Abstract:The cerebral cortices of Krieg's 2 area from young, adult and senescent Wistar rats were studied ultramicroscopically. The morphologic changes of neroglia in these three groups of animals demonstrated that the amount of lipofuscin pigment in glia cells and the frequency of glia satellitosis increased in the old rats. The subsurface complex (SSC) in some sites of neurons, where the neuroglial cells attached, occurred more frequently and more complex in structure in the old rats than those in the adult ones. The SSCs had rarely been seen in the young animals. In an old rat, an unusual myelin-like membraneous body was observed between an oligodendrocyte and a neuron. Some astrocytes in the old rats showed somewhat hypertrophied cytoplasm and increased microfilaments. Other obvious intracellular changes could not be found in the present study.
