Abstract:Although research into humour in education contexts has increased sharply over the past decade, there are still relatively few studies related to its impact on specific elements of classroom dynamics such as teaching, student/teacher interaction, and classroom management. Teachers’ perceptions of the use of humour as a teaching, interaction, and management tool likely shape the educational experiences for all stakeholders. This study used online discussions to explore perceptions among kindergarten through grade 12 (K–12) teachers of the use of humour as a teaching, interaction, and management strategy in the classroom. These discourses revealed participating teachers (n = 31) have some understanding of how humour impacts teaching and learning, students’ engagement and motivation, teachers’ confidence and interaction with students, and various challenges and resistances to the use of humour in the classroom. Findings indicated that while most participating teachers could demonstrate examples of their use of humour in the classroom, few appeared to perceive humour as a structured classroom strategy. Additionally, the study revealed that while participating teachers are open to the idea of using humour in the classroom, most do not deliberately or strategically include it in the planning or implementation of their lessons. Participants’ responses consistently showed that humour “just happened” in the classroom and that it was part of a teacher’s responsibility to ensure that humour did not distract from learning activities. Participating teachers identified many more negative than positive factors that influenced their decisions about using humour in the classroom.

Abstract:Introduction. The need for research is due to the deterioration of the psychological well-being of students in the conditions of periodic introduction of self-isolation and distance learning. Teachers of higher education point out that, even after returning to the traditional format of education, many students continue to experience anxiety and tension, especially when performing tasks aimed at teaching oral foreign language speech. To ease such tension and overcome the difficulties caused by it, it is necessary to use various forms of humor in the learning process. Theoretical analysis. The article discusses theoretical approaches to the use of humor in teaching and summarizes the experience of using different types of humor in the practice of teaching English to future IT professionals. Empirical analysis. The empirical research method has been used in the form of a group survey of 67 1st–year students on the basis of SPbSUT. The research task is to find out how students feel about the use of humor in foreign language classes. Conclusion. This study confirms that most students (86%) support the use of humor in classes at the university and note its positive impact. In addition, according to the results of the survey, it was revealed which forms of humor students consider to be the most effective in teaching a foreign language, and which are considered unacceptable by them.
Appropriate and relevant humour in the university classroom: insights from teachers and students

Abstract:When used for the purpose of teaching and learning, humour must be relevant and appropriate to the context. However, what constitutes appropriate and relevant humour is unclear. Past studies have focussed mostly on classifying appropriate and relevant types of humour. Additionally, students’ and teachers’ perceptions of what constitutes appropriate and relevant humour are likely to differ, meaning that the effectiveness of teachers’ humour use may vary depending on the context. With this in mind, it is important to consider teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the appropriateness and relevance of humour. For this paper, five award-winning teachers and 10 students were interviewed regarding their perceptions and experiences of the use of humour in university teaching. Four themes were identified that relate to teachers’ and students’ perceptions regarding the appropriateness of humour: Appropriate humour is relevant humour; Appropriate humour happens at a suitable time and in a suitable manner; Appropriate humour enhances teachers’ credibility; and Inappropriate humour is disrespectful humour. Three themes were identified related to the relevance of humour: Relevant humour is related to the learning content; Relevant humour is related to daily experiences in life; and Irrelevant humour is humour that students do not understand. On the basis of this study, this paper offers pedagogical suggestions for teachers who wish to use humour effectively by taking into consideration what humour is considered appropriate/inappropriate and relevant/irrelevant. Abstract:This study determined the Junior High School English teachers' use of humor as a teaching strategy in the classroom. The subjects of the study were the 31 English teachers and 318 Grade 10 students of Batangas National High School. It also sought to find out if there is a significant difference between English teachers’ use of humor in the classroom and students’ perception on the advantages and disadvantages of humor in the English classroom. The descriptive method of the study was utilized by the researchers with selfadministered questionnaires which served as the primary data gathering instrument. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were the statistical tests used to achieve the objectives of the study. The results have shown that there is a significant difference in the English teachers’ use of humor in the classroom when grouped according to years of teaching experience and educational attainment. Additionally, there is a significant difference in the students’ perception on the advantages of humor in the classroom when students are grouped according to their sex and academic performance. There is no significant difference in the students’ perception on the disadvantages of humor in the classroom when they are grouped according to their sex. However, there is a significant difference when students are grouped according to their academic performance.

