Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used in aero-engine because of their excellent properties such as low thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and abrasion resistance. TBCs can effectively protect the hot end parts made of nickel-based superalloys. The service temperature and service life of the hot end components are improved, and the efficiency of the gas engine is increased. Compared with traditional thermal barrier coating materials, high entropy alloys and high entropy ceramic have better thermal stability, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and phase stability, which have become a research hotspot of new TBCs materials for aero-engines. The definition and connotation of high entropy alloys are summarized. The research status of high entropy thermal barrier coatings is introduced, including coatings' design principles and preparation technologies, domestic and abroad development status, and the research and application prospect of high entropy thermal barrier coatings are prospected

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) can effectively protect the alloy substrate of hot components in aeroengines or land-based gas turbines by the thermal insulation and corrosion/erosion resistance of the ceramic top coat. However, the continuous pursuit of a higher operating temperature leads to degradation, delamination, and premature failure of the top coat. Both new ceramic materials and new coating structures must be developed to meet the demand for future advanced TBC systems. In this paper, the latest progress of some new ceramic materials is first reviewed. Then, a comprehensive spalling mechanism of the ceramic top coat is summarized to understand the dependence of lifetime on various factors such as oxidation scale growth, ceramic sintering, erosion, and calcium-magnesium-aluminium-silicate (CMAS) molten salt corrosion. Finally, new structural design methods for high-performance TBCs are discussed from the perspectives of lamellar, columnar, and nanostructure inclusions. The latest developments of ceramic top coat will be presented in terms of material selection, structural design, and failure mechanism, and the comprehensive guidance will be provided for the development of next-generation advanced TBCs with higher temperature resistance, better thermal insulation, and longer lifetime.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials have attracted great interest in engineering applications, especially in thermal barrier coating. As the operating temperature of next generation aero-engines raises dramatically, new challenges are posed to thermal insulation and lifespan of current thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop higher performance nanostructured thermal barrier coating. Pointing at the nanostructured thermal barrier coating, this work evaluated the whole life cycle of coating materials-coating preparation-failure mechanism-performance improvement. Firstly, as candidates for next generation nanostructured thermal barrier coating materials, perovskite, pyrochlore, magnetoplumbite, and high-entropy ceramics were emphasized. Different preparation methods of nano-coatings, the advantages and disadvantages as well as applicability were introduced. The failure mechanisms of nano thermal barrier coating systems were further revealed, including residual stress, sintering failure, erosion and corrosion cracking, and thermally-grown oxide (TGO) growth. Finally, performance improvement strategies were proposed to provide a theoretical basis and contribute to the development of advanced gas turbines.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are primarily utilized to give thermal insulation to metallic components like turbine blades, vanes, in gas turbines (GT) and in the different components of internal combustion (IC) engines such as piston crown. The major degradation mechanisms that required to be studied for the design of high performance TBCs are hot corrosion (H-C) and erosion. From last two decades, researchers have been focused to solve this problem and are still working in-depth to minimize the H-C and erosion rates of TBCs using various surface modification methods. This review work is an attempt to inquest the desirable microstructural and mechanical features in different processed TBCs which are essential to combat H-C and erosion of TBCs. Also the aviation and automobile sector is seeking alternatives to minimize emissions from aircrafts and automobiles while maintaining or enhancing current GT and IC engine power and efficiency. TBCs like Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) assists in raising the operating temperatures as increased temperatures of combustion results in better combustion, thereby decreasing emissions. The findings of this study offer in-depth insights into the role of TBCs in reducing harmful emissions. At last challenges during fabrication of TBCs and scope for future work are also discussed.

