Abstract:In 1976, Helleseth conjectured that two binary m-sequences of length 2 m − 1 can not have a three-valued crosscorrelation function when m is a power of 2. We show that this conjecture is true when −1 is a correlation value. In other words, if ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}}$ is the cyclic code of length 2 m − 1 with two zeros α, α k , where α is a primitive element of ${{\mathbb{F}}_{2^m}}$ and gcd(k, 2 m − 1) = 1, then its dual ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}^{\perp}}$ can not have three weights when m is a power of 2.

Abstract:The existence of optimal binary self-dual codes is a long-standing research problem. In this paper, we present some results concerning the decomposition of binary self-dual codes with a dihedral automorphism group D-2p, where p is a prime. These results are applied to construct new self-dual codes with length 78 or 116. We obtain 16 inequivalent self-dual [78, 39, 14] codes, four of which have new weight enumerators. We also show that there are at least 141 inequivalent self-dual [116, 58, 18] codes, most of which are new up to equivalence. Meanwhile, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes. We use these restrictions to exclude some possible weight enumerators of self-dual codes with lengths 74, 76, 82, 98 and 100.
Cyclic and Negacyclic Codes with Optimal and Best Known Minimum Distances

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a new family of distance-optimal binary cyclic codes with the minimum distance $6$ and a new family of distance-optimal quaternary cyclic codes with the minimum distance $4$. We also construct several families of cyclic and negacyclic codes over ${\bf F}_2$, ${\bf F}_3$, ${\bf F}_4$, ${\bf F}_5$, ${\bf F}_7$ and ${\bf F}_9$ with good parameters $n,\,k,\,d$, such that the maximal possible minimum distance $d_{max}$ of a linear $[n, k]_q$ code is at most $d_{max} \leq d+8$. The first codes in these families have optimal or best known minimum distances. $145$ optimal or best known codes are constructed as cyclic codes, negacyclic codes, their shortening codes and punctured codes. All optimal or best known codes constructed in this paper are not equivalent to the presently best known codes. Several infinite families of negacyclic $[n,\frac{n+1}{2}, d]_q$ codes or $[n, \frac{n}{2}, d]_q$ codes, such that their minimum distances satisfy $d\approx O(\frac{n}{\log_q n})$, are also constructed. These are first several families of such negacyclic codes.

Abstract:Negacyclic BCH codes are an important subclass of negacyclic codes and are the best linear codes in most cases, but their parameters are hard to determine. In this paper, we mainly study two types of negacyclic BCH codes of length $n=\frac{q^{m}-1}{4},\frac{q^{m}+1}{4}$, and give their dimensions and the lower bound on their minimum distance. Furthermore, we provide the weight distribution of narrow-sense neagcyclic BCH codes of length $n=\frac{q^m-1}{4}$ for some special designed distances.

Abstract:Recently, binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n,(n\pm1)/2,\geq \sqrt{n}]$ have been a hot topic since their minimum distances have a square-root bound. In this paper, we construct four classes of binary cyclic codes $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{S},0}$, $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{S},1}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{D},0}$, $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{D},1}$ by using two families of sequences, and obtain some codes with parameters $[n,(n\pm1)/2,\geq \sqrt{n}]$. For $m\equiv2\pmod4$, the code $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{S},0}$ has parameters $[2^m-1,2^{m-1},\geq2^{\frac{m}{2}}+2]$, and the code $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{D},0}$ has parameters $[2^m-1,2^{m-1},\geq2^{\frac{m}{2}}+2]$ if $h=1$ and $[2^m-1,2^{m-1},\geq2^{\frac{m}{2}}]$ if $h=2$.

Abstract:Negacyclic BCH codes are an important subclass of negacyclic codes and have good parameters. Inspired by the recent work on cyclic codes published in Wu et al. (Finite Fields Appl 60:101581, 2019), the objective of this paper is to investigate the parameters of the narrow-sense negacyclic BCH codes of length over , where q is an odd prime power. For , the dimension of the narrow-sense negacyclic BCH codes of length n with designed distance is determined. For , a lower bound on the minimum distance of the dual codes of the narrow-sense negacyclic BCH codes of length n with designed distance is presented. Compared with cyclic codes, we obtain some negacyclic BCH codes with better parameters.

