Abstract:The degradation of phenol in aqueous solution by the dual-frequency ultrasound technology and the major affecting factors such as sound intensity, pH value of solution, initial concentration and medium temperature are studied.The results show that the dual-frequency ultrasound technology is superior to single frequency ultrasound technology in degradation of phenol.Within half an hour, the phenol removal rate by using dual-ultrasonic irradiation is obviously higher than the sum of the removal rates by using two separate single frequency ultrasonic irradiations.The synergetic effect of dual-frequency ultrasound is significant. In addition, adding Fenton reagent could accelerate the phenol removal rate.

Abstract:As a clean, sustainable and efficient technology of wastewater treatment, ultrasonic irradiation has gained special attention in wastewater treatment. It has been widely studied for degrading pollutants and enhancing biological treatment processes for wastewater treatment. This review focuses on the mechanism and updated information of ultrasonic technology to enhance biological treatment of wastewater. The mechanism involved in improving biological treatment by ultrasonic includes: 1) degradation of refractory substances and release carbon from sludges, 2) promotion of mass transfer and change of cell permeability, 3) facilitation of enzyme-catalyzed reactions and 4) influence of cell growth. Based on the above discussion, the effects of ultrasound on the enhancement of wastewater biological treatment processes can be categorized into indirect and direct ways. The indirect effect of ultrasonic waves in enhancing biological treatment is mainly achieved through the use of high-intensity ultrasonic waves. These waves can be used as a pretreatment to improve biodegradability of the wastewater. Moreover, the ultrasonic-treated sludge or its supernatant can serve as a carbon source for the treatment system. Low-intensity ultrasound is often employed to directly enhance the biological treatment of wastewater. The propose of this process is to improve activated sludge, domesticate polyphosphate-accumulating organisms, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and anammox bacteria, and achieve speedy start-up of partial nitrification and anammox. It has shown remarkable effects on maintaining stable operation, tolerating adverse conditions (i.e., low temperature, low C/N, etc.), resisting shock load (i.e., organic load, toxic load, etc.), and collapse recovery. These results indicate a promising future for biological wastewater treatment. Furthermore, virous ultrasonic reactor designs were presented, and their potential for engineering application was discussed.

Abstract:Phenolic wastewater is a common chemical wastewater which has a great harm to the environment and biological.As a good adsorbent,activated carbon is widely used in sewage treatment,especially in adsorption treatment of phenolic wastewater.The latest researches focus on the development and utilization of various carbonaceous materials,and explore the methods of preparation and modification to improve the phenolic adsorption properties of activated carbon.Some mechanism studies pay attention to the pore structure and surface functional groups of activated carbon,as well as the effect on the properties of phenolic adsorption.In this paper,the preparation and modification of activated carbon were introduced,the characteristics and mechanism of phenolic adsorption by activated carbon were summarized,the main influencing factors of the adsorption process were analyzed,the research directions and prospects were deduced.The analysis shows that raw materials with high carbon content are suitable for the preparation of activated carbon,especially carbonaceous waste.The adsorption capacity of phenol in activated carbon is affected by the specific surface area and surface functional groups,which is significant for the preparation and modification of activated carbon.It is important to control the particle size,pH,temperature,adsorption time,competitive adsorption and other factors when activated carbon is used to phenol adsorption in the specific application.
Synergetic Kinetics of Phenolic Wastewater Treatment Using UV/H2O2 Systems

