Abstract:Carex duriuscula is a wildly distributed species in China, has abundant plant number and many useful biological features, such as: early germination, wonderful color, lasting growth, strong asexual propagation , under ground rhizome development and trampling endurance abilities. Abstract:In order to stimulate rational development and utilization for plant resources of Symplocos,and promote studies and landscape use of Symplocos in China.Based on the brief analysis of originated resources of Symplocos in China,the review of Symplocos research were summarized.The author also discussed the planting design of Symplocos species in landscapes.Symplocos resources and application had not been paid much attention in China.The potential of Symplocos used as urban landscaping plants should be developed,thus could benefit the diversity of landscape and garden plants.

Abstract:Carex remotistachya, C. daxinensis and C. fangiana, three new species from China, are described and illustrated. Carex remotistachya resembles C. doniana (sect. Molliculae), differing by having spikes remote, staminate spikes with a 3–5 cm long peduncle at the base, leaves 3–6 mm wide, and stigmas shorter than perigynia. Carex daxinensis is similar to C. caudispicata (sect. Radicales), but differs in having perigynia ellipsoid-ovoid, 4–4.5 mm long, staminate parts of spikes shorter than pistillate ones, and leaves 2–3.5 mm wide. Carex fangiana is similar to C. nitidiutriculata (sect. Hymenochlaenae), differing by having leaves 6–9 mm wide, staminate spike solitary, and perigynia glabrous.

Abstract:Recent fieldwork in the Chinese province of Zhejiang revealed new insights into the taxonomy of the genus Carex in this area. Carex honglinii, a new species of Carex sect. Confertiflorae, is described. It differs from C. pseudodispalata in having perigynia broadly obovoid, contracted into a ca. 0.5‒0.7 mm long beak at the apex, and staminate scales acuminate. Carex nemostachys var. subglabra (sect. Confertiflorae) is raised to specific rank and combined as C. subglabra. Eventually, a new subspecies of Carex scopulus (subsp. aristata; sect. Mitratae) is described. This new subspecies differs from the type subspecies in having pistillate scales with a 1‒4 mm long apical scabrous awn, and leaves 1.5‒2.5 wide.

Abstract:Carex qingliangensis D. M. Weng, H. W. Zhang & S. F. Xu, a new species of the Cyperaceae from Zhejiang, China, is described with illustrations. The new species is morphologically similar to C. dolichostachya Hayata and C. tianmushanica C. Z. Zheng & X. F. Jin, but differs from the former in having perigynia sparsely pubescent and achenes constricted into a short neck at apex. It differs from the latter in having achenes not contracted in the middle part.

Abstract:Carex sinosupina, a new species from Gansu, China is described and illustrated. This species is similar to C. aridula and C. ivanoviae, but differs by having broader leaves, 2.0–3.5 mm wide, perigynia 3–5‐veined abaxially and achenes concave at the middle of one lateral surface. Based on a field survey and SEM (scanning electron microscope) observation of the micromorphology of perigynia and achenes, the morphology and micromorphology of the new species, C. aridula and C. ivanoviae is compared.

Abstract:Section Radicales (Kük.) Nelmes comprises nearly 15 species in Carex subg. Carex (Cyperaceae) and is mainly distributed in the Pan-Himalaya region, with a few species extending to the Guangxi and Hainan provinces of China and Burma. A taxonomic revision of sect. Radicales in China is proposed and 12 species with two varieties are recognized. Carex pseudomitrata X. F. Jin & Cen is described as a new species and C. caudispicata var. longiutriculata X. F. Jin is described as a new variety. Carex anningensis is reduced to synonym of C. caudispicata, and C. chuiana to C. radicalis. Carex funhuangshanica and C. speciosa subsp. dilatata are respectively reduced to synonyms of C. speciosa and C. speciosa var. courtallensis.

Abstract:Carex scopulus, C. bamaensis, C. pararadicalis and C. tingnungii, four new species from China, are described with illustrations in the present paper. Carex scopulus is similar to C. chungii (sect. Mitratae) in having achenes with angles constricted at the middle, but differs by having pistillate scales pale reddish brown and acuminate at apex, staminate scales reddish brown, and perigynia glabrous. Carex bamaensis is similar to C. lancifolia (sect. Clandestinae) in having culms lateral and leaf blades 2.5-6 mm wide, but differs in having culms, leaves and bracts all pilose, and pistillate spikes fairly densely flowered. Carex pararadicalis resembles C. handelii (sect. Chlorostachyae) in having rhizomes long and creeping, but differs by having the terminal spike gynecandrous, lateral spikes pistillate, and pistillate scales obtuse at apex and shorter than the perigynia. Carex tingnungii resembles C. plectobasis (subsect. Ferrugineae) in having 3 stigmas and perigynia that are compressed trigonous and densely whitish hispidulous, but differs in having a solitary staminate spike with 1-4 pistillate flowers at the base, achenes oblong-ellipsoid, and styles that are densely crisped-pilose.

