Abstract:In this paper, interval estimation of the two-parameter exponential distribution based on constant-stress accelerated life test data under Type-II censoring is studied. The life-stress models of the scale and location parameters are assumed to be log-linear. The maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are obtained. The exact and approximate confidence intervals for the parameters in the life-stress model of the scale parameter are developed. The generalized confidence intervals for the parameters in the life-stress model of the location parameter, and mean and reliability function at the designed stress level are derived. The performance of the proposed generalized confidence intervals is assessed by the Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, a real example is used to illustrate our methods.

Abstract:We consider the estimation of the conditional tail moment at extreme levels for the class of Weibull‐type distributions. A two‐step procedure is introduced where in the first stage one estimates the conditional tail moment at an intermediate level, followed by an extrapolation in the second stage. The asymptotic properties of the estimators introduced in the two stages are derived under suitable assumptions. The finite sample properties of the proposed estimator are examined with a simulation experiment. We conclude with two applications on real life data: wind speed measurements collected at an offshore wind farm and PM2.5 air pollution data.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of estimating the extreme value index in presence of random censoring for distributions in the Weibull domain of attraction. The methodologies introduced in [Worms (2014)], in the heavy-tailed case, are adapted here to the negative extreme value index framework, leading to the definition of weighted versions of the popular moments of relative excesses with arbitrary exponent. This leads to the definition of two families of estimators (with an adaptation of the so called Moment estimator as a particular case), for which the consistency is proved under a first order condition. Illustration of their performance, issued from an extensive simulation study, are provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose methods for the estimation of parameters for the three-parameter Reflected Weibull distribution. The Moment estimator , Maximum likelihood estimator and Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator. The Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator is based on a data transformation, which avoids the problem of unbounded likelihood estimator. Through Mont Carlo simulations, we further show that the Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator performs better than methods moment and maximum likelihood estimator in terms of bias and root mean squared error. Finally, two examples based on real data sets are presented to illustrate methods.

Abstract:This paper provides some extended results on estimating parameter matrix of several regression models when the covariate or response possesses weaker moment condition. We study the M-estimator of Fan et al. (2021) for matrix completion model with (1+ϵ)-th moment noise. The corresponding phase transition phenomenon is observed. When 1>ϵ>0, the robust estimator possesses a slower convergence rate compared with previous literature. For high dimensional multiple index coefficient model, we propose an improved estimator via applying the element-wise truncation method to handle heavy-tailed data with finite fourth moment. The extensive simulation study validates our theoretical results.

Abstract:This study proposes a new approach to estimate the parameters of the two-parameter Weibull distribution in the case of complete (uncensored) or doubly Type II censored samples. The proposed estimators have closed forms and can be adapted to Type II right or Type II left censored samples. The new estimators are strongly consistent and the new shape estimator follows asymptotically a normal and the new scale estimator a lognormal distribution. Bias, mean square and efficiency performance of the new estimators are investigated through simulations and compared to some known estimation methods such as maximum likelihood estimation, method of moments, quantile estimation, maximum goodness of fit estimation, L-moments, U-statistics and bias-corrected maximum likelihood. According to the simulations, the newly proposed estimators seem to have good efficiency performance in comparison to the other methods, particularly in small samples. Furthermore, two real data sets are used to illustrate the new estimators.

Abstract:The generalized method of moments (GMM) is a very popular estimation and inference procedure based on moment conditions. When likelihood-based methods are difficult to implement, one can often derive various moment conditions and construct the GMM objective function. However, minimization of the objective function in the GMM may be challenging, especially over a large parameter space. Due to the special structure of the GMM, we propose a new sampling-based algorithm, the stochastic GMM sampler, which replaces the multivariate minimization problem by a series of conditional sampling procedures. We develop the theoretical properties of the proposed iterative Monte Carlo method, and demonstrate its superior performance over other GMM estimation procedures in simulation studies. As an illustration, we apply the stochastic GMM sampler to a Medfly life longevity study. Supplemental materials for the article are available online.

Abstract:The mixture of two 2-parameter Weibull distributions (MixW), as a specialized variant of the mixture of Weibull distributions, serves as an ideal model for heterogeneous data sets within the realms of reliability studies and survival analysis. A principal challenge in dealing with MixW lies in the estimation of parameters. Inspired by the exemplary efficacy of the Quasi-Monte Carlo method in quantile estimation, this paper introduces an innovative approach, which employs the Harrell-Davis and three Sfakianakis and Verginis quantile estimators to enhance the representativeness of the sample, thereby improving the accuracy of parameter estimation. Given the difficulty in deriving analytical expressions for the parameters of MixW and their propensity for convergence to local maxima, this paper adopts the sequential number-theoretic (SNTO) algorithm for the numerical resolution of parameter estimation. The initial optimization region for SNTO is determined via the graphical method of the Weibull probability plot. Simulation studies have demonstrated that our proposed method significantly enhances estimation precision and reduces dependence on the "quality" of the sample. Furthermore, this methodology has been applied to two real data sets that demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:We develop new estimators for the parameters of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by compound Poisson processes, which can be considered as a class of stochastic hybrid systems. Our estimators are derived based on the method of moments. We also establish the central limit theorem for the proposed estimators. Numerical experiments are provided to show that our method performs better when compared with the existing methods, especially in cases when the jumps of the compound Poisson process are relatively rare.

