Abstract:Objective:To review the development history and status of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture,in order to provide references for future research. Methods:Based on clarifying the meaning and significance of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture,summarize the content and feature in each stage. Results:The development history contains three stage since 1994s:summary and quest of clinical experience,consult from expert advice,scientific and systematic review for devel-opment in theory. Conclusion:The study of modern medical conditions treated by acupuncture is a complex and systematic project,needs to be constantly improved as well. We hope to solve the question which medical conditions can be treated by acupuncture
Preliminary Study on the Reducing Effect of Acupuncture on Body Fat and Weight

Abstract:Objective To investigate the reducing effect of acupuncture on body fat and weight in normal weight persons.Methods Normal weight women were selected as subjects.Body weight and waistline were used as main observation indices.The reducing effects of body acupuncture and auricular-plaster therapy on body fat and weight were investigated.Results In the body acupuncture group,the effective rate was 92.5% for body weight and 97.5% for waistline.In the auricular-plaster therapy group,the effective rate was 40% for body weight and 32.5% for waistline.In the body acupuncture group,the weight was reduced by an average of 4.7 kg and the waistline,by an average of 6.9 cm.In the auricular-plaster therapy group,the weight was reduced by an average of 3.4 kg and the waistline,by an average of 2.5 cm.Conclusion Both body acupuncture and auricular-plaster therapy have a certain reducing effect on body weight,but the effect is significantly better in the body acupuncture group than in the auricular-plaster therapy group,and body acupuncture is even more effective in shortening the waistline.

Abstract:As a traditional Chinese alternative health care approach, acupuncture is gaining increasing attention and reputation in China and overseas. While becoming increasingly popular globally, some consumers and professionals still know little about the therapy and underlying mechanisms of acupuncture. Due to local superiority, there are large numbers of both clinical applications and mechanistic studies performed in China compared to countries overseas. Herein, this review attempts to give a comprehensive profile of the development, application, and mechanisms of acupuncture in treating major diseases. The number of clinical publications concerning acupuncture-treated neurological diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, etc. is first counted, and then, the application and therapeutic mechanisms of acupuncture on the predominant diseases in each category, including obesity, facial paralysis, sciatica, depression, hypertension, asthma, etc., are specifically discussed in this paper. The evolution of acupuncture tools and the rationality of acupoints are also discussed. This review not only summarizes the mechanisms of acupuncture but also provides useful information, such as specific acupoints and acupuncture procedures, for treating common diseases. Therefore, the current study provides useful information for both investigators and acupuncturists.

Abstract:Objective: Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical therapy that has shown effective results in the treatment of pressure injuries (PI). However, current clinical research methodologies have certain flaws that impact the evaluation of efficacy. This review aims to summarize the characteristics of existing clinical studies on acupuncture treatment for PI and analyze the current research status. Methods: Following the research methodology for scoping reviews, databases, including CNKI, Wanfang Data, China Biology Medicine, Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library, were searched. The search period covered from the inception of the databases up to February 22, 2024. The studies included were screened, summarized, and analyzed, extracting data from three aspects as follows: bibliometric data, patient information, and research design. Results: A total of 46 clinical studies were included. These comprised 30 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 11 case series, 2 case reports, and 3 controlled clinical trials. Filiform needle therapy was the most commonly used acupuncture technique. Acupuncture is basically performed locally on the wound surface. The clinical efficacy rate was the most frequently used outcome measure. Conclusions: Clinical studies on acupuncture for PI have issues such as nonstandard selection and reporting of outcomes, inconsistent indicator evaluation tools, and unclear concept of "randomization" in RCTs. These factors lead to significant heterogeneity among studies, affecting the assessment of treatment efficacy. Future research should strictly standardize the design and reporting of RCTs and promote the establishment of core outcome sets for acupuncture treatment of PI, to enhance the evidence quality of acupuncture clinical research.

