Abstract:This paper, taking system-functional linguistics as the theoretical guidance, aims to analyze the grammatical and semantic function of the preposition “with” and its relevant structures in Chinese-English translation based on a small corpus established from the authentic materials of the official version of the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters in the past ten years. The conclusion is that the grammatical and semantic functions of “with” structure in translation examination are: to simplify sentence patterns, to supplement the previous and subsequent information, to reestablish the characteristics of the English language.

Abstract:Studies on prepositions in Hong Kong English have focused on syntactic issues, most notably on the constituent structures of different prepositions with five transitive verbs (i.e., enter into, discuss about, return back, stress on and list out). As a result, they have neglected the role of meaning in the choice of prepositions that are associated with these verbs. This paper attempts to provide a convincing semantic explanation of the phenomenon from the theoretical framework of Cognitive Grammar. I will argue that the cooccurrence of particular prepositions with these verbs in Hong Kong English is not completely arbitrary, but is in fact semantically motivated to a considerable degree. All corpus uses of these structures evoke some kind of conceptual overlap between the lexical verb and the preposition. More specifically, a certain facet of the verb's conceptual content corresponds in some evident way to an active zone of the associated preposition. The conclusion considers the implications of a highly schematic constructional schema instantiated by these five verbpreposition constructions as a unit entrenched by nonnative speakers.

Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:This paper presents the concept of semantic pattern,and constructs semantic pattern base of English preposition phrases and sentences,major parameter base and knowledge base of English set phrases.Based on the characteristics of the semantic patterns of English prepositions,a new semantic analysis and Chinese translation algorithm based on semantic pattern decomposition is presented,which combines with sentence semantic pattern base and set phrases knowledge base to resolve the problem.Test results show that this method has a good effect on resolving Chinese translation of English prepositions.

Abstract:We consider the semantics of prepositions, revisiting a broad-coverage annotation scheme used for annotating all 4,250 preposition tokens in a 55,000 word corpus of English. Attempts to apply the scheme to adpositions and case markers in other languages, as well as some problematic cases in English, have led us to reconsider the assumption that a preposition's lexical contribution is equivalent to the role/relation that it mediates. Our proposal is to embrace the potential for construal in adposition use, expressing such phenomena directly at the token level to manage complexity and avoid sense proliferation. We suggest a framework to represent both the scene role and the adposition's lexical function so they can be annotated at scale---supporting automatic, statistical processing of domain-general language---and sketch how this representation would inform a constructional analysis.

Abstract:Machine translation of prepositions is a difficult task; little work has been done, to date, in this area. This article suggests addressing the problem using a semantic framework for the interpretation of the surrounding elements of a preposition in the source language. This framework, called Use Types, will reduce the set of possible prepositions in the target language, therefore helping the translation process. This approach is not language dependent, but we focus, here, on English and Chinese, and we also specifically look at three prepositions: in, on and at. The article describes machine learning experiments designed and conducted in which WordNet is employed to lead to an automatic discovery of the Use Types. Results are analyzed and discussed and a practical use of the system is suggested along with the preliminary results it obtains.

Abstract:Universal Conceptual Cognitive Annotation (UCCA; Abend and Rappoport, 2013) is a typologically-informed, broad-coverage semantic annotation scheme that describes coarse-grained predicate-argument structure but currently lacks semantic roles. We argue that lexicon-free annotation of the semantic roles marked by prepositions, as formulated by Schneider et al. (2018b), is complementary and suitable for integration within UCCA. We show empirically for English that the schemes, though annotated independently, are compatible and can be combined in a single semantic graph. A comparison of several approaches to parsing the integrated representation lays the groundwork for future research on this task.

