Abstract:Chiral mesoporous silica nanorods with aspect ratios from 1.5 to 4.5 were synthesized by using achiral cati-onic surfactant as template in dilute ammonia solution without additives.The chiral channels and helical morphology of the products were confirmed by using transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Furthermore,the oriented attachment growth of primary particles and the gradual twist phenomenon of nanorods were observed by TEMwith samples from different stages of the whole formation process.It was supposed that this special growth process played a pivotal role in the formation of chiral mesoporous nanorods.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica with three-dimensional (3D) bicontinuous cubic Ia-3d structure and fascinating caterpillar-like morphology was synthesized by using anionic surfactant N-lauroylsarcosine sodium (Sar-Na) as the template and 3-amionpropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) as the co-structure-directing agent (CSDA) with the aid of acetate. A phase transformation from high interfacial curvature 2D hexagonal to low interfacial curvature 3D cubic Ia-3d occurred in the presence of a proper amount of acetate. Other species of salts (excluding acetate) had the ability to induce the caterpillar-like morphology, but failed to induce the cubic Ia-3d mesostructure. Furthermore, [3-(2-aminoethyl)-aminopropyl]trimethoxysilane (DAPS) was also used as the CSDA to synthesize Ia-3d mesostructured silica under the aid of sodium acetate. After extraction of the anionic surfactants, amino and di-amine functionalized 3D bicontinuous cubic Ia-3d mesoporous silicas were obtained and used as supports to immobilize Pd nanoparticles for supported catalysts. The catalytic activity of the catalysts was tested by catalytic hydrogenation of allyl alcohol.

Abstract:Chirality is widely expressed in organic materials, perhaps most notably in biological molecules such as DNA, and in proteins, owing to the homochirality of their components ( d -sugars and l -amino acids). But the occurrence of large-scale chiral pores in inorganic materials is rare 1 . Although some progress has been made in strategies to synthesize helical and chiral zeolite-like materials 1 , 2 , 3 , the synthesis of enantiomerically pure mesoporous materials is a challenge that remains unsolved 4 . Here we report the surfactant-templated synthesis of ordered chiral mesoporous silica, together with a general approach for the structural analysis of chiral mesoporous crystals by electron microscopy. The material that we have synthesized has a twisted hexagonal rod-like morphology, with diameter 130–180 nm and length 1–6 µm. Transmission electron microscopy combined with computer simulations confirm the presence of hexagonally ordered chiral channels of 2.2 nm diameter winding around the central axis of the rods. Our findings could lead to new uses for mesoporous silica and other chiral pore materials in, for example, catalysis and separation media, where both shape selectivity and enantioselectivity 5 can be applied to the manufacturing of enantiomerically pure chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Chiral mesoporous silica (CMS) with highly ordered helical nano-sized channels was synthesized by using chiral anionic amphiphilic molecules (N-acyl-l-alanine) as template upon a co-structural-directing-agent (CSDA) method. Synthetic conditions, such as ionization degree of the surfactant, CSDA/surfactant molar ratio, reaction temperature, the carbon chain length, and the type of base that affect the mesostructure and morphology of the CMSs have been extensively studied. It was found that: (i) in the synthesis-space diagram of mesophases, the CMS mesostrucrue locates within the area of two dimensional (2D) hexagonal which is a neighbor of lamellar and bicontinuous Ia3¯d mesostructures; (ii) the generation of CMS demands very rigorous micellar curvature which was mainly controlled by the ionization degree of the surfactant controlled by acid addition amount, CSDA/surfactant molar ratio and the carbon chain length; (iii) the CMS can be synthesized in a wide reaction temperature range of 25–100°C; and (iv) the pore diameter of the CMS was decreased with decreasing size of the counterion.

Abstract:Chiral ordered mesoporous silica has been synthesized by using a chiral surfactant (N-myristoyl-L-alanine sodium salt) as a template, 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane as a co-structure directing agent, and tetraethoxylsilane as an inorganic source. The helicity and the morphology of the mesoporous silica are determined by the stirring rate during the chiral surfactant self-assembly (see Figure), providing new insight into the chiral self-assembly of molecules.

Abstract:Electrostatic interactions between cationic polyamine and anionic surfactant cause assembly to form composite micelles. The anionic surfactant/cationic polyamine composite micelles can then act as a template to co-assemble with silica precursors to form mesostructured silica. Mesoporous silicas with different mesostructures and morphologies were obtained by changing the synthesis temperature, the amounts of cationic polyelectrolyte or silica precursor and the species of anionic surfactant. This anionic surfactant/cationic polyamine composite micelle template method comprises a general method for synthesizing mesoporous silicas.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica molecular sieves have been prepared using nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 as template and tetraethylorthosilicate as silica source.The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD,N_2 adsorption-desorption isotherms,SEM,and TG-DTA methods.Characterization results indicate that these materials possess ordered mesoporous structure,high surface area and high pore volume.We also compared morphologies of samples synthesized under different conditions,and investigated the formation mechanism of these structures.

