Abstract:Germanium plays an essential role in many high-tech fields because of its excellent electrical and optical properties. For germanium from primary resources, approximately 51.7% of it was sourced from zinc concentrate, which is one of the most important sources of germanium recovery. The germanium recovery process is mainly divided into two parts: leaching and separation, including acid-base leaching, tannin precipitation, extraction, ion exchange, supporting liquid membrane and chlorination. However, the total recovery efficiency for germanium is low, accompanied by high energy consumption and high impurity content. Therefore, there is an urgent need to utilize germanium in zinc concentrate globally using efficient and low-consumption green processes. Detailed analysis of the nature of insoluble phases in minerals and mechanisms such as coordination, external field enhancement, precipitation, and extraction are crucial to solving the low recovery rate of germanium. Accordingly, this paper provides a systematic overview of the basic properties, key technologies and recent advances for leaching and separation of germanium, with particular emphasis on the study of germanium species and coordination reactions. Finally, some recommendations are provided to promote the development of the comprehensive utilization of germanium in the zinc refining process.

Recovery of Indium from Hard Zinc Slag by Pressure Leaching and Solvent Extraction

Abstract:In this study, hydrometallurgical processes involving pressure acid leaching and solvent extraction were developed to aid recovery of indium from zinc slag, which is produced in the imperial smelting process. Four different acid leaching methods were studied, namely atmospheric leaching, atmospheric leaching with KMnO4, roasting-atmospheric leaching, and oxygen pressure leaching in a sulfuric acid medium. Oxygen pressure acid leaching is the most effective method for indium extraction, and 94.1% of indium was leached under the optimum conditions, i.e., 300 g/L H2SO4,oxygen pressure 0.4 MPa, liquid/solid ratio 10 mL/g, and temperature 100°C for 5 h. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy examination of the raw material and leaching residue samples indicated that the intermetallic compounds Cu5Zn8and Cu2Zn, metallic zinc, and iron in the raw material dissolved, leaving the insoluble components PbSO4 and Pb as the major compounds in the leaching residue. A 98.5% proportion of the indium in the leaching solution was selectively extracted with 30% bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and 70% kerosene by three-stage counter-current extraction, and 99.5% of the indium in the loaded organic phase was stripped by 6 mol/L HCl through four-stage counter-current stripping. The overall recovery yield of indium through all processes was approximately 92%.

Abstract:Selective extraction of indium and germanium from natural resources due to their important role in high-tech fields is attracting more and more attention. In this paper, indium and germanium were recovered from In-Ge residue leaching solution by the selective solvent extraction of indium with D2EHPA and the precipitation of germanium using tannin. This process included two main stages: indium-selective solvent extraction and germanium-selective precipitation. In the first stage, indium was extracted by using an organic phase containing 15% D2EHPA and 85% kerosene. The indium-loaded organic phase was washed with 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and then stripped by 4 M HCl solution to obtain an indium extraction ratio of 99% and a stripping ratio of 98.3%. In the second stage, the pH of the raffinate was adjusted to 3.5–4.0 with ZnO dust and then mixed with tannin. Germanium (99%) was selectively precipitated as a tannin-germanium complex. The washed tannin-germanium complex was baked at 500 °C for 3 h to produce a germanium concentrate. By studying the separation coefficients of indium, germanium, and zinc (1994 and 1093, respectively), and controlling the reaction conditions, the maximum separation of indium, germanium, and zinc was obtained. The extraction mechanism of indium from sulfuric acid solution by D2EHPA and element migration during the precipitation of germanium using tannin were also studied. This proposed process flow can be used to selectively recover germanium and indium from In-Ge residue leaching solutions.

Abstract:In this study we use the process of "electrochemical dissolving-solvent extraction-zinc cementation" to recover indium from lead alloy bearing indium.The experimental results indicate that under optimum conditions,the dissolving ratio of indium can reach 94.28 %,the extracting ratio of indium can gain 98.89 % and the stripping ratio of indium approaches 100 %,and also,the impurity elements,such as Zn、Fe and Sn can be removed entirely.