Abstract:This paper aims to analyze the application strategies of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cognitive Linguistics emerged as a prominent theoretical framework, providing new theoretical support for English teaching. This paper first introduces the basic concepts and principles of Cognitive Linguistics. Then, it discusses how Cognitive Linguistics can be applied to promote vocabulary acquisition, including the use of prototype, conceptual metaphor and image schema. Based on the literature review and analysis, this paper further examines the significance of context and collocation in vocabulary learning. Finally, it summarizes the advantages and challenges of the application of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. This paper highlights the significant role of Cognitive Linguistics in vocabulary teaching and provides new insights and methods for future English teaching.
A Syntactic Analysis of Chinese Locative Preposition Phrases from a Cross-Linguistic Perspective

Abstract:Within the framework of labeling theory of generative grammar and Distributed Morphology, this article provides a syntactic analysis of Chinese locative preposition phrases, and argues that both monosyllabic and disyllabic locative words are lexical words which share the same root. Monosyllabic and disyllabic locative preposition phrases share the same syntactic structure. In the derivation, the root of the locative word merges with the category-assigning morpheme n providing the label n, and n merges with the DP indicating the ground providing the label nP, and then the nP merges with the preposition p providing the label pP. Monosyllabic locative forms are divided into locative suffixes and locative nouns. Monosyllabic locative nouns cannot occur independently in some environments due to a phonological rule for SOME (not all) Modern Chinese words, such as wa ‘sock’, shi ‘stone’, bei ‘quilt’, etc. In the same vein, double preposition adjacency phrases in English, e.g., from above the dam are analyzed. This article also presents syntactic structures of locative preposition phrases in English and Japanese. All the structures proposed in this article do not contain ad hoc conditions and unnecessary movements and have strong explanatory power.

Abstract:The aim of this study is the creation and implementation of a groundbreaking syntactic structure typology, anchored in fundamental cognitive processes. This involves an in-depth classification and analysis of a variety of sentence types, integrating imagistic and spatial categories. This methodology promotes an in-depth comparative analysis, facilitating the discovery of distinctive syntactic features among the languages examined. The research is dedicated to a thorough exploration of sentence structure's topological aspects, scrutinizing the configuration and interplay of linguistic elements. It places particular emphasis on sentences within three diverse linguistic frameworks: Russian, Chinese, and English, thus enabling a comprehensive analysis and the identification of both cross-linguistic similarities and distinctions. This research adopts a multifaceted approach, combining theoretical analysis with comparative study. Such integration of methodologies allows for a nuanced comparison of sentence structures and their semantic roles in Russian, Chinese, and English, highlighting linguistic and cultural differences between these languages. The novelty of this study lies in the cognitive approach to sentence structure analysis and the development of a classification based on three cognitive models: (i) a single main container, (ii) dual main containers without a defined trajectory, and (iii) multiple main containers with distinct trajectories. A key principle of this classification is the integration of topological and imagery elements, underscoring the diversity of syntactic structures against a backdrop of a unified cognitive base, shaped by cultural and linguistic specifics. The findings reveal that sentences in Russian, English, and Chinese exhibit both shared and unique syntactic characteristics, reflecting cultural-cognitive differences, including the Chinese cultural concept of harmonizing opposites, the Russian cultural notion of segmenting the whole into parts, and the English cultural stance situated between these extremes.

Abstract:This study has reasoned out the semantic motivation of English and Chinese ditransitive constructions by a comparative study on multi-semantics in polysemous links of the construction.The authors point out the semantic confinement of the agent and the first object in the system of ditransitive construction by constructing construction grammar,analyzing cognitive semantics and doing construal to core and extended semantics.The authors not only do construal to the voluntariness of ditransitive constructions,but also importantly find their non-voluntariness,which makes some abnormal sentences in the ditransitive construction fit their construal and formulate their Idealized Cognitive Models(ICM).

Abstract:In this paper we propose a computational conceptualization of cognitive linguistics and construct a semantic computational platform for natural language understanding.Its technological approach mainly consists of three steps.Firstly,we form the conception unit of knowledge for logic inference and semantic computation by means of following procedures:(1)using situation networks to build the cognitive model for the meaning of the related linguistic expressions with respect to a special domain,(2)using logic formulas to describe the semantic relation among the key situation elements,and(3)using semantic axioms to represent the inference relation among the related semantic logic formulas.Secondly,we construct a lexical-syntactic knowledge base which describes the lexical,semantic,morphological and syntactic knowledge of the related lexicons with respect to the corresponding situations comprehensively.Thirdly,we build a lexical-semantic computational infrastructure by setting the bi-directional linkages among the situation networks,the lexical-syntactic knowledge base and the real text situation instances.To demonstrate the feasibility of the above computational paradigm and technological approach,we employ two cases of the development of a semantic situation network for possession-transferring domain and an expert system for Chinese kinship automatic inference.