Abstract:Helical nanostructured silica was prepared by sol-gel method using a chiral cationic gelator cyclo(L-11-(N-methylimidazolium)undecylasapaginyl-L-phenylalanyl) perchlorate(11mimClO4) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride(CTAC) as templates.Field emitted scanning electron microscopy(FESEM) was utilized to characterize the shape,size and structure of the products obtained at different reaction conditions.By controlling the mass ratio of gelator to CTAC,mesoporous helical silica nanofibers was obtained.These mesoporous silica nanofibers were hundreds nm in length and 3.0 nm in inner-pore-diameter.

Abstract:Recently, ordered chiral mesoporous silica with a twisted hexagonal rod-like morphology and hexagonally ordered chiral channels has been synthesized by using chiral anionic surfactants as a liquid crystal template ( S. Che, Z. Liu, T. Ohsuna, K. Sakamoto, O. Terasaki and T. Tatsumi, Nature, 2004, 429, 281). In this work, we report an observation of hierarchically helical mesoporous silica nanofibers organized by the achiral cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide ( CTAB). These nanofibers ( diameter ranging around 100 - 300 nm) grew from a two-phase system (H2O, CTAB, HCl for the aqueous phase and tetraethylsiloxane (TEOS) in hexane for the oil phase). SEM and TEM characterizations were performed and the results indicate that these nanofibers possess rope-like twisted hexagonal morphology and helical ( chiral) mesoporous channels running inside winding around the fiber axis. These twisted hexagonal nanofibers could further curve spirally to form a second-level helical morphology ( hierarchically helical morphology). As no chiral molecules are used in the synthesis, the hierarchically helical morphology of nanofibers could be explained by the different kinds of topological defects existing in the silicate liquid crystal seeds formed in a diffusion-controlled kinetic process, and these defects could initiate and direct the growth of particular forms of mesostructured silica. Formation of the ordered chiral mesorporous silica would be expected to be a general phenomenon in the cooperative assembly between amphiphilic organic molecules ( templates) and inorganic species, no matter whether the templates are chiral or achiral.

Abstract:Silica mesoporous crystals with different morphologies were prepared based on the self-assembly of the gemini cationic surfactant [C16H33N+(CH3)2(CH2)3N+(CH3)3]Br2(C16-3-1) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in water under acidic condition. By controlling the kind of acids (H2SO4 or HCl), temperature and synthesis compositions, three well-ordered silica mesoporous crystals, cubic Fm3¯m, three-dimensional hexagonal P63/mmc and cubic Pm3¯n, with distinct morphologies were synthesized. In the synthesis system with H2SO4, the crystals changed the structure from Pm3¯n to Fm3¯m with decrease in acidity and increase in synthesis temperature; and in the synthesis with HCl, the crystals with Fm3¯m and P63/mmc were synthesized by changing the synthesis compositions, especially C16-3-1/H2O and C16-3-1/TEOS molar ratios.

