Abstract:The paper simulated the fracture process of a thin rock plate sample containing a central slit under uniaxial compression by finite element analysis for strain-softening elasto-plastic material. The microcrack in the rock is considered as irreversible plastic deformation and it is the microfracture process in the rock that induces the strain softening behavior. The constitutive ralation used is associated with the elastoplastic Drucker-Prager yield condition having arbitrary hardening and softening law. The yield function f(σ, к) iswhere l1 is the first invariant of the stress tensor and J2 is the second invariant of the stress deviator tensor, α and к are taken to be functions of the plastic internal variable к which is chosen to be the plastic volumetric strain θP, i.e. α=α(θp), K = K(θp). α, K as well as the Young's modulus E are obtained by fitting the uniaxial compressive curve of the intact rock sample made of the same material. The experimental results obtained by Wang et al.[2] show that near the tips of the slit tensile cracks occur first, their extensions gradually bend toward the axial direction and become stabilized. As the compressive stress increases, conjugate shear fractures appear in the direction opposite the tensile cracks. They related the phenomenon to the strain softening behavior near the tip of the slit. The present mathematical model is used to calculate the process and obtain the same result. It is therefore concluded that the finite element analysis adopted here is a feasible tool in studying the fracture process of rock type materials.