Abstract:This review offers a comprehensive analysis of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) applied to metallic materials. By reviewing the recent literature, this paper reports on a collection of technical information, involving the structure and role of TBCs, various materials and coating processes, as well as the mechanisms involved in the durability and failure of TBCs. Although TBCs have been successfully utilized in advanced applications for nearly five decades, they continue to be a subject of keen interest and ongoing study in the world of materials science, with overviews of the field's evolution remaining ever relevant. Thus, this paper outlines the current requirements of the main application areas of TBCs (aerospace, power generation and the automotive and naval industries) and the properties and resistance to thermal, mechanical and chemical stress of the different types of materials used, such as zirconates, niobates, tantalates or mullite. Additionally, recent approaches in the literature, such as high-entropy coatings and multilayer coatings, are presented and discussed. By analyzing the failure processes of TBCs, issues related to delamination, spallation, erosion and oxidation are revealed. Integrating TBCs with the latest generations of superalloys, as well as examining heat transfer mechanisms, could represent key areas for in-depth study.

Abstract:The thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are used as protective coatings for aircraft and power generation gas engine. During the last few years this technology has been introduced to the hottest parts of gas turbine. There are three advanced technologies for advanced aero-engine, the film cooling technology, single crystal superalloys and TBCs. The TBCs systems are multiplayer material systems. The material properties are not easily determined, such as Young's modulus of the top-coating of TBCs. Using the resonant frequency and the laminated plate theory, the Young's modulus of APS TBCs was gotten from room temperature to 1150℃. Using a commercial finite-element program, the model geometry is that of a solid cylinder. The interface region between bond coat and TBCs is modeled with a sinusoidal geometry. The temperature was cycled over a range from 50℃ to 1050℃.The fatigue life of TBCs was predicated.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are a fundamental technology used in high-temperature applications to protect superalloy substrate components. However, extreme high-temperature environments present many challenges for TBCs, such as the degradation of their thermal and mechanical properties. Hence, highly insulating, long-life TBCs must be developed to meet higher industrial efficiency. This paper reviews the main factors influencing the thermal insulation performance of TBCs, such as material, coating thickness, and structure. The heat transfer mechanism of the coating is summarized, and the degradation mechanism of the thermal insulation is analyzed from the perspective of the coating structure. Finally, the recent advances in improving the thermal insulation and lifetime of coatings are reviewed in terms of advanced materials and structural design, which will benefit advanced TBCs in future engineering applications and provide guidance for the next generation of high thermal insulating TBCs.

Abstract:In the past decades, the durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) has been extensively studied. The majority of researches emphasized the problem of oxidation, corrosion, and erosion induced by foreign object damage (FOD). TBCs with low thermal conductivity are usually coated on the hot-section components of the aircraft engine. The main composition of the TBCs is top-coat, which is usually regarded as a wear-resistant and heat-insulating layer, and it will significantly improve the working temperature of the hot-section components of the aircraft engine. The application of TBCs are serviced under a complex and rigid environment. The external parts of the TBCs are subjected to high-temperature and high-pressure loading, and the inner parts of the TBCs have a large thermal stress due to the different physical properties between the adjacent layers of the TBCs. To improve the heat efficiency of the hot-section components of aircraft engines, the working temperature of the TBCs should be improved further, which will result in the failure mechanism becoming more and more complicated for TBCs; thus, the current study is focusing on reviewing the failure mechanism of the TBCs when they are serviced under the actual high temperature conditions. Finite element simulation is an important method to study the failure mechanism of the TBCs, especially under some extremely rigid environments, which the experimental method cannot realize. In this paper, the research progress of the failure mechanism of TBCs at high temperature via finite element modeling is systematically reviewed.