Abstract:Irreducible cyclic codes have been an interesting subject of study for many years. The weight distribution of some of them have been determined. We determine the minimum distance and certain weights of the duals of binary irreducible cyclic codes. We show that the weight distribution of these codes is determined by the cyclotomic numbers of certain order. As a byproduct, we describe a class of double-error correcting codes.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an explicit representation and enumeration for negacyclic codes of length \begin{document}$ 2^kn $\end{document} over the local non-principal ideal ring \begin{document}$ R = \mathbb{Z}_4+u\mathbb{Z}_4 $\end{document} \begin{document}$ (u^2 = 0) $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ k, n $\end{document} are arbitrary positive integers and \begin{document}$ n $\end{document} is odd. In particular, we present all distinct negacyclic codes of length \begin{document}$ 2^k $\end{document} over \begin{document}$ R $\end{document} precisely. Moreover, we provide an exact mass formula for the number of negacyclic codes of length \begin{document}$ 2^kn $\end{document} over \begin{document}$ R $\end{document} and correct several mistakes in some literatures.
Self-dual 2-quasi Negacyclic Codes over Finite Fields

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence and asymptotic property of self-dual $2$-quasi negacyclic codes of length $2n$ over a finite field of cardinality $q$. When $n$ is odd, we show that the $q$-ary self-dual $2$-quasi negacyclic codes exist if and only if $q\,{\not\equiv}-\!1~({\rm mod}~4)$. When $n$ is even, we prove that the $q$-ary self-dual $2$-quasi negacyclic codes always exist. By using the technique introduced in this paper, we prove that $q$-ary self-dual $2$-quasi negacyclic codes are asymptotically good.

Abstract:We devise an analytically simple as well as invertible approximate expression, which describes the relation between the minimum distance of a binary code and the corresponding maximum attainable code-rate. For example, for a rate-(1/4), length-256 binary code the best known bounds limit the attainable minimum distance to 65<d(n=256,k=64)<90, while our solution yields d(n=256,k=64)=74.4. The proposed formula attains the approximation accuracy within the rounding error for ~97% of (n,k) scenarios, where the exact value of the minimum distance is known. The results provided may be utilized for the analysis and design of efficient communication systems.

Abstract:The construction of self-dual codes over small fields such that their minimum distances are as large as possible is a long-standing challenging problem in the coding theory. In 2009, a family of binary self-dual cyclic codes with lengths $n_i$ and minimum distances $d_i \geq \frac{1}{2} \sqrt{n_i}$, $n_i$ goes to the infinity for $i=1,2, \ldots$, was constructed. In this paper, we construct a family of (repeated-root) binary self-dual cyclic codes with lengths $n$ and minimum distances at least $\sqrt{n}-2$. New families of lengths $n=q^m-1$, $m=3, 5, \ldots$, self-dual codes over ${\bf F}_q$, $q \equiv 1$ $mod$ $4$, with their minimum distances larger than or equal to $\sqrt{\frac{q}{2}}\sqrt{n}-q$ are also constructed.

Abstract:Cyclic BCH codes and negacyclic BCH codes form important subclasses of cyclic codes and negacyclic codes, respectively, and can produce optimal linear codes in many cases. To the best of our knowledge, there are few results on the dual codes of cyclic and negacyclic BCH codes. In this paper, we study the dual codes of narrow-sense cyclic BCH codes of length $q^m+1$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q$ is an odd prime power, and the dual codes of narrow-sense negacyclic BCH codes of length $\frac{q^{m}+1}{2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q$ is an odd prime power satisfying $q\equiv 3~({\rm mod}~4)$. Some lower bounds on the minimum distances of the dual codes are established, which are very close to the true minimum distances of the dual codes in many cases. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the even-like subcodes of narrow-sense cyclic BCH codes of length $q^{m}+1$ being cyclic dually-BCH codes are given in terms of designed distances, where $q$ is odd and $m$ is odd or $m\equiv 2~({\rm mod~}4)$. The concept of negacyclic dually-BCH codes is proposed, and sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of designed distances are presented to ensure that narrow-sense negacyclic BCH codes of length $\frac{q^{m}+1}{2}$ are dually-BCH codes, where $q\equiv 3~({\rm mod}~4)$.

Abstract:We consider a local non-Frobenius ring defined for each prime number p and study the ideal representation of the ring , which is well-known to be related to negacyclic codes over of length with . We assume that n is a power of p , and under this setting, we show that a specific class of ideals can be represented uniquely in terms of degrees related to its generators. We also give a lower bound of the minimum Hamming distances of negacyclic codes over , and show that the lower bound is sharp for several codes whose corresponding ideals of belong to the aforementioned class.

Abstract:BCH codes have been developed for more than sixty years and are widely used in communication systems and data storage. By the BCH bound, the minimum distance of a BCH code is greater than or equal to its designed distance. Generally, it is very hard to determine the true minimum distances of BCH codes. In 2015, Ding et al (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 61(5): 2351-2356) have proposed the conjecture: Let denote the binary narrow-sense primitive BCH code with designed distance , then the minimum distance of is the Bose distance , for odd . In this paper, to determine the minimum distance of ( is odd), we present an algorithm of finding an idempotent as a minimum-weight codeword, which verifies the correctness of conjecture for odd . Then, by using the trace representations of an idempotent and Mattson-Solomon polynomial, we give the proof of conjecture when by Weil sum, and when by MS polynomial.