Abstract:Acupuncture has been used to treat various disease for more than 3,000 years in China and other Asian countries. As a complementary and alternative therapy, it has gained increasing popularity and acceptance among public and healthcare professionals in the West. Over the past few decades, basic and clinical research on acupuncture has made considerable progress. Internationally recognized evidence from clinical studies has been published, a preliminary system to clinically evaluate acupuncture has been created, and some clinical guidelines have been formulated. Moreover, scientists have strived to explore the physiological and biological mechanisms of acupuncture. Some basic studies have indicated that acupuncture has various actions, such as analgesic, muscle relaxing, anti-inflammatory, mild anxiolytic, and antidepressant actions, with possible biological mechanisms such as central sensitization, neurotransmitters, the intestinal flora, immune regulation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. The current review describes the common indications for acupuncture recommended by the WHO and the use of acupuncture in China, the United States, Australia, and several other countries. This review then summarized the mechanisms by which acupuncture treats common conditions including lower back pain (LBP), ischemic stroke, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and it also cited specific acupuncture points for treating these conditions. The hope is that this review will provide useful information for both acupuncturists and researchers to better understand the mechanisms of acupuncture and reasons for its usage.

Abstract:The acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 3000 years and was spread to Europe and American from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The history of acupuncture research was initiated in the eighteenth century and developed rapidly since then. In the past, physicians tried hard to apply acupuncture into clinical practice, while scientists were focused on the possible characteristics of acupoints and meridians. In the modern time, scientists have strived hard to evaluate the real effectiveness of acupuncture and the underlying physiological and biological mechanisms of acupuncture. Reviewing research history from past to present, we are delighted to witness this wonderful development. Accumulated evidences that acupuncture is beneficial in various conditions significantly enhanced our understanding the mechanisms of acupuncture treatment. However, there is still no conclusive evidence in acupuncture clinical studies. The clinical research still needs great improving, while the basic research results need to be appropriately transformed into clinical outcomes. Based on current achievements, we believe that although the challenges and difficulties exist, a more collaborative, innovative, and integrated approach will help us to achieve further progress in future acupuncture research.

Abstract:Introduction With the wide development of acupuncture clinical practice, acupuncture research has been conducted worldwide, of which the most common method is quantitative study. However, research questions around acupuncture cannot always be addressed by quantitative studies due to their intrinsic characteristics. Qualitative studies can perfectly complement this knowledge gap in acupuncture research. To date, few qualitative studies on acupuncture research have been summarised. The objective of this scoping review is to review the application status of qualitative studies in the field of acupuncture research. Methods Ethics and dissemination As scoping reviews are a form of secondary data analysis, ethical review is not required. Our research results will provide future research direction for qualitative studies of acupuncture and be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication and related scientific conferences.

[Basic Characteristics of Simplex Reinforcing and Reducing Manipulations of Filiform Acupuncture Needle in Clinical Practice Based Upon Data Mining].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the regularities and features of clinical application of simplex reinforcing or reducing manipulation of filiform acupuncture needles by data mining in order to guide clinical decision in a better way.METHODS:A database about simplex reinforcing and reducing manipulations of filiform acupuncture needle was established first after collection, sorting, screening, type-in, and collation of the related papers, academic dissertations and theses of academic conferences published from January 1st of 1950 to January 31 of 2015 by using key word "acupuncture" "acupuncture and moxibustion" "needle manipulation" and "filiform needle" from database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI, a full-text database of Chinese journals), followed by data extraction and statistical analysis.RESULTS:A total of 1 304 articles were found to meet the standards formulated in the present study. Among them, 800 papers belong to the internal medicine covering apoplectic sequelae (153 papers), apoplexy (52), headache (63) and insomnia (60), 271 to surgery involving soft tissue injury (63) and backleg pain (46); 93 to five-sense-organs involving nasosinusitis (14), 64 gynecology involving dysmenorrhea (13), 41 to dematology involving struma (20), and 35 to pediatrics covering five kinds of tardy growth and five flaccid syndromes(8). These 1 304 papers contain 2 542 of simplex reinforcing and reducing manipulations, including 895 of twirling-thrusting reducing, 611 of twirling-rotating reinforcing, 571 of lifting-thrusting reducing, 303 of lifting-thrusting reinforcing, 32 of reinforcing and 32 of reducing in cooperation wihpatients' respiration, 23 open-close reducing, 12 open-close reinforcing, 21 reducing and 16 of reinforcing achieved by inserting the needle along or against the meridian, 14 rapid-slow reinforcing, and 12 rapid-slow reducing. Regarding the acupoint selection, distal and local acupoints are most frequently used, followed by symptoms-determined and syndrome-determined, respectively. The acupuncture needle retained time was from 0 min to 45 mn, and the therapeutic effect was relatively better for post-stroke. The totally therapeutic effects of the simplex reinforcing and reducing manipulations were 96.07% for problems of demotology, 94.19% for gynecology, 96. 58% for surgery, 92.85% for pediatrics, 91.78% for five-sense organs and 93. 70% for internal medicine, respectively.CONCLUSION:Simplex reinforcing and reducing manipulations of acupuncture has a definite effect in the treatment of different problems particularly in the internal medicine and surgery. Often, the twirling-rotating and lifting-thrusting reinforcing and reducing manipulations of acupuncture are employed in clinical practice.

