Abstract: By using the Lewis-Riesenfeld theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, the exact solutions of the {\it time-dependent} Schr\"{o}dinger equations which govern the various Lie-algebraic quantum systems in atomic physics, quantum optics, nuclear physics and laser physics are obtained. It is shown that the {\it explicit} solutions may also be obtained by working in a sub-Hilbert-space corresponding to a particular eigenvalue of the conserved generator ({\it i. e.}, the {\it time-independent} invariant) for some quantum systems without quasi-algebraic structures. The global and topological properties of geometric phases and their adiabatic limit in time-dependent quantum systems/models are briefly discussed.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized invariant formulation, the invariant-related unitary transformation method is used to study the evolution of the quantum Dirac field in a time-dependent spatially homogeneous electric field. We solve the functional Schr?dinger equation for the Dirac field and obtain the exact solutions and corresponding total phase. The total phase includes both the dynamical phase and geometric phase (Aharonov-Anandan phase).

Abstract:A derivation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation from the time-independent one is considered. Instead of time, the coordinate of an additional degree of freedom, the clock, is introduced into the original time-independent Schrödinger equation. It is shown that the standard time-dependent Schrödinger equation can be obtained for the semiclassical clock only. For elucidation of the physical meaning of the equation obtained in this way, various types of clocks are discussed. In addition, the corresponding equation for the density matrix and formulas for the mean values of operators are derived.

Abstract:The present paper developed two kinds of new time-dependent methods in quantum scattering calculation. One method is to combine a split-operator method with a differential method to achieve better convergent property than a pure differential method and better adaptive property in a multidimensional case than the pure split-operator method. Another method is to adopt a desired time-dependent variational principle to achieve variational correction in numerical calculations, which can improve the result from direct numerical evaluation with little additional consumed time.

Abstract:We prove in this paper that the solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation can be expressed as the solution of a global space-time quadratic minimization problem that is amenable to Galerkin time-space discretization schemes, using an appropriate least-square formulation. The present analysis can be applied to the electronic many-body time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation with an arbitrary number of electrons and interaction potentials with Coulomb singularities. We motivate the interest of the present approach with two goals: first, the design of Galerkin space-time discretization methods; second, the definition of dynamical low-rank approximations following a variational principle different from the classical Dirac-Frenkel principle, and for which it is possible to prove the global-in-time existence of solutions.

Abstract:Real-time propagation methods for chemistry and physics are invariably formulated using variational techniques. The time-dependent bivariational principle (TD-BIVP) is known to be the proper framework for coupled-cluster type methods, and is here studied from a differential geometric point of view. It is demonstrated how two distinct classical Hamilton's equations of motion arise from considering the real and imaginary parts of the action integral. The latter is new, and can in principle be used to develop novel propagation methods. Conservation laws and Poisson brackets are introduced, completing the analogy with classical mechanics. An overview of established real-time propagation methods is given in the context of our formulation of the TD-BIVP, namely time-dependent traditional coupled-cluster theory, orbital-adaptive coupled-cluster theory, time-dependent orthogonal optimized coupled-cluster theory, and equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory.

An Accurate Pentadiagonal Matrix Solution for the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation

Abstract:One of the unitary forms of the quantum mechanical time evolution operator is given by Cayley's approximation. A numerical implementation of the same involves the replacement of second derivatives in Hamiltonian with the three-point formula, which leads to a tridiagonal system of linear equations. In this work, we invoke the highly accurate five-point stencil to discretize the wave function onto an Implicit-Explicit pentadiagonal Crank-Nicolson scheme. It is demonstrated that the resultant solutions are significantly more accurate than the standard ones. We also discuss the resolution of bipartite wavepacket dynamics and derive conditions under which a product state from the laboratory perspective remains a product state from the center-of-mass point of view. This has profound applications for decoupling complicated bipartite dynamics into two independent single-particle problems.

Abstract:Time-integral variational principles offer a theoretical perspective and practical advantages. They provide a concept for understanding the behavior of dynamical systems and a means to develop governing equations of motion. In analytical mechanics, Hamilton's principle is the most prominent variational principle and it is commonly connected to the classic Lagrange equations. This study extends those ideas by constructing time-integral variational principles from Nielsen's form of Lagrange's equations. The paper begins with a new development of Nielsen's form, after which a set of new variational principles are developed and explained, followed by two example applications.