Abstract:This study delved into the relationship between Teacher Humor Style and the Attention Span of Grade 7 Students. Utilizing a descriptive-correlation research design, the researcher conducted a comprehensive exploration, employing surveys to gather perceptions from students and statistical analyses to unravel the interplay between humor and attention. The findings reveal a moderately extensive use of humor across various indicators, fostering an engaging and enjoyable learning environment. The students demonstrated an extensive duration of focus and active participation, complemented by swift attention recapture abilities. Contextually relevant humor, including puns and subject-related jokes, emerged as a key component of this positive classroom atmosphere. The study also employed a Multiple Linear Regression Model, showcasing the significant influence of various humor indicators on attention span. Recommendations extend to the Department of Education, encouraging the integration of humor-focused professional development for educators. School heads are urged to foster a positive school culture supportive of diverse humor strategies. Teachers are recommended to adopt a reflective approach, continually adjusting their humor strategies based on student responses. For students, an awareness of the positive impact of humor on learning experiences is highlighted. Future researchers are encouraged to delve deeper into cultural nuances and conduct longitudinal studies to observe sustained impacts.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to elicit insight on how humour may support mental health from Arthur Asa Berger, Professor Emeritus at San Francisco State University, author of more than 150 articles and 90 books, many on humour and humorous artist. Design/methodology/approach This case study, followed by a 10-question interview, intentionally embraces visual autobiography to present Arthur's creative humorous contributions. Findings Arthur conveys the importance of humour, not so much from joke-telling, which can be problematic, but in fun conversations, witty remarks and puns. We learn of his 45 humour techniques, and ways to apply humour in teaching, writing and drawing for therapeutic benefit. Research limitations/implications This is a personal narrative, albeit from someone who has been academically and personally involved with humour for over 60 years. Practical implications Evidence of the benefits of humour for mental health is mounting. Appreciating and harnessing humour, including with the 45 humour techniques, whenever you can, is recommended. Social implications Humour supports relationship building and social inclusion. Social humour is best when it amuses others, offers positive insights into social relationships and is life affirming to both the humourist and their audience. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, Arthur was the first to publish a PhD dissertation on a comic strip and has been at the vanguard of humour application in teaching, academic writing, drawing, popular comedy and humorous murder mysteries for decades. Arthur will be 90 years old in 2023.

Abstract:The article reflects the description of application of humorous media products at preschool educational institutions and primary schools from the perspective of the analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature. Humorous media products are viewed as multifunctional media tools used for the development of motivation, thinking, imagination, creativity and communication skills in children. Besides, they serve for the leisure time organization purposes, national-patriotic and moral education, health saving, pedagogical diagnostics, as well as for preventive purposes, in particular to prevent aggressive behavior. Also, the use of humorous media products is considered to be an effective way to reduce the level of stress and anxiety in children in the challenging conditions of military invasion. Frequency of application of humorous media products in the interaction with children by the primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers has been diagnosed and analyzed. There have been defined the ways to improve training of future primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers at the institutions of higher education considering the application of humorous media products. They include the following forms: lectures "The problem of humor in the history of pedagogy", "Using humorous media tools for the preschoolers speech development", "Formation of transition skills of primary school students by means analysis of media with humorous potential", "Laughter therapy and health saving of preschool and primary school age children", "Humor therapy in work with children in crisis situations" in the course of study of the disciplines: "Actual problems of preschool education", "Organization of preschoolers game activities", "Introduction to pedagogy”, "Pedagogical technologies at primary school", etc.; methods: interactive, game, project; means: visual (books, periodicals), audial (audio fairy tales, etc.), audiovisual (cartoons). Ideas worth to be used at preschool educational institutions and primary schools have been identified. They refer formation of children’s ability to distinguish between jokes and mockery; make jokes only in appropriate situation; to reveal the comic and the serious, the fictional and the real in humorous media products.

Abstract:Objective: To explore nursing educators' perceptions about using humour as a teaching strategy in the classroom setting. Study design: Qualitative study. Place and Duration of the Study: Shifa College of Nursing, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad, Pakistan, from September 2021 to January 2022. Methodology: Twelve educators from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) programme were purposefully selected for their rich and expressive insights. Institutional Review Board approval was obtained, and participants provided informed consent with the option to terminate interviews at any time. Data were collected and analysed simultaneously using content analysis, with rigour maintained per Lincoln and Guba's 1985 trustworthiness framework. Results: The study revealed four key categories from educators' perspectives on using humour as a teaching strategy. First was the humour and learning, with innate vs. acquired competency and teaching phases. Second was the inside track, encompassing revitalisation, critical thinking, eco-friendliness, encouragement culture, self-esteem, and confidence. Third was provocation; with subcategories of language and student diversity. Fourth was the way forward addressed humour applicability and classification. Conclusion: The study explored the importance of humour as a teaching strategy in the classroom, stressing the need to consider context, subject matter, and diverse student needs. It underscores a balanced approach that engages students and fosters inclusivity. The findings are individual differences. Future research should explore the long-term impact and how training can help teachers effectively using humour as a teaching tool. Humour-themed holistic learning processes in a Finnish primary school