Abstract:Though UV/H2O2 process has showed potential application for waster treatment, there were only a few reports on degradation kinetics. In this paper, the synergetic kinetics of phenol wastewater treatment by using UV/H2O2 system was studied. It was found that phenol degradation followed pseudo-first order reaction under individual UV radiation, H2O2 oxidation and UV/H2O2 process. The removal rate of phenol was fairly low in the single UV radiation or H2O2 oxidation process, while it significantly enhanced in the combined UV/H2O2 system. This indicated that there exist synergetic effects in the UV/H2O2 process and it was found that the promoted factor for phenol degradation rate constant is about 7.35. A simplified mechanistic model for phenol degradation was derived accounting for the contribution of individual UV radiation, H2O2 oxidation and hydroxyl radical in the combined UV/H2O2 system. The model was proved to be well suitable for the phenol degradation in the presence of superfluous H2O2. Abstract:Anaerobic digestion of phenolic wastewater by anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) has revealed increasing attractiveness, but the application of AnMBRs for treating high-strength phenolic wastewater faces challenges related to elevated phenol stress and membrane fouling. In this study, the coupling of AnMBR and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was developed for efficient treatment of high-strength phenolic wastewater. The system achieved robust removal efficiencies of phenol (99%) and quinoline (98%) at a gradual increase of phenol concentration from 1000 to 5000 mg/L and a constant quinoline concentration of 100 mg/L. The dosing of PAC could effectively control the membrane fouling rate with the transmembrane pressure (TMP) increasing rate as low as 0.17 kPa/d. The robust performances were mainly attributed to the favorable retention of functional microbes through membrane interception, while pulse cross flow buffered against phenol stress and facilitated cake layer removal. Meanwhile, the enriched core functional microbes, such as Syntrophorhabdus, Syntrophus, Mesotoga and Methanolinea, played a crucial role in further reduction of phenol stress. Notably, the significant presence of biomacromolecule degrader, such as Levilinea, contributed to membrane fouling mitigation through extracellular polymer degradation. Moreover, the enlargement of particle size distribution (PSD) by PAC was expected to mitigate membrane fouling. This study provided a promising avenue for sustainable treatment of high-strength phenolic wastewater.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid extraction,membrane based extraction and liquid membrane extraction technologies for phenol containing wastewater treatment were reviewed.Their principles,characteristics,processes,application advantages and existing problems were summarized.The development of extraction solvents with high distribution coefficient,low toxicity and solubility,and the study on the mechanism of synergistic effect of mixed solvents played a key role on improving the overall efficiency.The study of membrane material should be the focus of membrane based extraction,strengthening the manufacturing of inexpensive membrane module with high flux.The mechanism and controlling methods of membrane fouling and swelling were also taken efforts to investigate.There was no large-scale of industrialization application example on liquid membrane.How to enhance its stability needs to be further studied.

Abstract:Chlorophenol wastewater belongs to highly toxic industrial wastewater, which can cause serious harm to the environment and human health if not treated effectively. The current treatment methods for chlorophenol wastewater are divided into physical, chemical, and biological methods. The physical adsorption experiment found that the monodisperse magnetic nano-column was prepared by the solvothermal method, which could remove 91.5% of pentachlorophenol within 30 mins. More than 90% of chlorophenol can be extracted using an ionic liquid as an extractant. When the chlorophenol reaches 15 g/L, the extraction rate only slightly decreases. CaO and SiO2 can achieve 99.0% 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in 6 hours as ball milling materials by physical and chemical methods. The electrochemical reduction test found that using Pd/Py SDBS/Ti as the cathode, 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, and 3-chlorophenol could be reduced and dechlorinated, in which 100 mg/L of 2-chlorophenol could be completely degraded within 60 minutes. The biochemical index BOD5/COD of wastewater is less than 0.3 if the biological treatment technology based on co-metabolism is adopted to realize the chlorophenol treatment. In treating chlorophenol wastewater, the application scenario should be fully considered to achieve the best treatment effect of chlorophenol wastewater.

Abstract:Synergetic effects for p-nitrophenol degradation were observed in the ozonation with ultrasonic enhancement. The enhancements of removal rate for p-nitrophenol and TOC were around 116% and 294% respectively in comparison with the individual ultrasound and ozonation systems. The synergetic phenomenon is attributed to two physicochemical mechanisms: (1) Ultrasound decomposes ozone causing augmentation of the activity of free radicals; (2) Ultrasonic wave increased the concentration of O3 in solution because of ultrasonic dispersion.

