Abstract:Recent years, algal polysaccharides were mainly investigated for pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals and biomedical applications due to their promising bioactive properties. Moreover, it is now becoming a potential source for several non-medical and non-food applications in which biofuels are a major sector. The marine algae contain a variety of polysaccharides comprising 15–75% of dry biomass, including mucopolysaccharides, structured as well as storage polysaccharides. Industrial and dietary use of algal polysaccharide is on the rise, having an economic global impact. They have been industrially used as stabilizers, emulsifiers, thickeners, animal feed, foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals among others. Despite its low calorie and fat content, seaweed contains a significant amount of fiber (polysaccharide) that is beneficial to the digestive system. In industries for pharmaceuticals and biomedicine, alginates, fucoidans, ulvans, carrageenans, and chitin are becoming increasingly important. In fact, little research has been conducted on microalgal polysaccharides, linking their chemical structure with their biological activity. Moreover, with breakthrough technologies viable microalgal cultivation and improved carbohydrate production must be developed. Several studies highlighted the recent updates on microalgae, their key challenges in production and characterization of microalgal polysaccharides but lacking connection of chemical structure and functionality. The present review provides a brief summary of the key advances in the feasible production strategies of microalgal polysaccharides to make its extraction economically feasible, review on recent cost-effective extraction and purification methods. Moreover, analyzed structure divergence and tried to correlate their chemical structure with functionality prior to describing its broader potential beyond its existing applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Microalgae represent an untapped resource of mixed polysaccharides with potential applications in biotechnology, therapeutics, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery. There are presently ~160,000 described species of algae and approximately 80% of these are classified as microalgae, including the cyanobacteria. Numerous reviews and research articles can be found on the structural characterization and bioactivity of a variety of polysaccharides derived from seaweeds and kelps, i.e., macroalgae, and many of these compounds are widely used in industry and clinical applications. By comparison, there are relatively few studies on the bioactivity of polysaccharides from microalgae or their potential applications. This chapter will provide an overview of structural and bioactive polysaccharides and related case studies for major groups of microalgae, including the Cyanophyta (cyanobacteria), Chlorophyta (green algae), Rhodophyta (red algae), and selected golden microalgae in the Chromista, e.g., Bacillariophyta, Haptophyta, and Ochrophyta. Many groups of microalgae produce bioactive polysaccharides, including extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and sulfated polysaccharides (SPS) that have demonstrated antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anticancer potential. Microalgal glycans are composed predominantly of pentose, hexose, and deoxyhexose monosaccharide subunits with various glycosidic linkages and degrees of branching. Their bioactivity can often be attributed to the monosaccharide composition, content of uronic acids, molecular weight fraction, and/or degree of modification, e.g., sulfation, amination, acylation, phosphorylation, and methylation. While current studies have been limited to a few species, there are many more microalgae to be explored, providing immense opportunities for metabolite discovery in the field of microalgal polysaccharides and natural products.

Abstract:Microalgae are a major primary producer in the ocean, contributing up to 50% of global primary production. Bioactive compounds from microalgae include carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lutein, and essential fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, have been attractive as natural products for decades. Recently, polysaccharides and their derivatives from marine microalgae have drawn much attention as the biodiversity of microalgae offers great opportunities for discovering novel bioactive compounds. Marine microalgae, including diatoms, are rich sources of sulfated polysaccharides, which have shown antiviral, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiparasitic, and antitumor activities. Although the mechanisms underlying the biological activities of microalgal polysaccharides are not fully understood, their positive effects on the human body are mostly associated with their prebiotic activity. In this review, a variety of microalgae with different types of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides are described. For the screening of bioactive compounds, extraction and purification methods are also introduced to explore the composition and efficacy of polysaccharides in microalgae. Biosynthetic pathways of polysaccharides are summarized, and their biotechnology applications are illustrated accordingly. This chapter demonstrates the biological activities of polysaccharides and their derivatives from microalgae and potential use in human health and other industrial applications. The current challenges in the microalgal polysaccharide field are highlighted. Finally, conclusions and future scope are also provided.

Abstract:Carbohydrates or polysaccharides are the main products derived from photosynthesis and carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle. Compared to other sources, polysaccharides derived from microalgae are safe, biocompatible, biodegradable, stable, and versatile. These polymeric macromolecules present complex biochemical structures according to each microalgal species. In addition, they exhibit emulsifying properties and biological characteristics that include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial activities. Some microalgal species have a naturally high concentration of carbohydrates. Other species can adapt their metabolism to produce more sugars from changes in temperature and light, carbon source, macro and micronutrient limitations (mainly nitrogen), and saline stress. In addition to growing in adverse conditions, microalgae can use industrial effluents as an alternative source of nutrients. Microalgal polysaccharides are predominantly composed of pentose and hexose monosaccharide subunits with many glycosidic bonds. Microalgae polysaccharides can be structural constituents of the cell wall, energy stores, or protective polysaccharides and cell interaction. The industrial use of microalgae polysaccharides is on the rise. These microorganisms present rheological and biological properties, making them a promising candidate for application in the food industry and agriculture. Thus, microalgae polysaccharides are promising sustainable alternatives for potential applications in several sectors, and the choice of producing microalgal species depends on the required functional activity. In this context, this review article aims to provide an overview of microalgae technology for polysaccharide production, emphasizing its potential in the food, animal feed, and agriculture sector.

