Abstract:The loss of signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) due to analog-to-digital converter(ADC) is an important issue that impacts the performance of a digital receiver.According to the mechanism of ADC quantization error,a noise expression which depends both on the number of bits and on the amplitude factor(the ratio of the saturation level of the converter and the input level) is derived,and thus optimal amplitude factors are obtained under different numbers of bits.For the situation in the presence of interference,the output SNR is computed as a function of input SNR,number of bits as well as interference-to-noise ratio.Calculation results show that,when an output SNR of-15 dB is demanded,the quantization bits of 5,7,9 and 10 are minimally required to achieve 30 dB,40 dB,50 dB and 60 dB anti-jamming capability respectively(i.e.less than 1 dB SNR loss due to quantization).

Abstract:For a high-speed and high-resolution current-steering D/A Converter (DAC), Spurious-Free dynamic range (SFDR) becomes a major limiting factor for its performance. This paper gives an overall analysis of its dynamic error due to non-ideal switching behavior and identifies the link between the 3rd or higher order harmonic distortion and digital encoding scheme for the first time so far as our knowledge. A behavioral model of non-ideal current-steering DAC is developed to estimate its SFDR property. A 12-bit up to 1GS/s transistor-level circuit of current-steering DAC is designed using 0.18 um CMOS Mixed-Signal process. The simulation result demonstrates the validation of the established behavior model.

Abstract:The electronic aperture jitter effect originating from the electronic digitization is investigated in the channel-interleaved photonic analog-to-digital converter (PADC) system. The influence of the electronic aperture jitter to the effective number of bits (ENOB) of the PADC system is extracted and evaluated. According to the theoretical analysis, the electronic aperture jitter can be significantly suppressed by the channel-interleaving scheme. In the experiment, the effect of electronic aperture jitter is measured under different optical-electronic conversion (OEC) bandwidths and channel numbers. It is eventually found that the condition of the OEC bandwidth equaling to the Nyquist frequency of one single channel is critical to optimize the electronic aperture jitter and ENOB.

Abstract:Background:The digital to analog converter (DAC) used in space-borne electronic system is unavoidable to be affected by the radiation, and it is essential to evaluate the DAC performance before formal application. Purpose:This study aims to develop an automatic measurement system of high-accuracy and high-speed for radiation-tolerance evaluation of space-borne D/A converters.Methods:Based on the peripheral component interconnection extensions for instrumentation (PXI), Kelvin (4-wire) method and mean filtering algorithm are applied to accurately monitor the voltage and current of the DAC chip, and a switch matrix configured in software is adopted to automatically switch over measurements of different parameters. Meanwhile the PXI bus synchronization and trigger mode control are used to achieve high-speed response among modular instruments, and the cubic spline algorithm is performed to accurately extract the single event saturated cross section and linear energy transfer threshold.Results:The identified voltage precision is 0.1μV, and the DAC monitoring precision is up to 24 bit. In single event effects evaluation, the monitoring frequency of current variation and register upset are 50 Hz and 100Hz respectively, and for total dose effect evaluation, only 8-s ergodic time are needed to measure all characteristic parameters.Conclusion:The designed measurement system can evaluate the performance of space-born DAC fully automatically and efficiently with high precision, which is a reference solution to such similar research.

Abstract:In order to detect the flaws of large aperture optical components more efficiently and accurately,the paper proposes an optic micro-scattering-imaging detecting system which can recognize defects with micron size.The order of object view field for single aperture is only several millimeters,therefore,in order to examine defects of large aperture optical components,twodimension scanning stage is demanded to image the sub-apertures,and all the sub-apertures should be stitched.When scanning,the error of sub-aperture arrays which is induced by the error of institution would result in the mismatching of pixels at the stitching place,and even the failure of stitching,thus,it would affect the evaluation of defects detecting.Therefore,to make sure the successful synthesis of sub-apertures,this paper carried on analysis to the error which can significantly affect the correct stitching of sub-aperture,and figure out how to reduce the stitching error.

Abstract:Main errors that affect the performance of high-accuracy pipelined A/D converter were analyzed in detail,and the analysis in mathematical expressions was presented.The main error sources are from noise of circuit blocks,constant residue gain error,variant residue gain error and incomplete settling error of amplifiers.Based on the error analysis,methods to determine system design specifications,such as values and scaling factors of sampling capacitors in blocks,and the requirement of gain,bandwidth and slew-rate of amplifiers,were analyzed.

Abstract:Dither and its application in A/D converter are briefly summarized. By analyzing the architecture of subranging flash A/D converter, the author establishes an A/D converter simulation system. In addition, a 12 bit, 65 MHz A/D converter testing system is set up for analyzing. The simulation and real testing results show that dither improves the static frequency dynamic range of high speed and high resolution A/D converters. The effects of dither on ADC are discussed and summarized.

Abstract:In recent years, some approaches to realize photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on spectral encoding have been proposed. In these approaches, the amplitude information of input analog signals is first converted into the frequency information of the optical carrier via a nonlinear process, which is equivalent to optical frequency modulation; then, the spectral information of the optical carrier is quantized and encoded with the help of an optical filter group. In this letter, we propose, for the first time to our knowledge, that the time-frequency uncertainty principle puts a fundamental limit on this type of photonic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The condition for achieving acceptable performance in terms of effective number of bits is discussed. The presented theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations and a proof-of-concept experiment in electrical domain. We believe that the presented result is important to the design of spectral-encoding-based photonic ADCs.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method which analyzing the relationship between the bit-precision of an analog to digital converter (ADC) and the bit error rate (BER) performance in a broadband QAM demodulator. Through analyzing the quantization effect of the ADC on the SNR in the slicer, we get an analytical expression between ADC bit precision and SNR loss. The results of computer simulation match the theoretic analysis fairly well.