Abstract:In recent years, the efficient removal of organic pollutants from wastewater has emerged as a critical area of global research interest. Against this backdrop, an array of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment has been developed. Among numerous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), periodate (PI), an emerging oxidizing agent in AOPs, has garnered significant attention from researchers. Particularly, the integration of ultrasound (US)-activated PI systems has been recognized as an exceptionally promising approach for the synergistic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. In this paper, we conducted a thorough analysis of the mechanisms underlying the degradation of organic pollutants using the US/PI system. Furthermore, we comprehensively delineated the effects of ultrasonic power, periodate concentration, temperature, pH, coexisting inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter on the removal efficiency of organic pollutants and summarized application cases of the US/PI system for the degradation of different pollutants. Finally, we also offered prospective discussions on the future trajectories of US/PI technology development.

Abstract:Ultrasound waves have been widely used in the field of organic wastewater treatment due to their mechanical, thermal, and chemical effects derived from their cavitation effect. Many researchers have combined ultrasound waves with other organic wastewater treatment methods because they have the potential to offset the disadvantages of other methods. In recent years, many authors within the literature have reviewed the application of ultrasound combined with a certain wastewater treatment method. In this review, we introduce the working mechanism of ultrasound in the treatment of organic wastewater and then examine the synergistic effects of ultrasound with other organic wastewater treatment methods based on various applications, indicating a strong synergistic effect between ultrasound and other wastewater treatment methods. Subsequently, we introduce typical ultrasound-enhanced organic wastewater treatment equipment and propose some possible developmental directions for ultrasound in the treatment of organic wastewater.

Application of UV/O3/PS Coupling Process in the Treatment of Phenol Wastewater

Abstract:In view of the low utilization rate of O 3 in the treatment of phenol containing wastewater by the advanced oxidation technology at current, UV/O 3 /PS coupling system is proposed to improve the content of strong oxidizing substances in the reaction system and strengthen the degradation and mineralization of phenol substances in the wastewater; On the basis of exploring the phenol degradation rate, TOC removal rate, reaction influencing factors and active substances of various coupling systems, the potential and advantages of this system in degrading phenolic wastewater were further studied. The results showed that the UV/O 3 /PS system could completely degrade phenol within 15 minutes. Compared with the single UV/O 3 method or UV/PS method, the mineralization rate of phenols in water increased by 47.36% and 39.93%, respectively. Through analysis of various influencing factors, the appropriate dosages of O 3 and PS in the UV/O 3 /PS system were determined. It was found that the UV/O 3 /PS system had a wide range of adaptability to pH and HCO 3 - , which implied that this system had an extensive application value in the treatment of refractory wastewater. In addition,ESR analysis showed that the coupling system produced more ·OH and ·SO 4 - under the catalysis of UV than the single system, which had a promoting effect. Thus, the UV/O 3 /PS coupling process had a better performance on phenols degradation in a wide range of applications. The research results can provide a theoretical reference for the degradation of phenolic wastewater by UV/O 3 /PS coupling process.

Abstract:Organic pollutants in water are a serious problem because of their widespread presence, harming the ecosystem and human health. Of the commonly used advanced oxidation processes, a hybrid of ultrasound and the Fenton/Fenton-like technology has received increasing attention in treatment of aqueous organic pollutants. This hybrid is effective in degradation of organic pollutants, but its application has not been summarised. Herein, first, the application and influencing factors of this hybrid technology for organic pollutants degradation are introduced. Second, the mechanism of its action is discussed. Third, the current challenges and future perspectives associated with this technology are proposed. This review provides valuable information regarding this technology, deepens the understanding of its mechanisms of organic pollutants degradation and provides a reference for its use in treatment of aquatic environments.

Abstract:The degradation mechanism and processes of p-chlorophenol using high frequency ultrasound were investigated in detail.The degradation effect and its affecting factor such as the initial concentration,advanced oxidation processes and so on were studied.The results show that the degradation of p-chlorophenol is a first-order reaction and the degradation mechanism is mainly based on ultrasonic cavitation,and there will be good prospects for industrial utilization of ultrasound combined with other advanced oxidation processes,which can remarkably increase the degradation efficiency.