Abstract:Describing the real-time evolution of many-electron quantum systems is crucial for understanding the dynamical properties of condensed matter, molecular systems in quantum chemistry, and the behaviors of complex materials. However, the real-time evolution of non-equilibrium quantum electronic systems poses a significant challenge for theoretical and computational approaches. This work introduces a variational approach for fermionic time-dependent wave functions, surpassing mean-field approximations by capturing many-body correlations. Our methodology introduces a parameterization of the time-evolving quantum state, enabling an accurate approximation of its evolution. To account for electron correlations, we employ time-dependent Jastrow factors and backflow transformations, which can be further enhanced by incorporating neural networks for function parameterization. We utilize the time-dependent variational Monte Carlo technique to efficiently compute optimal time-dependent parameters. Additionally, we introduce a new time-evolution method based on Trotter-root expansions of the propagator, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of our simulations. The approach is demonstrated in three distinct systems: the solvable harmonic interaction model, the dynamics of a diatomic molecule in intense laser fields, and a quenched quantum dot. In all cases, we show clear signatures of many-body correlations in the dynamics that are not captured by mean-field methods. The results showcase the ability of our variational approach to accurately capture the time evolution of quantum states, providing insight into the quantum dynamics of interacting electronic systems, beyond the capabilities of mean-field.

Abstract:In recent years, the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) method based on the matrix product state (MPS) wave function formulation has shown its great power in performing large-scale quantum dynamics simulations for realistic chemical systems with strong electron-vibration interactions. In this work, we propose a new stochastic adaptive single-site TDVP (SA-1TDVP) scheme to evolve the bond-dimension adaptively, which can integrate the tra-ditional advantages of both the high efficiency of single-site TDVP (1TDVP) variant and the high accuracy of the two-site TDVP (2TDVP) variant. Based on the assumption that the level statistics of entanglement Hamiltonians, which originate from the reduced density matrices of the MPS method, follows a Poisson or Wigner distribution, as generically predicted by random matrix theory, addi-tional random singular values are generated to expand the bond-dimension automatically. Tests on simulating the vibrationally-resolved quantum dynamics and absorption spectra in the pyrazine molecule and perylene bisimide (PBI) J-aggregate trimer as well as a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain show that it can be automatic and as accurate as 2TDVP but reduce the computational time remarkably.

Clifford Dressed Time-Dependent Variational Principle

Abstract:We propose an enhanced Time-Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) algorithm for Matrix Product States (MPS) that integrates Clifford disentangling techniques to efficiently manage entanglement growth. By leveraging the Clifford group, which maps Pauli strings to other Pauli strings while maintaining low computational complexity, we introduce a Clifford dressed single-site 1-TDVP scheme. During the TDVP integration, we apply a global Clifford transformation as needed to reduce entanglement by iteratively sweeping over two-qubit Clifford unitaries that connect neighboring sites in a checkerboard pattern. We validate the new algorithm numerically using various quantum many-body models, including both integrable and non-integrable systems. Our results demonstrate that the Clifford dressed TDVP significantly improves entanglement management and computational efficiency, achieving higher accuracy, extended simulation times, and enhanced precision in computed observables compared to standard TDVP approaches. Additionally, we propose incorporating Clifford gates directly within the two-site 2-TDVP scheme.

Clifford Circuits Augmented Time-Dependent Variational Principle

Abstract:The recently proposed Clifford Circuits Augmented Matrix Product States (CA-MPS) (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.09217" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.09217">arXiv:2405.09217</a>) seamlessly augments Density Matrix Renormalization Group with Clifford circuits. In CA-MPS, the entanglement from stabilizers is transferred to the Clifford circuits which can be easily handled according to the Gottesman-Knill theorem. As a result, MPS needs only to deal with the non-stabilizer entanglement, which largely reduce the bond dimension and the resource required for the accurate simulation of many-body systems. In this work, we generalize CA-MPS to the framework of Time-Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) for time evolution simulations. In this method, we apply Clifford circuits to the resulting MPS in each TDVP step with a two-site sweeping process similar as in DMRG, aiming at reducing the entanglement entropy in the MPS, and the Hamiltonian is transformed accordingly using the chosen Clifford circuits. Similar as in CA-MPS, the Clifford circuits doesn't increase the number of terms in the Hamiltonian which makes the overhead very small in the new method. We test this method in both XXZ chain and two dimensional Heisenberg model. The results show that the Clifford circuits augmented TDVP method can reduce the entanglement entropy in the time evolution process and hence makes the simulation reliable for longer time. The Clifford circuits augmented Time-Dependent Variational Principle provides a useful tool for the simulation of time evolution process of many-body systems in the future.

Abstract:A principle is proposed according to which the dynamics of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional configuration space (OCS) is determined by a variational problem for two functionals: one is based on the mean value of the Hamilton operator, while the second one is based on the mean value of the total energy of the particle, which is determined through the phase of the wave function with help of the generalized Planck-Einstein relation. The first functional contains information about the corpuscular properties of a quantum particle, and the second one comprises its wave properties. The true dynamics is described by a wave function for which the variations of these two functionals are equal. This variational principle, which can also be viewed as a mathematical formulation of wave-particle duality, leads to the Schrödinger equation.

