Abstract:In this paper, a new equation of state for polymers is derived theoretically. A comparison of the equation with experimental data is made for 6 polymers at different temperatures and pressures. The results obtained show that the equation of state is suitable to describe the isothermal compressing behaviour of polymers in the state without transitions.

Abstract:A local composition model based on the lattice theory, which is a modified non-random two-liquid (NRTL) equation, is developed for the representation of the Helmholtz free energy of polymer solutions. A simple temperature dependence of the model parameters is introduced to account for the oriented interactions without changing the general formulation of the free energy of mixing. The model provides a flexible thermodynamic framework for both correlating and predicting the phase equilibrium of polymer solutions. Special attention is paid to the representation of phase behavior of homologous polymer solutions and systems with or without oriented interactions.

Abstract:Despite an interparticle potential consisting of only an infinite repulsion at contact, the thermodynamics and dynamics of concentrated dispersions of hard spheres are not yet fully understood. Colloidal poly-(methyl methacrylate) spheres with a grafted layer of poly-(12-hydroxy stearic acid) (PMMA-PHSA) comprise a common model for investigating structural, dynamic, and rheological properties. These highly monodisperse spheres can be index matched in nonaqueous solvents, reducing van der Waals forces and allowing characterization via Light scattering. In this work, we test the behavior of these dispersions against expectations for hard spheres through observations of the phase behavior, x-ray densitometry of equilibrium sediments, and Zimm viscometry. We set the effective hard sphere volume fraction by the disorder-order transition, thereby accounting for the polymer layer, any swelling due to the solvent, and polydispersity. The melting transition then occurs close to the expected value and the equation of state for the fluid phase, extracted from the equilibrium sediment with x-ray densitometry, conforms to the Carnahan-Starling equation. However, the osmotic pressure of the crystalline phase lies slightly above that calculated for a single fee crystal even after accounting for polydispersity. Likewise the high shear viscosity of the fluid compares well with other hard sphere dispersions, but the low shear viscosity for PMMA-PHSA hard spheres exceeds those for polystyrene and silica hard spheres, e.g., a relative viscosity of 45+/-3 at phi=0.50 rather than 24. Our low shear viscosities are consistent with other PMMA-PHSA data after rescaling for both the polymer layer thickness and polydispersity, and may represent the true hard sphere curve. We anticipate that the equation of state for the crystal deviates due to polycrystallinity or a direct effect of polydispersity.

Abstract:The role of pressure on the phase diagram of polymer liquids and also polymer mixtures has been intensely studied in the past decades, and there has been increased interest in the effects of pressure on the miscibility of polymers(An et al. 1997; An & wolf, 1998; Blaum & Wolf, 1976; Geerissen et al. 1985; Hammouda & Bauer, 1995; Hosokawa et al. 1993; Lefebvre et al. 2000; Maderek et al. 1983; Rabeony et al. 1998; Wolf & Blaum, 1976, 1977; Wolf & Jend, 1977,1978). One reason is the need for such data to more fully understand polymer miscibility in relation to the various proposed theories and equations of state. Another is the realization that such pressure effects could be important in many situations where such blends are used, e.g., when mixing a blend in an extruder or in forming articles from a blend by injection molding. These needs have led to the development of pressure cells that can be used with both light and neutron scattering such that the phase behavior and interaction strengths of blends can be measured. In past work, a wide range of phase behavior at chosen composition or near critical point of polymer solutions and polymer blends was found(Beiner et al. 1998, 2002; Blaum & Wolf, 1976; Hammouda et al. 1997; Janssen et al. 1993; Lefebvre etal 1999; Schwahn et al. 2001; Wolf & Blaum, 1977; Wolf & Jend, 1977; Zeman P Zeman et al. 1972). There are also many works on the theories about the pressure effects on the thermodynamics of polymer liquid and blends(An et al. 1997; An & wolf, 1998; Dudowicz & Freed, 1995, 2006; Kumar, 2000; Patterson & Robard, 1978; Walsh & Rostami, 1985). As several outstanding problems remain unexplained in these blends, we decided to investigate the dependence on pressure, an independent thermodynamic variable. The phase behavior of polymer liquids is commonly described in the terms of the lattice model of Flory and Huggins (FH), and the thermodynamics of typical polymer containing systems are understood in the framework of the incompressible random phase approximation. According to original FH theory, the rigorous incompressible system should be unaffected by pressure. In contrast to rigid lattice theories, equation-of-state (EOS) theories are capable of predicting the thermodynamics of polymer containing systems.
Pressure-volume-temperature relationships for polymeric liquids : a review of equations of state and their characteristic parameters for 56 polymers

