Abstract:The concept of golden mean (GM) has taken a central place in the development of both Chinese and western classical ethics. There is a growing call for universal ethics in contemporary discussions of ethics. It is argued that there are valuable resources to be explored in the classical theory of GM. There are three reasons why GM might attain the status of universal ethics. First, as an ethical resource that can be shared by all cultures, GM has existed in the theorization of classical Chinese and western ethics. Second, GM possesses the characteristics of ethical common sense. In the history of Chinese and western ethics, whenever there is a need to terminate extremism on ethical issues, GM has always served as the best solution. Third, GM suits the need of interaction between different ethical traditions. In theorizing universal ethics, GM serves not only as a moral standard but also a fundamental principle for practice.

Abstract:As an important concept of Confucianism,the Mean is the core and the highest ethics of Confucianism.The Mean isn't special and can apply to the daily life and behavior of most people.The Mean has the three major meanings that are related and successive: taking hold of two extremes and determining the Mean;the Mean is a golden rule;a golden rule is a permanent solution.Therefore,the doctrine of the Mean inherently the dialectic of easier said than done and the dialectic of more difficult said than done,that is,the Mean is the most simple and the highest ethics.In order to achieve the Mean,there is no shortcut,people should act sure-footedly and make efforts a hundred and even thousand times than others.Therefore,the doctrine of the Mean points out a feasible path and method for people's moral practice.

Abstract:The golden mean, Phi, has been applied in diverse situations in art, architecture and music, and although some have claimed that it represents a basic aesthetic proportion, others have argued that it is only one of a large number of such ratios. We review its early history, especially its relationship to the Mount Meru of Pingala. We examine the successive divisions of 3, 7, and 22 in Indian music and suggest derivation from variants of Mount Meru. We also speculate on the neurophysiological basis behind the sense that the golden mean is a pleasant proportion.

Abstract:Developing a Lofty Mode of Morality and Behaving to the Golden Mean is the highlight of Confucius’s view of self-possession and Confucian philosophy of life. Confucius thought that, if a person maintains moral accomplishment but fails to develop a lofty mode of morality and behave to the golden mean, then he cannot hope to attain the loftiest goal of moral accomplishment. To steadily develop one’s lofty mode of morality is to behave to the golden mean; to behave to the golden mean not to the extreme is to maintain the lofty mode of morality. Active and progressive as Confucius’s view of moral accomplishment, it puts more focus on establishing an mutually-binding principle of control and always regards the concept of the golden mean as the key of the principle of control and the loftiest goal of its moral conception.

Abstract:Sima Guang's theory of medium harmony was the most important idea interpreted in his Golden Mean.According Sima Guang,a gentleman learns to control his mind,and the key to control his mind is to adhere to medium harmony in keeping his mind.The medium harmony refers to the moral of non-excess and non-lack,meaning a scholar should make his best adhere to the medium harmony prior to mental excitement.However,a mental excitement has occurred in the context of non-excess and non-lack,then how should the gentleman adhere to the medium harmony prior to mental excitement in the context of mental excitement that occurred.In terms of Taoist theory,this offers a problem,which was already criticized by Cheng Ying and Zhu Xi.However,the problem Sima raised offered a guide to Taoist consideration.In this sense,Sima Guang theory was of rather active significance to the later development of Taoist ideology.

Abstract:As the core concept of Confucianism,the Mean is the major way of thought of traditional Chinese culture and can be used as the philosophical basis of EFL teaching in China.In this paper,an attempt is made to discuss the enlightenments from the thought of the Mean on the studies of theory and practice of English language teaching,based on its special situation and context.The discussion mainly covers:(1) the construction of a harmonious academic environment;(2) the adaptation of right attitudes towards foreign theories and China's English teaching tradition formulated in the past one hundred years;(3) the management of the various relationships in English language teaching,including those between language knowledge and skills and between teachers and students,to achieve the unity of opposites.

Abstract:In philosophical idea,so long as we break the and acknowledge the three,then the many is self-evident,because is the bridge leading to many.Ancient Chinese philosophy of yin and yang is a typical binary relations doctrine.The notion of divides into two,to combine two to one just embodies the generalization of the yin and yang dualistic opposite concepts.Philosopher Yang Xiong in the Western Han Dynasty firstly put forward trichotomy,and constructed another Confucian symbol system of Taixuan,which was different from the dichotomy of Zhouyi.As a result,he put forward varied doctrine of multiplies three is nine.As early as in the Western Zhou oynasty,Shi Bo expressed a multiple integrated complex ideology which was summarized as synthesizing different things could create a new thing,synthesizing same things could not do it.The five element theory also has the meaning and value of overcoming simple concepts of so as to think that the origin of the world is established on complicated and multiform essential elements and their interaction.

Abstract:Golden section is one of the most famous aesthetic properties in the arts. The present study explores the golden section in Chinese contemporary poetry texts in terms of the 'h-point' on the word-frequency-distribution curves as well as their 'feet'. It demonstrates that the golden section of the selected Chinese poetry is not sitting on the 'h-point', but it is possible for us to investigate the 'feet' of them.

Abstract:There are three explanations of the sources of virtue in the history of Chinese traditional ethical thoughts. The first source is tian Dao (the Dao of Heaven) (natural), the second is xing Dao (the Dao of nature) (mind-nature), and the third is ren Dao (the Dao of human) (social). These explanations not only demonstrate the unique wisdom of ancient Chinese thinkers in constructing mortality, but also have special revelations for us to comprehend more accurately the Chinese traditional morality, to clear up the wrong ideas about morality that have formed since modern times, to make virtue ‘present’ instead of ‘latent’, and to construct a moral society.

Abstract:This paper is based on the Rule of Thirds which the present author has held fast to for many years to interpret the concept of self-negation raised by Mou Zongsan.By this rule,cultural structure can be divided into three different levels as carnal desire,wisdom,and morals.Chinese culture holds highly of morals while attaching less importance to wisdom.Thus in order to develop science and democracy,we have to rang kai yi bu(take a step aside),xia jiang ning ju(descend and condense),and meanwhile she zhi gui ren(subordinate intellect to morality),maintaining our own advantages.Mou Zongsan's concept of self-negation summarizes those contents and is absolutely meaningful.
