Abstract:Tobacco essential oil is a complexity of tobacco secondary metabolites.It is mainly consisted of volatile and semi-volatile compounds.As an important source of tobacco characteristic aroma compounds,tobacco essential oil is mainly used as spices in cigarette blends nowadays.This paper mainly introduced the research progress of concept,chemical composition,extraction technology,analysis method and application of tobacco essential oil.The development prospect in these fields was also explored.
Effect of Fertilizing Steps on Soil Chemical Properties and Quality of Tobacco

Abstract:By field experiments,the soil chemical properties,tobacco growth and quality affected by different fertilizer treatments (such as chemical fertilizer,tobacco-specific fertilizer,organic manure,organic manure + chemical fertilizer).The results showed as follows,by applying organic manure + chemical fertilizer,soil organic matter,alkaline nitrogen,available phosphorus,available potassium contents were improved,and the difference reached the significantly levels than chemical fertilizer or organic manures,increased tobacco agronomical characteristics (effective leaf number,maximum leaf length,maximum leaf width,stem girth and tobacco yield),improved the quality of the flue-cured tobacco (for example total nitrogen,nicotine,total phosphorus,total potassium,total sugar,reducing sugar,chloride ),in which most of items reached significant differences among differnent treatments,revealed organic manure + chemical fertilizer treatment was better fertility patterns in this region,followed by organic manure and chemical fertlizer.By correlation analysis,the relationship reached the significant and remarkably signiifcant positive correlation among most of soil properties,tobacco agronomical characteristics and chemical qualities,indicated soil and tobacco growing were the synchronized and consist change after applied fertilizers.
EFFECTS OF GREEN MANURE CONTINUOUS APPLICATION ON SOIL MICROBIAL BIOMASS AND ENZYME ACTIVITY

Abstract:A three-year field experiment was carried out to study the effects of green manure application on the soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen and soil enzyme activities in order to provide a theoretical basis on low-carbon agriculture, environment-friendly agriculture and promote the sustainable development of tobacco production. Six treatments were set and were: check (CK) (contrast, no application of green manure), T1 (application of ryegrass only 1 year), T2 (application of ryegrass 2 years), T3 (application of oats 2 years), T4 (application of ryegrass 3 years), and T5 (application of oats 3 years), which was based on continuous planting oats and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) in our experiment. The results showed that soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and the activity of soil urease, acid phosphatase (ACP), sucrase, and catalase increased with each year and with the application of green manure. Compared with the control, after the application of green manure the content of soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen increased 1.94%–93.07% and 2.30%–145.07%, respectively, and the activity of soil urease, ACP, sucrase, and catalase increased 1.45%–56.52%, 2.34%–33.17%, 0.96%–172.66%, and 3.33%–85.71%, respectively. Correlation analysis indicated that soil microbial biomass carbon and soil enzymes activity had certain relevance that showed the dynamic process of soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity were coordinate with the decomposition process of green manure and the absorption of mine nutritional to tobacco plant. The results demonstrate that continuous application of green manure could increase soil biological fertility level.

Abstract:The authors utilized tung oil as a coating material(from the fruits of tung oil tree) to produce controlled-release fertilizer and studied the effects of this fertilizer on flue-cured tobacco in greenhouse soil-less cultivation. The results showed that preliminary solubility rate of controlled release composite fertilizer was 2.8%;compared with common fertilizer,individual yield of flue-cured tobacco with controlled-release compound fertilizer increased by 26.7g and controlled-release compound fertilizer per gram produced more flue-cured tobacco by 2.2g.

Abstract:Flavor is an important index to evaluate the sensory quality of tobacco. The process of fermentation is a key step in the production of aromatic substances in tobacco leaves and an important factor in improving their quality. Worldwide, reams of research show that chromatographic technology plays an irreplaceable role in the tobacco aromatic chemistry. Nevertheless, the degradation mechanism of latent aromatic compounds and the formation mechanism of characteristic aromatic substances have not been fully and systematically elucidated. In this study, the latest progress of basic methods, techniques, and research results of the separation, analysis, and identification of aromatic substances in fermented tobacco leaves were reviewed, and the next research and application directions were prospected. It is expected to provide theoretical reference for the study of molecular mechanism of tobacco flavor, reveal the degradation mechanism of potential aroma compounds, and help improve the quality of tobacco.