Abstract:A review of theoretical equations of state for polymer liquids is presented. Characteristic parameters for six equations of state, as well as parameters for the empirical Tait equation, are given for 56 polymers where pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) data over a wide range of conditions could be found in the literature. New PVT data are presented for four polymers: poly(epichlorohydrin), poly(ϵ-caprolactone), poly(vinyl chloride), and atactic polypropylene. All six equations of state provide adequate fits of the experimental specific volume data for the 56 polymers in the low pressure range (up to 500 bar). The modified cell model of Dee and Walsh, the Simha–Somcynsky hole theory, the Prigogine cell model, and the semiempirical model of Hartmann and Haque, were all found to provide good fits of polymer liquid PVT data over the full range of experimental pressures. The Flory–Orwoll–Vrij and the Sanchez–Lacombe lattice–fluid equations of state were both significantly less accurate over the wider pressure range. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The Internal Pressure and New Solubility Parameter of Polymeric Liquids

Abstract:The parameters of empirical Tait equation have been regressed for a lot of polymeric liquids from their pVT data . The isochores at different densities can be obtained from these parameters. A good lineal relationship between the logarithm of slop of isochores and the densities is found for many polymers. Therefore, a generalized internal pressure equation with two characteristic constants which are determined by the slop and intercept of the relationship straight line respectively is established . The internal pressure of various polymeric liquids at 298.15K can be accurately calculated from this equation and the values of new solubility parameter defined by our previous work[4] are obtained for 90 polymers .

Abstract:The characteristic parameters for three different equation-of-state (EOS) theories have been determined for polystyrene and low-molecular weight polyisoprene using pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data. Basically two procedures for the calculation of characteristic parameters were applied. The characteristic parameters were calculated, firstly, from coefficients of expansion, compressibilities and densities, and secondly, by fitting the corresponding EOS to PVT data minimizing the sum of the squares of the differences between experimental and calculated pressures. The characteristic parameters obtained by the two methods are compared with regard to their ability to describe PVT data. A comparison of the three different EOS theories reveals that, for describing polymeric liquids, the modified cell model of Dee and Walsh is superior to the theory of Flory, Orwoll and Vrij as well as to the lattice fluid theory of Sanchez and Lacombe. Finally, formulae are given to convert the characteristic parameters from one theory into those of another.

Abstract:In this work, the extended Lennard-Jones potential-based equation of state (ELJ-based EoS) on which the effective near-neighbour pair interactions are LJ (12,6,3) type has been used to predict the specific volume and other thermodynamic properties of some semi-crystalline and liquid polymers and copolymers up to extremely high temperature–high pressure conditions. It seems that, at least in the dense regions, there are no upper- and lower-specific volume limitations in the applicability of the model for different polymeric systems. The parameters can be determined at any temperature for each compound using the temperature dependence of the parameters of ELJ-based EoS. The calculated parameters have been used to calculate the specific volume and other derived thermodynamic properties of different polymeric systems at any temperature and pressure. The ELJ-based EoS has been also compared with some previous studies.

Universality of Osmotic Equation of State in Star Polymer Solutions

Abstract:We experimentally measure the osmotic pressures of linear polymers and three-, four-, and eight-arm star polymers in a good solvent via membrane osmometry. These results reveal that the osmotic equations of state in the star polymer solutions are universally described by the same scaling function that describes linear polymer solutions. This universality is achieved by canceling increasing overlap concentrations and decreasing osmotic pressure, owing to the increased arm number. We further clarify the molar mass and arm number dependencies of the gyration radius and interpenetration factor, ensuring universality in star polymer solutions.

