Abstract:Objective: To explore the effective methods to decrease the induced abortion rate among female floating population in large cities. Methods:A community based intervention study was carried out in two towns of Minhang District, Shanghai, China. The present residence based intervention integrate family planning management, education and service providing for floating population. The major results are on the knowledge, attitude and practice of emergency contraception (EC). A total of 518 subjects in experiment group and 336 in control group were investigated before intervention, and 440 in experimen group tou and 263 in control group were surveyed after intervention .Results:Before intervention, only 9.46% of experiment group and 7.74% of control group knew EC; while after intervention, this proportion was 44.77% and 12.93%, respectively. After intervention, more subjects inclined to use EC if necessary or agreed to expand the use of EC as compared with the subjects before intervention. The result of multiple Logistic regression analysis showed that after intervention the experiment group had a higher awareness of EC, tendency to use EC and inclination to expand EC use; the odds ratios were 9.788, 2.094 and 1.871 respectively. Conclusion:The present residence based intervention that integrated family planning management, education and service providing can largely promote the awareness of EC, the tendency to use EC and the inclination to expand EC use in the urban migrants. It may also be helpful to decrease the unwanted pregnancy and subsequeutly, decrease the induced abortion rate in migrants.
