Abstract:With the development of modern society and economy gradually entering the global diversification phase, there are more and more channels of film and television culture transmission. As an important carrier of information dissemination in different regions of countries and even between nationalities, the screen culture plays an extremely important role in the communication of film and television culture. Due to the language and cultural background between different countries and ethnic groups, there are great cultural differences. Therefore, subtitle translation has become an important way of expressing information conversion between different languages and cultures. In the actual context, it is possible to convert the information dynamically. Therefore, from the perspective of contextual adaptation, colleges have been constantly innovating the forms and methods of English movie subtitle translation to better realize the communication and sharing between different film and television cultures.

English Film Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Domestication and Foreignization—A Case Study of Ice Age

Abstract:Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which boosts the development of film industry and highlights the importance of subtitle translation.However,in China,subtitling is a relatively new research field of translation.This study explores the guiding role of domestication and foreignization strategies in English film subtitle translation.On the basis of material from Ice Age,the paper carries on the analysis of film subtitle translation in terms of expressions with typical cultural features and idioms&proverbs under the effective guidance of domestication and foreignization translation strategies.It’s concluded that domestication and foreignization strategies can provide theoretical guidance for subtitling and appropriate combination of the two strategies can achieve better translation effects.

Abstract:This semiotically-oriented study examined the Chinese subtitle translations for humor in English sitcoms and highlighted the interactions between the verbal and the visual modes. Drawing on the General Theory of Verbal Humor and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study examined three script opposition types: normal vs. abnormal, actual vs. nonactual, and possible vs. impossible; furthermore, it analyzed three logical mechanism categories: false specification or exemplification; exaggeration or false analogy; and false reasoning on time, space, cause, or condition. It focused on the Chinese subtitles for English verbally-visually expressed humor in the English sitcom Modern Family (Season 5) and found that literal translation and explicitation are the two predominantly employed translation procedures to render script opposition and logical mechanism. This study further demonstrates that the two key concerns for subtitling English verbally-visually expressed humor are highlighting the incongruities embodied in script opposition and triggering the semiotic resolutions represented in logical mechanisms. These findings elucidate the relevance of visual elements for subtitling humor both among subtitle translators and researchers.

Abstract:Guided by Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, this paper probes the strategies and methods used in subtitle translation of film and television productions containing Chinese elements. Taking the translation of lines from Ne Zha: I Am the Destiny, it analyzes the language expressions of Chinese tradition and categorizes the methods of dealing with cultural elements in the translation process. The aim is to elevate the translation quality of film subtitles from a cultural perspective, facilitating better communication between the original-language films and target-language audiences, and promoting cross-cultural exchanges.

Abstract:Abstract There has been substantial scholarly interest in extralinguistic cultural references (ECRs) in translation, especially in audiovisual translation (AVT). However, most scholars have investigated subtitling from English into other languages. Although China has a long tradition of film production, few studies have investigated the subtitling of ECRs from Chinese into English. This article attempts to remedy this by investigating the translation strategies, translation strategy distribution, and fidelity indexes of six subtitled versions of Chinese-language films. We compare our results with Gottlieb’s (2009) results on Danish subtitles, and find that both Chinese and Danish subtitlers hold a target-oriented attitude. We then investigate the share of the strategies in the subtitling of ECRs across different Chinese films and determine that this varies by genre and that the difference in the fidelity index among films of different genres is substantial. The translation of epic films appears to be highly faithful, whereas that of crime and gangster films is much less faithful.

Abstract:Film is always a concentrated embodiment of culture and languages. Nowadays, attention has also been paid to film subtitle and its translation. As China further promotes the spread of culture, traditional Chinese symbols such as "Kung fu" and "martial arts" are also becoming familiar to foreign countries. This work has selected the film Kung Fu Panda 3 as as the research object, which is a story based on a Chinese cultural background while presents in an English context. Through a comparative analysis of Chinese and English subtitles of the film, the film subtitle translation strategies and skills are explored from three translation techniques among Peter Newmark's translation theories.

Abstract:Abstract In China, subtitling is replacing dubbing as the preferred mode of audiovisual translation. Fans of particular shows form groups to circulate their video resources and translations online. Although remaining controversial, ‘fansubs’ shed light on and raise questions in both theoretical and practical aspects of subtitling. Herein I define what the product of subtitling should be and investigate strategies of translation in use. The analysis focuses specifically on translators’ strategies in complying with the constraints of a multimodal medium in order to explain, transform, or neutralize the subtitle for transcultural purposes. This goal is achieved by comparing different versions of Chinese subtitles for the same episodes selected from two American TV sitcoms - The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men.