Abstract:The elastic properties of a fully aromatic polyimide were measured for the first time by Brillouin scattering in a high-pressure diamond anvil cell. Its isothermal compressibility and pressure dependence of mechanical moduli (K-s, E, and G) were studied and determined up to 6.4 GPa. Further, piezochromic behavior of the polyimide film was observed and studied in detail by spectroscopic analysis. Pressure-induced red shift of the absorption edge and a hysteretic phenomenon were found, due to an enhancement of the van der Waals interaction upon decreasing the interchain distances and partially collapsing the free volume under extreme pressure. A comprehensive study of elastic properties and piezochromism behavior of polyimide film under high pressure will provide useful information for developing pressure sensitive coatings, pressure sensors, pressure resistance parts and components. Experimental and simulation study of the high-pressure behavior of squalane and poly-α-olefins

Abstract:The equation of state, dynamical properties, and molecular-scale structure of squalane and mixtures of poly-α-olefins at room temperature are studied with a combination of state-of-the-art, high-pressure experiments and molecular-dynamics simulations. Diamond-anvil cell experiments indicate that both materials are non-hydrostatic media at pressures above ∼1 GPa. The equation of state does not exhibit any sign of a first-order phase transition. High-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments on squalane show that there are no Bragg peaks, and hence, the apparent solidification occurs without crystallization. These observations are complemented by a survey of the equation of state and dynamical properties using simulations. The results show that molecular diffusion is essentially arrested above about 1 GPa, which supports the hypothesis that the samples are kinetically trapped in metastable amorphous-solid states. The shear viscosity becomes extremely large at very high pressures, and the coefficient governing its increase from ambient pressure is in good agreement with the available literature data. Finally, simulated radial distribution functions are used to explore the evolution of the molecular-scale structure with increasing pressure. Subtle changes in the short-range real-space correlations are related to a collapse of the molecular conformations with increasing pressure, while the evolution of the static structure factor shows excellent correlation with the available x-ray diffraction data. These results are of indirect relevance to oil-based lubricants, as the pressures involved are comparable to those found in engines, and hence, the ability of lubricating thin films to act as load-bearing media can be linked to the solidification phenomena studied in this work.

Abstract:Based on the thermodynamic perturbation theory for polymer, a new equation is proposed by incorporating a wide range of molecular flexibility and perturbative interactions to describe the isotropic-anisotropic (nematic) phase transition phenomena of the semiflexible polymers. In the new equation, the framework of the Helmholtz free energy of the system is the same as the Onsager-like theory. The entropy loss due to the orientation is estimated by the Khokhlov-Semenov (KS) theory. With regard to the configurational free energy, the polymer is envisioned as a series of subchains. The Parsons-Lee approximation is used to account for the higher virial coefficients of the subchain and Yu equation for the hard-sphere-chain fluid is adopted to modify the defect of the first order approximation in dealing with the associating points. An analytical expression of the perturbative term is obtained by employing the "square peg in a round hole" potential function and the mean-field approximation. The hard-core part of the equation reduces to the Dupre-Yang theory when the stiffness of the molecule is high. When the model approaches the limit of the random coil, a modified equation of the hard-sphere-chain fluid is obtained. The present theory has been used to predict the isotropic-nematic phase equilibrium for real semiflexible polymers with two adjustable parameters. The agreements between the theoretical results and experimental data are much better than that of previous theories.

Abstract:We show with a recently devised extended first-principles molecular dynamics method that calculated Hugoniots of poly-α-methylstyrene agree well with precision experimental results of Kritcher et al. [Nature (London) 584, 51 (2020)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-020-2535-y] and Döppner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 025001 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.121.025001]. The deviation is smaller than 0.8%. This agreement does not sensitively rely on the approximations in the employed first-principles methods as long as underlying physics are well described, as illustrated in the calculation of equation of state for polystyrene covering the warm dense regime. These results may stimulate a broad range of quantitative investigations on warm dense matter that were not thought possible before, and may thus afford a new prospect to the field of inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics.