Invariants for time-dependent Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:An exact invariant is derived for $n$-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems with general time-dependent potentials. The invariant is worked out in two equivalent ways. In the first approach, we define a special {\it Ansatz\/} for the invariant and determine its time-dependent coefficients. In the second approach, we perform a two-step canonical transformation of the initially time-dependent Hamiltonian to a time-independent one. The invariant is found to contain a function of time $f_{2}(t)$, defined as a solution of a linear third-order differential equation whose coefficients depend in general on the explicitly known configuration space trajectory that follows from the system's time evolution. It is shown that the invariant can be interpreted as the time integral of an energy balance equation. Our result is applied to a one-dimensional, time-dependent, damped non-linear oscillator, and to a three-dimensional system of Coulomb-interacting particles that are confined in a time-dependent quadratic external potential. We finally show that our results can be used to assess the accuracy of numerical simulations of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems.

Direct methods for pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger operators

Abstract:In this paper, we establish various maximal principles and develop the direct moving planes and sliding methods for equations involving the physically interesting (nonlocal) pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger operators $(-\Delta+m^{2})^{s}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ and mass $m>0$. As a consequence, we also derive multiple applications of these direct methods. For instance, we prove monotonicity, symmetry and uniqueness results for solutions to various equations involving the operators $(-\Delta+m^{2})^{s}$ in bounded domains, epigraph or $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, including pseudo-relativistic Schrödinger equations, 3D boson star equations and the equations with De Giorgi type nonlinearities.

Abstract:In conventional quantum mechanics (QM), time is treated as a parameter, $t$, and the evolution of the quantum state with respect to time is described by ${\hat {H}}|\psi(t)\rangle=i\hbar \frac{d}{dt}|\psi(t)\rangle$. In a recently proposed space-time-symmetric (STS) extension of QM, position becomes the parameter and a new quantum state, $|\phi(x)\rangle$, is introduced. This state describes the particle's arrival time at position $x$, and the way the arrival time changes with respect to $x$ is governed by ${\hat {P}}|\phi(x)\rangle=-i\hbar \frac{d}{dx} |\phi(x)\rangle$. In this work, we generalize the STS extension to a particle moving in three-dimensional space. By combining the conventional QM with the three-dimensional STS extension, we have a ``full'' STS QM given by the dynamic equation ${\hat { P}}^{\mu}|{\phi }^\mu(x^{\mu})\rangle=- i \hbar~\eta^{\mu\nu}\frac{d}{dx^{\nu}}|{\phi}^\mu (x^{\mu})\rangle$, where $x^{\mu}$ is the coordinate chosen as the parameter of the state. Depending on the choice of $x^\mu$, we can recover either the Schrödinger equation (with $x^\mu=x^0=t$) or the three-dimensional STS extension (with $x^\mu=x^i=$ either $x$, $y$, or $z$). By selecting $x^\mu=x$, we solve the dynamic equation of the STS QM for a free particle and calculate the wave function $\langle t,y,z|\phi^1(x)\rangle$. This wave function represents the probability amplitude of the particle arriving at position ($y$,$z$) at instant $t$, given that the detector occupies the entire $yz$-plane located at position $x$. Remarkably, we find that the integral of $|\langle t,y,z|\phi (x)\rangle|^2$ in $y$ and $z$ takes the form of the three-dimensional version of the axiomatic Kijowski distribution.

Abstract:In the diagonal subspace of the Liapounov representation introduced by the Brussels group, the dominant terms for any matrix element of the time evolution operator are given explicitly if the Hamiltonian satisfies some general conditions held in all models studied so far. All these expressions have semi-definite positive forms so that, when they are different from zero for a particular isolated system, the "microscopic entropy" will increase monotonically until the system approaches the well-known microcanonical equilibrium.

Abstract:This paper designs a hybrid scheme based on finite difference methods and a spectral method for the time-dependent Wigner equation, and gives the error analysis for the full discretization of its initial value problem. An explicit-implicit time-splitting scheme is used for time integration and the second-order upwind finite difference scheme is used to discretize the advection term. The consistence error and the stability of the full discretization are analyzed. A Fourier spectral method is used to approximate the pseudo-differential operator term and the corresponding error is studied in detail. The final convergence result shows clearly how the regularity of the solution affects the convergence order of the proposed scheme. Numerical results are presented for confirming the sharpness of the analysis. The scattering effects of a Gaussian wave packet tunneling through a Gaussian potential barrier are investigated. The evolution of the density function shows that a larger portion of the wave is reflected when the height and the width of the barrier increase. Mathematics subject classification: 65M06, 65M70.