Abstract:Numerous studies have been devoted to estimating and testing for moment condition models.Most of the existing studies assume that structural parameters are either fixed or changed abruptlyover time. This study considers estimation of and testing for smooth structural changes in momentcondition models where the data generating process is assumed to be locally stationary. A novellocal generalized method of moment estimator and its boundary-corrected counterpart are proposed to estimate the smoothly changing structural parameters. Consistency and asymptotic normality are established, and an optimal weighting matrix and its consistent estimator are obtained. In particular, a consistent nonparametric test is proposed to check both smooth changes and abrupt breaks in structural parameters. The test is asymptotically pivotal and does not require prior information about the alternative. A Monte Carlo study is performed to illustrate the merits ofthe proposed test. In an empirical application, we document the time-varying features of the riskaversion parameter in an asset pricing model, which are consistent with business cycles and financial crisis.

Abstract:In reliability and life data analysis, the Weibull distribution is widely used to accommodate more data characteristics by changing the values of the parameters. We frequently observe many zeros or close to zero data points in reliability and life testing experiments. We call this phenomenon a nearly instantaneous failure. Many researchers modified the commonly used univariate parametric models such as exponential, gamma, Weibull, and log-normal distributions to appropriately fit such data having instantaneous failure observations. Researchers also find bivariate correlated life testing data having many observations near a particular point while the remaining observations follow some continuous distribution. This situation defines as responses having early failures for such bivariate responses. If the point is the origin, then we call the situation a nearly instantaneous failure for the responses. Here, we propose a modified bivariate Weibull distribution that allows early failure by combining bivariate uniform distribution and bivariate Weibull distribution. The bivariate Weibull distribution is constructed using a 2-dimensional copula, assuming the marginal distributions as two parametric Weibull distributions. We derive some properties of that modified bivariate Weibull distribution, mainly the joint probability density function, the survival (reliability) function, and the hazard (failure rate) function. The model's unknown parameters are estimated using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) technique combined with a machine learning clustering algorithm. Numerical examples are provided using simulated data to illustrate and test the performance of the proposed methodologies. The method is also applied to real data and compared with existing approaches to model such data in the literature.

Abstract:In this article, the parameter estimation of several commonly used two-parameter lifetime distributions, including the Weibull, inverse Gaussian, and Birnbaum–Saunders distributions, based on joint progressively Type-II right-censored sample is studied. Different numerical methods and algorithms are used to compute the maximum likelihood estimates of the unknown model parameters. These methods include the Newton–Raphson method, the stochastic expectation–maximization (SEM) algorithm, and the dual annealing (DA) algorithm. These estimation methods are compared in terms of accuracy (e.g. the bias and mean squared error), computational time and effort (e.g. the required number of iterations), the ability to obtain the largest value of the likelihood, and convergence issues by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study. Recommendations are made based on the simulated results. A real data set is analyzed for illustrative purposes. These methods are implemented in Python, and the computer programs are available from the authors upon request.

Abstract:We study a class of positive random variables having moments of Gamma type, whose density can be expressed by the three-parametric Mittag-Leffler functions. We give some necessary conditions and some sufficient conditions for their existence. As a corollary, we give some conditions for non-negativity of the three-parametric Mittag-Leffler functions. As an application, we study the infinite divisibility of the powers of half $\a$-Cauchy variable. In addition, we find that a random variable $\X$ having moment of Gamma type if and only if $\log \X$ is quasi infinitely divisible. From this perspective, we can solve many Hausdorff moment problems of sequences of factorial ratios.

Abstract:In numerous instances, the generalized exponential distribution can be used as an alternative to the gamma distribution or the Weibull distribution when analyzing lifetime or skewed data. This article offers a consistent method for estimating the parameters of a three-parameter generalized exponential distribution that sidesteps the issue of an unbounded likelihood function. The method is hinged on a maximum likelihood estimation of shape and scale parameters that uses a location-invariant statistic. Important estimator properties, such as uniqueness and consistency, are demonstrated. In addition, quantile estimates for the lifetime distribution are provided. We present a Monte Carlo simulation study along with comparisons to a number of well-known estimation techniques in terms of bias and root mean square error. For illustrative purposes, a real-world lifetime data set is analyzed.