Abstract:A large amount of fresh tobacco waste with high water content are produced in farmland, and it may cause environmental pollution if it is not properly treated. The fresh tobacco waste is not easily collected and transported, resulting in its centralized treatment is expensive. This study is to clarify whether it is feasible to treat fresh tobacco wastes by co-composting of them and soil in farmland and applied the obtained compost product into the soil instead of a part of tobacco-specific fertilizer. The results showed that, compared with that in original soil, the relative abundance of Pseudomonas, Azotobacter, and Coprinus of the co-composted products increased by roughly 244%, 323%, and 675%, respectively, and effective nitrogen and available potassium increased by roughly 157% and 132%, respectively. In addition, the nicotine content in co-composted products decreased dramatically compared with the discarded tobacco leaves. The application of the co-composted products and 20% fertilizer amount (15 g/plant) (YD5) exhibited the highest relative abundance of beneficial microbial communities in the soil and the best growth of tobacco plants. The co-composting of fresh tobacco waste and soil in farmland is an effective measure to treat the fresh tobacco waste, and its products increased beneficial microorganisms and stimulate the growth of tobacco plants by replacing an amount of the fertilizer.

Alleviating Soil Acidification and Increasing the Organic Carbon Pool by Long-Term Organic Fertilizer on Tobacco Planting Soil

Abstract:Long term tobacco planting leads to soil acidification. A ten-year experiment with various fertilization treatments (no fertilization (CK), chemical fertilizer (CF), organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OCF), and organic fertilizer (OF)) was carried out between 2010 and 2020 in a continuous cropping system of Nicotiana tabacum in the brown soil of eastern China, to assess the effects of organic fertilizer on the improvement of tobacco planting soil acidification. The results indicated that treatments OCF and OF reduced the soil exchangeable acid content, of which the exchangeable aluminum showed the largest reduction by 51.28% with the OF treatment. In contrast, treatment CF showed more significant increases in exchangeable aluminum (Al) and Al saturation, and also apparently increased soil NO3−-N, NH4+-N and nitrification potential (NP) than other treatments. Treatments of OCF and OF significantly increased the total amount of exchangeable base (EBC) by 37.19% and 42.00% compared with CF, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that NP, NH4+-N, and NO3−-N were the important factors indicating soil acidification, while EBC and exchangeable K were the significant factors restricting soil acidification. Inevitably, OCF could improve the soil organic carbon pool and labile organic carbon pool. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that OCF treatment increased the soil organic carbon pool mainly by inhibiting soil nitrification and reducing the content of exchangeable Al. In conclusion, both OF and OCF treatments were effective methods to alleviate tobacco planting soil acidification, however OCF had more advantages in improving soil organic carbon pool.

Abstract:In order to explore the effects of compound bio-organic fertilizer mixed with Bacillus subtillis and EM bacteria upon flue-cured tobacco photosynthetic physiological characters & soil microbes,this paper analyzed growth and development,photosynthetic physiological characteristics,economic characters index,chemical compound usable index (CCUI),and soil microbes of flue-cured tobacco 7 d after topping,through comparing the different combined application of this compound bio-organic fertilizer with single chemical fertilizer.The results indicated that the net photosynthetic rate,high-class tobacco rate,average price,yield and value of yield of the compound bio-organic and tobacco economic character index (ECI) were increased by 15.0％～ 18.1％,6.84％～ 9.50％,2.86％～ 3.70％,9.91％～11.90％ and 13.0％～ 16.0％,respectively,compared with the single chemical fertilizer treatment.The usable index (CCUI) of B2F & C3F were increased by 5.78％～ 6.06％ and 3.54％～ 5.28％,respectively,compared with the single chemical fertilizer treatment.And the total amount of 3 microbes,soil-bacteria,fungus and actinomycetes was significantly higher than that by the single chemical fertilizer treatment.This study revealed effect of bio-organic fertilizer application on soil of southern China tobacco/rice rotation regions,where soil fertility was decreased,damages by soil-born diseases became serious,and tobacco yield and quality were all deteriorated owing to the long-term chemical fertilizer application.This paper provided new technical measures for improving soil,where flue-cured tobacco was planted.
Response of the Flue-cured Tobacco Growth and Development Characters,Yield and Quality to the Fertilizer Application Technology