Abstract:Recent developments in the field of clinical acupuncture in the USA and worldwide are reviewed. The discovery of beta-endorphin in support of acupuncture pain relief is discussed. Other neurotransmitters in relation to the mechanism of action of acupuncture are examined. The uses of acupuncture in treating functional disorders are listed and discussed. Supporting evidence from animal experimentation is examined. The electro-acupuncture according to Voll (EAV) system is introduced as a means to standardize the therapeutic effectiveness of acupuncture. With standardization of the therapeutic effectiveness of this procedure, the author sees acupuncture as a simple, economical and effective treatment modality.

Abstract:Traditionally, acupuncture is embedded in naturalistic theories that are compatible with Confucianism and Taoism. Such ideas as yin-yang, qi, dampness, and wind represent East Asian conceptual frameworks that emphasize the reliability of ordinary, human sensory awareness. Many physicians who practice acupuncture reject such prescientific notions. Numerous randomized, controlled trials and more than 25 systematic reviews and meta-analyses have evaluated the clinical efficacy of acupuncture. Evidence from these trials indicates that acupuncture is effective for emesis developing after surgery or chemotherapy in adults and for nausea associated with pregnancy. Good evidence exists that acupuncture is also effective for relieving dental pain. For such conditions as chronic pain, back pain, and headache, the data are equivocal or contradictory. Clinical research on acupuncture poses unique methodologic challenges. Properly performed acupuncture seems to be a safe procedure. Basic-science research provides evidence that begins to offer plausible mechanisms for the presumed physiologic effects of acupuncture. Multiple research approaches have shown that acupuncture activates endogenous opioid mechanisms. Recent data, obtained by using functional magnetic resonance imaging, suggest that acupuncture has regionally specific, quantifiable effects on relevant brain structures. Acupuncture may stimulate gene expression of neuropeptides. The training and provision of acupuncture care in the United States are rapidly expanding.

Abstract:The scientific evidence of acupuncture studies has been improved in recent years, and one of the important manifestations is that more and more acupuncture clinical trials and mechanism researches have been published in the source periodicals of Science Citation Index (SCI). This study summarized the dominant diseases of acupuncture focusing on of acupuncture efficacy and mechanisms, and discussed the existing problems, highlighting the direction of future developments. Most clinical studies were published in journals with journal impact factor (JIF) score of 10 or above, and majority of the basic researches had JIF scores of 5 to 10. The above literature were further divided according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The most concerned diseases in these articles were neurological diseases, musculoskeletal system and connective tissue diseases, tumor and digestive system diseases. The therapeutic effect and mechanism of acupuncture on each kind of disease were summarized. The results showed that the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on nerve injury focused on the anti-oxidation pathway, neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory processes. The antiinflammatory effect also played an important role in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. The analgesic effect was underlined in most of these studies. Clinical trials were well carried out on acupuncture curative effect of tumor complications and side effects of chemo-radiotherapy, but the potential mechanisms have not been clarified. Somato-visceral reflex was suggested to be strongly associated with the effects of acupuncture changing the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies indicated that non-specific effects play important roles in acupuncture analgesia. Lines of evidence have pointed out that the regulation of neuro-endocrine-immune networks may be a common switch of acupuncture on different nerve system diseases.

