.It is an efficient tool for bistatic clutter analysis.And then a STAP approach to compensating the angle-Doppler difference of mainlobe clutter according to every ambiguous range apart is proposed.The problem of bistatic clutter suppression is solved perfectly.

Abstract:It is challenging to detect small-floating object in the sea clutter for a surface radar. In this paper, we have observed that the backscatters from the target brake the continuity of the underlying motion of the sea surface in the time-Doppler spectra (TDS) images. Following this visual clue, we exploit the local binary pattern (LBP) to measure the variations of texture in the TDS images. It is shown that the radar returns containing target and those only having clutter are separable in the feature space of LBP. An unsupervised one-class support vector machine (SVM) is then utilized to detect the deviation of the LBP histogram of the clutter. The outiler of the detector is classified as the target. In the real-life IPIX radar data sets, our visual feature based detector shows favorable detection rate compared to other three existing approaches.

Abstract:Detection of floating small targets in sea clutter is a challenging problem for maritime surveillance radar. For sea-surface floating targets without regular movement, it is hard for traditional model-based methods to achieve satisfying performance. Considering that the radar echoes will exhibit stronger statistical correlations when the target is present, this work proposes a detector using mean spectral radius (MSR), which is a data-driven method based on the eigenvalue analysis of a random matrix. It is first illustrated that the inner radius of the first-order autoregressive model will decrease with the increase of data correlations when the outer radius is normalized. The spectral radius of the target echo distributes on a smaller value compared with sea clutter due to stronger statistical correlations. The MSR, which is defined to be a specific linear spectral statistics indicating data correlations, is demonstrated to be an effective test statistic to distinguish the target echo from sea clutter. It is shown that by the central limit theorem (CLT), the MSR follows a Gaussian distribution. Experiments on Intelligent PIXel Processing Radar (IPIX) datasets show that the proposed method can effectively improve the detection performance. In addition, the MSR can be applied to construct multiple-feature-based detector to further enhance robustness.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar plays a vital role in a wide range of applications such as security surveillance and environmental monitoring. This work investigates target detection with radar point cloud measurements in the slow-motion scenario. In contrast to the existing spatial domain clustering-based target detection methods, we adopt a recursive spatial-temporal clustering (STC)-based method to detect targets in the spatial and temporal domains jointly. Specifically, the points belonging to targets are obtained by clustering with a distance metric defined in the spatial-temporal domain. In addition, to ensure the feasibility of the proposed method for practical real-time implementation, a speed-up scheme that intends to reduce the computational complexity induced by clustering in both spatial and temporal dimensions is developed. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed recursive STC-based method through experimental mmWave radar point cloud data where multiple people walk simultaneously in an open space. The proposed method achieves decent target detection performance improvement compared to a widely-used clustering method for target detection while its computation time is negligible compared to radar data reception time.

Abstract:Adaptive spatial-temporal processing techniques have been widely applied to suppressing clutter and interference in airborne radar. However, it is pointed out that the clutter received by low PRF heliborne radar has many traits different from that received by AEW radar. A new approach called the adaptive beamformer-DPCA cascade processing is proposed, and the detection performance is compared with the current approaches. It is shown that the new approach can suboptimally suppress clutter and interference, improve the detection ability of slowly moving targets, and also provide compensation for multi-dimensional platform drift, while saving considerable computations compared with optimal filtering.

Abstract:Adaptive detection of wideband radar targets embedded in homogeneous Gaussian clutter is discussed, by utilizing the persymmetric clutter covariance matrix. Relying on the decision schemes of the one-step and two-step generalized likelihood ratio tests, two adaptive persymmetric detectors are introduced to mitigate the demanding requirement of secondary data. The performance assessment conducted by Monte Carlo simulation confirms their constant false alarm rate properties. And the simulation results furthermore shows that, both aforementioned persymmetric detectors can effectively avoid the collapsing loss resulted from no target scattering in some of the range cells under test.