Abstract:Lead-zinc sulfide ore is one of the raw materials for the recovery of strategic germanium resources. Due to the complexity of its mineralization and the diversity of elements, the occurrence and migration of germanium and its related elements in the process of zinc hydrometallurgy is still a mystery. This leads to the recovery efficiency of germanium is always in a disappointing state, which seriously reduces the economic benefits and resource recovery rate in the process of germanium recovery, and limits the development of some cutting-edge industries. Therefore, in view of the above problems, based on the properties of germanium compounds in lead–zinc sulfide minerals, this study analyzed the occurrence state and quantity of germanium in the products of each stage in the process of zinc hydrometallurgy by ICP, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS, Raman spectrum and TG, so as to reveal the reaction behavior and migration law of germanium compounds in the process of zinc hydrometallurgy. The results indicate show that the two roasting will lead to the mutual transformation of GeO 2 crystal form between soluble and insoluble, especially in the process of reduction and volatilization of zinc leaching residue. The phenomenon of soluble GeO 2 to insoluble GeO 2 is particularly significant, and the germanium-containing silicate cannot be reacted in the whole process. In addition, zinc blende, zinc ferrite, tin dioxide and other substances that exhibit isomorphism with germanium compounds will carry germanium into lead slag due to their low solubility. Finally, in view of the problems existing in the current germanium recovery process, positive solutions are proposed to introduce green additives in the two roasting stages to improve the phase of germanium, and to add oxidants or reducing agents in the leaching stage.

Abstract:Though indium has been removed from the fifth list (2023) of critical raw materials for the European Union list of critical metals, its recovery is still of paramount importance due to its wide use in a series of high-tech industries. As its recovery is closely associated with zinc mining, the recycling of In-bearing wastes is also of interest, for both profitable and environmental reasons. With unit operations (in hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy or extractive metallurgy) playing a key role in the recycling of indium, the present work reviewed the most recent innovations (2024) regarding the use of these operations in the recovery from this valuable metal from different solid or liquid wastes.

Abstract:Germanium-bearing iron cake (GBIC) produced through the germanium removal process in a zinc smelter is a valuable source of zinc and germanium. However, achieving selective separation of zinc and germanium using pyrometallurgy treatment and sulfuric acid leaching methods is challenging. To address these challenges, this study introduced a novel roasting–leaching process. During roasting, willemite transformed into ammonia-soluble hemimorphite, promoting zinc leaching. This transformation was mainly attributed to the reaction between in situ water in GBIC and willemite within 200–500 °C. Optimal roasting conditions included a particle size range of 49–74 μm, a roasting temperature of 490 °C, and a duration of 4 h. Under optimized leaching conditions—[NH 4 + +NH 3 ] (7 mol/L), NH 4 + /NH 3 molar ratio (2.5), temperature (50 °C), liquid-to-solid ratio (20 mL/g), agitation speed (600 rpm), and time (180 min)—zinc and germanium exhibited leaching yields of 84.92 % and 0.59 %, respectively, in an ammonia–ammonium carbonate system. After three cycles of leaching, the Zn concentration in leachate increased to 20 g/L, facilitating the subsequent recovery of zinc. Moreover, the Ge concentration in the germanium-bearing leaching residue increased by 1.5 times compared with the initial GBIC, making the residue a valuable source of germanium.

Recovery technologies for indium, gallium, and germanium from end-of-life products (electronic waste) - A review

Abstract:Advanced high-tech applications for communication, renewable energy, and display, heavily rely on technology critical elements (TCEs) such as indium, gallium, and germanium. Ensuring their sustainable supply is a pressing concern due to their high economic value and supply risks in the European Union. Recovering these elements from end-of-life (EoL) products (electronic waste: e-waste) offers a potential solution to address TCEs shortages. The review highlights recent advances in pre-treatment and hydrometallurgical and biohydrometallurgical methods for indium, gallium, and germanium recovery from EoL products, including spent liquid crystal displays (LCDs), light emitting diodes (LEDs), photovoltaics (PVs), and optical fibers (OFs). Leaching methods, including strong mineral and organic acids, and bioleaching, achieve over 95% indium recovery from spent LCDs. Recovery methods emphasize solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and cementation. However, challenges persist in separating indium from other non-target elements like Al, Fe, Zn, and Sn. Promising purification involves solid-phase extraction, electrochemical separation, and supercritical fluid extraction. Gallium recovery from spent GaN and GaAs LEDs achieves 99% yield via leaching with HCl after annealing and HNO3, respectively. Sustainable gallium purification techniques include solvent extraction, ionic liquid extraction, and nanofiltration. Indium and gallium recovery from spent CIGS PVs achieves over 90% extraction yields via H2SO4 with citric acid-H2O2 and alkali. Although bioleaching is slower than chemical leaching (several days versus several hours), indirect bioleaching shows potential, achieving 70% gallium extraction yield. Solvent extraction and electrolysis exhibit promise for pure gallium recovery. HF or alkali roasting leaches germanium with a high yield of 98% from spent OFs. Solvent extraction achieves over 90% germanium recovery with minimal silicon co-extraction. Solid-phase extraction offers selective germanium recovery. Advancements in optimizing and implementing these e-waste recovery protocols will enhance the circularity of these TCEs.

