Abstract:The present study quantitatively investigates the structural features of English written VP-ellipsis (VPE) and VP-substitution (VPS) under the theoretical framework of dependency grammar. Results show that: (a) Both VPE and VPS are human language mechanisms that follow the least effort principle; (b) Dependency distance of segmental and discontinuous linguistic units under the influence of VPE and VPS conform to the right-truncated Zipf-Alekseev distribution; (c) Dependency-based indices are effective in distinguishing similar structures of VPE and VPS, especially the Do-Support in ellipsis and Do + X in substitution. The study not only explores the regularity of partial segments of human language under the mechanisms of VPE and VPS, but also offers quantitative evidence for distinguishing confusing structures in VPE and VPS, which may aid in raising the retrieving precision of similar linguistic structures in corpora.

Abstract:The paper introduces a unit of syntax beyond the constituent called the chain. A number of mechanisms are shown to be sensitive to chains, e.g. the formation of predicates and idioms, the ellipses of gapping, pseudogapping and VP-ellipsis, and the elided material of stripping and answer fragments. The presentation is couched in a surface syntax, dependency-bascd framework, as opposed to a constituency-based one. While the chain call be defined ill a manner consistent with constituency, doing so requires that one adopt some controversial assumptions about the nature of constituency structure. The potential of the chain concept is great; it is the tool necessary to address the manner in which semantic compositionality occurs in the syntax.

Abstract:Speakers and listeners produce and process language in chunks. These chunks are not arbitrary combinations of words, but rather they are motivated in part by the syntactic structure of the sentences at hand. This article employs chunking data collected from informants to examine and reach conclusions about the syntactic structure of Mandarin sentences. Five prominent constructions are explored: 1) pivotal sentences, 2) serial verb constructions (or co-verbs), 3) V-de constructions, 4) ha" constructions, and 5) bei constructions. The account is couched in a dependency grammar (DG) approach to syntax. A relatively new unit of syntax, the component, plays a central role in the analysis. The message is in part that the component is a more suitable unit of syntax for predicting how informants choose to chunk sentences than the phrase structure grammar (PSG) constituent. A study on the VP-ellipsis under the framework of the Minimalist Syntax

Abstract:Under the framework of the Minimalist Syntax, this paper starts from categorizing the types of VP ellipses and analyzes the syntactic status of shi (是) in Mandarin Chinese. This paper argues that there exist two types of shi in Mandarin Chinese — copula shi and dummy auxiliary shi. The dummy auxiliary shi normally appears in coordinate context and is located in CFocus, licensing the topic focus in its specifier position. In addition, on the basis of "derivation by phase" theory and the "deletion approach", this paper proposes the "Parallelism Condition" to account for the different syntactic properties of VP ellipsis in Mandarin Chinese and English. Finally, this paper makes an extended study on gapping and pseudogapping in an attempt to account for their syntactic properties in Mandarin Chinese and English under a unified theoretical framework.

Abstract:This paper explores the syntactic configurations of the existential constructions in the framework of the theory of lexical-syntax by Hale Keyser and the extended analyses based on this approach to the relational construal at the syntax-semantics interface,arguing that existential constructions in English and Chinese have different syntactic representations,but they share the same FIGURE-GROUND configuration in the underlying core structure with the property of unaccusativity.The argument structure configuration inside VP is licensed by the Light Verb like EXIST or HOLD,but the introduction of the external argument is projected by the Applicative Head.

Abstract:This paper takes a systemic functional approach to the syntactic analysis of the V+to+V construction in English.The analysis indicates that there are a number of semantic relations between the two verbs(verbal groups) although they share the same syntactic form of V+to+V.The analysis of different combinations in the V+to+V construction shows that a meaning-based approach to syntactic analysis has its advantages in exploring the relationship between the verbal group and its function in realizing meaning.

Abstract:The "V+NP+NP" structure implicates complicated syntactic and semantic relationships.Through targeted observation and analysis,this paper finds out that the TA structure phenomenon is unique in Chinese and is recalcitrant to traditional and generative grammatical analyses.Therefore,a revised Construction Grammatical Heuristics is adopted hereby to excavate some syntax-pragmatic idiosyncrasies of the TA structure against some other pertinent structures deriving from the same syntactic skeleton so as to divulge relevant interface effects and attributes of the form-content pair within the conceptual network.