Abstract:In recent years, the increasing concern about human health well-being has strongly boosted the search for natural alternatives that can be used in different fields, especially in biomedicine. This has put microalgae-based products in evidence since they contain many bioactive compounds, of which polysaccharides are attractive due to the diverse physicochemical properties and new or improved biological roles they play. Polysaccharides from microalgae, specially exopolysaccharides, are critically important for market purposes because they can be used as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-glycemic, antitumor, antioxidant, anticoagulant, antilipidemic, antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agents. Therefore, to obtain higher productivity and competitiveness of these naturally available compounds, the cultivation parameters and the extraction/purification processes must be better optimized in order to bring perspectives for the exploitation of products in commercial and clinical practice. In this sense, the objective of the present review is to elucidate the potential biomedical applications of microalgae-derived polysaccharides. A closer look is taken at the main polysaccharides produced by microalgae, methods of extraction, purification and structural determination, biological activities and their applications, and current status.

Abstract:Microalgae and cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms capable of synthesizing several biocompounds, including polysaccharides with antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. At the same time that the accumulation of biomolecules occurs, microalgae can use wastewater and gaseous effluents for their growth, mitigating these pollutants. The increase in the production of polysaccharides by microalgae can be achieved mainly through nutritional limitations, stressful conditions, and/or adverse conditions. These compounds are of commercial interest due to their biological and rheological properties, which allow their application in various sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and foods. Thus, to increase the productivity and competitiveness of microalgal polysaccharides with commercial hydrocolloids, the cultivation parameters and extraction/purification processes have been optimized. In this context, this review addresses an overview of the production, characterization, and potential applications of polysaccharides obtained by microalgae and cyanobacteria. Moreover, the main opportunities and challenges in relation to obtaining these compounds are highlighted.

Abstract:Polysaccharides are essential macromolecules for living organisms, they are widely found in plants, animals, microorganisms, and algae. However, marine polysaccharides of microalgal origin have gained prominence over the last few years for their variety of applications in food, cosmetics, and especially health. The versatility of its applications is due to the derived complex chemical structures which come from its types of monosaccharide constituent, conformation, and the presence of substituent groups, especially the sulfate group. These facts contribute to the microalgae are promising for polysaccharides production. Some challenges related to extraction, identification, and purification have yet to be overcome, however, microalgae prove to be a potential source for the production of this class of compounds. In this sense, this review presents a comprehensive description of the production of microalgae polysaccharides, aspects related to chemical structure, rheological and functional characteristics, applications, and strategies for determination, in addition to a brief description of the main challenges for the use of these macromolecules. In summary, the results presented and discussed here can further elucidate the full potential of microalgae polysaccharides for different application purposes, in addition to providing guidance for the main hot spots to be considered in future research in this scientific field.

Abstract:Plant biostimulants are defined as materials containing microorganisms or substances whose function when applied to plants or the rhizosphere is to stimulate natural mechanisms to enhance plant growth, nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stressors and crop quality, independent of their nutrient content. In agriculture, seaweeds (Macroalgae) have been used in the production of plant biostimulants while microalgae still remain unexploited. Microalgae are single cell microscopic organisms (prokaryotic or eukaryotic) that grow in a range of aquatic habitats, including, wastewaters, pounds, lakes, rivers, oceans, and even humid soils. These photosynthetic microorganisms are widely described as renewable sources of biofuels, bioingredients and biologically active compounds, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), carotenoids, phycobiliproteins, sterols, vitamins and polysaccharides, which attract considerable interest in both scientific and industrial communities. Microalgae polysaccharides have so far proved to have several important biological activities, making them biomaterials and bioactive products of increasing importance for a wide range of applications. The present review describes microalgae polysaccharides, their biological activities and their possible application in agriculture as a potential sustainable alternative for enhanced crop performance, nutrient uptake and resilience to environmental stress. This review does not only present a comprehensive and systematic study of Microalgae polysaccharides as plant biostimulants but considers the fundamental and innovative principles underlying this technology.

