Abstract:We propose a fast iterative image reconstruction algorithm for normal, short-scan, and super-short-scan fan-beam computed tomography (CT), which aims at iterative reconstruction for low-dose and few-view CT by minimizing a data-fidelity term regularized with a total variation (TV) penalty. The derivation of the algorithm can be outlined as follows. First, the original minimization problem is formulated into a saddle-point (primal-dual) problem by using the Lagrangian duality, to which we apply the alternating projection proximal (APP) algorithm, which belongs to a class of first-order primal-dual methods. Second, we precondition the iterative formula using the modified ramp filter of the filtered back-projection (FBP) reconstruction algorithm in such a way that the solution to this preconditioned iteration perfectly coincides with the solution to the original problem. The resulting algorithm converges quickly to the minimizer of the cost function. To demonstrate the advantages of our method, we perform reconstruction experiments using projection data from both numerical phantoms and real CT data. Both qualitative and quantitative results are presented.

Abstract:Study on fast and quantitative reconstruction algorithms for dynamic SPECT(4 dimension) under fan-beam geometry is conducted.The correlated information along time axis of projection sequences is de-correlated using Karhune-Loève(KL) transformation.Then we reconstruct all or part of the components in KL domain with Novikov's inverse formula,which is deduced for fan-beam geometry.The results can be obtained by inverse KL transform.The reconstruction can compensate for the non-uniform attenuation effectively.The results are similar to those from iterative approaches while there construction time is greatly abbreviated.The proposed method can reconstruct 4D SPECT fast and quantitatively and thus has a good future in clinical applications.
Comparison study on typical reconstruction algorithms for fan-beam geometric SPECT

Abstract:AIM: To study and compare three typical reconstruction algorithms for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) under fan-beam geometry in their performance of attenuation compensation. METHODS: Filtered back-projection(FBP), ordered subset expectation maximization(OS-EM) together with the Novikov’s inverse formula under fan-beam geometry were introduced and used to reconstruct the Shepp-Logan phantom. The computation time and image quality were compared. RESULTS: Novikov's inverse formula could achieve the image quality close to OS-EM, but with less computation time. CONCLUSION: The quantitative analytical reconstruction algorithm can compensate the non-uniform attenuation fast and effectively, thus having a great application foreground.

Abstract:In automated manufacturing and safety inspection, there is a high demand for fast computed tomography (CT) scanning and image reconstruction. Currently, faster scanning can be achieved by reducing the X-ray exposure time within sparse view CT. The faster scanning strategy introduces significant streak artefacts and noise during the sampling process. Consequently, streak artefacts and noise need to be simultaneously suppressed, which is poses a challenge for existing reconstruction methods. This paper presents a fast iterative reconstruction algorithm that can simultaneously suppress both streak artefacts and noise. This method can not only reconstruct high-fidelity images from rapidly acquired projection data, but also has a faster reconstruction speed than the existing iterative reconstruction algorithms. First, we present a high-order multi-directional total variation (HOM-TV) method that specifically focuses on preserving edge details of the image. Then, we present a fast iterative reconstruction model by incorporating HOM-TV and non-local means into the objective function. Finally, the effectiveness of the presented reconstruction model is validated by simulation and real experiments. The faster scanning method can complete the scan in only 5 seconds, and the structural similarity index (SSIM) of the CT image reconstructed by our method is 0.9755, which is higher than 0.0175 of the Fast Null Space Reconstruction (FNSR) algorithm. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) index is 1.656, which is higher than that of the contrast algorithm. In terms of reconstruction time, our algorithm can achieve reconstruction in as little as 36 seconds, outperforming the baseline algorithms.

Abstract:To improve CT image reconstruction speed of fan-beam filtered backprojection (FBP), thispaper proposes a method combining backprojection symmetry with iterative technique to reduce backprojection calculation. Research shows the speed can be improved about 23 times by this method, and it can’t bring reconstruction result new error.

Abstract:In cone-beam industrial CT,fieldkamp algorithm was often used to reconstruct image.Because its computational complexity is O(N4),the reconstruction process is very time-consuming on a general microcomputer.To improve its reconstruction speed,a method combining symmetry with recursion technique to reduce backprojection calculation is presented.The reconstruction speed and quality of this method are verified on a general microcomputer.Research result shows the speed is improved about 32 times via this method,and it can't bring reconstruction result new error.Fast reconstruction on a general microcomputer is realized.