Abstract:With the rising demands of industry to increase the working temperature of gas turbine blades and internal combustion engines, thermal barrier coatings (TBC) were found to be an effective way to further enhance the lifetime of aero components through the improvement of mechanical properties and oxidation-resistance. Thus, this paper aims to review coating technologies with special emphasis on plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings (PS), and those produced by physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. Each technology was assessed in terms of its effectiveness to enhance the mechanical response and oxidation resistance of nickel-based parts working at high temperature. The effect of coating technology on mechanical strength, hardness, fatigue and creep of nickel alloys was discussed to reveal the potential candidates for future applications in aggressive environments.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used in turbine blades of aeronautics, astronautics and nuclear reactors for the purpose of insulation from hot gas stream and protection of metallic substrate. However, the gas-turbine engines are under the threat of premature TBCs failures, such as fracture and spallation during service. The experimental measurement methods of mechanical properties of TBCs have become the major tasks. The research progresses of TBCs are reviewed, including the origins of misfit stresses leading to TBCs failure, the experimental measurement methods and systems on mechanical properties of TBCs, the thermography technique for the non-destructive detecting of interfacial spallation of TBCs, the life prediction of TBCs and the shortages in the current researches as well as future development of TBCs.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are applied widely in the field of aviation. The physical and mechanical properties of single top coatings are significant for the numerical simulation and the prediction of service life of turbine blades. In this research, a new method of fabricating thick single top coatings was performed. In order to investigate the high temperature behavior of the coating materials, three groups of heat treatment temperature (1200°C, 1400°C and 1600°C) were implemented to specimens. The physical and mechanical properties of plasma-sprayed (PS) TBCs with different heat treatment times (HTTs) were tested at room temperature. The Young's modulus of TBCs at room temperature increased with the heat treatment time (HTT), while decreased with the porosity. The relationships between Young's modulus and porosity of all three temperatures were linear approximately.

Abstract:Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play a pivotal role in protecting the hot structures of modern turbine engines in aerospace as well as utility applications. To meet the increasing efficiency of gas turbine technology, worldwide research is focused on designing new architecture of TBCs. These TBCs are mainly fabricated by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) as it is more economical over the electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) technology. Notably, bi-layered, multi-layered and functionally graded TBC structures are recognized as favorable designs to obtain adequate coating performance and durability. In this regard, an attempt has been made in this article to highlight the structure, characteristics, limitations and future prospects of bi-layered, multi-layered and functionally graded TBC systems fabricated using plasma spraying and its allied techniques like suspension plasma spray (SPS), solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) and plasma spray –physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD).

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. Internal Combustion (IC) engines require Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) to preserve their effectiveness and performance. By coating engine parts with TBCs, thermal fatigue and environmental heat loss may be minimised. To reduce heat loss in IC engines during the combustion stage, piston thermal barrier coating is extremely beneficial. Additionally, it is well known that power plants with higher energy efficiency tend to operate their gas turbines at higher operating temperatures. To produce TBCs for the thermal design of gas turbines and diesel engines with higher performance, an in-depth study on the thermophysical properties of TBCs is required. This article presents an experimental investigation into the combined effect of gas turbine blades and diesel engine pistons coated with a heat barrier, utilising two distinct Thermal Barrier Coatings. Initially, numerical calculations are used to assess the wall heat transfer model's ability to control temperature and density. The piston and blade top surfaces received plasma-sprayed, Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) with different material combinations on the piston and blades are evaluated. The Finite Element Method is developed for the coating of the ideal thickness to analyse the failure mechanism of the TBC sample. To evaluate the fatigue residual lifespan of TBC pistons, as well as blades in high-power engines, the authors also created a relevant vector Machine-based lifetime prediction model. The CO, HC and NOx emissions, as well as the fuel depletion and braking thermal efficiency, are used to calculate the performance analysis of the coated piston and blades. The results demonstrated improved thermal process endurance and decreased thermal conductivity by 28% when compared to YSZ using the RVM method respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel concept in the field of phase composite ceramics has been proposed and applied for creating the topcoats of durable thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), which is one of the most critical technologies for advanced high-efficiency gas turbine engines in extreme environments. The phase composite ceramic TBCs were designed to demonstrate superior and comprehensive performance-related merits, benefits, and advantages over conventional single-phase TBCs with a topcoat of 8YSZ or Gd2Zr2O7, including thermal phase stability, thermal shock durability, low thermal conductivity, and solid particle erosion resistance. In this paper, we review and summarize the development work conducted so far related to the phase composite ceramic concept, coatings processing, and experimental investigation into TBC behaviors at elevated temperatures (typically, ≥1250 °C) using different evaluation and characterization methods, including isothermal sintering, a burner rig test, a solid particle-impinging erosion test, and a CMAS corrosion test. Two-phase (t'+c) zirconia-based TBCs demonstrated improved thermal shock and erosion resistance in comparison to conventional single-phase (t'), 8YSZ TBC, and Gd2Zr2O7 TBC, when used separately. Additionally, a triple-phase (t'+c+YAG) TBC sample demonstrated superior CMAS resistance. The TBC's damage modes and failure mechanisms for thermal phase stability, thermal cycling resistance, solid particle erosion behavior, and CMAS infiltration are also characterized and discussed in detail, in terms of microstructural characterization and performance evaluation.