Abstract:Microalgae have been shown to be useful in several biotechnological fields due to their feasible cultivation and high-value biomolecules production. Several substances of interest produced by microalgae, such as: proteins, lipids, and natural colorants, have already been explored. Based on the continuing demand for new natural molecules, microalgae could also be a valuable source of polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are extremely important in aquaculture, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries, and have great economic impact worldwide. Despite this, reviews on microalgal polysaccharide production, biological activity, and chemical structure are not abundant. Moreover, techniques of microalgal cultivation, coupled with carbohydrate production, need to be clarified in order to develop forward-looking technologies. The present review provides an overview of the main advances in microalgal cell wall polysaccharide production, as well as their associated potential biological applications and chemical structure. Several studies on future prospects, related to microalgae are presented, highlighting the key challenges in microalgal polysaccharide production.

Abstract:With the increasingly in-depth marine research, the high-value utilization of seafood has been a research trend, among which the research on microalgae polysaccharides is sufficient. At present, a large number of studies have shown that microalgae polysaccharides have a wide range of biological activities, but their structural analysis is not systematic. Thus, in the past, the research on microalgae polysaccharides mostly focused on a single dimension. In this paper, the structure, composition, analysis method, biological activity and application of microalgae polysaccharides are studied. Meanwhile, the current research status and achievements of microalgae polysaccharides are presented by integrating multiple indexes, and the defects of existing research are analyzed, which provides guiding suggestions for further research and development of microalgae polysaccharides.

Abstract:There is a current tendency towards bioactive natural products with applications in various industries, such as pharmaceutical, biomedical, cosmetics and food. This has put some emphasis in research on marine organisms, including macroalgae and microalgae, among others. Polysaccharides with marine origin constitute one type of these biochemical compounds that have already proved to have several important properties, such as anticoagulant and/or antithrombotic, immunomodulatory ability, antitumor and cancer preventive, antilipidaemic and hypoglycaemic, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, making them promising bioactive products and biomaterials with a wide range of applications. Their properties are mainly due to their structure and physicochemical characteristics, which depend on the organism they are produced by. In the biomedical field, the polysaccharides from algae can be used in controlled drug delivery, wound management, and regenerative medicine. This review will focus on the biomedical applications of marine polysaccharides from algae.

Abstract:Abstract Microalgae is one of the most important components in the aquatic ecosystem, and they are increasingly used in food and medicine production for human consumption due to their rapid growth cycle and survival ability in the harsh environment. Now, the exploration of microalgae has been gradually deepening, mainly focused on the field of nutrition, medicine, and cosmetics. A great deal of studies has shown that microalgae have a variety of functions in regulating the body health and preventing disease, such as nitrogen fixation, antitumor, antivirus, antioxidation, anti‐inflammatory, and antithrombotic. Furthermore, microalgae can synthesize various high‐valued bioactive substances, such as proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and pigments. In this paper, we have briefly reviewed the research progress of main bioactive components in microalgae, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, and other nutrients included, as well as their present application situation. This paper can provide the guidance for research and development of industrial production of microalgae.

Abstract:The use of natural polymers has increased due to concern about environmental pollution caused by plastics and emerging pollutants from fossil fuels. In this context, polysaccharides from macroalgae and microalgae arise as natural and abundant resources for various biological, biomedical, and food applications. Different nanomaterials are produced from these polysaccharides to act as effective carriers in the food and pharmaceutical industry: drug and nutrient carriers, active compound encapsulation, and delivery of therapeutic agents to tumor tissues. Polysaccharides-based nanomaterials applied as functional ingredients incorporated into foods can improve texture properties and decrease the caloric density of food products. These nanostructures also present the potential for developing food packaging with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In addition, polysaccharides-based nanomaterials are biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe for medical practices to prevent and manage various chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. In this sense, this review article addresses the use of algal polysaccharides for manufacturing nanomaterials and their potential applications in food and biomedical areas. In addition, the paper discusses the general aspects of algae as a source of polysaccharides, the nanomaterials produced from these polymers, as well as recent studies and the potential use of algal polysaccharides for industries.

Abstract:Marine macroalgal (seaweed) polysaccharides are highly promising for next-generation applications in several industries. However, despite the reported comprehensive potential of these polysaccharides, commercial products are scarce on the market. Seaweed cultivations are increasing in number and production quantity, owing to an elevated global trend of utilization interest in seaweed. The extraction of polysaccharides from seaweed generally generates low yields, but novel methods are being developed to facilitate and improve the extraction processes. Current areas of applications for seaweed polysaccharides mainly take advantage of the physicochemical properties of certain polysaccharides, such as gelling, thickening and emulsifying. However, many of the numerous bioactivities reported are still only at research level and lack clinical evidence for commercialization. It has been suggested the construction of smaller units may generate better defined molecules that are more suitable for biomedical applications. Enzymatic modification is a promising tool for the generation of more defined, targeted biomolecules. This review covers; structural differences between the most predominant marine algal polysaccharides, extraction processes, modification alternatives, as well as a summary of current and potential next-generation application areas.

