Abstract:Optical Code GMPLS (OC-GMPLS) networks have higher resource utilization for its higher switching granularity. A new 2-D optical code is generated by using optical CDMA as a labeling mechanism. A reference architecture performing labeling switching based on optical CDMA is provided and error probability ratio caused by multi-user interference is analyzed in such a system. Found is the theoretical relation between labeling switching network and the cardinality of the new 2-D optical code. The simulation and analysis results show that this new 2-D code can extend label space and increase the number of users, as well as enhance the utilization rate by multi-using wavelength.
Analysis of Optical-code-based Label Scalability

Abstract:GMPLS networks based on optical code(OC-GMPLS)which utilizes OCDM technologies,devides the label granularity of MPλS networks and expands the label space.2-dimension optical code adds a free dimension,which expands the label scalability.A new method for analyzing the label scalability of MPλS and OC-GMPLS is proposed.Meanwhile,a performance comparison on label scalability between two kinds of 2-dimension codes was carried out.Simulation results show that OC-GMPLS greatly extends the label scalability and a proper selection of coding pattern has a significant effect on expanding the label space.

Abstract:We will focus on the novel applications of optical code-base MPLS, so-called OC-MPLS to demonstrate its versatile capability. The OC-photonic label can be used as an identifier of the packet or flow encapsulated in an optical frame. The OC-photonic label is an optical code consisting of a sequence of optical chip pulses, and its recognition is performed based upon ultrafast time-domain optical correlation. The main application is to the label switched path (LSP) switching, but the other applications include IP packet routing as well as flow classification for supporting QoS capabilities. In the optical implementations, two types of match algorithms of OC-photonic labels such as exact match for the LSP and flow classification as well as longest prefix match for II’ packet routing are presented. Finally, the exact match, longest prefix match, and classification of optical packet flows will be experimentally demonstrated at the bit rate of 10Gb/s.

Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.
Architecture Design and Performance Evaluation of Multigranularity Optical Networks Based on Optical Code Division Multiplexing

Abstract:In traditional lambda-based multigranularity optical networks, a lambda is always treated as the basic routing unit, resulting in low wavelength utilization. On the basis of optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) technology, a novel OCDM-based multigranularity optical cross-connect (MG-OXC) is proposed. Compared with the traditional lambda-based MG-OXC, its switching capability has been extended to support fiber switching, waveband switching, lambda switching, and OCDM switching. In a network composed of OCDM-based MG-OXCs, a single wavelength can be shared by distinct label switched paths (LSPs) called OCDM-LSPs, and OCDM-LSP switching can be implemented in the optical domain. To improve the network flexibility for an OCDM-LSP provisioning, two kinds of switches enabling hybrid optical code (OC) - wavelength conversion are designed. Simulation results indicate that a blocking probability reduction of 2 orders can be obtained by deploying only five OCs to a single wavelength. Furthermore, compared with time-division-multiplexing LSP (TDM-LSP), owing to the asynchronous accessibility and the OC conversion, OCDM-LSPs have been shown to permit a simpler switch architecture and achieve better blocking performance than TDM-LSPs. Abstract:The theory optical logic coder based on multimode interference self-imaging principle is demonstrated.We concretely design a 1-D 2~3 bit optical logic coder using partial phase modulation method.According to beam propagation method,the simulation results obtained by Beamprop software are discussed and some input parameters are optimized.Different modulation methods produce different Boolean logic states with the extinction ratio higher than 11 dB.

Abstract:In a conventional wavelength-routed network, the bandwidth of one wavelength is considered as the minimum granularity for a given connection request. Therefore, no multiple connection requests can be accepted by using a single wavelength simultaneously. This may cause inefficiency in the bandwidth utilization in some cases. In this paper, the focus is on the variable-bandwidth approach called an optical code (OC)-based path to improve this bandwidth utilization. The concept of OC-enabling paths is investigated, which shows its potential in resolving the above granularity problem inherent to the wavelength-routed network. First, two optical paths, called the OC-labeled and OC division multiplexing (OCDM) paths, are proposed. The former is based upon label switching and statistical multiplexing, while the latter is based upon OCDM. Next, OC-label and OCDM optical cross connects are described to support OC-labeled and OCDM paths, respectively. In this paper, a coherent time-spread OC is adopted. A two-state flow-fluid traffic model is addressed and regarded as the general analysis model. Finally, the performances between these proposed paths are qualified and compared, and numerical results show that the OC-labeled path outperforms the OCDM path under short burst duration time, whereas the OCDM path, provides higher flexibility than the OC-labeled path, owing to its independence of burst duration time

Abstract:A new family of two-dimensional optical orthogonal code (2-D OOC), one-coincidence frequency hop code (OCFHC)/OOC, which employs OCFHC and OOC as wavelength-hopping and time-spreading patterns, respectively, is proposed in this paper. In contrary to previously constructed 2-D OOCs, OCFHC/OOC provides more choices on the number of available wavelengths and its cardinality achieves the upper bound in theory without sacrificing good auto-and-cross correlation properties, i.e., the correlation properties of the code is still ideal. Meanwhile, we utilize a new method, called effective normalized throughput, to compare the performance of diverse codes applicable to optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems besides conventional measure bit error rate, and the results indicate that our code performs better than obtained OCDMA codes and is truly applicable to OCDMA networks as multiaccess codes and will greatly facilitate the implementation of OCDMA access networks.