Abstract:In order to explore the response of the flue-cured tobacco growth and development characters (G & Ds),yield and quality to the fertilization technology,a comparative study of the response difference of the flue-cured tobacco G & Ds,yield and quality on three fertilizer application types of bio-organic fertilizer,green fertilizer and chemical fertilizer was carried.The result was showed that the treatment of bio-organic and green fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer increased root system volume,improved photosynthetic leaves areas and net photosynthetic rate (Pn),accelerated flue-cure tobacco G & Ds,reduced soil-borne diseases,increased the ratio of first-class tobacco leaves,improved flue-cure tobacco leaves quality,and increased yield and out-put value.The indexes such as economic character index (ECI),chemical components usability index (CCUI),the ratio of the first-class tobacco leaves,yield and out-put value of the treatment with bio-organic manure were 88.7,71.0,72.1,43.68％,2 436.5 kg · hm-2 and 64 079.9 yuan · hm-2 respectively,higher than the other two kinds of treatment.Next was the treatment of green fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer,followed by that of pure chemical fertilizer.The yield and out-put value of the treatment with combined application of bio-organic fertilizer was significantly higher than that of the other treatments.Consequently,the response effect of bio-organic fertilizer on the flue-cured tobacco growth and development characters,yield and quality to the fertilization technology is the best,and then comes the response effect of the treatment of green fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer and that of the pure chemical fertilizer comes last.The above results provide effective measures for organic fertilizer and green fertilizer utilization and a theoretical basis for promoting the flue-cured tobacco quality.
Brief Study on Microelement Contents in Topsoils of Farmlands in Xuancheng, South Anhui

Abstract:The available contents of microelements in the topsoil can influence the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco. Xuancheng is the dominant tobacco-planting region in Anhui province since 2008. In this paper, the topsoil available Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn contents of 4197 farmlands mainly under rice-rice rotation and wheat-rice rotation in 2008 and of 124 typical farmlands under tobacco-rice rotation in 2015 in Xuancheng city were analyzed in order to disclose the changes and spatial distributions of these microelements and to instruct the reasonable application of the microelement fertilizers. The results showed that the topsoil average available contents in the farmlands under rice-rice rotation or wheat-rice rotation in 2008 were 105.9 mg·kg-1 for Fe, 19.6 mg·kg-1 for Mn, 4.5 mg·kg-1 for Cu, and 3.0 mg·kg-1 for Zn, respectively, increased by 33.14%, 64.29%, 51.11% and 36.67%, respectively, compared with those in the 2nd Soil Survey in 1980s, and the historic, once intensive and overall application of microelement fertilizers was attributed to the great increases. The topsoil average available contents in the farmlands under tobacco-rice rotation in 2015 were 31.1 mg·kg-1 for Fe, 9.8 mg·kg-1 for Mn, 2.1 mg·kg-1 for Cu, and 0.3 mg·kg-1 for Zn, respectively, decreased by 70.63%, 50.00%, 53.33% and 90.00%, respectively, compared with those of the farmlands under rice-rice rotation or wheat-rice rotation in 2008, and the net deficiencies in the input and output of microelements were attributed to the significant decreases in the topsoil microelements. It is necessary to monitor the farmlands under tobacco-rice rotation dynamically and in time in order to decide whether applying microelement fertilizers or not.