Abstract:Germanium, as strategic reserve metal, plays critical role in high-tech industry. However, a contradiction of increasing consumption and scarcity of germanium resource is becoming more and more prominent. This paper proposed an integrated process to recycle germanium from coal fly ash. This technological process mainly consisted of two procedures: vacuum reduction with the purposes of enriching germanium and chlorinated distillation with the purposes of purifying germanium. Several highlights are summarized as follows: (i) Separation principle and reaction mechanism were discussed to understand this integrated process. (ii) Optimum designs and product analysis were developed to guide industrial recycling. The appropriate parameters for vacuum reduction process on the basis of response surface methodology (RSM) were 920.53°C and 259.63Pa, with 16.64wt.% reductant, and for the chlorinated distillation process, adding 8mol/l HCl and L/S 7, 8wt.% MnO2. The global recovery rate of germanium was 83.48±0.36% for the integrated process. (iii) This process overcomes the shortages of traditional process and shows its efficiency and environmental performance. It is significant in accordance with the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Principle" for solid waste and further provides a new opportunity for germanium recovery from waste by environment-friendly way.

Abstract:Germanium-containing residues (GCR) are a secondary resource rich in zinc (Zn) and germanium (Ge) produced in the Zn pyrometallurgical process and an important raw material for recovering Zn and Ge. To recycle the residue by hydrometallurgy, sulfuric acid is used to leach the residue under normal pressure. In this study, the experimental conditions (leaching temperature, leaching time, liquid/solid (L/S) mass ratio and initial acidity) were optimized through the experimental design to make the optimized experimental conditions consistent with the current industrial production conditions, so as to maximize the leaching rate of Zn and Ge, and the main reasons for the low leaching rate of germanium were analyzed. The results show that the optimum reaction conditions are as follows: initial acidity 160 g·L−1, leaching temperature 90 °C, L/S mass ratio 5:1, leaching time 60 min and stirring speed 400 r·min−1. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the leaching rates of Zn and Ge are 83.22% and 77.29%, respectively. The reason for the low leaching rates of Zn and Ge in GCR was obtained through atmospheric leaching experiment, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical phase analysis. GCR is mainly composed of phases such as zincite (ZnO), galena (PbS), wurtzite (ZnS) and anglesite (PbSO4), and the main elements are Zn, lead (Pb), germanium (Ge), oxygen (O), sulfur (S), silicon (Si), aluminum (Al) and Fe. This study can provide a certain reference value for researchers, in order to provide a reference for the large-scale recycling of Zn and Ge resources in the future.

Abstract:Large quantities of indium-bearing zinc-leached residue (ZLR) are produced constantly in the hydrometallurgical production of zinc, including zinc, indium, iron and other valuable metals. In order to recover valuable metals from the residue, a new reductive leaching process using galena as reductant has been developed, in which the extensive leaching of zinc and indium is achieved. A shrinking core model under the control of surface chemical reaction best fitted the leaching of indium from the residue. The apparent activation energy of indium leaching was calculated to be 64 kJ/mol, and the reaction orders were determined as −0.34 and 1.47 with respect to particle size and initial H2SO4 concentration, respectively. The extent of leaching was 87% for zinc, 91% for iron and 88% for indium after 90 min at 85 °C, using an initial H2SO4 concentration of 140 g/L and a molar ratio of lead sulfide to zinc ferrite of 1:1. The reductive leaching process of the residue achieved high dissolution of zinc and indium, and iron existed as Fe2+ in solution would prove beneficial for the subsequent iron removal stage.

Abstract:Zn, Pb, Ga and Ge were separated and recovered from zinc refinery residues by stepwise leaching. In the first stage, by leaching with H2SO4 media, more than 90% of Zn and 99% of Ga were dissolved, leaving 92% of Ge in the leaching residue. In the second stage, by leaching with HCl media, approximately 99% of Pb and less than 2% of Ge were selectively dissolved. Finally, the remaining 90% of Ge was extracted in 1 mol/L NaOH solution by destroying the correlation between SiO2 and Ge. XRD pattern of the leaching residue demonstrated that ZnSO4·H2O, PbSO4 and SiO2 were removed sequentially through the stepwise leaching. The proposed process achieved high recoveries of Zn, Pb, Ga and Ge, thus presenting a potential industrial application.