Abstract:Parallel-to-cascading optical code (OC) label processing based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With this technique, the length of the multibit OC label is the same as that of the one-bit OC label; only one encoder and one decoder are needed for the multibit OC label's generation and recognition; the relatively low-speed recognition patterns also reduce the complexity of generating the control signal. The experimental results show that both the ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak (ACP/CCP) and the ratio of ACP to maximum autocorrelation wing are higher than 8 dB in the multibit label's decoded signal, so the parallel-to-cascading OC label processing is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:Multi-granularity switching in optical layer has gain significant importance due to the reduction of size and cost of the optical cross-connect. In this paper, we propose a novel structure of MG-OXC, named two-layer MG-OXC, and also give a new graph model for describing the function of the all kinds of MG-OXC. The network states can be represented completely through our auxiliary graph. In such an auxiliary graph, the optical tunnel allocation in multi-granularity switching network is reduced to the min-cost path rind problem, and different traffic grooming policies can be archived simultaneously. We compare the performance of the two-layer MG-OXC to the normal three-layer MG-OXC and single-layer MG-OXC by the algorithm we proposed through simulation, and conclude that the novel MG-OXC can get very close performance to three-layer MG-OXC but smaller size of switching matrix. The simulation also proved the algorithms we proposed performs better than traditional RWA algorithms dealing the routing and wavelength sub problems separately.

Abstract:With the drastic increasing of data traffic, the optical transport network will be adjusted to be services-oriented networks. Its traffic engineering system should be able to dynamically react to traffic changes while at the same time fulfilling QoS requirements for different classes of service. So the next generation optical network will handle priority, preemption mechanisms, and traffic rerouting in order to concurrently accommodate the largest amount of traffic. At the same time, transport networks need to evolve so as to drastically reduce both deployment costs and operating expenses. One of a reasonable strategy to achieve the goals is to simplify the network architecture by reducing the number of layers. GMPLS protocols enable the coordination between the IP and the optical layers and provide classified services. The collaboration of both layers in the routing process leads to optimization of network performance. Simulation results show the results of different strategy for resource allocation.

Abstract:Code-division multiple-access (CDMA) has flourished as a successful wireless networking technology in mobile cellular telephony, and wireless local area networks (LAN) such as the unlicensed industry, science, and medicine (ISM) bands. The commercial exploitation of the benefits of CDMA raises the question as to whether optical code-based communications offer significant benefits to an optical network and what are the technologies that enable code-based optical networks. Recent investigations of optical CDMA (OCDMA) strategies have addressed this question through numerous laboratory-based test-bed studies of multiuser link and recent experimental field trials conducted on in-the-ground fiber. OCDMA requires its own physical layer technologies that are distinctly different from widely pursued wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) all-optical networks. Simulations of multiuser performance predict ultimate link capacity and the performance of broadcast and select synchronous nets with strong central management as well as asynchronous architectures with reduced centralized management.

Abstract:An examination is made of fiber-optic code-division multiple-access (FO-CDMA), a technique in which low information data rates are mapped into very-high-rate address codes (signature sequences) for the purpose of achieving random, asynchronous communications free of network control, among many users. The need for a special class of signature sequences to achieve the multiple-access capability using fiber-optic signal processing techniques is discussed. A class of signature sequences called optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) that provide the auto- and cross-correlation properties required for FO-CDMA is introduced and used in an experiment to show the principles of FO-CDMA. The experiment demonstrates the auto- and cross-correlation properties of the codes. The concept of optical disk patterns, an equivalent way of representing the OOCs, is introduced. The patterns are used to derive the probability density functions associated with any two interfering OOCs. A detailed study of different interference patterns is presented, and the strongest and the weakest interference patterns are determined.<>