Soil microbiological assessment on diversified annual cropping systems in China

Abstract:Recent studies have demonstrated that monocropping of flue-cured tobacco can lead to various issues, including nutrient deficiencies, accumulation of allelopathic substances, and disturbance in soil microbial flora. While diversification in cropping systems has proven effective in alleviating monocropping barriers, however, further exploration is needed to understand the potential microbial mechanisms involved in this process. In our study, we set five cropping systems (RR: rice monocropping; TR: tobacco-rice rotation over 20 years; TRA: tobacco-rice-astragalus rotation; TRW: tobacco-rice-wheat rotation; TRO: tobacco-rice-oilseed rape rotation) to explore the impact on crop yield and quality, soil chemical properties, and microbial diversity. The results showed that the yield and gross margin were significantly decreased. Following diversification in cropping systems, particularly after implementing the TRA treatment, the yield and gross margin increased by 27.35% and 38.67%, respectively, compared to the TR treatment. Additionally, the presence of tobacco in the soil resulted in acidification, reduced soil fertility, and suppression of soil microorganism diversity and metabolite abundance. With diversification in cropping systems, there was an increase in soil pH, carbon and nitrogen cycle enzyme activities, and the relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms (acidobacteria, nitrospirillum, and ascomycota) and soil metabolites. Diversification in cropping systems has the potential to increase crop biomass, soil fertility, and soil microbial environment. Our results suggest a scientific foundation for implementing effective nutrient management practices and rational crop rotation systems.

Abstract:The excessive use of synthetic chemicals in agriculture demands sustainable alternatives to combat crop-affecting microorganisms. Plant-derived secondary metabolites have garnered attention as promising candidates with antimicrobial properties. This study investigates the antimicrobial potential of tobacco plants, specifically non-commercial accessions Nic 1015 (“TI 1341”) and BHmN, recognized for their rich bioactive compounds. Our objectives encompassed the extraction of leaf surface compounds and the assessment of their in vitro antimicrobial activity against crop-damaging microorganisms. Ethanol-based extracts, abundant in diterpenes, were meticulously analyzed. Notably, BHmN contained cis-abienol, while both accessions featured α-CBT diol, as confirmed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). TLC-Bioautography and microdilution assays unveiled substantial antifungal activity. The growth inhibition percentages correlated with extract concentrations, highlighting the pivotal role of diterpenes. These extracts exhibited pronounced efficacy against Rhizoctonia solani and Stemphylium solani but displayed relatively weaker activity against Sarocladium oryzae. Notably, Nic 1015 extract demonstrated remarkable antifungal activity at a minimal concentration of 78 μg·mL−1, while cis-abienol and sclareol inhibited the growth of Fusarium graminearum and Alternaria alternata. Additionally, the extracts demonstrated in vitro antibacterial activity against common plant culture contaminants, Bacillus licheniformis and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. In conclusion, the findings underscore the potential of these extracts as effective tools for controlling pathogenic fungi and bacterial contaminants in plant in vitro cultures. Harnessing plant-derived secondary metabolites, especially those from tobacco leaf surface, presents a sustainable and eco-friendly strategy to mitigate the detrimental impact of microorganisms on agricultural crops, promising a greener alternative to synthetic chemical products.

Abstract:The relationship between wettability and surface microstructure in a wide range of crop leaves from biological and interfacial structural perspectives is revealed. Crop production and quality safety system have the potential to nurture human health and improve environmental sustainability. Providing a growing global population with sufficient and healthy food is an immediate challenge. However, this system largely depends on the spraying of agrochemicals. Crop leaves are covered with different microstructures, exhibiting distinct hydrophilic, hydrophobic, or even superhydrophobic wetting characteristics, thus leading to various deposition difficulties of sprayed droplets. Here, the relationship between wettability and surface microstructure in different crop leaves from biological and interfacial structural perspectives is systematically demonstrated. A relational model is proposed in which complex microstructures lead to stronger leaf hydrophobicity. And adding surfactant with a faster dynamically migrating velocity and reducing droplet size can improve agrochemical precise deposition. These contribute toward highly accurate and efficient targeted applications with fewer agrochemicals use and promote sustainable models of eco‐friendly agriculture systems.

