Abstract:This article introduces the theoretical basis of the Length Approach and the basic idea of the Length Approach, and explains the teaching design of the Length Approach which includes the teaching goal, teaching methods, classroom teaching, evaluation and feedback.For a long time, writing has always been one of the weakest links in college English teaching in China. College English textbooks in China indicate that writing is one part of intensive reading, or more accurately, subordinate to vocabulary practice and grammar drill. Compared with other language skills, less than enough class time is allocated to writing, and little preparation is done for written work in class. The teaching of writing in the English teaching classroom often goes this way: the teacher gives a topic or a selection of topics, a set of requirements, and a time limit. The students finish the task within the time limit and hand in the final product, and then receive a grade, perhaps a response and another assignment. The efficiency of writing course is very low. Students' poor performance in the CET-4 (College English Test Band-4) and CET-6 (College English Test Band-6) can serve as an illustration of the low efficiency.Teaching English writing is always the most difficult part of English education in China. Because writing is just a part of intensive reading, there are few course periods for teaching it in class. Therefore, teachers have no time to pay much attention to the teaching of writing which is thought to be time-consuming and inefficient. In order to pass CET-4 or CET-6, a cram session for composition guidance has become a common teaching mode in most colleges. Students are lack of real communicative desire, and their subjective initiative and creative thinking are limited. The lag of writing teaching has resulted in a serious imbalance between the input and the output, affecting the students' language knowledge internalization. In this case, the Length Approach, advocated by Professor Wang Chuming, comes into being and brings a new enlightenment to the college English writing teaching.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of the new curriculum standard reform of senior high school English, English teaching based on the core quality of English teaching has become one of the important goals of senior high school English teaching. Based on the current situation and practice of senior high school English writing teaching, this paper analyzes a series of problems existing in senior high school English teaching and their causes, and holds that the teaching method of reading and writing is an effective means to improve the English writing ability of senior high school students. One can read and write with the help of combination of expansion of high school students in the English language knowledge, which can cultivates English thinking ability. Abstract:The present paper takes a problematizational perspective and looks at questions raised by language instructors at two national conferences for innovative writing in China.In relation to these questions,theoretical discussions and practical solutions are given by turning to a new teaching framework—"Experience English Writing".This paper consists of five parts.In the first part,the background information concerning this study is introduced.Then a typological treatment of the questions collected is made,forming a question-driven database for detailed analysis.In the third part,these questions are closely examined at two levels of analyses,theoretical and practical.To enhance the relevance of discussion,a case study for innovative teaching is provided in the fourth part.Closing remarks are given in the fifth part,which further elaborates the challenging situation language instructors are currently facing in the teaching of English writing.

Abstract:This paper first presents in rather detail the project of a survey on the problems existing in English writing.The data are collected from 537 Chinese students of three colleges.The survey was conducted following Hasan's theory of Generic Structure Potential.The result confirms our hypothesis that Chinese college students do not have strong genre awareness apart from having problems in lexis,grammar and other aspects.This strengthens our belief that students need to start writing at the discourse level and to be exposed to more practical genres,and that both teachers and students need particularly to build up genre awareness.

Abstract:"English Reading" is a professional compulsory course combining theory with practice. This course covers English language knowledge, culture and literature knowledge, national knowledge, cross-cultural communication knowledge, basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, etc., aiming to improve students' reading efficiency and ability to obtain main information, especially text appreciation, rhetoric and critical thinking ability. The task of the lesson is to cultivate students' ability of discourse analysis, semantic appreciation, logical thinking, independent thinking and proficient communication, so as to make them become "application-oriented talents” of high-quality and with innovative consciousness and creative ability". The study aimed to correlate the reading comprehension of English linguistic students, then inform some pedagogical implications for the teaching of reading comprehension (Cuc Thi Kim Pham, 2017). Through the data analysis of an authoritative reading test officially organized by the university, the author found that a large proportion of students in sophomore year failed to perform well in the test and did not demonstrate excellent reading skills. The reasons are as follows: firstly, the "teacher-led role" is neglected in reading teaching; Secondly, students ignore discourse analysis in reading; thirdly, the students' understanding of vocabulary is limited to the meaning of completely equivalent Chinese; Fourth: Grammatical awareness is not strong. The author finds out the problems that students have in reading, and combines relevant cases to conduct in-depth discussions on these issues.

Abstract:This study investigates the interplay of English language motivation, writing strategies, and proficiency among non-English major Chinese university students. A mixed-methods approach reveals a moderate positive correlation between these factors, with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and translation strategies standing out as particularly impactful. The study further uncovers distinctive motivational, strategic, and proficiency patterns among different student groups, including sex, school type, academic year, and major divisions. Based on these findings, the Motivation-Strategy-Proficiency-based Writing Enhancement Program (MSP-WEP) is proposed to holistically improve academic writing skills. This research contributes to the understanding of factors affecting English academic writing proficiency in non-English major students and provides a practical program for educators, with a call for future research into the program’s efficacy in diverse learning contexts.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern technology, it is imperative for English Educators to implement the feasible teaching strategy to promote teaching competence in college English. According the POA, writing is regarded as an output capability, furthermore, assessment is a critical procedure in teaching practice. What’s more, process approach takes writing as a recursive mental cognitive process, creative thinking process and social interactive process. Therefore, we should attach great significance to the advancement of students’ writing competence. Consequently, Teacher-Student Collaborative Assessment (TSCA) can be utilized to evaluate students’ feedback in a scientific and comprehensive way. Specifically speaking, student’s composition can be examined in terms of diversified approaches including teacher assessment, self-assessment, peer assessment and automated assessment. Abstract:The “large unit, overall context and major task” teaching mode marks the transformation of English teaching. Under the new situation of cultural conflicts, integration and innovation, the establishment of English learning task groups with English core competence as the guideline and students’ English practice as the focus is an innovative teaching mode to meet the demands of the times, namely “influencing people through culture and cultivating people via learning”. Applying the teaching mode of “large unit, overall context and major task” to the writing teaching can enrich the text contents and imbue teaching with poetic charm. Taking “Cultural Relics: Topic Writing Based on Modular Review” in the reading section in Unit 1 of Oxford High School English Book 2 as an example, this paper introduces how the teacher presents the topic writing method through the examples in the textbook, which takes the textbook as the foundation, focuses on the contents of the whole unit, and transcends the text by secondary processing, and finally generates the materials required in teaching. This method aims to encourage students to learn from words to sentences and then to paragraphs by way of gradation and progress with tiered difficulty. Text processing based on profound understanding strengthens students’ impression and memory, displaying a new teaching perspective for the writing.
