Abstract:A sequential functional specification method was adopted to identify the surface heat flux in a two-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem for an orthotropic solid.The inverse problems were solved with the combination of the finite control volume method, the Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of future time step.The undetermined heat flux at each time step was denoted as one of the unknown variables in a set of nonlinear equations, which was solved by an iterative process.Results show that the estimated values agree well with the exact values in the examples, which proves that this method is an accurate, stable, and efficient one, thus it can be used to determine the surface heat flux in two-dimensional nonlinear inverse heat conduction problems.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a class of forward-backward heat equations. We use Saulyev's scheme to formulate certain approximation schemes. Then a non-overlap domain decomposition method is presented for the numerical solution. The numerical experiments show that the given algorithm is feasible and effective.

Abstract:A gradually implicit method with deferred correction (GIMDC) and adaptive relaxation factors (ARFs) is developed for simulation to nonlinear heat transfer with temperature-dependent properties. GIMDC is equivalent to explicit method initially and approaches implicit method gradually. The theoretical analyses of convergence, error and stability indicate that the accuracy and stability of GIMDC are close to implicit method if ARFs are utilized to guarantee convergence. A strict condition for ARFs is derived. GIMDC is compared with PEM (pure explicit method), NIM (Newton iterative method for implicit solution) and FEM (finite element method) which shows that GIMDC is of acceptable numerical accuracy (similar to NIM and 19.28% and 12.89% higher than PEM and FEM respectively in average) and higher efficiency. The numerical tests are presented which shows that using optimized ARFs (confined by strict condition), efficiency, accuracy and stability are ensured.

Abstract:In this paper we propose the finite difference method for the forward-backward heat equation. We use a coarse-mesh second-order central difference scheme at the middle line mesh points and derive the error estimate. Then we discuss the iterative method based on the domain decomposition for our scheme and derive the bounds for the rates of convergence. Finally we present some numerical experiments to support our analysis.

Abstract:A finite difference method is introduced to solve the forward-backward heat equation in two space dimensions. In this procedure, the backward and forward difference scheme in two subdomains and a coarse-mesh second-order central difference scheme at the middle interface are used. Maximum norm error estimate for the procedure is derived. Then an iterative method based on domain decomposition is presented for the numerical scheme and the convergence of the given method is established. Then numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Direct heat conduction problem (DHCP) and backward heat conduction problem (BHCP) are numerically solved by employing a new idea of fictitious time integration method (FTIM). The DHCP needs to consider the stability of numerical integration in the sense that the solution may be divergent for a specific time stepsize and specific spatial stepsize. The BHCP is renowned as strongly ill-posed because the solution does not continuously depend on the given data. In this paper, we transform the original parabolic equation into another parabolic type evolution equation by introducing a fictitious time variable, and adding a fictitious viscous damping coefficient to enhance the stability of numerical integration of the discretized equations by employing a group preserving scheme. When 10 numerical examples are amenable, we find that the FTIM is applicable to both the DHCP and BHCP. Even under seriously noisy initial or final data, the FTIM is also robust against disturbance. More interestingly, when we use the FTIM, we do not need to use different techniques to treat DHCP and BHCP as that usually employed in the conventional numerical methods. It means that the FTIM can unifiedly approach both the DHCP and BHCP, and the gap between direct problems and inverse problems can be smeared out.

Abstract:Recently,HON and WEI proposed a method of fundamental solutions to solving isotropic inverse heat conduction problems.It provides an efficient global approximation scheme in both spatial and time domains.In this paper,the inherently meshless and integration-free method is extended to solve 2D backward heat conduction problem in an anisotropic medium.Firstly,the fundamental solution to the governing equation is obtained through variables transformation.Then the truncated singular value decomposition and the L-curve criterion are applied to solve the resulting matrix equation which is highly ill-conditioned.Results for several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate its efficiency;the relationships between the accuracy of the numerical solutions and the value of the parameter T and the final time are also investigated.

Abstract:We consider a finite element discretization for the reconstruction of the final state of the heat equation, when the initial data is unknown, but additional data is given in a sub domain in the space time. For the discretization in space we consider standard continuous affine finite element approximation, and the time derivative is discretized using a backward differentiation. We regularize the discrete system by adding a penalty of the $H^1$-semi-norm of the initial data, scaled with the mesh-parameter. The analysis of the method uses techniques developed in E. Burman and L. Oksanen, Data assimilation for the heat equation using stabilized finite element methods, arXiv, 2016, combining discrete stability of the numerical method with sharp Carleman estimates for the physical problem, to derive optimal error estimates for the approximate solution. For the natural space time energy norm, away from $t=0$, the convergence is the same as for the classical problem with known initial data, but contrary to the classical case, we do not obtain faster convergence for the $L^2$-norm at the final time.