Abstract:The industrial wastewater containing phenol is characterized by its elevated toxicity, resistance to biodegradation, and pronounced bioaccumulation. Traditional treatment methods frequently fall short in effectively removing phenol. In this study, a UV photoelectrochemical synergistic catalytic oxidation process was employed for the efficient elimination of phenol. The investigation systematically assessed the impact of various factors, including electrolyte type, concentration, current density, and initial pH, on phenol degradation. Furthermore, the degradation products were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the oxidation and degradation of phenol in the UV photoelectrochemical synergistic catalytic system adhere to a first-order kinetic equation. Moreover, the combined UV and electrochemical catalytic degradation process demonstrated a synergistic effect, significantly enhancing the efficiency of phenol degradation. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of UV combined electrochemical catalytic degradation of phenol and provide reasonable speculation on the degradation pathway of phenol under UV electrochemical co-catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:In this paper, the author made use of CHA-111 polymeric adsorbent to treat wastewater containing high concentration phenol from T-50 alkyl phenyl sulfonate synthesis. The average removal rate of phenol and CODcr was 99.9% and 95%, respectively. The discharged water, where the concentration of phenol was less than 5mg/L, was treated by oxidation with sodium hypochlorite; the treated wastewater reached the standard of drain water. The whole process realized the accumulation, recovery and resource reuse of phenol in the wastewater.

Abstract:Industrial expansion and increased water consumption have created water scarcity concerns. Meanwhile, conventional wastewater purification methods have failed to degrade recalcitrant pollutants efficiently. The present review paper discusses the recent advances and challenges in photocatalytic processes applied for industrial effluents treatment, with respect to phenolic compounds degradation. Key operational parameters including the catalyst loading, light intensity, initial pollutants concentration, pH, and type and concentrations of oxidants are evaluated and discussed. Compared to the other examined controlling parameters, pH has the highest effect on the photo-oxidation of contaminants by means of the photocatalyst ionization degree and surface charge. Furthermore, major phenolic compounds derived from industrial sources are comprehensively presented and the applicability of photocatalytic processes and the barriers in practical applications, including high energy demand, technical challenges, photocatalyst stability, and recyclability have been explored. The importance of energy consumption and operational costs for realistic large-scale processes are also discussed. Finally, research gaps in this area and the suggested direction for improving degradation efficiencies in industrial applications are presented. In the light of these premises, selective degradation processes in real water matrices such as untreated sewage are proposed.

Abstract:The existence of pollutants, such as toxic organic dye chemicals, in water and wastewater raises concerns as they are inadequately eliminated through conventional water and wastewater treatment methods, including physicochemical and biological processes. Ultrasonic treatment has emerged as an advanced treatment process that has been widely applied to the decomposition of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Ultrasonic treatment has several advantages, including easy operation, sustainability, non-secondary pollutant production, and saving energy. This review examines the elimination of dye chemicals and categorizes them into cationic and anionic dyes based on the existing literature. The objectives include (i) analyzing the primary factors (water quality and ultrasonic conditions) that influence the sonodegradation of dye chemicals and their byproducts during ultrasonication, (ii) assessing the impact of the different sonocatalysts and combined systems (with ozone and ultraviolet) on sonodegradation, and (iii) exploring the characteristics-based removal mechanisms of dyes. In addition, this review proposes areas for future research on ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in water and wastewater.

Abstract:The degradation process and mechanism of p-chlorophenol in water using high frequency ultrasound (1.7 mHz) was investigated in this paper. The p-chlorophenol was degraded successfully in the high frequency ultrasonic device with low consumption of energy. The degradation effect was improved by increasing the solution concentration. No products or intermediate products were detected in the reaction mixture by the analytic methods of MS and 1H-NMR after ultrasonic irradiation. The dominant degradation mechanism is high temperature pyrolysis in ultrasonic cavities rather than free radical oxidation, and the experimental results can be explained completely according to pyrolysis mechanism.

Abstract:An apparatus for the ozonation and biological decomposition of phenol-containing wastewater was established. Through the pre-treatment of phenol-containing wastewater by ozonation, most phenol will be degraded to oxalic acid, maleic acid and other small organic acids, which will be easy to treat using biochemistry methods as the B/C ratio increased. The ozonation-biological process was better for CODcr removal than the reverse process, (bio-ozonation) implying the effectiveness of the biological degradation of phenol wastewater after the ozonation; > 95% phenol and 76.9% CODcr were removed respectively and 98 and 47% respectively for bio-ozonation system.
