Abstract:Objective To explore the significance and changes of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in the striatum in patients with Parkinson′s disease(PD). Methods 1H-MRS localized to the both striatum, was carried out in 36 PD patients (14 patients with Hoehn-Yahr stageⅠ, 8 patients with Hoehn-Yahr stageⅡ, 8 patients with Hoehn-Yahr stageⅢ, and 6 patients with Hoehn-Yahr stageⅣ)and 20 age-matched healthy control subjects. The metabolite ratios of N-acetylasparatate (NAA)/creatine (Cr), and choline-containing compounds(Cho)/Cr in PD patients were compared with those in the age-matched healthy control subjects. Results NAA/Cr ratios were reduced significantly (P 0.05)and Cho/Cr ratios were increased significantly(P 0.05)in the striatum contralateral to the affected limb of patients with early-stage PD ( Hoehn-Yahr stageⅠ)and the both side of striatum of patients with middle and advanced PD, compared to those in the age-matched healthy control subjects. However, corresponding progressive changes in NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios among the later stages of PD(Hoehn-Yahr Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ) were not significant(P 0.05). Hence, NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios were not closely related to the stage of PD. Conclusion The significant changes of 1H-MRS found in the striatum of PD patients suggest that 1H-MRS can provide valuable information concerning the biochemical and pathological changes of nerve cell in the striatum of PD patients.