Abstract:For at least 2,500 years, acupuncture has been an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine. However, recently as more people in western countries are diagnosed with chronic disease poorly treated with modern medical therapies, many are turning to acupuncture and other forms of alternative medical treatments. Based on the theory of harmonious flowing qi being the basis of good health, acupuncture focuses on restoring qi by manipulation of the complementary and opposing elements of yin and yang. However, in the modern medical community we struggle to with the concept of qi, given a lack of anatomic and histological evidence supporting its existence. However, with the surge in public interest in acupuncture, the scientific community begun heavy investigation of acupuncture's efficacy, as well as the physiologic basis behind it. Thus far, evidence supports the use of acupuncture in post-operative nausea and vomiting, postoperative dental pain, chronic pain conditions such as lower back pain, and possibly also such psychologic conditions as addiction. It is possible that by affecting afferent nerve signaling, acupuncture may influence the release of endogenous opioids to promote pain relief. This effect may be augmented by release of ACTH and cortisol, as well as through down-regulation of signaling through pain fibers. When treating patients who may utilize alternative forms of medicine, it is important that medical practitioners be educated in regards to the basic fundamental beliefs behind acupuncture, as well as the scientific evidence supporting its use and revealing its efficacy. The purpose of this review is to give western trained physicians exposure to history, basic knowledge and its clinical applications of acupuncture to accommodate accelerating interests in acupuncture in modern society.

Abstract:The principle of acupoint stimulation efficacy is based on traditional meridian theory. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of acupoints in treating diseases remain unclear in modern scientific understanding. In this study, we selected the ST36 acupoint for investigation and summarized all relevant literature from the PubMed database over the past 10 years. The results indicate that stimulation of ST36 single acupoints has therapeutic effects mainly in models of respiratory, neurological, digestive, endocrine and immune system diseases. And it can affect the inflammatory state, oxidative stress, respiratory mucus secretion, intestinal flora, immune cell function, neurotransmitter transmission, hormone secretion, the network of Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICC) and glucose metabolism of the organism in these pathological states. Among them, acupuncture at the ST36 single point has the most prominent function in regulating the inflammatory state, which can mainly affect the activation of MAPK signaling pathway and drive the "molecular-cellular" mode involving macrophages, T-lymphocytes, mast cells (MCs) and neuroglial cells as the core to trigger the molecular level changes of the acupuncture point locally or in the target organ tissues, thereby establishing a multi-system, multi-target, multi-level molecular regulating mechanism. This article provides a comprehensive summary and discussion of the molecular mechanisms and effects of acupuncture at the ST36 acupoint, laying the groundwork for future in-depth research on acupuncture point theory.
[Progress of researches on non-specific effect of acupuncture]

Abstract:Acupuncture therapy is effective in the treatment of quite a lot of clinical conditions. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that acupuncture therapy not only has specific therapeutic effects, but also in a large part has non-specific effects such as the patient's and/or acupuncture practitioner's "unity of form and spirit", "treatment experience and environment" and "expectations and trust", etc. In the present article, we make a review about progresses of recent researches on the non-specific effect of acupuncture therapy and its influencing factors from 1) placebo acupuncture, 2) expectancy effect, 3) Hawthorne effect, and 4) Pygmalion effect. The placebo acupuncture intervention may enhance the therapeutic effect by triggering the cutaneous somatosensory afferents, brainstem, hypothalamus, limbic system, etc. to produce cognitive and emotional responses. The patient's expectancy and belief about acupuncture analgesia are associated with activities of the spino-thalamo-cortical pathway, cingulate gyrus, endogenous opioid system, emotional and reward circuits, etc. Regarding the Hawthorne effect and Pygmalion effect, it is supposed that the patients' behavioral tendency changes and higher expectations for acupuncture treatment may produce a positive impact on the outcomes of treatment. In-depth exploration of the influencing factors and the therapeutic targets of acupuncture treatment will further improve clinical effect, and serve the patients better.