Abstract:Computing the minimum distance of a linear code is one of the fundamental problems in algorithmic coding theory. Vardy [1] showed that it is an NP-hard problem for general linear codes. In practice, one often uses codes with additional mathematical structure, such as cyclic codes and algebraic geometry (AG) codes, etc. In this paper, we study the minimum distance of a family of AG codes. For AG codes of genus 0 (generalized Reed-Solomon codes), the minimum distance has a simple explicit formula. An interesting result of Cheng [2] says that the minimum distance problem is already NP-hard (under RP-reduction) for general elliptic curve codes (ECAG codes, or AG codes of genus 1). In this paper, we show that the minimum distance of ECAG codes also has a simple explicit formula if the evaluation set is suitably large (at least 2/3 of the group order). Our method is purely combinatorial and based on a new sieving technique from Li-Wan [3].

Abstract:Constacyclic codes over finite fields are an important class of linear codes as they contain distance-optimal codes and linear codes with best known parameters. They are interesting in theory and practice, as they have the constacyclic structure. In this paper, an infinite class of $q$-ary negacyclic codes of length $(q^m-1)/2$ and an infinite class of $q$-ary constacyclic codes of length $(q^m-1)/(q-1)$ are constructed and analyzed. As a by-product, two infinite classes of ternary negacyclic self-dual codes with a square-root-like lower bound on their minimum distances are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we completely determine the number of solutions to $ \operatorname{Tr}^{q^2}_q(bx+b)+c=0, x\in \mu_{q+1}\backslash \{-1\}$ for all $b\in \mathbb{F}_{q^2}, c\in\mathbb{F}_{q}$. As an application, we can give the weight distributions of a class of linear codes, and give a completely answer to a recent conjecture about a class of NMDS codes proposed by Heng.

Abstract:Binary self-dual cyclic codes have been studied since the classical work of Sloane and Thompson published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 29, 1983. Twenty five years later, an infinite family of binary self-dual cyclic codes with lengths $n_i$ and minimum distances $d_i \geq \frac{1}{2} \sqrt{n_i+2}$ was presented in a paper of IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 55, 2009. However, no infinite family of Euclidean self-dual binary cyclic codes whose minimum distances have the square-root lower bound and no infinite family of Euclidean self-dual nonbinary cyclic codes whose minimum distances have a lower bound better than the square-root lower bound are known in the literature. In this paper, an infinite family of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^s}$ with a square-root-like lower bound is constructed. An infinite subfamily of this family consists of self-dual binary cyclic codes with the square-root lower bound. Another infinite subfamily of this family consists of self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^s}$ with a lower bound better than the square-root bound for $s \geq 2$. Consequently, two breakthroughs in coding theory are made in this paper. An infinite family of self-dual binary cyclic codes with a square-root-like lower bound is also presented in this paper. An infinite family of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes over the fields ${\bf F}_{2^{2s}}$ with a square-root-like lower bound and an infinite family of Euclidean self-dual linear codes over ${\bf F}_{q}$ with $q \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$ with a square-root-like lower bound are also constructed in this paper.

Two classes of reducible cyclic codes with large minimum symbol-pair distances

Abstract:The high-density data storage technology aims to design high-capacity storage at a relatively low cost. In order to achieve this goal, symbol-pair codes were proposed by Cassuto and Blaum \cite{CB10,CB11} to handle channels that output pairs of overlapping symbols. Such a channel is called symbol-pair read channel, which introduce new concept called symbol-pair weight and minimum symbol-pair distance. In this paper, we consider the parameters of two classes of reducible cyclic codes under the symbol-pair metric. Based on the theory of cyclotomic numbers and Gaussian period over finite fields, we show the possible symbol-pair weights of these codes. Their minimum symbol-pair distances are twice the minimum Hamming distances under some conditions. Moreover, we obtain some three symbol-pair weight codes and determine their symbol-pair weight distribution. A class of MDS symbol-pair codes is also established. Among other results, we determine the values of some generalized cyclotomic numbers.

Abstract:The theory of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) is a generalization of the standard stabilizer quantum error-correcting codes, which can be possibly constructed from any classical codes by relaxing the duality condition and utilizing preshared entanglement between the sender and receiver. In this paper, a new family of EAQECCs is constructed from negacyclic codes of length $n=\frac{q^2+1}{a}$, where $q$ is an odd prime power, $a=\frac{m^2+1}{2}$ and $m$ is an odd integer. Some new entanglement-assisted quantum maximum distance separable (EAQMDS) codes are obtained in the sense that their parameters are not covered by the previously known ones.
