Abstract:Objective To sum up the experience in diagnosis and surgical management of spinal hemangioblastomas. Methods Data from the medical records of 12 patients with spinal hemangioblastomas microsurgically treated from 1997 to 2007 were reviewed. Also the surgical procedures and postoperative outcome were analyzed. Results MRI showed intramedullary tumors with clear boundary and apparent contrast enhancement in all cases.DSA images demonstrated the well-delineated homogeneous tumor stain. All of the tumors were radically resected.Haemangioblastoma was pathologically dianosed.Postoperative functional assessment showed that the function of motion and sensation were improved in 7 patients and 3 cases had no significant change.Immediate postoperative neurological function was worse in 2 cases, but their preoperative function recovered within 1 month. No operative complications were found.During the follow-up period of 6-60 months, there was no recurrence. Conclusion Spinal cord hemangioblastomas are relatively rare. The diagnosis relies on MRI.Most of the tumors can be safely removed in the majority of patients.