Abstract:Microalgae and cyanobacteria contain several biomolecules of commercial interest, including pigments, fatty acids, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Among these, polysaccharides (PS) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) have been highlighted for their high levels of biological activity. In this context, this chapter aimed to not only highlight the main types, growing conditions, and downstream processes that influence the PS and EPS yield of microalgae but also to report on the promising biomedical effects of their applications. The Increased production of PS or EPS by microalgae can be obtained mostly by providing stress conditions through nutritional limitation and/or adverse extrinsic growth conditions. In addition, the separation and purification stages can influence the acquisition of these biomolecules. Therefore, this chapter demonstrates that PS and EPS of microalgae, especially when a high concentration of sulfate is present, can act efficiently as bioactive molecules in the health field compared to specific reference drugs.

Abstract:In recent years, marine macroalgae with extensive biomass have attracted the attention of researchers worldwide. Furthermore, algal polysaccharides have been widely studied in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic fields because of their various kinds of bioactivities. However, there are immense barriers to their application as a result of their high molecular size, poor solubility, hydrocolloid nature, and low physiological activities. Unique polysaccharides, such as laminarin, alginate, fucoidan, agar, carrageenan, porphyran, ulvan, and other complex structural polysaccharides, can be digested by marine bacteria with many carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) by breaking down the limitation of glycosidic bonds. However, structural elucidation of algal polysaccharides, metabolic pathways, and identification of potential polysaccharide hydrolases that participate in different metabolic pathways remain major obstacles restricting the efficient utilization of algal oligosaccharides. This review focuses on the structure, hydrolase families, metabolic pathways, and potential applications of seven macroalgae polysaccharides. These results will contribute to progressing our understanding of the structure of algal polysaccharides and their metabolic pathways and will be valuable for clearing the way for the compelling utilization of bioactive oligosaccharides.

Abstract:Algae play a significant role in the global carbon cycle by utilizing photosynthesis to efficiently convert solar energy and atmospheric carbon dioxide into various chemical compounds, notably carbohydrates, pigments, lipids, and released oxygen, making them a unique sustainable cellular factory. Algae mostly consist of carbohydrates, which include a broad variety of structures that contribute to their distinct physical and chemical properties such as degree of polymerization, side chain, branching, degree of sulfation, hydrogen bond etc., these features play a crucial role in regulating many biological activity, nutritional and pharmaceutical properties. Algal carbohydrates have not received enough attention in spite of their distinctive structural traits linked to certain biological and physicochemical properties. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that there will be a significant increase in the near future due to increasing demand, sustainable source, biofuel generation and their bioactivity. This is facilitated by the abundance of easily accessible information on the structural data and distinctive characteristics of these biopolymers. This review delves into the different types of saccharides such as agar, alginate, fucoidan, carrageenan, ulvan, EPS and glucans synthesized by various macroalgal and microalgal systems, which include intracellular, extracellular and cell wall saccharides. Their structure, biosynthetic pathway, sources, production strategies and their applications in various field such as nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, food and feed, cosmetics, and bioenergy are also elaborately discussed. Algal polysaccharide has huge a scope for exploitation in future due to their application in food and pharmaceutical industry and it can become a huge source of capital and income.

Abstract:Microalgae are a group of microorganisms containing chlorophyll A, which are highly photosynthetic and rich in nutrients. And they can produce multiple bioactive substances (peptides, proteins, polysaccharides, and fatty acids) for biomedical applications. Despite the unique advantages of microalgae-based biotherapy, the insufficient treatment efficiency limits its further application. With the development of nanotechnology, the combination of microalgae and biomaterials can improve therapeutic efficacies, which has attracted increasing attention. In this microalgal-biomaterials hybrid system, biomaterials with excellent optical and magnetic properties play an important role in biological therapy. Microalgae, as a natural vehicle, can increase oxygen content and alleviate hypoxia in diseased areas, further enhancing therapeutic effects. In this review, the synergistic therapeutic effects of microalgal-biomaterials hybrid system in different diseases (cancer, myocardial infarction, ischemia stroke, chronic infection, and intestinal diseases) are comprehensively summarized.

Abstract:Microalgae are unicellular, photosynthethic organisms that can grow on diverse aquatic habitatss like ponds, lakes, rivers, oceans, waste water and humid soils. Recently, microalgae are gaining importance as renewable sources of biologically active food compounds such as polysaccharides, proteins, essential fatty acids, biopigments such as chlorophylls, carotenoids, astaxanthin, as well as vitamins and minerals.The bioactive food compounds of microalgae enable them to be part of multitude of applications in numerous industrial products for healthy life and ecosystem. This review article summarizes the applications of biologically active food compounds derived from microalgae as nutraceuticals, healthy dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Further, this review article highlights the importance of research focus on the identification and extraction of bioactive food compounds from the huge numbers of microlage that exist in nature for sustainable global food security and economy.