Abstract:A 3-year fxed-site feld trial was carried out to study effects of different tillage and mulching methods on tobacco yield and quality in Luzhou. Results showed that tillage treatment could effectively improve plant height, stem diameter, pitch, and effective leaf number of tobacco than no-tillage treatment, thus increased tobacco yield and output value. Content of total sugar and reducing sugar was reduced while content of nitrogen, kalium and nicotinamide was increased, which ameliorated tobacco quality. Crop rotation under tillage treatment had signifcant effects on tobacco yield, output value and quality. Moreover, crop rotation and straw mulching could improve plant height, stem diameter and pitch, which also improved tobacco yield and output value. Therefore, the most appropriate cultivation pattern for tobacco yield and quality should be the crop rotation in the order of green manure- tobacco, green manure/wheat/corn, and green manure- tobacco.

Abstract:Smash-ridge tillage is a novel cultivation technique that significantly influences the quality of arable land and crop yield. In this study, we employed high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing and Biolog-ECO methods to systematically investigate the impact of smash-ridge tillage on soil microbial community structure and functional diversity. The results demonstrate that both ST30 and ST50 treatments significantly enhance the average plant height, average plant diameter, average fresh root weight, stem fresh weight, and leaf area of tobacco plants, with the ST50 treatment exhibiting superior performance. Furthermore, both ST30 and ST50 treatments exhibit significantly higher soil enzyme activity and microbial community diversity compared to the CK treatment. They also improve the soil microbial utilization of carbon sources. Additionally, the ST50-treated soil samples demonstrate 15 microbial functional pathways that exceed those of the CK and ST30 treatments. In conclusion, the Smash-ridge tillage treatment at a depth of 50 cm yields more favorable results. This study provides a theoretical foundation for enhancing soil quality in Smash-ridge tillage by elucidating the mechanisms through which it impacts soil microbial ecology.

Microbial Responses to the Reduction of Chemical Fertilizers in the Rhizosphere Soil of Flue-Cured Tobacco

Abstract:The overuse of chemical fertilizers has resulted in the degradation of the physicochemical properties and negative changes in the microbial profiles of agricultural soil. These changes have disequilibrated the balance in agricultural ecology, which has resulted in overloaded land with low fertility and planting obstacles. To protect the agricultural soil from the effects of unsustainable fertilization strategies, experiments of the reduction of nitrogen fertilization at 10, 20, and 30% were implemented. In this study, the bacterial responses to the reduction of nitrogen fertilizer were investigated. The bacterial communities of the fertilizer-reducing treatments (D10F, D20F, and D30F) were different from those of the control group (CK). The alpha diversity was significantly increased in D20F compared to that of the CK. The analysis of beta diversity revealed variation of the bacterial communities between fertilizer-reducing treatments and CK, when the clusters of D10F, D20F, and D30F were separated. Chemical fertilizers played dominant roles in changing the bacterial community of D20F. Meanwhile, pH, soil organic matter, and six enzymes (soil sucrase, catalase, polyphenol oxidase, urease, acid phosphatase, and nitrite reductase) were responsible for the variation of the bacterial communities in fertilizer-reducing treatments. Moreover, four of the top 20 genera (unidentified JG30-KF-AS9, JG30-KF-CM45, Streptomyces , and Elsterales ) were considered as key bacteria, which contributed to the variation of bacterial communities between fertilizer-reducing treatments and CK. These findings provide a theoretical basis for a fertilizer-reducing strategy in sustainable agriculture, and potentially contribute to the utilization of agricultural resources through screening plant beneficial bacteria from native low-fertility soil.