Abstract:Abstract In the writing of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, preposition related errors account for nearly 30 percent in the all grammatical errors (Bitchener et al. 2005) [1] . Unlike verbs and nouns, isolated preposition does not mean anything, but in different contexts, prepositions usually have different meanings so that ESL students hardly master how to use all prepositions correctly. In this publication, we present a preposition error correction (PEC) model based BERT (Devlin et al., 2018) [2] which contains rich contextual semantic information, fine-tuned BERT models to intensify sentence semantic in output, and calculate the preposition matching scores according to the formula.

Abstract:This phraseological study argues that the causative construction [make Object to Verb] ([make O to V]) derived from [make O V] is acceptable when a semantic approach is adopted, and clarifies that: (i) the essence of communication is to convey meaning, which is reflected in syntactic patterns and (ii) semantics takes priority over syntactic patterns. The semantic and syntactic features of [make O to V] were semantically examined and the extended constructions in other causative constructions, such as [get O to V], [have O V], and [let O V], were assessed. Because these are generally low-frequency, age-old contemporary English constructions, the derived constructions with causative usages, such as [make O to V], [get O V], [have O to V], and [let O to V], were found to be hindered by prescriptive grammar. As this study was focused on meaning, examining usages considered incorrect can reveal new unobserved language aspects.

Abstract:The origin of Verb+ Particle can be traced back to the Old English period. During the development of Old English to Middle English, the Particle slowly replaced the role of verbal prefixes, and by the late Middle English, it completely replaced verbal prefixes and became a category used quite frequently in everyday English communication. The Verb+ Particle is one of the English phrasal verbs, and because of its multiple meanings, Chinese English learners easily confuse the meaning and make mistakes when acquiring and applying it, thus its becoming a major obstacle for English learners. The thesis tries to use emergent metaphor theory and construction grammar theory in cognitive pragmatics to analyze the semantic meaning of the four common particles down from the form and meaning of Verb +particle constructions, and then to use the meaning features to relate the specific meaning items of Verb + particle. participants, thus strengthening the ability to understand and use Verb +particle in specific contexts, and exploring a new path for English learners to understand the semantic meaning of Verb+ particle.

Abstract:This paper investigates the polysemy of the Chinese character shàng上“on/over” through the lens of Lakoff’s Image Schema and Radial Categories theories. In Mandarin Chinese, spatial expressions like shàng “on/over” exhibit diverse interpretations including static senses and dynamic senses, with the former revealing the information about the position of a person or an object while the latter indicating the motion. In addition to the concrete senses, they also manifest a range of abstract senses. Considering both the static and dynamic states of the senses of the character shàng上“on/over”, this study provides an in-depth analysis over the relationships between its core meanings and extended meanings through human’s cognitive processes, including adding information to the central schema and applying metaphorical extensions. As a result, two radial structures (one for the static senses, and the other for dynamic senses of shàng“on/over”) are obtained, demonstrating that the senses that are closer to the core are more prototypical, with the spatial meanings at the center and the non-spatial meanings radiating outward to the periphery.

Abstract:Formal Semantics and Distributional Semantics are two important semantic frameworks in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Cognitive Semantics belongs to the movement of Cognitive Linguistics, which is based on contemporary cognitive science. Each framework could deal with some meaning phenomena, but none of them fulfills all requirements proposed by applications. A unified semantic theory characterizing all important language phenomena has both theoretical and practical significance; however, although many attempts have been made in recent years, no existing theory has achieved this goal yet. This article introduces a new semantic theory that has the potential to characterize most of the important meaning phenomena of natural language and to fulfill most of the necessary requirements for philosophical analysis and for NLP applications. The theory is based on a unified representation of information, and constructs a kind of mathematical model called cognitive model to interpret natural language expressions in a compositional manner. It accepts the empirical assumption of Cognitive Semantics, and overcomes most shortcomings of Formal Semantics and of Distributional Semantics. The theory, however, is not a simple combination of existing theories, but an extensive generalization of classic logic and Formal Semantics. It inherits nearly all advantages of Formal Semantics, and also provides descriptive contents for objects and events as fine-gram as possible, descriptive contents which represent the results of human cognition.