Abstract:Although humour in education has shown positive research results, its use in Finnish classrooms is not common and is not included in Finland’s curricula. In this study, pupils’ humour is utilised as part of a holistic learning process in Finnish primary education. Implementing holistic learning processes means focusing on child-centredness, dissolving subject boundaries and concentrating on learning-to-learn skills, overall growth and traditional subject-learning goals. As a framework for the learning process, this study follows the guidelines of the Narratives and Crafts model, which aims to connect arts-based activities with different themes. This study aims to investigate the role of humour in the context of an arts-based learning process and to assess opportunities for its more conscious use in learning. The data were taken from the outcomes of 36 pupils during a holistic learning process and were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results indicated that creative or arts-based activities and humour worked well together as a means for pupils to incorporate their inner thoughts and personal perceptions into their assignments. Furthermore, humour can be a source of a long-term process, and expressions of pupils’ humour can be steered by assignments and preliminary materials, as well as by collaboration with other pupils and the teacher. However, teachers should have more research-based information about humour in the classroom and about the importance of humour in the community and for pupils.

Abstract:Humor is widely recognized as an effective method for promoting language acquisition and enhancing language skills. Using humor in language training can help students feel more at ease, reduce tension, and encourage good emotions, all of which have a favorable effect on their motivation and engagement. In language-learning environments, linguistic jokes are one sort of humor that has not been well investigated. This study uses descriptive qualitative methodologies to investigate the advantages of linguistic jokes in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Data were gathered for the study from interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations involving EFL students. The results show that language learners gain from using linguistic jokes in EFL classes in several ways, including greater motivation, increased engagement, improved communication skills, and decreased anxiety. The study also emphasizes how humour can improve the learning environment by encouraging greater participation and a sense of belonging among students. The qualitative data show that learners have good attitudes toward using humour in language acquisition, which lends credence to these findings. The study proposes that EFL teachers utilize humour as a teaching method to facilitate language learning and develop language skills. It also finds that including linguistic jokes in EFL classrooms can benefit language learners in various ways.

Abstract:Humour is discussed in this article in relation to drama education in Ireland. Humour is identified as a potentially important feature of children's engagement in drama, and this is explained by an exploration of humour theory. Examples of how humour positively affects the experience of drama participation are also considered. The discussion is in the context of drama curriculum review in the Republic of Ireland and the article identifies an over emphasis on teacher-centric, talk based conventions which has emerged in practice. A more artistic experience which enables children to communicate naturally, and thus humorously, is proposed.

Abstract:Previous studies have highlighted the benefits of pedagogical conversational agents using socially-oriented conversation with students. In this work, we examine the effects of a conversational agent's use of affiliative and self-defeating humour -- considered conducive to social well-being and enhancing interpersonal relationships -- on learners' perception of the agent and attitudes towards the task. Using a between-subjects protocol, 58 participants taught a conversational agent about rock classification using a learning-by-teaching platform, the Curiosity Notebook. While all agents were curious and enthusiastic, the style of humour was manipulated such that the agent either expressed an affiliative style, a self-defeating style, or no humour. Results demonstrate that affiliative humour can significantly increase motivation and effort, while self-defeating humour, although enhancing effort, negatively impacts enjoyment. Findings further highlight the importance of understanding learner characteristics when using humour.

Abstract:The ability to powerfully and persuasively impact the audience is an important part of one’s career and life. Humor in public speaking is an effective way to inform, persuade and connect with the audience. In this paper, I apply the framework of analyzing context in terms of three dimensions - physical, temporal and experiential, to study humor use in public speaking. The results of the analysis of ten speech samples show that in the selected public speeches, non-verbal elements play an important role in the humor practice based on the physical contextual dimension. The temporal contextual dimension is most widely utilized in humor design. Humor based on the experiential contextual dimension reaches higher level of efficiency. Humor that employs a combination of different contextual dimensions increases the value of the intended effects.