Abstract:Abstract The literature to date features two very different approaches to the study of syntax, the formal or structure-based approach and the functional or semantics-based approach, both of which have advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the “ngp1 + vgp + ngp2 + ngp3” construction in English by identifying the relationship between the clausal elements in terms of clause types. The theoretical support is Systemic Functional Linguistics which is semantics-based and which regards form/structure as the realization of meaning/semantics. Specifically, the paper discusses the issue by keeping in mind questions such as “What kind of process is it?”, “How many participants can/must be involved in the process?”, and “What roles can/must those participants play?”. By analyzing three pairs of clauses that share the same “ngp1 + vgp + ngp2 + ngp3” structure, it is found that the clause types SVOO, SOVA, SVOC, and SVO all exhibit the same “ngp1 + vgp + ngp2 + ngp3” structure. The identification of the clause types is conducted by examining the Process in the Transitivity system of the clause. The implication of the present study is that a functional-syntactic analysis should start from meaning and consider how the meaning is realized and that although syntactic analysis at the level of form is necessary, the focus of a good functional-syntactic analysis should be based on semantic analysis at the level of meaning.

Abstract:The stridency of part of speech knowledge is still an open issue in the study of automatic parsing.In this paper,we take the v+v structural sequence as study object and classify the verbs completely according to the syntactic,by which the words with the same syntactic function are given the same tag. Then,the constructional homonym can be changed into un-isomorphic format,so the structural relations are easily confirmed.The study shows that the accuracy rate can achieve 85% using the ambiguity solution to the v+v sequence.

Abstract:This paper makes a tentative attempt to analyze the grammatical,semantic and pragmatic features of V+ge+VP construction from the perspective of cognitive construction grammar approach,and we finds that it is an irreplaceable pairing of form and function,and it has two distinct pragmatic features: expressing special feelings and ge highlighting the focus—VP.On the basis of poly-coercion-inheritance approach,this construction can be seen as the inheritance and coercion from five constructions,and is formed by two polars(VO Construction and VC Construction)which,together with other constructions between them,form a continuum.

Abstract:This study aims to use a large-scale corpus to explore the syntactic distributions of V+A bound verb-object constructions which consist of single verbs and single adjectival objects. We find that the distributions of V+A constructions in the corpus come in three varieties: 1. without followed by constituents; 2. followed by nominal constituents; 3. followed by non-nominal constituents. We arrive at the following conclusions that impact on the distributions: 1. the combination degree of V and A; 2. the properties of nominal constituents and the effect of V+A collocate with nominal elements. Then we discuss a special syntactical type such as "da-hei""zhao-xin". At last, we find and analyze some verb-object constructions which usually cannot exist independently.

Abstract:The paper demonstrates that dependency-based syntax is in a strong position to produce principled and economical accounts of the syntax of constructs. The difficulty that constituency-based syntax has in this regard is that very many constructs fail to qualify as constituents. The point is evident with the box diagrams and attribute value matrices (AVMs.) that some construction grammars (CxGs) use to formalize constructions; these schemata often represent fragments rather than constituents. In dependency-based syntax in contrast, constructions are catenae, whereby a catena is a chain of words linked together by dependencies. The catena is a novel but well-defined unit of syntax associated with dependency grammar (DG). The constructs of CxGs are more amenable to analyses in terms of the catenae of dependency-based syntax than to analyses in terms of the constituents of constituency-based syntax.
Predicting Syntactic Choice in Mandarin Chinese: a Corpus-Based Analysis of Ba Sentences and SVO Sentences

Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates the effects of 10 factors on the choice between alternative ba sentences and SVO sentences in Mandarin Chinese. These factors are givenness, definiteness, animacy and pronominality of NP2s, NP2 length, VP length, verb sense, syntactic parallelism, dependency distance, and surprisal. Using corpus data and mixed-effects logistic regression modeling, we find that on the one hand, givenness, syntactic parallelism, and the log-transformed ratio of NP2 length and VP length are significant predictors of the choice between ba sentences and SVO sentences. A new NP2, a large length ratio and a parallel construction predict an SVO sentence rather than a ba sentence. On the other hand, dependency distance and surprisal estimated by the trigram model are effective in predicting the choice between naturally occurring ba/SVO sentences and their alternatives. Naturally occurring sentences are more likely to have shorter dependency distances and smaller surprisal values than the converted sentences. The effects of these five factors on syntactic choice are congruent with results of previous studies, which suggests that some determinants of syntactic choice are shared among languages.