Abstract:A-posteriori error estimation theory and a practical and effective h-type adaptive procedure for numerical manifold element method are presented.The relative error factors of manifold element and discrete system are defined in energy norm.To estimate the relative error factors,the exact stresses are approximately determined through stresses on Gaussian points basing on the numerical manifold method and finite cover technology.All manifold elements with relative error factor determined to exceed a pre-assigned limit are automatically refined until the relative error factor of discrete system satisfies a prescribed demand.The corresponding program is coded and two examples,one is an L-shaped structure and the other is a soil slope,are analyzed.The results indicate that the procedure can give nearly optical mesh and is practical and effective for both regular problems and problems with strong singularities.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate a spherically symmetric backward heat conduction problem, starting from the final temperature. This problem is severely ill posed: the solution (if it exists) does not depend continuously on the final data. A conditional stability result of its solution is given. Further, we propose a quasi-boundary value regularization method to solve this ill-posed problem. Two HÃ¶lder type error estimates between the approximate solution and its exact solution are obtained under an a priori and an a posteriori regularization parameter choice rule, respectively.

Abstract:A high-order alternating direction implicit(ADI) method for solving two or three dimensional heat equations is proposed.The method is fourth order in space and second order in time.A von Neumann analysis shows that the method is unconditionally stable.It permits to use TDMA algorithm with a considerable save of computing time.Numerical experiments are conducted to test its high accuracy and to compare it with the second order Peaceman-Rachford scheme,Doulgas scheme and Crank-Nicolson scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical methods for both the forward and backward problems of a time-space fractional diffusion equation. For the two-dimensional forward problem, we propose a finite difference method. The stability of the scheme and the corresponding Fast Preconditioned Conjugated Gradient algorithm are given. For the backward problem, since it is ill-posed, we use a quasi-boundary-value method to deal with it. Based on the Fourier transform, we obtain two kinds of order optimal convergence rates by using an a-priori and an a-posteriori regularization parameter choice rules. Numerical examples for both forward and backward problems show that the proposed numerical methods work well.

Abstract:Abstract This paper studies a backward problem for a time fractional diffusion equation, with the distributed order Caputo derivative, of determining the initial condition from a noisy final datum. The uniqueness, ill-posedness and a conditional stability for this backward problem are obtained. The inverse problem is formulated into a minimization functional with Tikhonov regularization. Based on the series representation of the regularized solution, we give convergence rates under an a-priori and an a-posteriori regularization parameter choice rule. With a new adjoint technique to compute the gradient of the functional, the conjugate gradient method is applied to reconstruct the initial condition. Numerical examples in one- and two-dimensional cases illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In order to better understand micromechanical phenomena such as viscoelasticity and plasticity, the thermomechanical viewpoint is of prime importance but requires calorimetric measurements to be performed during a deformation process. Infrared imaging is commonly used to this aim but does not provide direct access to the intrinsic volumetric Thermomechanical Heat Sources (THS). An inversemethod is needed to convert temperature fields in the former quantity. The one proposed here relies on adiffusion-advection heat transfer model. Advection is generally not considered in such problems but due to plastic instabilities, a heterogeneous and non-negligible velocity field can play a role in the local heat transfer balance. Discretization of the governing equation is made through appropriate spectral approach. Spatial regularization is then achieved through regular modal truncation. The objective of the inversion process lies in a proper identification of the decomposition coefficients (states) which minimize the residuals. When a Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM) is applied to this nonlinear least square optimization, the use of Karhunen-Loeve Decomposition (KLD) or Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) on gradient vectors is shown to produce very good temporal regularization. Two test-cases were explored for noisy data which show that this algorithm performs very well when compared to the Tikhonov penalized conjugate gradient method.

Abstract:We consider the inverse heat conduction problem for the one-dimensional heat equation, where we are requested to determine a boundary value at one end of a spatial interval over a time interval and an initial value by means of Cauchy data at another end. By the existing theory we can prove the uniqueness in determining both a boundary value and an initial value, and our method does not require any initial value. We test our numerical method and show stable numerical reconstruction.

Abstract:We investigate the inverse problem of numerically identifying unknown initial temperatures in a heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions whenever some overdetermination data are provided after a final time. This is a backward parabolic problem which is severely ill-posed. As a first step, the inverse problem is reformulated as a minimization problem for an associated Tikhonov functional. Using the weak solution approach, an explicit formula for the Fréchet gradient of the cost functional is derived from the corresponding sensitivity and adjoint problems. Then, the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient is proved. Next, further spectral properties of the input–output operator are established. Finally, the numerical results for noisy measured data are performed using the regularization framework and the conjugate gradient method. We consider both one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments using finite difference discretization to illustrate the efficiency of the designed algorithm. Aside from dealing with a time derivative on the boundary, the presence of a boundary diffusion makes the analysis more complicated. This issue is handled in the 2-D case by considering the polar coordinate system. The presented method implies fast numerical results.

Abstract:In this paper a variant of nonlinear exponential Euler scheme is proposed for solving nonlinear heat conduction problems. The method is based on nonlinear iterations where at each iteration a linear initial-value problem has to be solved. We compare this method to the backward Euler method combined with nonlinear iterations. For both methods we show monotonicity and boundedness of the solutions and give sufficient conditions for convergence of the nonlinear iterations. Numerical tests are presented to examine performance of the two schemes. The presented exponential Euler scheme is implemented based on restarted Krylov subspace methods and, hence, is essentially explicit (involves only matrix-vector products).