Abstract:Time resolution is one of important properties of ICT techniques.It is a effective methods of impoving speed of reconstruction to adopt parallel algorithm;Based on Beowulf cluster,we have presented a parallel implementation of filter back-projection and presented an accelerated algorithm based on Intel Pentium SIMD technologies.On cluster flat constructed with four P4/2.9 G PC we have maken experiment of reconstruction using four groups of data collected by industrial CT collection.The results of experiment indicate that the reconstruct speed can be improved 4-6 times by using SIMD technique,accelerated 1.5-3 times by using cluster parallel technique,and accelerated 8-10 times by using these methods synthetically.

Abstract:Reconstruction speed and image quality are the keys of 3D image reconstruction in cone beam CT (CBCT), this article have researched on the 3D image reconstruction in CBCT, and a self-adapting fast reconstruction method for high resolution images is presented. The method is based on the FDK algorithm and Z-line data first algorithm, which introduces the reconstruction task division algorithm based on Z-line truncation, and load algorithm of filtered projection images based on the VOI reconstruction region. It divide the reconstruction task in a self-adapting method according to the task amount and memory size, thus reduce the data load amount and frequency of filtered projection images. The experimental results show that the method achieves fast reconstruction speed for high resolution images in CBCT, and the image quality almost has no difference with FDK algorithm.

Abstract:Image reconstruction is one of the key technologies of industrial computed tomography. Algebraic method has un-replaceable advantage when the data is incomplete or the noise effect is high because of data mining. However the use of algebraic method has been highly limited because of the low speed reconstruction. In this paper, a new iterative method (algorithm reconstruction technique) is introduced to accelerate the iteration process and increase the reconstruction speed. Besides, algebraic reconstruction method will be used more widely with the development of computer technology and increase of computer speed. Experiment results clearly demonstrate that algorithm reconstruction technique can efficiently improve quality of images reconstruction when processing the incomplete projection data or noisy projection data based on data mining.
Fast parallel image reconstruction with cone-beam ART algorithm based on SIMD technology

Abstract:Algebraic reconstruction technique(ART) is an iterative image reconstruction method, which is suitable for nondestructive detection of large industrial components. The shortcomings of ART are large amount of computation and extremely time cost. In order to improve the reconstruction speed of cone-beam ART, this paper presents a fast parallel image reconstruction method. Firstly, we propose a parallel method to calculate the weight coefficients and voxel indexes according to the symmetry of 3D ray in the scanning mode of cone-beam CT, which can get the weight coefficients and voxel indexes of two rays at the same time. Then, we use SIMD technology of Intel CPU, which can load a number of packed data at one time and realize parallel implementation of projection, calculation of image correction and back projection using SSE instructions. Experimental results show that our method is very effective and a reconstruction speedup about 1.5 times can be obtained without any loss of image reconstruction precision.

Abstract:The factors affecting the reconstruction speed and quality of ART(Algebraic Reconstruction Technique) is discussed,including the projection access method,relaxation factor and projection coefficient.A fast and real-time algorithm for projection coefficient computation is presented against the bottleneck of ART,which can determine the grid index and calculate the length of the grid intercepted by the ray through a distance parameter,the distance parameter is calculated incrementally,then much time is saved.The result shows that our algorithm is very effective and we can get a reconstruction speedup of over 6 times without any image precision loss compared with the Siddon algorithm.

Abstract:In order to accelerate imaging process and lower overall system cost, many practical CT systems use single slice detectors and big-pitch helical scanning, especially in next generation Baggage Scanning system. In this paper, we present a reconstruction strategy for this kind of systems. We researched on the imaging qualities resulting from different scanning parameters, especially the thickness of the detectors. The experimental study is both on simulation data and experimental data. We found out that reconstruction results from relatively thicker detectors are better than those from thinner detectors. We also compared post-processing methods of single dimensional smoothing and multi-dimensional smoothing in improving the imaging quality for such resulting reconstructions from single-slice-detector helical CT (SSDHCT). Finally, an implementation scheme of the reconstruction algorithm and post-processing using the latest GPU is presented. We achieve a 10 times speedup and the performance meets the requirement for practical applications. At last, we produced a sample machine using this technique, and get some real baggage scanning result. Our method works effectively in reality applications.

Abstract:Algebraic Reconstruction Technique(ART) is an iterative method for image reconstruction.Improving its reconstruction speed has been one of the important researching aspects of ART.For the simplified weight coefficients reconstruction model of ART,a fast grid traverse algorithm is proposed,which can determine the grid index by simple operations such as addition,subtraction and comparison.Since the weight coefficients are calculated at real time during iteration,large amount of storage is saved and the reconstruction speed is greatly increased.Experimental results show that the new algorithm is very effective and the reconstruction speed is improved about 10 times compared with the traditional algorithm.