Abstract:Online learning burnout poses a paramount concern due to its detrimental influence on students' academic cognitive learning and mental health. Aiming to explore the association between teacher humour (content-related and content-unrelated) and online learning burnout, this study surveyed 585 college students enrolled in various online courses. The results show that teacher humour, regardless of its relevance to the course content, does not directly correlate with online learning burnout. However, both types of humour can indirectly relate to burnout through enjoyment and boredom. Content-related humour exhibits a negative correlation with boredom and a positive relationship with enjoyment. In contrast, content-unrelated humour is positively correlated with boredom. These findings underscore that teachers should be cautious about employing humour in online teaching because not all forms of humour can play a positive role. This study also contributes to inspiring teachers to integrate content-related humour with online teaching, laying a foundation for future research.

Abstract:Humor is applied in pedagogy to create a positive learning environment. Recent research focuses on the theories, effects, individual differences, and qualitative aspects of humor for instruction. However, there is a lack of studies focusing on quantitative features. Therefore, this research explored the quantitative characteristics of instructional humor in a naturalistic setting and applied techniques from natural language processing (NLP). This paper describes the results of two studies. The first study focused on instructional humor frequency and the placement of humor, while the linguistic features of instructional humor and non-instructional humor were compared in the second study. Two corpora were used in this research: TED Talks and user-submitted jokes from “stupidstuff.org” The results found that educators used humor 12.92 times for popular talks, while less popular talks only had 3.92 times. Humor is also more commonly placed during the first parts of the talk and lessens toward the end. There were also significant differences between the linguistic features of instructional and non-instructional humor in terms of readability scores and sentiment. These results provide a substantial update on quantitative instructional humor research and help educators understand how to use humor in the classroom in terms of quantitative and linguistic features.
Chinese teachers' use of humour in coping with stress

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the mentality of Chinese teachers regarding their use of humour in coping with stress. Specifically, the study investigated their frequency of use of humour in coping with stress as compared to other coping styles and their perceptions about the relationship of humour with other coping styles. Data were collected from a sample of 789 Chinese teachers holding teaching posts at local Hong Kong secondary schools. Based on responses made to the COPE questionnaire, there was evidence that Chinese teachers had a lower frequency of use of humour as compared to other coping styles. As suggested by the results of a factor analysis, there was a perception among Chinese teachers that the use of humour was related more closely to escaping and/or avoidance as coping strategies, but more differentiable from problem-focused/task-oriented and emotional/social coping. It is interesting to find that the results of our study echoed those of a previous crosscultural comparison between Chinese and Canadian university students, in which the Chinese university students reported less use of humour in coping with stress than did their Canadian counterparts. These results have provided some empirical support for the notion that "humor has been traditionally given little respect in Chinese culture mainly due to the Confucian emphasis on keeping proper manners in social interactions" (Yue, 2010, p. 403). As teachers in Chinese societies are regarded as persons who are full of wisdom and capable of problem-solving, it is expected that they should act as role models to their students. These social expectations on Chinese teachers could further mould their perceptions on the use of humour in coping with stress.

Through combining humor and irony, he makes a relentless expose and criticism of the ugly phenomena in American social life. Humor is a unique way of thinking in his mind; he used humor to bring laugh to human. At the same time, he mercilessly criticized the ugly social reality, a profound reflection of the human condition in the world of metaphysical philosophy explores. The excellent satirical art in a number of his works showed, not only became an independent school at the time of the American literature, but also had a profound impact on the future of American literature. In this article, the author uses humor as a clue, and narrates the art of humor in Mark Twain's classic novels, the author will describe about the specific language and writing techniques from some classic novels of Mark Twain, to explore the art of humor embodied in the novel and the consequences of humor, so as to let the readers have a more intuitive and profound understanding of Mark Twain's novels, and also show the expression of noble tribute to Mark Twain for his outstanding achievement.

Abstract:Throughout the years, a lot of research has been looking at the significance of effective atmosphere in second language classrooms. We often overlook the fact that humour is a vital element in attaining a supportive learning environment that can benefit students. There is limited research conducted on the effectiveness of the use of humour in ESL classroom, especially in the context of motivating the students to learn, in which the students are used as the indicator and method in gaining insights as they are the ones who experienced the learning process. Thus, this study was conducted to look at students’ views towards the effects of humour on their intrinsic motivation to learn English. A survey was conducted using questionnaires adapted from Deci & Ryan’s (2003) Intrinsic Motivation Inventory Test (IMI) on 70 students of various programmes from the Faculty of Education, UiTM. The acquired data were then compared based on each of the programmes in the Faculty of Education, UiTM. The findings from this study revealed that majority of the respondents strongly agree that humour has positive effects on students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English. The positive responses received from the respondents indicate that humour is indeed an effective teaching tool in promoting intrinsic motivation in learning the second language.