Abstract:Volumetric data of the polyoxyethylene (POE)/water system at 25°C and pressures up to 40 MPa are reported together with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of dilute solutions of POE in water at 25°C and pressures up to 200 MPa. The combination of both data is used to interpret the variation of the radius of gyration and the second virial coefficient of POE with pressure by means of existing theories on dilute polymer solutions. This allows the evaluation of the unperturbed dimensions of POE in water at 25°C.

Abstract:In this paper it is shown that the relationship of bulk modulus with pressure, B=f(P), should be linear both at low and high-pressure limiting conditions. Because most of present equations of state (EOS) for solids cannot satisfy such linear relationship at high pressure, a new function f(P) is proposed to satisfy the linearity. By integrating the bulk modulus, an EOS with three parameters and satisfying the quantum-statistics limitation is derived. It is shown that the EOS can be reduced to two-parameter EOS approximately satisfying the limiting condition. By applying the two EOSs and other three typical EOSs to 50 materials, it is concluded that for materials at low and middle-pressure regimes, the limiting condition does not operate, the Baonza EOS gives the best results, but it cannot provide analytic expression for cohesive energy. The Vinet and our second EOSs are slightly inferior, both EOSs can provide analytic expression for cohesive energy, and for materials at high-pressure regimes our second EOS gives the best results. The Holzapfel and our first EOSs give the worst results, although they strictly satisfy the limiting condition. For practical applications, the limiting condition is not important because it only operates as V→0.

Abstract:The molecular thermodynamic model developed previously for fluids of chain-like molecules has been extended to correlate the solubilities of gases such as N2,CO2,CH4 and C2H4 in molten polymers. Classical mixing rules with one adjustable binary parameter was used to adjust the interaction energy between segments of mixtures. For 21 binaries including 52 systems tested, the average relative deviation of pressure is 19.3%. The accuracy of the correlation can be notably improved by using two parameters κij and lij, the latter was used to adjust the collision diameter between segments of mixtures. The average relative deviation of pressure is lowered to 5.6%. For the systems of CO2-molten polymer, the model parameters of CO2 should be re-determined from the experimental solubility in one polymer, the accuracy of the correlation can be notably improved with the use of only one parameter. The comparisons among the calculated results of this work, SAFT and PR equation of state have been made.

Abstract:The new isothermal equation of state (NEOS) for solids is derived through the theory of lattice potential, utilizing the concept of volume dependence of the short-range force constant. To obtain this equation of state, we employed the concept of the third-order approximation of the lattice potential. For critical analysis, we compared the results of isothermal equations of state (EOSs), such as Vinet EOS, Murnaghan EOS, Holzapfel EOS, Born-Mie EOS, Birch–Murnaghan EOS, and NEOS. The newly derived equation of state (NEOS) has been utilized to analyze the compression behavior of molybdenum (Mo), Potassium (K), and Xenon (Xe). It was found that NEOS is in good agreement with experimental data for given solids Mo, K, and Xe up to high compression, while Vinet EOS, Murnaghan EOS, Born-Mie EOS, Holzapfel EOS, and Birch–Murnaghan EOS are less sensitive in calculating pressure at high compression in most cases. Thus, NEOS remains consistent and in good agreement with experimental results for all the samples of solids taken, even up to high compression.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on the microphase separation of diblock copolymer melts was investigated by dynamic density functional theory based on equation of state. The results correspond well with experiment data. With the application of high pressure, all of the phase regions corresponding to the different ordered morphologies become narrower. However, the pressure dependence of the order-disorder transition temperature (T-ODT) relies on the symmetry of the diblock copolymer. In the very nonsymmetrical case when f is small, T-ODT decreases with increasing pressure, while in the symmetrical case when f = 0.5, T-ODT increases with increasing pressure. For the latter case, the increase in the total bead number of the system at the ODT is found, which is in good accordance with the experimental phenomenon that there is an increase in volume accompanying with the transition from ordered to disordered state. In contrast to the temperature, the pressure does not influence the starting time and the duration of microphase separation.
Statistical Thermodynamics of Polymer Solutions