Abstract:The problem of matching between a receiving front-end amplifier chain and a digital A/D converter module is explored in details.Then the limit performances of a receiving system sensitivity and dynamic range are analyzed when the front-end amplifier chain and the digital A/D converter module are interconnected.An experimental test results is presented to demonstrate and compare with our deduction values in theory.Several compromising suggestions on choosing the right gain of an amplifier chain and a proper AD converter are given.Some aspects and referential curves on receiving system design are summarized which is used to obtain the required sensitivity and dynamic range within the available performances of the front-end and the digital A/D converter modules.

Abstract:In Σ-Δ A/D converter, analog to digital conversion is carried out by comparing the input signal to a reference voltage. Therefore,any variations of the reference voltage will affect the results of the A/D conversion. In this paper, effects and mechanisms in DC and AC variations are analyzed, respectively. A third-order Σ-Δ A/D converter model is built in Matlab and the results obtained are verified.

Abstract:The recent rapid development of digital UWB wireless communications has led to the need for ultra-high rate A/D converters (ADCs). In this paper, the design algorithms for digital UWB receiver based on A/D conversion in the frequency domain have been presented, which can obviously reduce the ADCs speed requirements compared with conventional time-domain ADC. Important issues in the frequency domain A/D converters, such as quantization noise, optimal bit allocation, are discussed in detail. Frequency domain frame synchronization, channel estimation and demodulation algorithms are also proposed.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the study of the influence of quantization noise on the spectral characteristics of a digital signal and the assessment of spectrum measurement errors that arise due to the quantization noise of an analog-to-digital converter. To achieve more accurate and reliable measurements of the spectrum, an error assessment was carried out, which allows taking into account the impact of quantization noise on the spectral data. This is important for obtaining more accurate results and ensuring high-quality measurements of the spectral components of the vibration signal. In addition, further research is aimed at developing methods for estimating spectrum measurement errors taking into account other possible sources of errors and contributing to the development of compensation algorithms to reduce the impact of quantization noise.

Abstract:A 12-bit 2-GS/s pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) front-end stage in 28 nm process is presented. Sample-and-hold amplifier-less (SHA-less) structure is adopted to avoid additional noise, nonlinearity, and power. Aperture error tuning is presented to mitigate the inherited problem of the SHA-less structure. New split closed-loop multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) structure and 1.2 V dual- input amplifier is used to lower the power and to enhance the speed. Dithering is adopted and comparator threshold voltage dithering is modified for low supply voltage and higher speed. Simulation shows a 66.4 dB signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) and 76.1 dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) under 1.38 GHz input frequency. The wideband input range and the aperture error tunability are proven by the simulation. The 163.8 dB Schreier figure-of-merit (FoM) and 52.2 fJ/conv.-step Walden FoM is achieved based on an assumed 180 mW total power, of which 90 mW is consumed by the front-end stage.

Abstract:We build noise models for analyzing the effect of four main noise terms consisting of the amplitude fluctuation of optical sampling pulse trains, timing jitter of optical sampling pulse trains, quantization and aperture jitter noise of electrical analog to digital converters, and noise in photodiodes on time interleaved photonic analog to digital converters. The analyses indicate that the random processes in the optical sampling pulse train and aperture of electrical analog to digital converters have significant effect on both the unmodulated and modulated components in the sampling results. Both quantization noise of electrical analog to digital converters and noise in photodiodes are unrelated to the optical sampling and can be considered as additive noises. Furthermore, we analyzed digital frequency spectra of different noises after time interleaving. To validate the theoretical model, we conduct the corresponding experiments, indicating the experimental results being consistent with the proposed noise models.

Abstract:The improvement of Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) performance is crucial to improve the data quality of the signal acquisition system. Therefore, based on the dithering technology, combined with the chaotic system, the study designs and analyses a novel method to improve the Spurious-Free dynamic range (SFDR) of the ADC. First, a new five-dimensional chaotic system is proposed in this paper. The chaotic characteristics and dynamic behavior of the new system have been deeply analysed. The analysis methods mainly consist of the Lyapunov exponent, bifurcation diagram, power spectrum and sample entropy. The corresponding simulation model has been developed in Simulink, and the simulation results prove the reality and feasibility of the new chaotic system. Second, the random number homogenization universal algorithm is used to modify the amplitude of the chaotic sequences generated by the new chaotic system. The uniformity and correlation analysis prove that the Dither signal has strong uniformity and randomness. Third, a behaviour-level simulation model of the pipeline ADC is built; then, the narrowband, broadband and different amplitude Dither signals are added to verify the improvement effect for the dynamic performance of the ADC. The experimental results demonstrate that the designed method can improve the SFDR of the ADC by 10.37 dBc, which effectively eliminates the harmonic energy and improves the dynamic performance of the ADC.

Abstract:A method of overlapping output data of analog-to-digital converter(ADC) with the cycle of the input sine wave was described.By processing the data,the influence of input noise and clock jitter on dynamic parameters of ADC can be evaluated.By analyzing the waveform after overlapping,phenomena such as abnormal change,non-monotonic,missing codes,sparkle codes and distortion etc,can also be observed,which occurred in the process of conversion of ADC with high frequency input signals and were difficult to be found and observed from the output data directly.This kind of analysis is significant to the design of A/D converters.The results of the experiment demonstrated that this method is practical and effective.