Abstract:Under the background of the increasing demand for germanium in high-tech, this paper finds out the mechanism of silicon germanium polymerization precipitation by simulating the leaching process of zinc oxide dust containing germanium. By comparing and analyzing the simulation experiments under ultrasonic and conventional conditions, the mechanism of efficient dispersion and depolymerization of germanium silicon precipitation induced by ultrasonic was found out. The results show that in the leaching process of germanium-containing zinc oxide dust, due to the increase of local pH, some silicon ions in the solution will hydrolyze and polymerize to form silicic acid colloid to adsorb germanium in the solution, causing the loss of germanium 14.81%, resulting in low recovery rate of germanium industry. Ultrasonic wave was introduced in the leaching process, and the shock wave and micro-jet released by ultrasonic cavitation continuously impacted the surface of polysilicate colloid. The germanium adsorbed on the surface of the silicic acid colloid is desorbed, and the large particles of silica gel are depolymerized into small particles of silicic acid, which reduces the adsorption of silica gel on germanium. The loss of germanium under ultrasonic conditions can be reduced by 59.35%. This study can effectively realize the efficient recovery of germanium in zinc oxide dust, and provide process and theoretical basis for the sustainable development of germanium industry.

Abstract:A novel leaching-roasting-leaching strategy was used to recover valuable metals from zinc oxide dust containing intractable germanide. In the ultrasonic enhanced oxidation leaching stage, potassium permanganate and ultrasonication were introduced to strengthen the dissolution of sulphide. During the roasting stage, sodium carbonate and magnesium nitrate were added to promote the reaction between the insoluble tetrahedral germanium dioxide and complex forms of germanium-containing compounds. Simultaneously, the sulphur produced in the ultrasonic enhanced oxidation leaching stage was used to change the phases of tin dioxide and zinc ferrite, thereby releasing germanium into its lattice. Finally, the germanium in the roasting slag was recovered by conventional leaching, and the grades of lead and tin in the residue were enriched to 35.21% and 11.31%, respectively. Compared with the conventional acid leaching process of enterprise, the total reaction time of this method was shortened to 80 min, and the recovery rates of zinc and germanium increased by approximately 10% and 40%, respectively. The entire process is clean and environmentally friendly and does not cause adverse effects on the recovery of lead and tin. Overall, this study provides new insights into the design of valuable metal recovery methods for zinc oxide dust containing intractable germanide. Environmental Implication Zinc oxide dust contains a large number of toxic metals such as arsenic, lead, zinc and cadmium, which will destroy the ecological environment and endanger human health. Therefore, some metals are recycled first, and toxic elements such as arsenic and cadmium enter the solution from the slag phase, and then are concentrated in the zinc electrowinning stage to reduce the toxicity of the slag stacking. The highly enriched lead and tin in the final residue can be returned to the smelting system for recycling, thereby reducing the harm of the slag and achieving the purpose of comprehensive utilization of resources.

Abstract:Gallium (indium)-bearing dust generated from semiconductor industry is an important secondary resource for critical metal recycling. However, the diverse and distinct physicochemical natures of such waste material have made its recycling less effective, e.g. low extraction rate and complex treatment procedures. This research is devoted to gaining in-depth knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of such waste, including the chemical composition, physical phases, particle size distribution and chemical-thermal properties with a series of technologies. As a consequence, the occurrence and distribution of GaN and metallic indium phases are found to be crucial to efficient metal recycling. The thermal-chemical behavior shows that continuous oxidation occurred in the air atmosphere, indicating that heat-treatment followed by acid leaching is feasible to improve their recycling efficiencies. This process is able to leach 80.35% of gallium and 95.78% of indium with one-step operation. Furthermore, different treatment strategies for the waste material are preliminarily evaluated and discussed for the aim of metal recovery. The results show that gallium can be selectively recycled with recycling rate of 89.59% using alkaline leaching. With this research, the understanding on the recyclability of different metals and possibilities of selective recovery can be improved. It provides guidelines during the stage of decision-making for critical metal recycling in order to achieve efficient resource circulation.