A Study of Applications for Optical Circuit-switched Networks Approval Sheet

Abstract:The networking community has made a significant investment in GMPLS networks, which are connection-oriented networks that support dynamic call-by-call bandwidth sharing. Currently, GMPLS switches are call blocking and GMPLS control-plane protocols only support immediate requests for bandwidth. This thesis first addresses the question of suitability for different types of applications for GMPLS networks. Using the Erlang-B formula, we reason that GMPLS networks are well suited for applications in which the required per-circuit bandwidth is on the order of one-hundredth the shared link capacity. Then, we propose two applications for the GMPLS network, CHEETAH, which we have deployed as part of an NSF-sponsored project. The first is a web transfer application, for which we design and implement a software package called WebFT. We integrate the CHEETAH end-host software modules into WebFT to provide deterministic data-transfer services transparently to users. The CHEETAH network provides connection-oriented services in addition to the connectionless service offered by the Internet. This “add-on” design allows the WebFT package to provide normal web access to non–CHEETAH clients through the Internet while simultaneously serving CHEETAH clients on dedicated circuits. The experiments conducted on the CHEETAH testbed show that WebFT can achieve low-variance, end-to-end transfer delays at different circuit rates and low transfer delays when high-speed circuits are possible. The second application is parallel file transfers on CHEETAH. We identify that two factors limit file-transfer throughput on networks with a high bandwidth-delay product: TCP’s congestioncontrol algorithm and end-host limitations. Abstract:In visible light communications (VLCs) relying on intensity-modulation and direct detection (IM/DD), the conversion from electrical signals to optical signals and the limited dynamic range of the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) constitute the fundamental impediments in the way of high-integrity communications, especially when orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is employed. In IM/DD VLCs, only real-valued positive signals are used for signal transmission. However, the Fourier transform of OFDM systems is operated in the complex domain. In order to meet the requirements of the IM/DD VLCs, the complex-to-real conversion is achieved at the cost of reducing the bandwidth efficiency. Moreover, OFDM signals experience a high peak-to-average power ratio; hence, typically clipping is used for confining the positive-valued signals within the LED's dynamic range. However, hard clipping leads to the loss of orthogonality for optical OFDM (O-OFDM) signals, generating inter-carrier interference. As a result, the performance of the clipping-based O-OFDM systems may be severely degraded. In this paper, the concept of piecewise companding transform (CT) is introduced into the O-OFDM system advocated, forming the CTO-OFDM arrangement. We first investigate the general principles and design criteria of the piecewise CTO-OFDM. Based on our studies, three types of piecewise companders, namely, the constant probability sub-distribution function, linear PsDF (LPsDF), and the non-LPsDF-based CT, are designed. Furthermore, we investigate the nonlinear effect of hard clipping and of our CT on O-OFDM systems in the context of different scenarios by both analytical and simulation techniques. Our investigations show that the CTO-OFDM constitutes a promising signaling scheme conceived for VLCs, which exhibits a high bandwidth efficiency, high flexibility, high reliability, as well as a high data-rate, despite experiencing nonlinear distortions.
Performances of Low-density Parity-check Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing in Long Reach and Multi-mode Fiber Access Networks

Abstract:The systems of optical OFDM high-speed transmission over single-mode fiber and multimode access network by employing the long LDPC coding technique were investigated.The dispersion and frequency selective fading effects of optical fiber link were theoretically analyzed,and the transmission performance of LDPC coded OFDM signals with three different rates in the long-distance transmission and multi-mode fiber access networks through the numerical simulation were compared.Simulation results show that the coded modulation technique of long irregular LDPC coded OFDM with 0.75 coding rate is the most effective for long-distance single mode fiber transmission and multi-mode fiber access networks.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a code-division-multiplexing (CDM) over-fiber passive optical network (COF-PON) system using novel logical operation coding to eliminate multiple access interference (MAI). In this COF-PON system, CDM is accomplished in the frequency domain. At the transmitter, data from each user is encoded with a group of selected subcarriers, and then fed through the fiber. Non-linear effect of the transmission fiber is also considered. This coding method is simple and cost-effective. With the simulation, we tested and compared the Q factor of 1Gb/s and 0.5Gb/s downstream signals, and proved the proposed coding scheme to be feasible. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, a low-density parity check (LDPC) coded GFDM with high-level modulation scheme is proposed for more flexible and advanced multicarrier modulation in intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical systems. Then, we experimentally demonstrate an LDPC-coded GFDM with 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) system transmitted over 20-km standard single-mode fiber at different symbol rates to verify the applicability of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, the proposed scheme with trellis-coded 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (TC-32QAM) has also been investigated and compared with the bit error rate (BER) performance with 16QAM-modulated condition. The results indicate that TC-32QAM-modulated GFDM method has a better performance than the 16QAM-modulated case. But with LDPC coding module added, the performance of the proposed system with TC-32QAM gets worse than that with 16QAM modulation. We also experimentally compare the proposed LDPC-coded scheme and the Turbo-coded scheme in the QAM-modulated GFDM IM/DD optical system. The results show the LDPC-coded optical (LCO-) GFDM scheme has lower power penalties and better BER performance. Moreover, the proposed LCO-GFDM scheme is applied in multiband transmission by optical simulation software, and the results show that multiband LCO-GFDM scheme has a better performance than that of LCO-OFDM scheme.