Abstract:Through specimen examination and field investigation, we present an extensive Carex checklist for Yunnan, China. Yunnan harbors 195 Carex species, encompassing 22 new records and recently published taxa. Prof. Wu Zhengyi’s classification of Chinese seed plants into 15 area-types, widely accepted by phytogeographers for decades, serves as our framework. Type 1 families and genera, deemed cosmopolitan, are often excluded in floristic statistics due to their perceived lack of floristic indication. We analyzed the floristic characteristics of Yunnan’s Carex, particularly representative Type 1 genera, reveals a predominantly temperate nature rather than tropical. The substantial presence of species affiliated with the Sino-Himalaya area-subtype indicates a strong association with the Sino-Himalayan Forest Subkingdom. As a globally distributed genus, Carex holds significant floristic indication at the species level. This study shows the significant value of this cosmopolitan genus in floristic research. For accurate elucidation of floristic characteristics, it is imperative to conduct species-level analyses of Cosmopolitan Area-Type genera when studying the flora of a specific floristic region.

Abstract:Carex yandangshanica C. Z. Zheng & X. F. Jin, a new species of Carex sect. Rhomboidales Kükenth. from Zhejiang, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to C. thibetica Franch. and C. brevicuspis C. B. Clarke, but differs from the former by having trabeculate leaves, pistillate spikes with 6–10 staminate flowers or without staminate flower at the apex, and achenes at apex contracted into a slightly curved beak, and from the latter by having lateral culms, trabeculate leaves, and elliptic, rubiginous and awned pistillate scales. SEM microphotographs of perigynia and achenes are provided for the new species and related taxa.

Revisiting Of Carex Sect. Confertiflorae S.L. (Cyperaceae): New Data From Molecular And Morphological Evidence And First Insights On Carex Biogeography In East Asia

Abstract:Carex sect. Confertiflorae s.l. is a medium-sized species group (ca. 40 species) with its center of diversity in E Asia (China and Japan). According to morphological traits, the section has been proposed to split into two sections (sects. Confertiflorae sensu Ohwi and Molliculae Ohwi) up to five different ones (sects. Confertiflorae s.s., Molliculae, Dispalatae Ohwi, Ischnostachyae Ohwi, and Alliiformes Akiyama). Recent phylogenetic reconstructions showed Confertiflorae s.l. not to be monophyletic, as species traditionally considered part of it were found to belong to other clades, whereas species traditionally ascribed to other sections were nested within it. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetic structure, morphological affinities, and biogeographic history of sect. Confertiflorae s.l. We employed a taxon-based approach to explore the morphological affinities of the species considered in sect. Confertiflorae and compared the micromorphology of the nutlets of almost all the taxa using SEM. We included 40 samples representing 31 species/subspecies of sect. Confertiflorae s.l. and used two nuclear (ETS and ITS) and three plastid (trnL-F, matK, and rpl32-trnL(UAG)) molecular markers to reconstruct the phylogeny of the group. The phylogenetic analyses confirmed the polyphyly of sect. Confertiflorae s.l., whose representatives were found within five distinct clades. From these, two clades, sect. Confertiflorae and sect. Molliculae, were found to be closely related and contained the majority of the species. The composition of the two clades agreed with the morphological structure of the group, and we confirmed an exclusive combination of features (namely color of basal sheaths, presence of bract sheath, peduncle of lowest spike, inflorescence sex distribution, shape of pistillate glume apex, and color and veins of utricle, among others) characterizing each of the two clades. The origin of the two clades was found to be in the early Pliocene; however, the majority of the diversification events within each clade took place during the Pleistocene. This illustrates that although Asia has been regarded as having little potential ecological space for Carex to diversify due to its climate stability, groups of sedges sub-endemic from that area may have a fairly recent origin related to glaciations. We proposed the rearrangement of sect. Confertiflorae as previously conceived as three independent sections: the monotypic Alliiformes, sect. Molliculae, and sect. Paludosae.

Abstract:Carex huangshanica X. F. Jin & W. J. Chen, a new species from Anhui Province of eastern China, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Carex sect. Rhomboidales and resembles C. longirostrata in having perigynia gradually contracted into a long beak at apex; orifice 2-lobed with long teeth; achenes abruptly contracted into a beak at apex. It differs from C. longirostrata in having upper spikes aggregated, pistillate scales shortly awned at apex, perigynia nearly glabrous, and achenes ovoid. Micromorphological characters of the perigynia and achenes under scanning electron microscope are compared between the new species and C. longirostrata. Carex huangshanica has glabrous perigynia (vs. pubescent perigynia in C. longirostrata), achenes abruptly contracted in a short curved beak at apex, and only one silica body is present in each epidermal cell (vs. achenes of C. longirostrat that are contracted in a short coiled beak at apex, and without silica body in epidermal cells).