Abstract:In recent years, the translation of film subtitles has received more and more attention as a cross ‐ cultural communication activity. Film is a very important part of the cultural industry, and the improvement of the international spread of Chinese films is hard without excellent translated texts. Taking the subtitle translation of the movie “Ba Bai”as the research object, this article combines the theory of communication and translation studies, and discusses the strategy of film subtitle translation. Research has proved that not only should the translation of film subtitles be studied from the perspective of linguistics, but also the nature of its cross ‐ cultural communication should be emphasized. Translators need to fully consider the differences between Chinese and Western languages, cultures, social backgrounds and audience’s audiovisual needs, and use translation strategies rationally to promote the “going global”of Chinese films.

Abstract:Under the background of economic globalization, British and American movies and TV series have become one of the important ways of cultural exchange and communication between China and the west, and subtitle translation also plays an increasingly important role in cross-cultural communication. Taking the American sitcom "the Big Bang Theory" as an example, its language is characterized by humor and personality. This paper first summarizes the characteristics of subtitle translation of sitcoms, then analyzes the types of humor translation from three aspects: general humor, cultural humor and linguistic humor, and then analyzes the specific examples of "addition, subtraction, compilation and modification" to investigate the guiding role of translation variation theory in subtitle translation.

Abstract:As a carrier and medium of culture, film and television have richer cultural connotations and a mission of cross-cultural communication. The translation and dissemination of film and television works not only play an important role in enhancing understanding and communication between different countries, but also contribute to the social life and values of ordinary people. Influence is growing. In order to improve the media communication function of film and television works, this paper attempts to explain and discuss how subtitle translation uses these two translation strategies through the analysis of Chinese and foreign film and television dramas. Through the analysis of the specific translation process of film and television works, the author draws the conclusion that in order to achieve the specific translation purpose, the subtitle translation should be based on the author's intention, translation purpose, text type, and reader factors. This paper adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods and selects suitable examples to explain or illustrate the phenomenon of film and television translation in the description and analysis process. The system designed in the paper is designed with the dissemination and evaluation of film and television works as parameters. The example in this study is that the author himself recorded it according to the Chinese and English subtitles on the screen when watching. Without personal modification, the selected films are officially official institutions, published or broadcast translations. This research focuses on the dialectical analysis and thinking of the collected corpus, so that the conclusions are more convincing than just giving some perceptual examples.

Abstract:Continued economic globalization, international cultural integration and rapid technological development have led to a boom in the multimedia industry. Film and TV drama is one of the primary approaches for foreign cultural communication, and subtitle translation is a crucial part of ensuring the effectiveness of cultural communication. Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child, a national comic masterpiece, has successfully won the 2019 box office championship and ranked second in China’s box office history,becoming the “light of national comics” and successfully going out of China to the world.Based on the rich cultural information contained in this film with Chinese characteristics, this essay takes Peter Newmark’s communicative translation as the theoretical framework, and some subtitles of the film Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child as the corpus. It summarizes the three principles of accuracy, conciseness, and instantaneous readability embodied in the subtitles from the perspective of communicative translation. According to this, this thesis draws some experience and finds suitable strategies for film subtitle translation, providing assistance to subtitle translators, with a view to enriching translation research in this field.

Abstract:Film and television works play a significant role in cultural exchanges between countries. In recent years, more and more outstanding Chinese films and TV works have been transmitted to foreign countries and have been well received by foreign audiences, and the comedy film Five Hundred Miles, released during the Chinese Spring Festival in 2023, is a fantasy comedy film that has achieved widespread acclaim from audiences at home and abroad. In the process of transferring domestic films to foreign countries, subtitle translation attaches great importance. The quality of subtitle translation directly affects the understanding of the content for foreign audiences and the influence of Chinese culture in the international arena. This study analyses the Chinese-English translation of the subtitles of Five Hundred Miles under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos theory, so as to provide value for translators in the future translation of film subtitles.

A Study of the English Translation of Culture-loaded Words in Chinese Film Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract:: Culture-loaded words used in film dialogues often cause problems for translators and this is quite true in culture-based Chinese films including animation stories. What difficulties are translators confronted with and how to solve them? This thesis attempts to find answers to these research questions through a case study C-E subtitle translation of culture-loaded words in the film Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child from the perspective of Skopos Theory. This thesis concludes that different translation strategies may be adopted in pursuit of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance when dealing with different types of cultural terms in dialogues. However, it is highly suggested that some basic principles for film translation should not be neglected for good acceptance by target audience in terms of high quality control. These are mainly expressed in the aspects of colloquialization, personalization, entertainmentization, rhythmization.