Abstract:The lattice fluid theory of solutions is used to calculate heats and volumes of mixing, lower critical solution temperatures, and the enthalpic and entropic components of the chemical potential. Results of these calculations are compared with literature data on several polyisobutylene solutions. In most instances the agreement with experiment is favorable and comparable to that obtained with the Flory equation of state theory. Several insights into polymer solution behavior are obtained and include: (1) differences in equation of state properties of the pure components make an unfavorable entropic contribution to the chemical potential that becomes large and dominant as the gas-liquid critical temperature of the solvent is approached; (2) limited miscibility of nonpolar polymer solutions at low and high temperatures is a manifestation of a polymer solution's small combinatorial entropy; and (3) negative heats of mixing in nonpolar polymer solutions are caused by the solvent's tendency to contract when polymer is added. Suggestions on how the theory can be improved are made Freeman and Rowlinson' in 1960 observed that several hydrocarbon polymers dissolved in hydrocarbon solvents phase separated at high temperatures. These nonpolar polymer solutions exhibited what are known as lower critical solution temperatures (LCST), a critical point phenomenon that is relatively rare among low molecular weight solutions. Soon after the discovery of the univ- ersality of LCST behavior in polymer solutions, Flory and co-~orkers~-~ developed a new theory of solutions which incorporated the "equation of state" properties of the pure components. This new theory of solutions, hereafter referred to as the Flory theory, demonstrated that mixture thermodynamic properties depend on the thermodynamic properties of the pure components and that LCST be- havior is related to the dissimilarity of the equation of state of properties of polymer and solvent. Patter~od-~ has also shown that LCST behavior is associated with differences in polymer/solvent properties by using the general cor- responding states theory of Prigogine and collaborators.1° Classical polymer solution theory, i.e., Flory-Huggins theory," which ignores the equation of state properties of the pure components, completely fails to describe the LCST behavior.

Abstract:With the aid of Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT), the phase diagrams were calculated for the system cyclohexane (CH)/polystyrene (PS) with different molecular weights at different pressures. The experimental data is in reasonable agreement with SLLFT calculations. The total Gibbs interaction energy, g*12, for different molecular weights PS at different pressures was expressed, by means of a universal relationship, as g*12 = f*12 + (P – P0) υ*12. P-T demixing curves were then calculated at fixed (near critical) compositions of CH and PS systems for different molecular weights. The pressures of optimum miscibility obtained from the Gibbs interaction energy are close to those measured by Wolf and co-workers. Furthermore, a reasonable explanation was given for the earlier observation of Saeki et al., i. e., the phase separation temperatures of the present system increase with the increase of pressure for the low molecular weight of the polymer whereas they decrease for the higher molecular weight polymers. The effects of molecular weight, pressure, temperature and composition on the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter can be described by a general equation resulting from fitting the interaction parameters by means of Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory.

Abstract:Polymer blends or copolymers have multiscale complex structures that can be used as templates to prepare various complex materials. To regulate the mesoscale structures of these polymer blends or copolymers, there are three fundamental problems: What is the physical condition of the microphase separation needed to form materials with desired compositions and mesoscale structures in different domains? How do these compositions and mesoscale structures evolve during the preparation period? How does the morphology change in the interfacial region? Many experimental measurements, computer simulation methods, and theories have been developed. However, most of them are only suitable for individual tasks. In recent years, we have developed theoretical methods based on equations of state that can be used comprehensively to Study the multiscale structure of polymer systems, including the phase diagrams, the morphologies and evolution of microphase separation, the densities and composition profiles in different domains, and the molecular configurations in the interfacial region. The molecular parameters of the equation of state or the Helmholtz function model can be determined from the pressure, volume, temperature, and miscibility data of polymers, which ensures the practical applicability of the methods.