Abstract:A new species of Carex (Cyperaceae), Carex xueyingiana, from section Radicales, is described and illustrated from Hainan Island, China. We analyzed 35 morphological characters using Cluster Analysis and Principal Components Analysis to evaluate the relationships between the new species and the 15 species from the same section occurring in China. The new species is similar to C. chlorocephalula, displaying pubescent rhizomes, leaves densely hispidulous on both surfaces, and slender tufted culms. Carex xueyingiana differs from C. chlorocephalula by the leaves distinctly longer than culms (not equaling these), stems 4–6 mm wide (instead 1–3 mm), bracts sheath-like, 5–6 mm long (instead leaf-like and 2–3.5 cm long), spikes 7–10 mm long (instead 10–15 mm), and perigynium beakless (instead beaked). The new species is only known from Hainan Island and is assessed as Vulnerable (VU DD).

Abstract:Carex hangzhouensis C. Z. Zbeng X. F. Jin & B. Y. Ding, a new species of Cyperaceae from eastern China, is described and illustrated, and the distinguishing characters are discussed. Owing to its peculiar habit, Carex hangzhouensis does not fit into all existing section. Therefore, based upon this type, the new Carex sect. Hangzhouenses is identified, and a key to this and the related sections in eastern dud Southern Asia is provided.

Abstract:Carex zhejiangensis X. F. Jin, Y. J. Zhao, C. Z. Zheng & H. W. Zhang, a new species of Carex sect. Rhomboidales sensu Kükenthal (Cyperaceae) from Zhejiang, eastern China, is described with illustrations. This new species is morphologically similar to C. filipes and C. macroglossa. Compared to C. filipes, C. zhejiangensis has elongated rhizomes, scattered culms, rather densely flowered pistillate spikes, achenes shortly stipitate at the base, and styles erect at the base. In contrast, C. filipes has short rhizomes, caespitose culms, sparsely flowered pistillate spikes, achenes obscurely stipitate at the base, and styles curved at the base. C. zhejiangensis differs from C. macroglossa by having elongated rhizomes and scattered culms, pistillate scales awned at apex, and perigynia contracted to a narrowly infundibuliform beak at apex. Diagnostic morphological characters, which are based upon population sampling, were analyzed in Carex zhejiangensis sp. nov., C. filipes and C. macroglossa.

Abstract:In this paper, Carex chungii and other five names at species rank, plus one variety and one form, all from of C. sect. Mitratae, were revised. They constitute a group of morphologically very similar taxa, difficult to tell apart. Our study was based on literature survey, fieldwork, herbarium specimens, statistical analysis of morphological characters and SEM observations of achenes and perigynia. Analysis of morphological data of 94 individuals from eleven populations using principal component analysis (PCA) revealed five clusters, which we consequently considered to correspond to five species. The achenes of Carex genkaiensis were strikingly different from all the other species regarding achene apex contracted into a 0.2-0.5 mm long neck-like appendage (vs. into a discoid-annulate style-base), as well as its perigynium indumentum (pubescent vs. sparsely pubescent). Carex anhuiensis, C. xuanchengensis and C. truncatirostris f. erostris are all synonymized to C. truncatirostris. The previously recognized Carex kamagariensis from Japan is synonymized to C. chungii. Carex chungii var. rigida is recognized as specific rank and the new name C. nanpingensis is proposed. Our study is the first effort to address the taxonomy of this complicate group as a whole in its entire range.

Abstract:Many species of the genus Asarum plants are used as Chinese traditional or folk medicines, in Chinese which are known as "Xixin" (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) , "Bei-Xixin" , "Hua-Xixin" and "Nan-Xixin" , etc. In order to get a clear picture of resources distribution and varieties on Chinese markets of the crude drug Xixin and provide scientific basis for their resource conservation and sustainable use, during recent years we conducted field investigations and market researches many times. The results showed that the resources of both official Xixins and non-official Xixins were decreased because of the ecological environment damage and over-digging, especially species whose population size was small. Bei-Xixin derived from A. heterotropoides var. mandshuricum was the most species on the Chinese markets except for a few areas of China. Hua-Xixin derived from A. sieboldii and non-official Xixins were mainly used in their producing areas. Cultivation of Hua-Xixin should be greatly developed, and wild resources of non-official species must be preserved strictly.

Abstract:China is rich in Spiraea resources about 70 species distribute and whose distribution is widely. The plant resources of Spiraea not only have excellent ornamental value, but also some of them also have cultivation advantages for example, adaptation to cold climate in the North, they are one of the hard-won flower shrubs in northern landscaping, but their resources and application have not been paid much attention. This paper summarized the distribution of Spiraea species and its varieties in China, some familiar species,cultivars, their characters and application in landscaping were introduced, and some fine species were recommended, the prospect of landscaping application was also presented finally. Compared the introduction and application of Spiraea plants with England, America and Germany etc., the intensive study and extensive utilization of Spiraea plant resources should be strengthened urgently in China.