Abstract:Considering gallium-based liquid metal (G-LM) waste as a kind of hazardous waste , it may pose a serious threat to the surrounding environment and human health if it improperly disposed. Meanwhile, gallium and indium are its main metal elements with high recovery value. Here, a scheme for the acid-leaching resin separation and purification of Ga and In was proposed. First, G-LM waste was leached with 3 M HNO 3 for 2 h at 40 °C. Under the optimal conditions, more than 99.99% of Ga, In, and Zn was leached, and then adsorbed and eluted from the solution by a CL-P204 solvent-impregnated resin. Most Sn existed as β-H 2 SnO 3 and entered the slag phase. The recovery and purity of Ga were 96.01% and 99.49%, while those of In were 99.83% and 98.23%. The P204 solvent-impregnated resin used in the experimental process can be recycled, this work demonstrates a new and environmentally friendly method for the separation and purification of Ga and In from G-LM waste.

Abstract:Indium and zinc extractions from zinc neutral leach residue were investigated with sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide. Sulphur dioxide maintained a low concentration of Fe3+ in the solution and promoted the decomposition of zinc ferrite. More zinc, indium, and iron dissolve into the solution, while copper co-precipitates with arsenic and sulphur into the residue. The optimal reductive leaching conditions were determined as 120 g/L H2SO4, 200 kPa sulphur dioxide partial pressure, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 8 mL/g and a stirring speed of 500 r/min at 105°C for 4 h. Extractions of 95.24% of zinc, 98.66% of iron, 95.04% of indium and 0.036% of copper were achieved. Copper in final residue exist as sulphides and can be recovered by subsequent oxygen pressure leaching. Selective recovery of valuable metals from zinc neutral leach residue is realised.

Abstract:Reductive leaching of high-iron bearing zinc leaching residue (HIZLR) by zinc sulfide concentrate to extract indium and its further selective separation from the leachate were studied. The results indicated that over 95% of indium extraction was achieved at particle sizes of 74−105 μm, reaction temperature of 90 °C, leaching time of 300 min and sulfuric acid concentration of 1.4 mol/L. The leaching kinetics was analyzed by the shrinking core model, and the leaching data from various experimental conditions indicated that the reactions were controlled by the diffusion through the solid product layer with an activation energy of 17.96 kJ/mol. The order of the reaction with respect to the sulfuric acid concentration was determined to be 2.41. Over 99% of copper and arsenic were coprecipitated in the cementation of copper with iron powder. More than 98% of indium was selectively separated from zinc sulfate solution with high ferrous ion content, and the indium-rich precipitate, which had an indium content of approximately 2.4%, could be further treated by the acid leaching−solvent extraction−electrowinning process to produce pure indium.

Abstract:Though nowadays germanium does not reach the range of popularity of other metals, i.e., rare earth elements, its utility in target industries makes it a strategic metal. Though germanium can be found in a series of raw materials, the principal source for its recovery is from secondary wastes of the zinc industry; also, the recyclability of germanium-bearing waste materials is becoming of interest. In this recovery and due to the size of the target materials, because the diffusion and reaction are to be considered, hydrometallurgy performs a key role in achieving this goal. The present work reviews the most recent applications (2023 and 2024 years) of hydrometallurgical operations on the recovery of germanium from different solid and liquid sources.

Abstract:Germanium is an important semiconductor material. With its wide application in high precision industries such as infrared optics, photovoltaics and semiconductor devices, the purity of elemental germanium has been put forward with higher requirements. This research focuses on the environmentally friendly vacuum distillation purification of zone-fused germanium tailings (99.98 %) to separate low-boiling-point trace impurities such as Zn, In, and Mg. These impurities hinder the preparation of ultrapure germanium (7 N). We propose a novel vacuum distillation–based deep purification process to effectively separate trace impurities in the zone-fused germanium tailings. The initial germanium and purified germanium are comprehensively analyzed using glow discharge mass spectrometry. Our vacuum purification results indicate that the impurity content is below 0.05 ppm for all elements except As. The As content reaches 0.87 ppm with a removal ratio of 96.1 %, resulting in elementary germanium with 99.9995 % purity. This method considerably increases the recovery ratio of germanium-rich secondary resources to over 95 % while efficiently eliminating low-boiling-point trace impurities such as Zn, Mg, and Pb from the zone-fused germanium tailings. The findings suggest the method's substantial potential for industrial application. This study offers valuable insights into the deep purification and front-end preparation of high-purity germanium.