Abstract:Three dimension Computed Tomography (CT) reconstruction is computationally demanding. To accelerate the speed of reconstruction, Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) or Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has been used, but they are expensive, inflexible and not easy to upgrade. The modern Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with its programmable features improves this situation and becomes one of the powerful and flexible tools for 3D CT reconstruction. In this paper, we implement Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm on commodity GPU using an acceleration scheme. In the scheme, two techniques are developed and combined. One is cyclic render-to-texture (CRTT) which saves the copy time, and the other is the combination of z-axis symmetry and multiple render targets (MRTs), which reduces the computational cost on the geometry mapping between slices to be reconstructed and projection views. Our algorithm performs reconstruction of a 5123 volume from 360 views of the size 512 x 512 about 5.2s on a single NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX card.

Abstract:There is mass redundant computation in conventional cone-beam CT reconstruction. To solve the problem,fast reconstruction of rectangular bounding box is implemented. By prejudgment of object volume,the number of voxels to be reconstructed is greatly reduced. According to the analysis of the principles of Z-line data priority algorithm,it is feasible to conduct parallel reconstruction. GPU is then applied to accelerate back-projection computation. The experimental results show that the proposed method has higher computing speed compared with Z-line data priority algorithm and that the proposed method can be adopted in CT systems which employ analogous reconstruction algorithms.

Abstract:Aiming at promoting the 3D image reconstruction of 3D Computed Tomography(CT),first gave the geometric description of the FDK method,and then educed the 3D fast image reconstruction algorithm using the programmable graphics hardware. At last made full use of the characters of GPU to implement the method.The result shows that the reconstruction speed is promoted effectively,and can get a reconstruction speedup of 8 times compared to the original algorithm.

Abstract:In order to solve the time-consuming problem in volume CT image reconstruction field, we brought forward a fast reconstructive algorithm method to fit the clinic medicine. First, using the great parallel and Floating-Point power of graphic processing unit (GPU), we proposed a volume CT GPU- based reconstruction method. Second, in order to reduce the repetitive operation, we separated the geometry computation and pixel computation. As a result, the computation efficiency was further improved. At last, based on the background of medical engineering, the parallel of volume CT scan and reconstruction was implemented. The results demonstrated that the volume CT reconstruction time could reduce up to 70 times compared to the previous one in common PC by the fast reconstructive algorithm method.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Due to large dimensional matrix multiplications, the existing iterative algorithms for cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction often face problems of heavy computational workload and large volume of memory usage. OBJECTIVE: This study proposes and tests an iterative algorithm of 3DA-TVAL3 for fast reconstruction of CBCT images using undersampled measurement data and the reduced amount of computer memories. METHODS: In order to reduce computational workload and computer memories based on the sparsity of the CBCT measurement matrix, the proposed iterative algorithm applies elementwise scalar multiplications in the iterative computation to search for optimal solution. Through a number of tests on three different CT data sets with different number of projections, the reconstruction performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of two accelerated iterative algorithms and the conventional FDK algorithm. RESULTS: The visual and quantitative evaluations using the normalized mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio and structural similarity metrics demonstrated the faster computational time and the higher image quality of using the proposed 3DA-TVAL3 algorithm than using other conventional algorithms under comparison. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed 3DA-TVAL3 algorithm can perform efficient and fast computation of CBCT reconstruction using the reduced amount of computer memories.
Fast image reconstruction with cone-beam ART algorithm

Abstract:To improve the reconstruction speed of cone-beam ART, this paper presents a fast algorithm based on projection for voxel traversal and intersection calculation along 3D ray. Firstly, the 3D ray is projected onto two perpendicular planes; then, the intersection situation between the projection line and planes is calculated; finally, the voxel index and length traversed by the 3D ray can be determined from the above intersection situation. Using this algorithm to calculate the weight coefficients during reconstructing on real-time can not only save large amount of memory, but also improve the speed of projection and back-projection. Based on the characteristic of the proposed algorithm, a strategy of processing column data first is used during reconstructing, thus unnecessary computation is reduced and the reconstruction speed is improved greatly. The result shows that the algorithm is very effective and the reconstruction speed is improved about 17 times compared with the conventional Siddon algorithm.

Abstract:In order to reduce radiation dose during CT scanning, sparse sampling is an effective way. Although the TV-based iterative reconstruction algorithm is a breakthrough to solve the problem of sparse-view CT image reconstruction, its applicability is still limited by huge computational burden. It is necessary to study the acceleration method of TV-based iterative algorithm. This paper show that the FISTA acceleration method is not suitable for POCS-TV algorithm, meanwhile, an improved acceleration method, IFISTA, is proposed to accelerate the convergence rate of POCS-TV. Numerical experiments show that the convergence rate of POCS-TV-IFISTA is about 35% faster than POCS-TV.