Abstract:For more than 6 decades, thermal barrier coatings have been used to protect structural parts in both stationary and aviation gas turbines. These coatings allow the use of significant higher operation temperatures and hence increased efficiencies. In the 1970s, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was identified as outstanding material for this application. As major deposition technologies both electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) have been established. Although the topic is already rather old, there are still frequent activities ongoing to further improve the technology, both with respect to materials and microstructural issues also regarding the use of advanced coating technologies, especially in the field of thermal spray. The paper tries to summarize major developments in both fields, the materials and the processing focusing on thermal spray methods. The impact of both materials and processing are summarized by the results of burner rig tests for various systems. Furthermore, a short outlook on possible future directions of developments will be given.

Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1"><p class="a-plus-plus">High-insulation, long-life thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) decrease the service temperature of superalloys and improve the service life of gas turbines. Improvement in the thermal insulation properties of the coating mainly depends on the optimization of the TBC structure. An important challenge for TBCs is maintaining a high performance during thermal exposure without degradation, as the pore-rich structure of the topcoat would inevitably be transformed by sintering. A low-thermal-conductivity anti-sintering coating can overcome the trade-off between thermal insulation and sinter degradation. In this review, the design, preparation, and serviceability evaluation of a low-thermal-conductivity anti-sintering coating will be discussed. Furthermore, directions for potential development are introduced. Abstract:In the next-generation of turbine engines, improving the heat resistance and reducing the weight are the essential solutions to increasing the thermal efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Silicon-based ceramics (e.g., SiCf/SiC ceramics matrix composites (CMCs) and monolithic Si3N4) are the leading candidates for these applications because of their extreme light weight and superior heat resistance compared to the current Ni-based alloys. The main challenge of the Si-based ceramics is oxidation and volatilization of the silica in the high-temperature combustion gas environment with the water vapor and thereby its rapid recession. The most promising approach is protecting the surface of the ceramic matrix composites from the water vapor attack by an external environmental barrier coating (EBC) layer. Since the early 1990s, a lot of efforts have been made to develop suitable EBCs; however, no single material can satisfy all the EBC requirements. Thereby, the current EBC trends are directed to the development of multilayered EBCs, with different functions as a significant solution to prevent CMC recession and to maximize its performance for next engine generation. This paper discusses the history, current status, and future trends of EBC development not only in the world but also in Japan. Abstract:The multicomponent NiCoCrAlTaY coating as bond layer as well as the zirconia stabilized by yttrium oxide (YSZ) coating as top ceramic layer was deposited on duplex vane surface by plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) system. The thickness and microstructure of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) under the influence of duplex vane geometry were presented in this article. It has been proven that the entire surface of duplex vane was covered by NiCoCrAlTaY and YSZ coatings. The position with thickest coating was found close to the leading edge and trailing edge of the vane. In those places, the coating was approximately 80–100% thicker than in the other areas on duplex vane. The obtained results indicate that it is possible to manufacture the TBCs including metallic bond layer and top ceramic layer by PS-PVD process on multiple vanes for gas turbines.