Abstract:Synthetic compounds have received considerable research attention in linguistics, since they can provide important implications to explore the reciprocal relationship between syntax and morphology. It is suggested that synthetic compounds are generated by argument structure. For instance, the zhǐzhāng ‘paper’ and jī ‘machine’ in zhǐzhāng-fěnsuì-jī ‘paper shredder’ can be analyzed as the arguments of the verb fěnsuì ‘shred’. Previous research on incorporation and adjunction analyses has demonstrated the syntactic-semantic relations in synthetic compounds but failed to explain the asymmetry between the actual linear order and the underlying argument structure. The current paper proposes and illustrates the analysis method of verb raising. The synthetic compounds are headed by a nominal affix -n, which selects a verb phrase as its complement leftwards. Then the [+affix] feature of -n triggers the verb to raise to the -n position to generate the surface linear order. This approach provides a solution to analyze Chinese synthetic compounds and can be supported by relevant facts in other languages such as English and Japanese.

Abstract:This paper examines three Surface Unaccusative Structures,i.e. passive structure,existential structure and unergative verbal structure. It proposes that the NP in the subject position be analyzed as base-generated Topic,which governs and commands the retained object position and assigns genitive case to its specifier. The whole process of generation involves no movement. The theory has a stronger explanatory force since it conforms to the cognitive rules.
The Study of the VO Construction between Chinese and English Based on the Action Chain Mode

Abstract:Based on the model of action chain and by comparing the construction of VO structure between Chinese and English,the author finds out that there is a kind of general resemblance between them.Besides the symmetric feature exhibited by the typical VO structure,the compatible power of semantic structure is also found in the construction of English VO structure,which confirms that the metaphoric or metonymic thinking prevails among all humans as a way of cognition;on the other hand,there are obvious discrepancies,like different action chain modes,the absence of agent object in English and the lack of cognate object in Chinese.Besides,there are far less pro-objects in English.All above proves that there are similar cognitive ways but different cognitive processes among different nations.

Abstract:There are a large number of semantic resource multiplication phenomena in Mandarin Chinese,the most typical ones are pronominal anaphora and the three VP ellipsis structures referred by Yen-hui Andrey Li(2005).[1] They can be well-processed by means of Jger's(2005) LLC system.In addition,if an "ellipsis slot" introduction rule is added to LLC,more phenomena concerning semantic resource multiplication,e.g.multi-verbal sentences and pivotal sentences,can be processed in a right way and resulted with suitable formal semantic representation.[2] The new system achieved by adding eI to LLC has also been proved complete and sound.

Abstract:This paper's aim is to analyze the physiological mechanisms of double object structure in the brain with ERPs. It examines brain's legality of the collocation for double object and bivalent-verb object. The result shows given double object needs less energy in psychological requirements. Taken double object and atypical object show no significant differences in their processing mechanism. However, the grammatical usage of the structures processing of given double object and the other two types of double object did show differences. This may demonstrate processing mechanism in early period of Chinese was not just simple pure syntax analysis but also semantic processing analysis.

Abstract:The syntax of an expression reflects conceptual structures and the way people construe the world. Syntactic constructions containing the same conceptual contents may differ in meaning due to the different construals employed to structure the conceived scenes. The English double object construction (DOC) and dative construction (DC), are not of the relations of derivation or transformation, but rather differ in cognition and meaning. This paper will first explore the prototypical features of the English ditransitive verbs, and then elaborate the constructional meanings and the differences between DOC and DC, and then account for their restrictions and underlying causes, and finally their metaphorical and metonymical extensions.