Abstract:A\} new highly ordered mesostructured silica(possible space group \%Fm3m\%) was synthesized by \{using\} tri\|headgroup quaternary ammonium surfactant \{CH\-3(CH\-2)\-\{17\}N\++(CH\-3)\-2CH\-2CH\-2N\++(CH\-3)\-2CH\-2CH\-2\}CH\-2N\++(CH\-3)\-3\53Br\+-(C\-\{18\|2\|3\|1\}) under a basic condition. The cubic mesoporous silica product has an \{average\} pore size of 2.9 nm, a large BET specific surface area of 991 m\+2/g and a large pore volume of \{0.98 cm\+3/g\}.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica with Ia (3) over bard structure has been successfully prepared by using mixed surfactants of commercially available nonionic block copolymer P123 (EO(20)PO(70)EO(20)) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as structure-directing agents through an acid-catalyzed silica sol-gel process. XRD, TEM, and N(2) sorption measurements show that the products have highly ordered bicontinuous cubic mesostructure with high surface area (similar to 770 m(2)/g), large pore volume (similar to 1.5 cm(3)/g) and uniform pore size (similar to 10 nm). Effects of preparation parameters on the formation of the mesostructure have been extensively investigated. It is found that the molar ratios of SDS/P123 between 2.1 and 2.5 and that of silicic species to P123 in the range from 40 to 75 are favorable for the formation of highly ordered Ia (3) over bard mesostructure. Prolonging hydrothermal treatment time leads to almost unchanged cell parameters of the products, whereas there is obvious increase of the pore sizes and pore volume. The results show that resultant template-free mesoporous silica products have excellent thermal stability, and they are more stable in N2 atmosphere than in air. Morphologies of the resultant materials can be further controlled by adding inorganic salt (such as Na(2)SO(4)) into the mixed surfactants system. Coral- and petaline-like mesoporous silica with continuous skeletons can be obtained. Understanding this synthesis system might be useful for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Using sodium silicate as precursors and mixed surfactants of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as templates, rod-like mesoporous silica with hexagonal appearance were synthesized by controlling the pH value of solution during hydrolysis of ethylacetate. Results showed that at a molar ratio of 9:1 (CTAB to CTAC), regular rod-like shapes were obtained, and that with the decrease of the molar ratio of CTAB to CTAC (from 9:1 to 5.5:4.5), the amount and length of rod-like mesoporous silica decreased, but the amount of irregular particles increased. The diffraction peaks obtained with XRD were assigned to hexagonal symmetry. Type IV adsorption isotherm and an H1 hysteresis loop were observed in N2 adsorption–desorption curves.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:Anionic surfactants are used in greater volume than any other surfactants because of their highly potent detergency and low cost of manufacture. However, they have not been used as templates for synthesizing mesoporous silica. Here we show a templating route for preparing mesoporous silicas based on self-assembly of anionic surfactants and inorganic precursors. We use aminosilane or quaternized aminosilane as co-structure-directing agent (CSDA), which is different from previous pathways 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 . The alkoxysilane site of CSDA is co-condensed with inorganic precursors; the ammonium site of CSDA, attached to silicon atoms incorporated into the wall, electrostatically interacts with the anionic surfactants to produce well-ordered anionic-surfactant-templated mesoporous silicas (AMS). These have new structures with periodic modulations as well as two-dimensional hexagonal and lamellar phases. The periodic modulations may be caused by the coexistence of micelles that differ in size or curvature, possibly owing to local chirality. These mesoporous silicas provide a new family of mesoporous materials as well as shedding light on the structural behaviour of anionic surfactants.

Abstract:Anionic surfactant templated mesoporous silicas (AMSs) were prepared by using anionic surfactant as the template and aminopropylsiloxane or quaternized aminopropylsiloxane as the co-structure directing agent (CSDA).Diverse mesophases were discovered, from AMS-1 to 10, including the structures of three dimensional (3d-)hexagonal, 3d-tetragonal, 3d-cubic, 2d-hexagonal, bicontinuous cubic and lamellar. This novel route to prepare mesoporous materials also leads to the formation of chiral mesoporous silica with helical mesopores running inside,by using chiral anionic surfactant as the template, and the helicity and morphology can be simply controlled by the stirring rate during the synthesis. Mesoporous silicas, functionalized with amino and quaternary ammonium groups and with the various structures given above were obtained by extraction of surfactant. Finally, the formation mechanism of AMS was discussed from the view of the kinetics and energetics, respectively.
Anionic surfactant templated chiral nanospheres and their enantioselective adsorption

Abstract:Monodispersed chiral mesoporous spheres of nanometer size with high specific area and good thermal stability were synthesized using the chiral anionic surfactant (N-palmitoyl-L-phenylalanine) as a template according to the co-structure directing agent (CSDA) method. The resulting mesoporous nanospheres were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small angle X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen sorption experiments. The particle distribution was 190-210 nm with pore diameters of 3-4 nm. The enantioselective ability of this chiral mesoporous silica, after extraction of the chiral surfactant, was investigated by the selective adsorption of enantiomers and racemic solutions of alanine. The chiral selective adsorbability of this material type was shown by the asymmetric preferential adsorption of alanine as observed using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and was further verified in a racemic mixture of valine. It was found that the adsorption of L-alanine was higher than that of D-alanine on as-prepared chiral mesoporous materials with a chiral selectivity factor of 3.15, which generates new possibilities for enantiomeric separation and other enantioselective applications.

Abstract:Worm-like mesoporous silica materials are synthesized in both acidic (JLU-11) and neutral (JLU-12) media using a semi-fluorinated surfactant of CF3(CF2)5(EO)14 as a template. After introduction of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) in the synthesis, ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica materials (JLU-11(o) and JLU-12(o)) are obtained. The additive of TMB in the synthesis of mesoporous materials (JLU-11(o) and JLU-12(o)) is actually used as an effective agent for improving the order of mesostructure for the samples, rather than a swelling agent for the expansion of mesopore size, which is quite different from the results of mesoporous materials templated from hydrocarbon surfactants (MCM-41 and SBA-15). Furthermore, the ordering improvement of the samples is well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 isotherms.

Abstract:Chiral hollow tubule with chiral mesoporous channels was observed for the first time. The chiral tubule possessing a hexagonal cross section, with outer diameter of about 300 nm, and inter diameter of about 50 nm, was synthesized from a two-phase acidic system using achiral surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Furthermore, the helical meso-channels in the tubule exhibited zigzag lattice fringes along the tubule axis in TEM micrographs.
