Abstract:Abstract:English has been widely used for various purposes and the number of students studying abroad has mushroomed in recent years. This article focuses on the preparation an oversea sojourn for Chinese students to practice English as an international language for intercultural communication. The article also reviews some literature to explain the process of intercultural acculturation and explore how to maximize the culture learning. Finally, the implications suggest that students should prepare for the sojourn in advanced to identify the culture difference, simulation games could also help students to improve their intercultural awareness and facilitate them to be adapted in the new cultural environment.

Abstract:With the popularity of the Internet and mobile terminal technology all over the world, online language, as one of the tools for external communication, plays an important role in the development of languages in the world.As China's international status continues to improve, "Chinese language fever" has swept the world, and more and more foreigners are joining the ranks of Chinese language learning. In order to understand Chinese culture and learn pure Chinese, we should not neglect the learning of online language.Chinese Internet language plays an important role in Chinese language learning, whether as a means of daily communication for international students or an emerging form of language with a wide range of applications. The purpose of this thesis is to promote the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language and to provide new ideas, new methods and new contents for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
Impact of English-Speaking Environments and Chinese Language Pronunciation on the Speaking Proficiency of English Learners in China: A Comprehensive Study

Abstract:English is widely regarded as a global language, and it has become increasingly important for global communication. As a result, the demand for English language education has been on the rise. In China, a significant number of individuals are engaged in learning the English language. However, many English learners in China encounter challenges when it comes to developing their speaking skills. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the speaking skills of English learners in China. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through a questionnaire from 455 college students from three different courses (arts, science & business, and commerce) in China. The study findings identified several factors impacting the speaking skills of English learners in China, including limited opportunities for speaking practice, fear of making mistakes, limited exposure to English-speaking environments, inadequate teacher training, and the influence of the Chinese language on English pronunciation. Additionally, the study highlighted that learners who have greater exposure to English-speaking environments and more opportunities for speaking practice tend to demonstrate better speaking skills. The novelty of this study lies in its valuable insights into the factors influencing the speaking skills of English learners in China. Based on the findings, it is recommended that English teachers receive enhanced training to effectively teach speaking skills, and learners should be provided with increased opportunities for speaking practice, such as participating in group discussions or engaging in speaking activities.

Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) developed by Council of Europe has been gaining popularity since its publication in 2001, and reshaping the practice in language teaching, learning and assessment not only across the European continent but also in many other places such as Japan (CEFR-J project). Some pioneering work was done in China over the last ten years, leading finally to a call for a Chinese framework of reference. Currently, ESL teachers and researchers in China are working on a national English ability scale, China Standards of English (CSE), which hopefully will guide or even regulate the English language teaching and assessment practice in China.

Abstract:China's economic power is changing attitudes towards Mandarin Chinese world-wide. Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) consequently emerges as a subject for research as well as an educational market. This article investigates the modern evolution of CFL curriculum policy that has led to the current rapid growth of the Confucius Institute (CI) around the world, using media sources including government policy, Confucius Institutes themselves, newspaper reports from the Internet, and individual blogs posted by teachers of Chinese language, as well as university academics' observations. It opens up a discussion of the implications of the development of China's CFL policy, particularly through the Confucius Institutes, in diversifying the world's lingua franca and sharing the market of education in the coming era. The analysis indicates that it is unlikely that Chinese will displace English as the world's most widely used language in the foreseeable future, but the view that the Chinese language is an important element in the future unity of the world has been voiced.

Abstract:Some observations on the possible indigenization of English in mainland China. China boasts the largest English-learning population in the world. ‘It seems there are more people learning to speak English in China than there are English speakers in the whole of the United States’. Over 200 million children, about 20% of the total in the world, are learning English in schools, and about 13 million young people at university. The Chinese government has decided to offer English as a compulsory course nationwide from the third year at primary school. While schools in rural areas are trying to find qualified English teachers, those in large cities like Beijing and Shanghai have begun to do so as soon as the children start school at the age of six.

Abstract:The emergence of Chinese language fever has brought both opportunities and challenges for Chinese language dissemination, and students of Chinese language education, as the main force of Chinese language teaching overseas, are facing a lot of new problems including changes in the external environment and changes in their own factors. This paper analyzes the difficulties faced by this group of students in become Chinese language volunteers according to the questionnaire and finds out the problems they are most concerned about. At the same time, the paper also analyzes many papers to figure out the reasons for the current difficulties in Chinese language dissemination and then makes explanations. In view of the current situation of Chinese language dissemination and the specific situation of students of Chinese language international education, both the academic circles and the students themselves need to grasp the changes in the world, clarify the direction of their own development and make corresponding adjustments. Hoping that this paper clarify the difficulties faced by students in this field and provide some help to the dissemination of the Chinese language.