Abstract:As a complementary and alternative therapy, acupuncture is widely used in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. However, the understanding of the mechanism of acupuncture effects is still limited due to the lack of systematic biological validation. Notably, proteomics technologies in the field of acupuncture are rapidly evolving, and these advances are greatly contributing to the research of acupuncture. In this study, we review the progress of proteomics research in analyzing the molecular mechanisms of acupuncture for neurological disorders, pain, circulatory disorders, digestive disorders, and other diseases, with an in-depth discussion around acupoint prescription and acupuncture manipulation modalities. The study found that proteomics has great potential in understanding the mechanisms of acupuncture. This study will help explore the mechanisms of acupuncture from a proteomic perspective and provide information to support future clinical decisions.
Preparation and immunogenicity of gold glyco-nanoparticles as antipneumococcal vaccine model.

Abstract:AIM Nanotechnology-based fully synthetic carbohydrate vaccines are promising alternatives to classic polysaccharide/protein conjugate vaccines. We have prepared gold glyco-nanoparticles (GNP) bearing two synthetic carbohydrate antigens related to serotypes 19F and 14 of Streptococcus pneumoniae and evaluated their immunogenicity in vivo. RESULTS A tetrasaccharide fragment of serotype 14 (Tetra-14), a trisaccharide fragment of serotype 19F (Tri-19F), a T-helper peptide and d -glucose were loaded onto GNP in different ratios. Mice immunization showed that the concomitant presence of Tri-19F and Tetra-14 on the same nanoparticle critically enhanced the titers of specific IgG antibodies toward type 14 polysaccharide compared with GNP exclusively displaying Tetra-14, while no IgG antibodies against type 19F polysaccharide were elicited. CONCLUSION This work is a step forward toward synthetic nanosystems combining carbohydrate antigens and immunogenic peptides as potential carbohydrate-based vaccines.

Abstract:The cross-disciplinary integration of acupuncture with modern medicine is an important guarantee to maintain its advantages. Based on 13896 acupuncture articles and 404726 references in the Web of Science Core Database, this paper analyzes the cross-disciplinary integration of acupuncture and modern medicine. It was found that the trend of cross-disciplinary integration between acupuncture and modern medicine is more and more obvious. Neurosciences, Anesthesiology, Oncology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Gastroenterology & Hepatology are the subjects with the most crossover and integration, accounting for 56% of the total disciplines. At the same time, more studies have begun to use modern medical methods to study the mechanism of acupuncture. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Pharmacy, and Medicine, Research & Experimental have been major areas of interdisciplinary collaboration in recent years. China, the United States, and South Korea are the three countries with the largest number of publications. Among them, Chinese scholars pay more attention to the role of acupuncture in the treatment of neurological diseases, Korean scholars pay more attention to drug acupuncture, especially bee venom acupuncture, and American scholars pay more attention to the role of acupuncture in pain management. However, acupuncture has less cross-disciplinary cooperation with heart and cardiovascular system, peripheral vascular disease, and even less with non-medical disciplines. Using modern medical technology and methods to carry out research on the mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion and strengthen the cooperation with informatics, statistics, physics and other disciplines may be an important direction for the modernization of acupuncture.

Abstract:The theory of acupoint specificity is the basis for elucidating the actions of acupoints as employed in clinical practice. Acupoint specificity has become a focus of attention in international research efforts by scholars in the areas of acupuncture and moxibustion. In 2006, the Chinese Ministry of Science approved and initiated the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), one area of which was entitled Basic Research on Acupoint Specificity Based on Clinical Efficacy. Using such approaches as data mining, evidence-based medicine, clinical epidemiology, neuroimaging, molecular biology, neurophysiology, and metabolomics, fruitful research has been conducted in the form of literature research, clinical assessments, and biological studies. Acupoint specificity has been proved to exist, and it features meridian-propagated, relative, persistent, and conditional effects. Preliminarily investigations have been made into the biological basis for acupoint specificity.