Abstract:With the increasing comprehensive national strength of China and the need for national development, the communication between China and Western English-speaking countries has been thriving. Under this trend, the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages has been developing rapidly, with a large number of foreign friends showing great enthusiasm for learning Chinese. The main arguments of this paper are: 1. challenges encountered in teaching Chinese as a second foreign language; 2. Reasons for Chinese intercultural communication errors; 3. strategies of teaching Chinese as a second language in intercultural communication. Therefore, to better promote communication between China and the West, spread Chinese culture, and help foreigners to understand and overcome the difficulties of learning Chinese, this essay demonstrates that Chinese language teachers should focus on cultivating the intercultural communication abilities of communicators. Through learning the basic linguistic knowledge and cultural background of both communicators, it is possible to minimize barriers in intercultural communication, and more amicable international exchanges can be facilitated.

Abstract:China Report, Ahead of Print. With the conviction that formulaic expressions in a language are carriers of stable thought patterns of its culture, the paper conducts a thematic analysis of Chinese educational idioms with the goal of exploring the traditional Chinese educational values reflected in the Chinese language use. Altogether, about 100 Chinese idioms that pertain to teaching, learning and parenting are identified from a Chinese Chengyu (idioms) dictionary. Findings of this study challenge the common practice of borrowing Western pedagogical discourses to justify curriculum change initiatives in China, arguing that the traditional Chinese educational discourses should be retained in order to secure a strong cultural identity for young generations.

Abstract:This study explored the language learning motivation of a small group of five university students in the UK through the constructs of Dornyei's L2 Motivational Self System and Henry’s notion of ‘the ideal multilingual self’. The five participants, all successful language learners at school, chose to specialise in modern languages at university and in addition to the foreign languages they had previously learned, decided to study Chinese. Interviews were conducted in the final year of the participants’ university course and their motivational changes during the course of studying Chinese were explored. The results revealed that two students who achieved remarkable success in learning Chinese came to possess a strong desire to integrate in Chinese society, linked to a longer period spent studying in the target language country. We suggest that integrative orientation is a significant component in maintaining the ideal L2 self, especially when a psychological and physical distance exists in relation to the target language, its culture and the country.

Abstract:China has been promoting English teaching activities since the 1960s with the goal of cultivating a global perspective and proficiency among the younger generation. Despite decades of teaching, issues such as the inconsistent use of British and American pronunciation and the incorrect use of tenses in Chinese English persist and have not seen improvement. This paper delves into a comprehensive study from the perspective of the differences between English teaching in China and foreign countries, specifically exploring the relationship between Chinese English and educational methods while analyzing the underlying logic and differences in Chinese and Western English teaching methods. This paper starts with the scientific laws of language acquisition and aims to provide practical solutions to address Chinese English problems and other language-related issues, and offers valuable insights into the innovation and development of Chinese English teaching in the future.

Abstract:<span>The rising popularity of the Chinese language as a subject for study has motivated research on international students' cultural adaptation and language learning during periods of study abroad in China. This inquiry examined the challenges that a group of New Zealand students encountered and the strategic responses they adopted in relation to cultural adaptation in China. In the inquiry, we encouraged 15 participants to write reflective journals and conducted group interviews to explore their experiences. The analysis revealed the variety of challenges that the participants faced, including language-based, lifestyle, and academic challenges as well as sociocultural and psychological ones. In response to these challenges, the participants adopted diverse strategic efforts to achieve cognitive, affective, and skill development in facilitating their communication practices with local Chinese people. These findings suggest that language educators need to revise traditional pedagogical approaches so that new pedagogical activities can be developed to promote study abroad students' communication competence, and counselling services should be provided to support their cultural adaptation and language learning.</span>

Abstract:In the context of global communication and individual development, English has evolved into a universal lingua franca, playing a crucial role across various fields worldwide. Proficiency in spoken English is indispensable for the academic journey of Chinese college students. However, the current status of Chinese college students' spoken English proficiency reveals that there are still some aspects that need improvement. The communicative approach, recognized as an advanced language teaching methodology, proves to be instrumental in enhancing students' oral proficiency in English. This paper adopts the communicative approach perspective, employing a case study focused on a specific section of a Chinese students' English textbook. The study delves into the teaching path of "create-experience-practice-achieve". Building upon this teaching framework, a concrete teaching plan is designed, followed by an analysis and reflections, aiming to provide reflective insights as a practical reference for college-level oral English instruction. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of college students' oral English proficiency.
